Another podcast, another screwed up one probably. This one's gonna be tied in with two other ones. Tonight sitting in with me is Brad Burgy, a buddy of mine from hockey, coaching, um, he's worked in a bike shop.

The, uh, the first beer we had of the day was a beer called First Karl, and it was the second beer in an advent calendar, so it's a, uh, um- Quite delicious, might I add... it was a, uh, Kellerbier from, uh, Germany.

And this beer that we've got now is, he bought it because it's got a fucking dinosaur on it. Um, this is, um, from, uh, Project Brewery. Abrontosaurus Rar. Wow. Can't really go wrong with a dinosaur. That's right.

It's a dinosaur, we're happy guys. So two reasons he's out here. Um, h- this is his, he's been itching to do this for a long time 'cause he wants to hear his voice on something other than just at a bar with me. Yeah.

Yeah, I, I, I gotta believe that they're mates. Mm-hmm. I mean, they're, they're, the paint scheme, the seat- I think the only-... the fenders, everything looks the same- The only-... except for hers is a Mixie.

I think the only difference was that, you know, that hers has the cruiser, the cruiser bars. Well, the Mixie frame, yeah. Yeah. So it's got a slanting top tube, right? Yeah. Yeah.

Other than that, they are, uh, pretty sweet rigs, pretty retro, so right up my alley. And they'll be, they'll be bar hopping on these this summer after we- Yep... clean them up a little bit more than that.

And, um, I don't know if they even ha- I don't think they have a, you know, like where Minnesota and even Iowa's doing 10:00 closings. As far as I know, those guys are doing nothing down there- Okay...

because they went to, uh, Pat sent me a text today, and he was at, he was in, at, uh, it's called, uh, Coach, Coach House? Yeah, Coach House Bar. It's this dive little thing in, in, um, Scottsdale, and he was there.

It opens at 6:00 a.m. and closes at 2:00 a.m. every day. Wow. Yeah. A- and, and it's got a million Christma- uh, look it up online. It's a really cool looking place.

And they're, and they were, he had to take a day of PTO today, so him and his- [laughs] So they rode over there for breakfast and then- That's awesome. Yeah, I mean, they got...

They're, they're, the only difference from the last time I was there, there was a taco truck t- outside there permanently now, where before it was just some guy'd pull up in a van and start making like pancakes or something.

That's sweet. It still kicked ass, yeah. So in Iowa, is it kinda the same, you know, like it, it was when the bars were open here where it's just kinda- It's not, you know, it's everything's shut down.

You know, you can't, uh, you can... Only so many people can be at the bars and- Y- yeah, and you know, and they, and they just recently pulled the barstools away from the bar. Um, they hadn't gone to the far [laughs]...

In fact, I was at... I did stop into one because they had to-go. Uh, was that my, uh, M- uh, Mark, um, uh, Bachman or Mike Bachman, a buddy of ours, um, has a bar down there called T Box, and we...

I stopped in there because it had to-go drinks. Yes. And I mean, it was fucking awesome.

So it was like I bought a Bloody Mary, which comes, uh, um, it was like two of them, so I suppose a, a regular Bloody Mary is like, say, it's two 10 ounces. It's a, it's a... I don't know.

It looks like an orange juice bottle. So- But they're, they're clean and they, and they literally mix the drinks in there.

So I bought a cranberry vodka and a, and a Bloody Mary, and the Bloody Mary was kickass and you got two skewers of

pickle and a pepper and meat stick, you know, the, the usual stuff for a, for a Bloody Mary and then they send that little baggie with you. But it's just awesome- [laughs]...

to walk in and, and go, "I want this and I want this" and then they, they, like- [laughs]... mix them in a bottle for you and away you go with your drink. It was cool. So there's...

Was there, like, a multitude of options you could get for drinks? Not a ton. I mean, some- Can you go into, into detail as to why you picked the vodka cranberry? Well, my choices were- [laughs]

Probably not a g- But it was, it was a, it was, uh, um, oddly it was cranberry juice, orange juice. Just didn't seem like, it seemed like, "Nah, what the hell." Lemonade, and it was cold, so that doesn't work.

