Um, well, I, you know, I'm sure people have heard of the Fat Tire Tour in the past on our shows, 'cause I know you've been on in the past, and, uh, PeeWee's I think been on the show. Has he?

uh, just biking in a, I was biking in a dance hall club. Oh, yeah, was... That's the one we went to, uh- [laughs] Oh. That's right, that was it. Yeah. Good one. Yeah, that was a good time.

Yeah, they let us kind of do anything. That was great. Well, that was- In the derby, in- inside that was awesome. Yeah. I think that was the pre-ride that I don't- Yeah... did we bike?

I don't, the actual event, I don't think we, we were in the- Right... but we did a derby on the dance floor [laughs] when we were- Yep... scouting the course. That was at the event. Yeah. Yeah, we did that at the event.

That's right. That was the one where, where, where- Oh, did we? Oh... threw the rock at the bottle, wasn't it? Something like that, yeah. Yeah, there were a lot of people in there, man. There was a lot of people.

That was packed. So what, what year, so what year are we at now? 2013. 37. Yeah. 37, holy cow. 37. Yeah. Um, so- Crazy... tell our, tell our listener about, uh, what's going on with this year's event.

I know it's just slightly different than, uh, normal, but not as different as last year was. So- Correct, yeah... just a showdown date- Yeah, so-... where we're meeting, all that kind of stuff... sure.

Yeah, I guess a real quick backstory if you're not familiar, um, it's a casual paced ride.

It's typically like a, a bar hopping experience where we go to different breweries and bars and, uh, people show up with any kind of bike, even though the name now, uh, everyone associates, if you're not familiar, they assume it's a fat bike event 'cause of Fat Tire, but 37 years ago obviously those things weren't around.

So you can ride any bike, uh, of any kind. People sometimes make their own bikes and, uh, it's just like a good time parade o- on bikes that we slow cruise through the town, 15 to 20 miles.

The course is different every year. The theme is different every year, and it's always a surprise the morning of, so you show up and find out what we're doing that day.

Um, and we stop at about four or five different breweries or bars. So that's the, like the backstory real quick. Um, this year we- we're calling it normal.

Um, we're just going to keep in mind, like keeping the environment,

uh, able to be never having to go inside if y- so if anyone doesn't want to go inside all day long, we think we've solved that and, um, that lets people kind of make their own decisions.

So you can go inside if you want, but otherwise we'll have food and bathroom options all outside and, um, and other than that though, it's gonna be fairly normal.

So we're gonna cruise around the city and stop at four or five places and, and, uh, experience what Milwaukee has to offer. Uh, sounds great. What's, what's your policy on e-bikes?

[laughs] We don't have any policy on any bikes, so I guess just [laughs] do anything you want. [laughs] I'm just looking at a couple of electric Sharps and thinking how fun those would be to do the Fat Tire Tour.

Oh, yeah, no doubt. Oh, yeah. I mean, they do have pretty fat tires on them, so. Yeah.

Well, I, uh, [laughs] historically I keep carrying a larger and larger speaker on my bike and there could be a year where I go e-bike just to, to take some of the burden off.

Um, but- When you get the full Marshall stack going behind the bike. [laughs] Yep. [laughs] Exactly. Uh, no, this isn't a race. Uh, so it's open course. We, we don't control the streets at all.

Um, we just give you a map so you can do anything you want. An e-bike is not cheating. Um, so whatever, whatever you feel comfortable with. About how many miles total?

Uh, I think this year it's gonna come in about 17 miles, but it's...

We're always in the 15 to 20 range, and then we, we add bonus loops, 'cause there are people that want more distance, and we try to find some, like, urban underground- That means-... trails.

And so, you know, you can always break 20 if you want. See. But the official course is in the 15 to 20 range. Sure. Right on. Um, what, it's, so it's on the 19th, June 19th this year, correct? June 19th, yeah.

We're always, uh, a- I- almost always the third Saturday or Father's Day weekend traditionally, so, um, that's a good guide. Once in a while, the calendar

shifts in a way that we have to, like, jump forward or back off of that, but, um- Yeah, I kinda know how that- So, yeah... Steel is Real this year because of the rescheduling of Summerfest.

