really nice nights... August can be 90 all day and all night, so I don't know. Hopefully it'll be okay. Well, I think it'll be fine. I think sleeping weather, those that wanna stay in, out of the campgrounds.

The nice thing about Decorah is we've got an awesome campgrounds. We've got some, I don't know what you wanna call it, primitive camping along the bike trails that you could stay at. Mm-hmm. Um, there's tons of hotels.

Air- Airbnb's around here are fantastic, so there's options for everybody to be as comfortable or as uncomfortable as they wanna be. [laughs] Right. Well, I was thinking about that.

I don't, I don't know if we can have a common campground like Maine did.

It'd be like Winona, where like you just, you get to town, we're gonna have the ride, the trails will be there, and then we'll have bars that we'll go to, but we're not gonna have a common campground.

And- And nothing is that far away so that it's not like- It's not... where in Maine we were. I mean, you couldn't, you couldn't safely ride down any roads to get to any place else without- Yeah...

I tell you what, this is going back to what SingleSpeed USA and, and kind of SingleSpeed Worlds originally was, is that once you get to town you never need to drive again. Right.

You should be able to be on your bicycle the entire time you're here. Yeah. If you put a pin in the middle of Decorah, you think it'd be like a three-mile radius and you get everything including the trails.

Yeah, it's, it's, uh, it's awesome and it's... And there's, if there's not a, if there's not a street that's easy to ride on, there's a paved trail that leads to a lot of it. So there's, there's, um...

Yeah, it's gonna be, it's gonna be fun. Um, I'm not sure Decorah's gonna be happy with us when we're all done, but it's... [laughs] I've already- It, it- I'm like, "Hey, can we do this thing at your place?"

And a lot of people are like, "No." [laughs] That one's not quite in. It's not. Is it too? Oh, there. It's other one. It is now. Yeah. It was pulled out a little bit. Now we're good.

After we won the right to host this, you and I took off and we went to Milwaukee for Steel is Real and, uh, Zito's first anniversary ride, which was- I didn't make that one... a blast. Yeah, he's a good- Was it good?

Oh, it was so much fun. That was... You know, there's a manifest and you can go to these different stops, and people just kind of, I don't wanna say they blew it up, but they did a lot of it.

They, it just gave you an excuse to go to different places. It was somewhat of a bike messenger-type thing. It was a lot of fun. And then he [laughs] I swear to God, I thought he was stealing a boat. [laughs] We went...

We were, we were sitting outside a bar, and all of a sudden there he goes over and he's taking the windows off this boat. And I'm, like, going, "Holy shit, Zito's stealing a boat."

[laughs] And then it was actually, he, he actually knows the people that run this, the rental service and works for them part-time.

So we got a really cool tour of, uh, Milwaukee, the bay at night with the lights and the bridges lit up. It was kinda pretty, and it was really nice out there, so that was a blast. That, that whole weekend was fun, too.

Yeah. I, um, the first time we went over there and we did, like... I've never done a messenger-type of ride, where you don't stop and you always turn right. And, like, he was just tearing through Milwaukee.

I mean, we went right through downtown. That was... I've never ridden like that in my life. [laughs] But it was- So all- It was nuts. I mean, we didn't s- we didn't even slow down. Burning through alleys.

Um- And, and oddly enough to me, Milwaukee, the traffic was... And I don't think, you know, uh, I don't think bike messenger's as big a thing as it used to be, but the traffic seemed to be okay with it. Yeah.

I mean, the car, the car traffic didn't really seem to... They, they seemed to understand what we were doing. Yeah. I mean, they just kinda, like, let us blow through.

And when there was a stoplight that there was a group of us at, they just let us all go through before they came. There was no beeping, no honking, no flipping us off.

It was, it was really kind of f- It was a great time, actually. It was a blast. Yeah, and it's cool. The, the same thing, like anybody does here, um...

Well, me and Captain is a little, you're not a lifelong resident, but you've lived in Decorah a lot- Yep... [laughs] lived a long time. But yeah, when you go around and, like, we'll say, "This is T-Box.

This is the trail. This is that trail, and this was..." You know, they, they do a tour, and he did that same thing. He was, like, really proud of Milwaukee, and he wanted to show us everything that he-...