And then, um, cranberry, lemonade, orange juice, and then Coca-Cola. Yeah, which just sounded disgusting, so cranberry's like, "Okay, I'll go with that." I a- actually, I'm gonna be honest with you.

[laughs] I didn't touch it. Casey drank the whole goddamn thing. Oh, yeah. So I didn't even, I didn't get- Blame it on your son. Yeah, well, that's, well, it's, you know, he's living in my house down there.

So in Rochester where they're buttoning the tables up and then you can sit around there, which I thought was kinda cool, and I would, I wouldn't even mind if bars did that permanently. Sure. It was kinda cool, actually.

I mean, it might be a pain in the ass for the bartenders, but for sitting around and talking to people, it was actually better than sitting at a bar. And so it was kinda cool. So, um, but Mike is probably gonna do it.

He's like, I h- he... When I gave him, he goes, "We never thought of that, about that, but why can't we?" So, um, keeping them socially distant, I suppose they're gonna be six feet apart and- Sure... I don't know.

But again, the other thing they're doing, and I think they can do it in Minnesota now if they ever fucking open up, um, is they're going, they,

with their kegs and stuff, you can take a growler or a squealer or whatever you want into and they will fill your growler for you too. Oh, that's cool. Like I could go get a growler of Pabst.

So that's the, I mean, that's the, the things that we don't have. I mean, I'm born and raised in Minnesota, and, like, I, I remember going to...

I think we were in the Dakotas, and you could, you could take your beer with you as long as it wasn't in their receptacle, like their glass. Oh, right, right. But they would pour it into, like, a, a plastic for you. Mm.

And, you know, like here, that's, like, that's not a thing. So I'd, I've noticed, uh, the restaurants and bars in town that are, are now doing carryout, they, they'll make you, like, a, a Bloody Mary mix.

So you can get their bloody, but obviously they don't pour the booze in it for you. Right.

So which, you know, I guess- And, and, and they, and they're- You can control the flow that way, but- And they're allowing them to sell whatever cans of beer or bottles of beer they had, not...

But, and so taking that a step farther then, in Iowa's allowing you to go in there and with their, with their taps- And fill-... they're allowed to fill a growler or a- Of whatever... I don't know. What do you...

So, so that the, there's a, there's, I, there's a gazillion terms for it. What do you call the... There's a growler's the 64 and the 32 is, what do you call it? Is it a crowler? Well, crowlers is cans to me.

That's the can, right? That's the can. Okay. So we've- I guess I've always just called them a crowler... we've heard, I've heard them called howlers. Maybe that was what I heard. Yeah. Okay, yeah.

Well, so my favorite one was in Sioux is out, out east they call them squealers. Okay. [laughs] Yeah, so they're squealers to me. Sure.

But whatever, but you can fill those at, at, at the bars down there, which is kinda cool. So I- And it's like you can pick whatever you want, whatever you want? Yeah, whatever.

It's, I, I was under the impression whatever they have on tap. That makes sense. Yeah, because they're n- they're, the, uh, Iowa's, I think, a little more lax in that, so.

So the nice thing is, and if, you know, to stay safe, if you don't wanna go in, you just meet the guy at the door and he goes in and fills your growler. Sure. And you pay him and you stay outside.

So it's kinda cool, actually. Yeah. I mean, it's what they can do to stay alive, I think. Well, it- For a lot of those places... it was really interesting when this second shutdown started.

It, I saw, like, a lot of bars were doing the, you know, the, the buy one, get one free taps. Oh. Or they were doing, like, 50 cent taps. Like, it was like a college town all of a sudden.

I mean, uh, what else are you- Well- They gotta dump the kegs. Yeah.

I, and you'll hear it on here later, I had to admit, so I took, before we went on the Santa Rampage, um, what little bit we did do of it, we did a small version of it, um, a week ago Saturday. Okay.

Um, and we did it just to raise money. It w- I mean, um, Toys for Tots is hurting for their...