We're actually gonna do it on the 28th of August instead of its traditional second- Oh... week in, um, September. But- Yeah... there's too much going on- Okay...

at Summerfest, too many bands I wanna see to not be able to- [laughs] Yeah... possibility. So August 28th- Yeah... Steel is Real, which would've been Pee-Wee's other ride, so. Yep. Yeah, right. Nailed it.

And I don't know exactly- Yeah... what it's gonna look like yet. I haven't... It's probably time to make an event for that, I guess, huh? Sort of a save the date thing going on. Sure. Probably, yeah. Mm-hmm.

So you guys, we're gonna meet, uh, at the traditional s- starting spot, Best Place, is that correct? Best Place, yep. We...

It, back in the day, it would change location, start locations too, and it just became a bit of a nightmare of as we grew and grew to, you know, we've broken 550 people the year before COVID.

So we found a great spot at, at Best Place, and they can handle probably double if we actually grew that big. So yeah, that spot we wouldn't change short of them going out of business.

And, uh- Oh, no, they're- Then from there we just- They did have a little bit of a tough time.

I was up there for a quasi car show last weekend, even though they didn't lift the mask mandate until the 1st, so they didn't have some of the parked cars pulled off the street.

But it was still a pretty good event, and I saw Jim and Karen, and they were enthusiastic about things reopening and them being able to actually- Oh, yeah...

maybe have more than 10 people in their building at a time, so. Yeah, right.

Yeah, I mean, they, they've expanded over the years, so they've got, you know, multiple halls and, and outside spaces and, and I think they're trying to block the street off this all summer.

I don't know if that permit went through, but- Oh... um- Mm. That active street. They were telling me- Yeah, that would be cool... they were hoping that- Other-... the street would be closed. That would be great.

Other places are able to get it done. I think there's, Nomad's closed now, isn't it? Yeah. Yeah. There's a couple places that have already gotten it pushed through, so I would expect that, uh...

You know, that's not really, it's not a through street anyway, so I don't see why they wouldn't shut it down. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Right. And, but either way, like we kind of block all traffic when we're there anyway, so.

[laughs] Right. We kinda stand around in the middle of the road, saying, "Yeah, you gonna wanna-" We don't need a permit. [laughs] Yeah. Come on, car. Get your common sense. What the... Yeah, yeah. Well.

So what, what time do, uh- Yeah... what time do festivities get underway? Well, we always plan for a 10:00 rollout, um, but we tell people, like, they should try to get there at 8:30 or 9:00 at the latest to register.

It takes a little bit, and then grab a drink, and just, we got a DJ, and just enjoy the morning so you're not rushed and, and, you know, if you wanna stash something in your car, like the swag kit we give out, you gotta run all the way back to your car in a parking ramp.

It's, so we try to say, like, you shouldn't show up past 9:00 if possible, and then we sh- shut registration at 9:45,

and some last-minute announcements, maybe a costume contest or something before we head out at 10:00. Sounds good. Um, hey- Yeah, we play bike games all day too. I didn't, I probably didn't mention that.

Like every stop, we also have some- Yeah, we also have a lot of fun, like, like bashing the half barrel or quarter barrel or whatever it was and stuff. Yep. Right. Beer barrel bump. [laughs] Yeah.

I think we had, we had, we had bowling one year. Yep. I think. Yeah, there's like- Uh... eight or nine games we rotate through the years, yeah. Um- Some off-piste, you know, the some, the skid contest.

Being that it's Friday today- Yeah... uh, when does, uh, so registration, is there any kind of, uh, deal people should know about or is it already too late for those slackers that haven't signed up yet?

No, it's a g- this is good timing. Um, the price goes up on Monday, uh, but only five bucks, so it's not like that big of a deal.

But, uh, you can register now for the cheapest rate at 40 bucks, and all day you get drink deals. So we negotiate good prices on drinks and food.

Um, you'll probably save m- you know, if you're official, you get a wristband to know you're part of the event. Um, you'll probably save, uh, the, the price of your registration throughout the day.

Plus, uh, we have a pretty good swag kit usually, so, um, I think it's a good value and, but it goes up five bucks next week, and then day of is, is another five bucks more, so 50 bucks. Very good.

Well, I, I'm looking forward to it because, uh, I like, you know, if the weather was like today, it's gonna be a bitching day. [laughs] It's beautiful down here- Yeah... today. So.

I'll say, like, I hope I don't jinx, I say this all the time, like traditionally, 37 years, maybe three days or three years we had rain of any significance, so, um, we're very blessed on that side.