And then, and so it, it just, it, it's, it's really fun to ride with him and ha- listen to him tell you about buildings and about the history of that building, and it was, it was a, it was a great time.

I really enjoyed myself. I cannot wait for next year. And he's got a lot of cool restaurants and cool bars that he, he's like, "Gotta go to that..." What was it, Side Door we went to? Yeah. Or, uh, Stage Door?

I don't even remember what it was for, but we got roped- It was a cancer benefit for something. Yeah, we got roped into a ride and, um, that turned into a beer and a shot also. A lot of shots.

It was the- A lot of beers... first annual, uh- You read the thing... something benefit bike ride. I can't read with that- Well, it used to be called the Chlamydia Ride. It used to be, yeah. Yep. [laughs] So it was...

Where's the money go on a chlamydia benefit ride? [laughs] I don't know. But it was like, yeah, but the money went to a hospice or something yesterday? Yep. Yeah, yeah.

And we rode the Prairie trail yesterday, which is a 20-mile trail from Cresco, Iowa to Kelmer, Iowa, with one small stop in a little town- Ridgeway... called Ridgeway. Yeah. And, um- It's-... it's, it is, it was flat.

And we picked up the mayor of Ridgeway, and the mayor of Ridgeway rode with us. That's right, yeah. We were, we were with, uh, um, a- Yeah... I don't know what you want to call it. Yeah.

[laughs] Everybody's try- everybody's trying to block the wind right now. Uh, we were with, uh, royal- not royalty. What is it called? Uh, I don't know. Uh. [laughs] A dignitary. [laughs] Dignitary, there you go.

Which, which- Was super dignified. Yeah. [laughs] That's, that was interesting. That was- Yeah. It was, it was a fun ride. It was not... We didn't quite make the entire distance. We made half. Yeah, we did half.

So it was still fun. And so we get another ride in. Um, and so that kind of brings me to what I wanted to talk about a little bit today. I actually wanna talk about clunkers, but Greg has got his. I haven't got mine yet.

Cap- which means Captain hasn't got his yet. So I think I'm gonna hold off and do a, we'll do a podcast about clunkers and the different clunkers we've, we're all been riding.

Uh, probably in a week or two we can get, uh, Brad Burge involved with it. Maybe by that time Captain will have ridden his for a bit. Um- You already have one, right?

I've got mine, and Brad's got the- That's the one that you ride everywhere. Yep. And then Brad's got the, the mate to that one that I got. Um- Yep... and he's [laughs] he's, he has used it correctly.

He's crashed into a planter. He's gone over the handlebars several times. He's just- Yeah, he's talking about that. I haven't gone over the bars in a long time. No, that's- That's the weirdest kind of crash...

well, but you gotta remember, he's a, he's a BMX guy, so that's his- Mm. That's how he starts life and ends life, is we test the bike out by how many times we go over the bars and how we went over the bars.

[laughs] That's how it works. But, um, so now to me, um, and I don't know how to put this, it's, it's kinda become gravel road season, uh, for... I mean, the cyclocross re- season for a lot of people. Oh, yeah.

None of us really cyclocross, um- What is cross? I mean, that's just a fall sport? Yeah.

Uh, um, and, and now because of the way mountain biking is going and with, uh, um, high school racing series and stuff, there's a, there's a huge overlap.

It never used to overlap, but now mountain biking and cyc- and cyclocross overlap quite a bit. And, um- Trying to- Um, yeah, no... open the window. Trying to figure out which way to do it so the windows either... Um,

I've never- So I've, and I'm not-... even watched it... cyclocross is, cyclocross is kinda cool. It's usually like a Saturday in one place, a Sunday the other.

It used to be short, like maybe, um, I don't know, maybe eight weeks long at the most. It was like 16 races in eight weekends, you know, like, like Saturday race in one place- Yeah... and Sunday in another.

And now it's, it's, um... How do I put it now?

It's, uh, it's extended because they're busy with, um, uh, they're trying to make it last all the way to the end of cycle- national cyclocross championship, which I think is like January, February. Hmm.