They're closing, shutting down earlier 'cause they have to disinfect all the toys, so we- Yeah, 'cause they have to quarantine the toys, don't they? Well, they're gonna disinfect them. Okay.

So they have to, they're gonna separate them, disinfect them, and then get them set up for the families they're going to. So we, we kinda like just three of us went out. Um, I used my Grinch costume. I saw that.

I, oh, next year I'm gonna get one so I can talk 'cause you can't hear shit out of me, and alls I wanted to do, I mean, I literally l- watched- Like, um, there was a guy in...

There's a guy in the UK, um, you know, uh, Jim Carrey's version of it where they're lipping people- Mm-hmm... and I can hardly wait to fucking lip people in that thing. [laughs] And that mask doesn't work. Okay.

I scare the shit out of little kids with it. In fact, I got a- Well, sure... in fact, I, we were outside of Bro- It's probably less scary than if you're not wearing the mask. [laughs] Well, true. But it was funny.

I was outside of, I was outside of Brothers and, um, well, that's where we started, and with our first trailer of stuff and, and th- this car pulls up, but this little girl's waving at me, and she's all into it.

Well, little did I know her sister wasn't. [laughs] So that's always good. So, so I, I kinda like creeped them on the window. So only the older sister liked it.

And the older sister's like waving and looking at me, and the little sister's in the car crying her eyes out. I was like, "Ah, great. Here we go."

[laughs] You know, and not even five minutes into this ride and we already got little kids crying. It's like all the kids you coach, they're just- And the best part was-... they always cry...

is I get a text later, "You made my friend's kid cry." [laughs] So s- so y- it was somebody that- It was some-... knew you... no, the people that- Friend of a friend...

it w- the people that, that, that, that I scared the little kid didn't know me, but when they told their friend, their friend know me, and they go, "That's Chewie, and he's out in the costume."

[laughs] So, um, it's gonna get, this'll get doubled up, but, um, I had to go pick up the, uh, uh, posters and the Toys for Tots box, right? Mm-hmm. So we didn't look like just freaks out stealing toys from kids.

And I, so I went up to 63 Club to pick it up the Friday night that Rochester was closing down. Sure. And there wasn't a ton of people in 63 Club. I mean, it was, people were good, socially distanced. Yep.

You know, but there was, there, the tables were all full. So up to capacity. And everybody, I think they were doing... I don't know what they were doing. They might've been doing bucket beer.

I couldn't, [laughs] I couldn't put a straw through that mask. [laughs] I wore it up there anyway. [laughs] Just to, it was kinda like a dry run.

And I get up there and, um, a couple of girls from the kickball team are going, um, they're like, people are like, "What, what, what is he doing?"

They go, "Well, he's gonna go on Toys for Tots, and he came to pick up blah, blah, blah," right? I think we collected 300 bucks. Hey, that's all right. I was, yeah, I was like- Yeah... well, it was, and it was,

everybody's like, "So, well, you're doing this tomorrow. Uh, I'm not gonna come find you and give you a toy. Here's 20 bucks." You know, and that kinda stuff. Well, that was awesome. Well, that works good too.

Yeah, it was great. So, so that worked out really well and- Which is pretty amazing what, like Toys for Tots, like how far they can stretch 20 bucks. Oh, I'm sure the places will get- You know? Yeah, right.

So- So that's kinda cool too, but yeah, I, I guess I was curious, you know, how Santa Rampage went this year, you know, with COVID kinda cracking things down. So it was just the three of us. I saw that.

Um, uh, [laughs] and it was exactly what I said it was gonna be. It was the Grinch, Santa Claus, and some dude with music that kinda looked like an elf, and that was about it. But- Which was great, by the way.

[laughs] It wa- Like, [laughs] the riding group that you ride with, I mean, it, it was like perfect. Oh, yeah. Yeah. [laughs] And, and, and, and they're fun guys, and we had... And it was,

well, at least one of us didn't get as shit-faced as we normally do. [laughs] But it was still, it was really a lot of fun and, and, um, I think, honest to God, so the first year we did it it was just a ride.

