Um, I'm surprised you even remember that. It's been so long since we've done one. Um, tonight it's just, uh, Kayla and I.

Uh, she's returned from RAGBRAI, so, uh, we, we're gonna try to hook up with a few other RAGBRAI people, but I don't think they're sober yet. I'm not sure [laughs] how much longer- I'm not either.

[laughs] I have a drink in my hand right now. [laughs] I was gonna say, and Kayla's just where Kayla always is. It doesn't really matter. [laughs] So, um, yeah, this is podcast number 33. RAGBRAI ended almost a week ago.

Yep. Um, so we've got RAGBRAI to talk about, and, you know, in five days we leave for SingleSpeed USA in Kansas City, so there's, uh, there's a lot. And then, oh, we're also planning a trip to Milwaukee, by the way. Oh.

Well, we've been planning that.

Well, no, I was gonna go to Colorado and ride, and I decided that a flight to Flagstaff was ridiculous when I could just jump in a car and drive with a bunch of drunks over to Milwaukee for a couple days of drinking, so that's our new plan.

Okay. Perfect. So just so you- Count me in... yeah, you can- Yeah... another, another reason for you to hang out with us and not go to work. Yeah. Oh, you ought to take a day off on that one, probably. Good.

Um- I need all the days off. Yeah, so let's see. So RAGBRAI this year, um, I didn't ride.

I was gonna ride a little bit, and then just too many things got in the way and I started coaching again, and that kind of put an end to that.

However, I'm not upset I didn't go because I looked at pictures from your guys' bus, um, and from Casey Clark and that group from the Jackhammers, and a few of my other friends that were out there, and that's a lot of people.

It was, yeah. It was crazy the amount of people. But I mean, for how hard the ride was, at the end of the day it wasn't that bad.

And surprisingly, the concerts weren't that crazy, though we didn't go out to the concerts every night. But, um, when we did go, like it wasn't abnormal for the concertgoers. The, the picture of at, um,

and this is sad to say 'cause I don't really like him, Hairball looked like a zoo. Like it w- looked like a- Oh... blocked line of people. We didn't go out that night. Yeah. Didn't ya? No. We did a...

It was kind of a nice year to get to know a lot of my team members more. Like, we did just more, like, campfire shenanigans, like- Nice... in our host homes. Yeah. Yep.

I mean, that's, that's, seriously, that's how, how, mostly how we did it- Mm-hmm... when we, when we rode a lot. It was- [laughs] You just strolling away... no, I got to... My ti- Watched the whole table just go...

We should probably start, I think of this every time- Mm-hmm... we talk about RAGBRAI. Let's start from the beginning because the beginning of your ride is hilarious.

[laughs] I always feel bad when we do day zero 'cause there's always something. Last year I, like, had Brad off the tip of the iceberg already 'cause he's like, "You guys struggle." They're old buses, okay?

But we've been preparing. Um, we had our biggest team this year of 57 people, uh, 37 those being full week, or ha- yeah, full weekers.

The rest, um, were, like, half weekers, and then we had a couple that were just, like, helping haul stuff back and forth. Okay. Um, and so Brad had put a lot of work into those buses getting 'em prepared.

They were all ready to go. Um, we literally are getting out of Rochester and we're like, "Hmm, kinda smells like smoke." And [laughs] Brad's like, "You need to pull over now."

So we pull over and all of a sudden I just hear them yelling, "Get off the bus. The bus is on fire." And I'm like, "Nah, this is a joke, right?" And they're like, "No, seriously. We see flames underneath the bus."

And we're like, "Oh fuck." And I'm like, "My bike is on the top." [laughs] I'm like, "Can I just get my bike? I need all my things." But yeah, we, uh, we called...

There was a sheriff at the, we had stopped at the gas station just south of Rochester there by my house. So I'm like, "I'm not that far from my house.

If shit's gonna go down, at least, like, I can just go home [laughs] and call it a day." That's right. [laughs] You know, you gotta think of the positives, but I was like, "Oh man, I feel bad for all the new people."

Like, this is their first experience. A lot of new people to RAGBRAI period, let alone to Roadster new, and they're just like, "Is this normal?" And I'm like, "Bus on fire? No, definitely not normal." [laughs] Oh.

