Yeah, well, we had kinda talked about giving, uh, uh, Northwoods' Hyperborean report on the second Wednesday, but, uh, with the forecast, I just thought it might be a good idea to give people an update sooner than later.

Well, uh, so it's, you know, we had, uh, an amazing, uh, cold snap a while ago with, uh, our lowest temp that we saw at our thermometer here at home was 39 below. Phew. Yo. Um, we, we all survived that up here.

Um, I kind of enjoy, uh, a little like, you know, extreme- Totally... cold once in a while. Um- Totally... but, uh, it's, it's now swung the other way this, uh, wacky El Niño year.

Um, we did just get about, uh, six inches of snow, so we had another recent snowfall that's, uh, all our trails are groomed in right now.

But our temperatures have been getting into the 30s and even upper 40s lately, and the forecast calls for two days of rain in the afternoon next week with temperatures in the upper 40s to 50.

So I just thought I'd let folks know if... I, I, I'm sure down by you guys, uh, most of the, the f- winter fat bike trails are, are probably closed. Yep. Correct? Yep. They are right now, for sure. Yeah.

So they're still open here, so if you're dying to get some, you know, uh, last minute, last winter fat biking in on groomed trails, we've still got-- most of our trails are, are fully open and groomed.

And although it gets probably too warm to ride them in the afternoon, they're, becau- it's been getting...

You know, it's well below freezing at night still, so you get up in the morning and they're, they're really hard packed and fast. So it's pretty great conditions, um, right now.

You know, you're up, it's, it's, you know, 27 degrees when you're riding around, so it's warm. It-- you can even ride into the 30s. It, it do- they don't start softening up until a little bit after lunch.

So, um, so anybody that's looking to get in some of that last-minute, uh, you know, winter fat biking, it's, it's primo right now. Right on. But it won't be for long.

They'll be, they'll be shutting down here, um, as well. Um, and then I also wanted to touch base on, uh, some of the events. Um, I guess first one coming up is a fat bike.

Berkey, any of, uh, your crew, uh, coming up for that one this year? Yeah, I'd, I'd... You know, some. I'm not sure who. Uh, I think it, you know... What is the, uh, forecast looking like if it's gonna be that warm?

Is, uh, does it have enough base to survive? Yeah, you know, it's, they, they've moved up the start time, uh, to start earlier so that they could try to take advantage of, [coughs]

of some, you know, the colder temperatures in the morning. But like I said, I'm looking at, uh, next week here. Our forecast for next week is 52 and rain on Tuesday. Fif- Monday, fif- high of 52, low 28.

Um, so that's still like, all, all up until Monday it's, it's above freezing, 39, 39, 41, 48, 52 on Monday. But it's like 12, 16, 27, 32, 28, so it's, it's cold enough to reset the trails at night.

But once you hit Tuesday next week, it's 40 degrees at night and 52 and raining, and then the next day it's 48 degrees and raining. Yikes. And Thursday 37 and raining.

Um, Friday 30 s- so the temperatures do start dropping though, so... Oh, Thursday we might get a little snow maybe, 'cause it's only a high of 37.

And then Friday, high 37, low 18, and I think similar for Saturday, which is race day, right? So, [coughs] um, so

I, I, you know, if, if they have the early start time and it, you know, everything freezes up at night, I think it, it'll probab- there's probably enough snow, you know,

packed down on the base at that Birkie trail that, that it'll be okay.

But if you've ridden it in the past on some of the warmer years like I have, um, you know, some of the hills on Power Line get pretty slushy and you're kinda like sliding all over the place.

But, you know, it's, it's fun still. Super. Nice. Well, um- So anyway, that's, that's, that- We're gonna- We've got a bunch of other events that are actually on schedule too. Cool.

Um, uh, so, so CAMBA traditionally has done like some women's weekend mountain bike clinics with a professional coach from up by, uh, um, Marquette Copper Harbor way, and, um, she runs the, the, she runs the clinics up there, their weekend clinics.

And this year we added a men's clinic. Um, one of them sold, one of the women's clinics sold out right away. The other one is close to selling out, and the men's clinic is close to selling out.

It'll probably be sold out soon. So anybody that's interested in any of those should sign up like today or tomorrow. Um, those'll probably all be sold out by then.