And, and I, I, you paid an entry fee, and I spent all the money on stuff for everybody, and that was cool.

Um, last year Sue decided that she wanted it, it should be for a charity, so then she picked Toys for Tots, and we did it that way. And it was just the people that came in on the ride.

So we only brought in, like, I don't know, 40, 50 toys. You know, which is still good. Sure. But it w- but it wasn't... But this year it was like, well, we're gonna go out there and do that and bring us toys.

You know, and like Hyber brought me a hockey bag full of toys. That's awesome. Well, and this- My buddy Spinner from, from, uh, Wiscons- uh, well, I mean, he's still in Wisconsin. Yep. Um, um, k- kicked in 100 buck...

He gave Sue his money and go, "Go buy toys." Well, and I think, you know, this year would've, had it not been, like the COVID year with all the craziness going on,

I, I could only imagine that if you got what you did this year during COVID, I mean, we keep this thing going, what's it look like next year? Well, that's what I'm hoping.

I mean, uh, you know, every year- What a great cause... every year we've done the ride, it's, the, the numbers have gotten bigger. As long as you can keep people from going over the handlebars. Like, was that last year?

Did we not, did we have some, a couple people- Um-... over the bars last year? La- well, there was some crashes last year- Okay... but two years ago was the worst, I think. Maybe it was two years ago.

Yeah, two years ago- Okay. [laughs]... we lost a body. Spinner got lost. I cracked two ribs. That's what it wa- I was, it was- I remember you crashed- Yeah... one of the years. It was, that, that was the first year.

So well, a- and, you know, and this goes back to probably, um, this is probably gonna turn into our own fricking podcast because right now we're, like, close to being the end, but I wanna talk to you about hockey yet too.

But we, so, um, what happened the first year was is that I had a hockey game that night, so it's like no drinking- Mm-hmm... behaving myself, blah, blah, blah.

And then we get eight inches of snow, and then it's like, "Oh, great. I gotta play catch-up now." [laughs] And, and I caught up and surpassed everybody by tons of beers- [laughs]... except for maybe Spinner.

And, uh, yeah, and I was, and I thought I was being a smart guy by avoiding a crash and made it even worse. And that was, all in all it was a great night.

I, but I mean, that was just for fun, and then we decided that it should be worth something. Yeah. So maybe that's how you get me on one of these rides, 'cause we- I beg you to go on rides. I don't know how many times.

I offer you a bike. [laughs] The only thing I'm not gonna do is let you ride a fucking electric bike like Lucy and- Thad... Thad. Fuck those two. No, I won't e-bike, but I will get out and ride with you guys.

I have made that, uh, that commitment, and I'll, I'll stand by that. Um, but- Well, I like your, I like your attitude about the coaster brake, though. I, that's, uh- Dude- We could start a f- we could start... I-...

old bikes are cool. [sighs] I know, yeah. So when I, when I left BMX was when, like, the free coaster, so, like, you could roll backwards on your bike without having to pedal in reverse, was a thing.

So a lot of guys, believe it or not, I don't know how-...

you know, familiar w- you are with the freestyle portion of BMX, but like fakie tricks or going backwards, you know, that is still a thing, and became a really big thing.

So, uh, my appreciation for that has always been there because, uh, when I left, when I say left, uh, when I got out of the, the BMX scene that w- the, the stuff that we were building was, you know, free coaster bicycles.

So you didn't have, you know, the front and back brakes. You didn't have to worry about a gyro or any of that stuff. So it was, it was pretty cool.

You know, like, that, that was a, kind of an interesting time in BMX, and now a lot of the kids do the same thing. They ride, you know, brakeless or- Yeah... with free coaster. Yeah.

So, which I've always loved that, you know, the, the coaster brake stuff. To me is, uh, is always pretty cool. W- well, like you and I were talking earlier, you know, my, my... So I'd, I'd gone fixed gear for a while.

Yeah. And I haven't, I haven't done it for a bit, but every now and then I get the bug, and I, and fortunately I don't have one just sitting around here, because I know I'd ride that sucker again.