But, uh- I, but, but you have to admit, it, I would bet because it was your brakes, right? Yeah, the brakes. Yeah. I would bet money with all the buses that are... And, and, and

what do you think, 80% of the people have old buses like that? Yeah. Yeah, yeah. They're all, like, you know, '90s or older buses. Right. They're old school buses. Yeah.

They're not meant to haul, like, the amount of stuff that we're trying to haul at the capacity or the mileage we're trying to do- Right, right... on the hot days that we're out.

But I'll bet every year there's a set of brakes that do that. There has to be. I don't know. All the teams seemed rather surprised when all of a sudden- Oh, really?... I was like, "SOS. Roadster bus on fire."

[laughs] Instantly, you know, that's the RAGBRAI charm though is, like, all these teams look out for each other, and instantly I was getting, like, phone calls and people like, "Hey, are you guys okay?"

And I'm like, "Yeah, the fire department's here. They're putting out the f- the fire right now."

Um, we lucked out that there was a sheriff at the gas station when the flames were, you know- Well, plus the fire station's just down the street. Yeah. The- So they...

Though it still seemed like it took a little bit of a time, but, um, yeah. Oh, I'm gonna tell you- We just sat there-... that... cracked. [laughs] Yeah. I'm gonna let them know too.

'Cause I do- I'm like, "Your response time, guys." I do know guys at that station. My bike was on top of the bus, so- [laughs]... the clock was ticking. Um, but yeah.

We grabbed, like, fire extinguishers and we were trying to put it out in the meantime. Uh, but yeah. We just cracked beers in the parking lot.

I have a really great meme of one of our team members, and he just has this, like, frumpy face, and he's like, "Everything's going to be fine." Meanwhile, the firefighters are, like, putting out the fire.

[laughs] Yeah, 'cause I... Well, you have to, you have to give me that picture of the, uh, firefighters sitting there hosing off your back wheels. Yeah. [laughs] That was pretty funny. [laughs] Yeah.

I- So yeah, day zero, a little bit rough. Um, we end up just, uh... We got a mechanic out there, so we lucked out on that too.

Like, all the RAGBRAI gods were just shining on us of, like, we're gonna figure out a way to get down there. 'Cause by the time we had started loading all these people into this... And thank God we had two buses.

So we had rented out the Bandits bus- Right... for the second bus- Yeah... 'cause we had so many people, and we didn't wanna bring the, uh, like a truck and trailer, extra stuff.

So we were starting to haul everybody, or put them in the second bus, and then they had put out the flames. A mechanic came. He's like, "You can just shut off those set of brakes and just run off three brakes."

And we're like, "Are you serious?" He's like, "Yeah, you'll be fine." So we, we ran on three brakes- Oh... all week long. Um- Oh, really? Yeah. Nice.

The problem was is the fire had, like, cracked the, I think it was the rim on one of the wheels, so they...

Or yeah, that night when we were, like, shuttling back and forth to the concert, all of a sudden one of our support guys is like, "Uh, we have a flat tire." And then we realized two of the other tires were also bad.

So we didn't have our s- our rotor bus for, like, the first two nights, 'cause we had to wait for a mechanic to come down to our host home and fix the tires. Fix the tires. Mm-hmm. So he got- So he br-...

three new tires... he brought the stuff to you and fixed it right there, there where- Yeah... you guys were sitting? Really? Yep. That's, uh... And we had, we, he blew a radiator hose. That's pretty common, yeah.

And the guy tried to t- the guy tried to tell us that he, uh, we blew the motor. What? Oh, yeah. Yeah, we, we wound up with a lawsuit against the guy. Oh, boy. Oh, no, it got ugly. It was like, there was a scam going on.

This is 20-some years ago probably. Yeah. But there were some guys that were like, buses were always breaking down. You know, like- Mm-hmm... the Bud Ice bus never made it anywhere.

And, uh, yeah, this guy was like, "Oh, I can make some money off of this deal," and thought he had us by the butt, and he didn't realize that there was some people are somewhat mechanically inclined.

And, and all of a sudden, he's in all kinds of trouble, and we had, uh, two of the guys with- that were, that owned the bus were well to do, and they're like, "Fuck that. We'll sue the son of a bitch.

We're going after him." So it was, it was a bit wicked. I didn't- Wow... I didn't need all that shit, but it w- Yeah... we had our bus fixed. All right. That's, that's fine.

But yeah, we just kinda rolled with it, so we didn't have a bus at the midway town the first two days, which was rough, 'cause the first day was kind of a hard day to have. And it was long, wasn't it?