Uh, other events that we got going on, um, that y- some people may have seen, the Chequamegon 100 just got announced, so that's the, um, that's the 100-mile race on, all on single track, and it's, uh, kinda run by Terrene Tires and Esther Cycles, Tim Krueger.

Uh, you guys know him. Sure. Yeah. Absolutely. His, he's from here. His family's from, still lives on, uh, Lake Namakagon, and, uh, he doesn't live here anymore. I think he's in the cities.

And then his company's based out west, I think. But, um, but h- he and I have been in conversation. So he, he just opened up the registration for that. So that, that race is gonna be...

There's gonna be an actual race, but not a mass start. So it'll be like a, you know, like a six-hour window on race day. Oh, cool. Race any time during that, that time period.

And then we're talking about having, rather than, 'cause we can't have that big party like we always have at, you know, Rivers Eatery and stuff like that afterwards.

So what we're thinking about doing is, um, to g- still give people some value for their money, um, uh, have like a, a race, post-race,

uh, bag that, you know, that, that you get to pick up that's got some beer in it, you know, a water bottle, T-shirt, something like that.

Um, and then people can go sort of like off on their own and have their own little mini gatherings with people that are in their bubble. What's the date? So that's June- What's the dates? Yeah, the date.

Registration's open for that. Um, I think it's, it's, lots of people are signing up for that. They're also gonna have some new protocols in place for, you know, safe, uh, racing, but it's an actual in-person, uh, race.

That's June 5th. And there's a Gravel Epic with that as well. Uh, that race benefits CAMBA Trails, just like the, um, Chequamegon 100 does. Then, of course, the Chequamegon Mountain Bike Festival is, is on this year.

That's September 18th. And I don't know about you guys, but with the vaccine, um, stuff move along reasonably quickly, I'm pretty bullish on these fall events. Yeah. So, um, so that- I think it's, it's looking good...

that one might be pretty much back to normal. That would be amazing. You know, maybe wear some masks i- in the, you know, wear a mask in the, you know, expo area, but otherwise kind of back to normal. Um-

Lots of- The Tour de Chequamegon is on. That's the first weekend in October. Um, so that's October 1st through 3rd, I think. Um, and registration's open for that.

We're limiting that to 40 people, and, you know, that's bike packing and you're camping in different camp sites, and we'll be... That's, again, late, so I'm feeling good about the safety.

But, you know, we'll have precautions too where y- instead of everybody eating all at the same place, we'll let people take their food back to their own campground to eat and stuff like that. So- Right on...

It's, it's like, I don't know, feels like the world's kinda getting back to normal a little bit.

Yeah, a lot of the, you know, big music events are looking at September to kinda get back going too, so it's, you know, those have a, a much greater, you know, base of, of, uh, people at them.

So if, if, uh, if they're looking at it, I would feel pretty confident that September's gonna look pretty decent for cycling outside type events. Yeah. Yeah, I think so too.

Um, and I'm pretty cautious about this stuff, you know? Um, I'm not a, uh, you know, a denier or, uh, you know, any of that.

I, I, I'm, I'm cautious about it and, um, you know, we, we were supposed to have an enduro, which is in, in May, which is, you know, a race that you could do relative, relatively safely because, you know, it's not a big mass start, and I just didn't feel comfortable about trying to put it off with, pull, pull it off with the, still the, you know, questionable safety issues.

So we, we canceled that. You know, I'm, I'm, I'm not... O- our clinics are, are gonna be different.

You know, we're not having any indoor stuff there- This year for our clinics, which we always had indoor stuff, so we're changing things up with some of the stuff.

I- there was a, an article about, uh, Portland that had a bunch of gravel on their roads and they were complaining about it. I'm like, "Well, everybody wants gravel now." Right.

They were made of unobtainium for a while, but I managed to just score some, uh, 45NRTH, uh, uh, Kava, um, studded 29er tires. The, the, um, the Gumwall's version, um, for my Milwaukee 29er.

So I figured, uh, you know, our, our winter trails have been great this winter, but they aren't gonna be rideable for very long, and so there's... And our mountain bike trails won't be rideable for a while.

But we have so much gravel up here, but a lot of the gravel roads still stay icy and stuff. So, um, so I picked up a... I spent a boatload of money and bought two of those.

Yeah, I saw they came off ItemWatch the other day. I ordered a set up for one of our guys that helps out at the shop, so. Cool. Cool. Yeah. They're nice tires. They're nice tires.