[laughs] Um, but I got, uh, when Handsome came out with a shop bike, which was a coaster brake, and I don't really think I'd, other than maybe riding somebody's old bike, I'd got into it.

But that bike for beating around town with a coaster brake and, uh, and, and the geometry of that thing, the set up is, it's, it's the funnest bike for just ripping around on. Oh, sure.

And, um, and then, you know, and then from there it's carried on, you know.

So there's, um, there's a clunker group and, and these guys are in Arizona that I, I've met, um, some of them are on Back of the Pack Racing, and that's all they ride is clunkers.

But it- but they've taken it, they've taken this to the neck- the next level.

I mean, it's a coaster brake, but it has a fin on it so that it actually helps cool it so you don't burn the grease and burn your brake pads down to nothing.

But these guys are riding incredible stuff on coaster brake bikes. And- That's awesome... yeah. And it's, and it's... Plus, plus the one guy that makes them, there's a cup holder right built in the frame right away.

Oh, [laughs] that's great. I'm still waiting for mine, but yeah. That- that's- it's awesome. So it's... I'd like to get back into it. I did,

before I was thinking about going back into coaster braking, I actually did fixed geared off-road riding. I had a 29er, uh, uh, what was it? A Van Dessel. And it, and it was, and it had, and it was a fixed geared.

And you ride with the guys in Kansas City, and it was really fun to do and watch. Those guys are cool.

It's like when you ride to a log, you're, like, bunny hop to get your pedals in the correct position so you can ride- Yep... over it. It was, it was incredible to watch and, and trying it was fun.

I rode Eastwood with it all the time. It was a lot of fun. Yeah. But, um, no, not anymore. Sure. Well, I think it brings a great deal of, you know, or a, a different skill, you know, especially with the off-road stuff.

I mean, I'd, I've seen some of the videos of that, that like, even on, like, you know, full suspension, uh, shifter bikes, I guess as I call them. I couldn't imagine that.

Like, single speed and that, I mean, fixed gear would be- Oh, fixed gear was kind of cool. It's, it's, uh, it was amazing. I, I, I... It's not for around here. Sure. It's, it's more of a flat,

uh, boulders and, and s- and- Sure... uh, um, just- You'll have to send me some videos. I don't know if those guys even do it anymore. [laughs] I'll have to find some. I know I- There's gotta be someone out there...

Um, and the fun thing is, is that since Brad's been walking around my shop, he is, he was commenting on hockey sticks and what the hell I was using them for, and he didn't realize there was such a thing as bike polo.

That might be the secret to getting me back- [laughs]... on a bike now in the winter. [laughs] Yeah. Well, just... Well, in the summer it's even more fun. Oh, sure.

Like, you literally, you literally go to an open, like, a soccer field, and you get a couple of those cheesy... It's the only good thing to use a soccer net for, the little, the little dinky ones. Yep.

And you just throw those out there, and then, and you go play. It's- I'm into it... it's fantastic. I'm into that.

DJ and the boys in, in Tucson, when I've gone down there and hung out with those guys, are the guys that have got me into it and taught me how to make the sticks. I mean, those guys- Okay...

actually were using, like, real polo sticks. Oh, okay. You know, busted ones from, like, the guys- Sure... on horses, and it's, uh, it's- Yeah.

And then naturally being a hockey guy, you're like, "Well, I could probably fashion something up." Oh, yeah. Well, I saw somebody else had a hockey stick, and I'm like, "Wait a minute.

I know where there's a whole bunch of those broken hockey sticks." Yep. I've got several of those in my garage. Yep. And it, and so it's a hockey stick and a piece of PVC pipe. Can you get any cheesier than that?

But- I mean, it works great. But- And it looks like it's taped together. No, no, no. There's actually a bolt through there, but I put tape over it so that, that the bolt doesn't... And then, you know, you gotta- Okay...

and you gotta, you know, you gotta put some English on it, too, so there's gotta be tape on it like a hockey stick, right? Yeah. [laughs] That, that's where I got the tape from.