Yeah, like, the average was, like, 80 mile days. Yeah. And they were, like, 3,500 feet of climb, so. That... Well, it was kind of a southern route.

And s- and people don't realize that the southern route is almost the, the hilliest. Yeah. 'Cause you're just in and out of the river valleys, right? Yep. Yeah. How many times- Um- Well, it wasn't a super southern one...

no, it was kinda more midway- Yeah... into Iowa, yeah. Um, but yeah, it, um, we made do. Like, people were super chill about it, and yeah. It was just really hot, though. That was my only complaint.

Like, I trained hard for this RAGBRAI knowing it was gonna be a tough route, and I, I still, there was one day where I debated if I needed to call an ambulance, 'cause I was, like, super sick. Really?

And my friend Luke was with me. And I don't think if he was with me, I don't think I would've made it to the host home, 'cause I was in pretty bad shape.

I, I- We had, uh, Todd couldn't eat or drink for, like, three days, and he was just, like, puking the whole time. And, and Todd's a really good rider. Yeah, he's a strong rider. Yeah. Yeah.

Well- And he was struggling, and, like, we had, like, a lot of people just dropping like flies. It was tough. I, well, I noticed that your guys' bus was slow.

You know, and usually I would give you shit about it, but in this weather, there's no way.

It, it's, it's, the, like, you and I were talking earlier, but the difference is when we did it, when it was, and I don't remember what year it was, but it was as hot as this, let's say. And, um,

we, and, and I think, I think n- the majority of the people on the ride decided that you might have a beer here, maybe one there, but for the most part, you drank water and got the ride done, and then got to the end town, and then you could start partying.

And nobody really, n- not, I would say nowhere near a normal RAGBRAI you would stop and have a couple beers every stop or something. It was, there was, like, no stopping.

I don't, I know we, I know at times we blew through, like, three, four towns before we'd stop. Yeah. So that sounds like, sounds like you guys did different.

I definitely tried to get m- majority of the miles behind me at the beginning, also because of the crowds. Like, I just got annoyed by the crowds, so I'd try to get ahead of the crowds.

Um, but I still made, you know me, I still made all my beer stops. Yeah. Well, I mean, there's- But there was a lot of, like, really fun, like, towny bars and that, and- And were they busy?

Um, yeah, 'cause everybody was just trying to get air conditioning. So- See, on ours, like I, I was telling you earlier, there w- I don't remember where it was at. They had, they had a stage and everything.

It was outside. They, they sent the band home, and we walked inside, and they had moved all the furniture out.

There's no bar tables or t- or, or stools or anything, 'cause they just figured they were gonna have this giant crowd and people would stand. Mm-hmm. And we were the only people in there. Oh, boy. Yeah.

And we're like, when we ride, like with the partying group, we'd probably be riding with you if we were riding. So we're in that, that mess of people that drink a lot, right? Mm-hmm.

And they're all like, "Nope, we're gonna get within the last 10 miles or all the way to the end," and then, you know. And then I think there was hardly any, any towns in between the 10-mile town and the end.

Or that, you know, in that, that framework. So even that town didn't have a lot going on. It was like, that was probably the most I spent in the overnight towns ever on a RAGBRAI. Hmm.

Because it was, it was just too hot to do anything. Yeah. Yep. But we, uh, yeah, like I said, I, I was not gonna give you guys any crap about sagging or anything, 'cause [laughs] I didn't.

Yeah, I didn't sa- Like, I just, I just pushed through. Some of the people- You just have to...

couple of people that we used to ride with a lot [clears throat] did go out on it, and they kind of, I think, I think Lou does the whole thing. But

Sharon, a friend of mine from Decorah, um, kind of goes down and does part of it, and she broke her foot, so she was, she was kind of riding a little bit of it, but not really riding.

She's more driving and going to the correct towns and hanging out and partying and stuff. [laughs] But, but she posts a picture of Lou, and again, last summer when there was this heat, he did have heat stroke. Yes. Man.

And he's, and, and even [laughs] so she posts a picture of him [laughs] and says, and says, "Yo, hey, if you see this, this is my friend. He's out there. You know, he's had heatstroke. We're worried about him.

We don't know where he's at. He's not, he wasn't in the van sleeping overnight. We don't know if he made it," blah, blah, blah. And I just smart-assly put up there. It's like, [laughs] "Uh, that's Lou. I'll see him.