So they, they've extended the season a little bit to make it last longer, or to make it so it rides all the way through it, um, which kind of, to me, it took me out of it. I, I, I did a couple up in the cities.

They were fun. They were just like, I guess if you call fun riding your ass off as fast as you can for 35 minutes and puking a lung up, that's about [laughs] it. That's, that seems like- Without alcohol? [laughs] Yeah.

the bigger season for me, and I don't do it as much as I used to because I'm just not into it like I used to be, is, uh, around here, it's the gravel road season as far as, you know, races and rides and stuff.

Um- I have missed Iowa gravel- [clears throat]... when I was living in Wisconsin, 'cause Wisconsin has like some sort of deal with, uh, farmers and dairy trucks that almost every road is paved.

There's not a lot of gravel over there. And, um- That was, that's some of the best riding here. I mean, it's, it's not a road ride, but it's, you know, there's not a lot of traffic on gravel either. Right.

And that's kind of the best thing, and b- especially in like the driftless here, when we go up to Bluffton. Are we riding to Bluffton? Are we s- are we supposed to ride to Bluffton today? I don't know.

And the reason I brought this up was, is the one that's coming up, um, uh, uh- Cyclecross Rochester? Yeah. [laughs] No, uh, the Filthy Fifty is coming up, uh- Hmm... two weeks away, three weeks away, I think it is.

What is that? So when Trenton originally did it, it was out of Stewartville, and it was a shorter versions of, of the Omanzo, basically. It, it touched bits and pieces of the original...

Well, I shouldn't say original, but the Omanzo that used to be run out of Spring Valley, and it, and it touched in on those different spots.

So it would be like, it was, [laughs] it was actually nice, 'cause when you came to a really shitty climb, it turned and went a different way. Mm. So it was, it was fun. It was 50 miles, uh, first weekend in October.

It was a blast. Um- God, what is that one hill? That one hill on Omanzo. There's only one shitty hill. Yeah. Um- It's like named after a bird. It's like at mile 80. Oriel. Just... Or, yep. [laughs] The Oriel, yeah.

It's... Well, it's a... Let's put it this way. It's no longer in southeast Minnesota. If it still exists, it's probably up in Northfield areas someplace. I don't even know if they're calling it the Omanzo anymore.

the, the Filthy Fifty started in Stewartville, and it worked out well because it was on a Sunday, and they could use the fairway 'cause they're closed on Sunday.

Well, um, the property that they used that was a big empty lot, and it worked out well for the start and finishes now have buildings built on it, so he moved out of there.

And he's moved it to Lanesboro, who from, uh, we haven't been able to make it for the last year. Sue and I always do it on our tandem. Okay. And, um, it's, it's... I think he's found a home in, in Lanesboro.

I think there's actually more climbing in Lanesboro than there is where he was at out of Stewartville because you're following the r- river trail. Mm-hmm.

this year, and I see this year he added 100 miles to it. Oh, wow. So it's been a 50, 35, and a 15 for families, and now it's... And now he's added 100 to it, so that'll be interesting to see how that goes.

It, it's, like, maybe an hour, uh, west of Dubuque, um, south of here. And then, uh, Matt Fassbender, uh, uh, was a wrestler here at Lutheran, and he does Volga City, Volga City Gravel.

And so we literally- We're sitting there getting beers. Yeah. You guys sit down, take the bike apart. And then they're like, "We don't, we can't fix this here." And I'm wandering around behind the...

I don't even remember what bar we were at. Again, this is in Milwaukee, and I- Steel's Reel... I found an old rusty hammer. [laughs] And the kid's like, "We can't take this apart, 'cause we don't have the right tools."

And I figured out how to take the fork of the tool, and we held it in place, and the kid was just, he was in heaven because we were, like, we were cannibalizing bits and pieces.

We were using stones and hammers and any shit we could find laying around to fix this thing. We got it fairly straight. Oh, then- Somebody welded it... oh yeah, then Zeegle grabbed the piece, the, the arm.

We'd disassembled it from the, um, hub, and Zeegle took it over to a car mechanic just down the street [laughs] and had, had the guy weld... 'Cause you, we had literally busted the- It was like pot metal.