I'll, I'll pick him up. I'll look for him next week." And, and- [laughs]... and Decorah, guess who I saw Wednesday night? [laughs] Oh my God.

[laughs] I go walking in the T-Box and, and all of a sudden, "Lou, how you doing?" [laughs] Nice. Well, I'm glad he's okay. Oh, yeah. 'Cause it was definitely scary seeing- Oh, yeah... some people out there that...

And that was the thing with the, them not closing the registration early, like their sag wagons couldn't keep up. And so we had a couple team members- Oh...

where they literally waited, I think, three or four hours before a sag wagon showed up, and they just lucked out, 'cause they were, like, telling...

Like, once they got in, the sag wagon would pass people, and they're like, "Sorry, we're done for the day. Sorry, we're done for the day." Oh. It was, yeah, pretty crazy stuff.

Um, a senator, the Iowa senator got arrested on RAGBRAI. [gasps] Really? [laughs] Yeah. Something about, uh, um, I just kind of skimmed- Tell me-... through the article.

But- Tell me, tell me it was nudity, public nudity, please. No, unfortunately. [sighs] There was a nudist group, though. That was fun. I was glad to see it. Really? Yeah. Um. Two girls... Well, they weren't fully nude.

They had, like, shorts on, and then they had, like, kind of like a, I don't know, a bodere type thing, but, like, tits out. And, like, the guys just had fanny packs, like, covering them. Really? Yeah. Naked and afraid.

[laughs] It was the hottest day. I was kind of jealous. I was like, if I wasn't with people I knew, I would probably [laughs] be doing the same- [laughs]...

and going down every water slide, 'cause you just had to do what you needed to do. It was definitely- Was there more water slides? There... Let's see. I counted four water slides.

Um, only two of those were legit though, and the one, like I was having heat stroke, so I didn't go on it, 'cause I just wanted to get home. [laughs] Yeah. Which is super sad.

You know Kayla's not feeling good- Oh, oh, right... when she passes up a slip and slide. Yeah. Yeah, it was, it was, uh, I... There was, the pictures I saw from my friends that went, the ones that normally go, um, were,

other than the crowds, like, and I said, like, you know, I have, I have, I'm not gonna get into it, but I have a, I have a personal reason for despising Hair- Hairball.

And so the fact that they're bragging about, like they said there was 10,000 people in the streets, and it looked like it. I mean, it looked like it was wall-to-wall people. And I'm like- Oh, I'm glad I didn't go...

"Hey," that was what? Ames? Yeah. I don't think it- Ames was hairy. And it was, it was in the '90s, so I'm thinking- Yeah... 90 degrees- Super muggy... that close in a really shitty band.

You people are drinking far too much. Yep. 'Cause I couldn't, I couldn't do it. Uh- Yeah. We had, uh, Loudmouth Brass at our host home that night, so we just hung out at the host home. Nice.

And most of our host homes, the problem with bigger towns is you get into host homes that are, like, you know, four to 10 miles away from where actually all the activity is.

So that kind of deters you from wanting to go into town. Well, yeah, but I think generally speaking, the people that, I don't know, maybe not, I mean, j- when I did- I just get sketched out dr-...

the- Like, biking in city, like leaving my bike out somewhere to get stolen- Well, that's it, yeah... A, and then biking home at night, like, drunk and, like, in the cities. I don't wanna get hit by a car or something.

No, I totally agree. And, you know, and, and, um, it just seemed to me like when I did it, the people that stayed in host homes that were out had no intentions of ever coming into town. Mm-hmm.

And they were, they would ride to their place. They had their food there, whatever. What was with the, um, the guy with the tractors in the shed? Yeah. That was a really cool host home. Um, he just collected tractors.

He kind of did like Spinner's parents, where they, like, go around to shows and stuff and like- Oh, okay. Yep... um, do parades and whatnot. But yeah, his, he had all these giant pole sheds of just, like,

like old John Deere tractors. Like it was a museum. But what- And his house was amazing. Like the people you meet when you get some of these host homes, I'm just like blown away. I'm like, "What do you do for your job?"

[laughs] Like, "I need to rethink my career." Well, I mean, it, it is a thing on RAGBRAI. You have to admit that, you know. There's a guy like that.

He's got, they line their tractors up on their, in the front yard and stuff. Yeah, it was, it looked like there was a lot more ditch sitting going on, too- Yeah... than normal. I mean, we always did it anyway.

We didn't care. We would start a party in, in somebody's ditch that didn't want one there, but, but it just seemed like there was a lot more of it with, you know, just finding shade. Yeah. Yeah.

It was a struggle to find shade, and yeah, that's why we would make bar stops, so we can get some AC and shade for a little bit. Sure, yeah. Um, and I'd been training.

I wanted to keep up with the fast guys on the team, so that was kind of my whole goal. So it was a little bit different RAGBRAI for me, 'cause I was trying to keep up with those guys the whole time- [laughs]...

you know, flying. Like, their average on a casual day is like 20 plus. So like [laughs] I was definitely, like, trying to... I was struggling- And-... to keep up. And- I did okay until we did the climbing part. Oh. Yeah.

Well, some of those climbs are pretty... They're, you know, if you can get a good run downhill, but even- Yeah... 'cause there were a lot of, there was a lot of deep valleys and then straight up out, right? Oh, yeah.

Yeah. The rollers are fine. It's when you go to a flat to, like, one of those, like, long graduals, then eventually I drop off, 'cause I just can't keep the power up.

Well, and, and you still don't wear cycling shoes, do you? Nope. Drives Casey and everybody insane. They're like, "Do you realize how much faster you'd be?"

And I'm like, "Somehow I keep on getting stronger, so I think I'm fine." [laughs] Fine. And I haven't crashed yet. No, I- I'm like the only one that hasn't crashed... no, no.

Oh my gosh. Yeah, he's nuts. Yeah, that's another level. I'm not there yet. Someday. No. [laughs] That's why they have fat bikes. You can go outside and ride your bike. You don't have to be inside.

[clears throat] Yeah, I do have those too. Um, what else? Uh... So we talked about the nudist. There was a guy that rode backwards on his bike, so like a little BMX bike- Yeah...

that was going forward, but he sat on it backwards, and he did over 500 miles backwards. He did it that way the whole way? Yep. And then the, the dude with the red, white, and blue, um, penny-farther- The, yeah...

high bike, he- I saw him- Yeah... quite a few times. I saw a bunch of people t- a lot of people were taking their pictures with him. Yeah. He looked like he was doing well. Um- There was also a double-decker. Yep.

So a guy had, like, welded two bikes together, and then, like- It was a-... chained... that was one of the Iowa guys. The Bike Iowa guys? Yeah. Well, no. I don't think so. No, I was thinking the Osage guys. Oh.

I, uh, 'cause- That would be cool. I'd like to- Because I got a-... talk to him more... I got a, and I thought it was from them, but I'd, I'd, whoever that was, I know. Okay.

I don't remember who it was now, but- It was, like, a red... Yeah, it was a double-decker- Yeah, yep... two bikes that were welded together, and then he, like, chained- Yep... them to- It was a cool setup.

[laughs] Um, the troopers were super fun this year. Looked like it, yeah. Yeah. They had, they officially named themselves Team Buzz Kill, and they handed out wristbands.

Yeah, they really made a turnaround from a couple years ago when I think I'd talked on that podcast how they were really bad, and we had to have all these, like, meetings and stuff. I, but I, but

I, I will never blame the troopers themselves. We've had, we've had- You can't turn away people from getting water. It's not- That was the biggest thing that year... but that's their job. That, that, that's not them.

And that- But yeah, the troopers were super cool this year. It was- I mean, if you have a buddy that's standing there sleeping with a beer can on his chest, and they go, "Hey, your buddy's still standing there."

You go, "Yeah, is he sleeping?" They go, "Yes." "How long can he do that for?" You go, "I don't know. Should we see?" He goes, "Yeah." [laughs] So, so they're all, they are good guys, but- Yeah... um, yeah.

and then stay someplace like, again, like, you know, at a relative's place or something like that where we could all crash in the yard or something.

Uh, I think it was still 70 to 80 miles. Was it really? Yeah. 'Cause usually it was like 40. But the climbing wasn't as bad, 'cause I remember- Sure... 'cause the day before, so day six was where I, like, almost died.

[laughs] And so day seven I was surprised that I felt so good again, but I think that's 'cause it wasn't so much climbing again. It was still windy, but, like, it was, um, still I think like 70 miles.