Yeah, it's always been good. It's not like rolling the dice with Santa Rampage where it could be- Right... 70 or 30 with snow and sleet and uh, so. [laughs] Yeah, yeah. Yeah.

That's, that's something that I think's really unique is all the people that have started doing this in the last five, maybe 10 years, it's a really good time, fun party, but there's a, a really nice history behind all this that, that is a little lost.

We have a video on our homepage that captures what this used to be like. Um, all the guys that sort of started this, they're, you know, in their 60s now, but they're still doing it and it's just, it's cool.

Like, it, it was a bunch of guys that just loved bikes when they were sort of first being invented, you know, fat tire bikes, and- [laughs]... it started a really cool thing. Yeah. Yeah.

Yeah, well, I'm glad you can carry it on. Uh, uh, I don't know if people know that Pee Wee is, you know, he's getting older and he's had some, uh, some health issues.

Um, but he still, uh, shows up every ride, at least for the- Yep. In fact, he's...

Yeah, he does it on a, a dual or a tandem recumbent, and they've got a power assist wheel 'cause he has trouble making it the whole course, so he's hoping to try to do the whole thing this year still, so that'd be cool.

Yeah, that would be great. I, I mean, he's got a, a good captain on the front of the, the tandem- Yep... trike and, uh, that should be a great thing. All right. Yeah.

You probably know about it, but it's a, uh, bike fed oriented thing at Indeed Brewing. It's part of their Indeed We Can series- Yeah... where they're helping out- Yeah... nonprofits and doing some fundraising- Right...

Um, but we certainly do ha- There's lots of things we, we miss about Milwaukee. We were just down recently for, my brother was playing with the Trash Mountain Trio at Cohanski's, um, so we went down for that.

But, um, so yeah, we miss Milwaukee and I actually, I confessed to you, I think I sent you a text like, "I was gonna sign in early just so I could listen to Jason," um, 'cause, uh, I, you know, I miss the Fat Tire Tour of Milwaukee, of course.

Um, and but I do have a bit of local connection to that right here in my own little Hollywood Hills development in Seely.

Um, and I may have mentioned this to listeners in the past, but just down, uh, Hollywood Lane, the very end of Hollywood Lane, um, is the original sawmill built by Gary Penman, who built the Sawmill Saloon in, in my development, which is all built around s- the original ski trails in Seely, the OG ski trails here.

And, um, this was all happening around the time that Phil Van Valkenburg was the marketing director at Telemark. And so his...

When Gary B- came up here and, um, Phil was driving this old AMC Rebel, this 1960s AMC Rebel that was on the verge of death, and he always called it his, his Rebel without a clutch because the clutch was dying.

[laughs] And so when the clutch finally died, he donated the power plant from his AMC Rebel to Gary Penman, who stuck it in the sawmill that's just down my neighborhood bike trail here.

Um, and that sawmill was the original sawmill that Gary used to build all the houses in our development, as well as, like, the sawmill and the Lendert Lodge and stuff like that, so.

So there's a Pee Wee connection everywhere you go in Wisconsin. Yeah, it seems like it, for sure. [laughs] He's definitely made his mark, no doubt about that. [laughs] Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely.

So you've got something exciting going on up there this weekend. What's, uh- Yeah, for sure

So our, our CAMBA pals from, uh, Coon Valley, Wisconsin, uh, Chris Jackson and his crew from Bora Teamwear have been putting together this, uh, you know, really great race, the Bora Epic on CAMBA single track, um, for, for quite a few years.

And the, the proceeds from, from the event have gone to CAMBA and, and recently we're sharing some of those proceeds with, uh, um, Minnesota NICA team. They, they ride a lot over here on our trails as well.

But, um, so that's been going on for a really long time, and it's an interesting race because i- lots of people have done the Chequamegon Mountain Bike Festival 40 that, you know, Gary Crandell and those guys all put together, you know, whatever, 38 years ago.

Um, talk about the OGs of, uh, the mountain bike, fat bike world. And, um- Right... but they, you know, but Phil was up here at the same time as well, so Peewee wa- is great friends with those guys.

Um, but, uh, so it all sort of like is a, a small little world. But, but, you know, that race is so big that, that you can't really include much CAMBA single track on it.

So Chris Jackson, um, and the guys at Bora Teamwear who come up here and ride all the time as well, um,

they put together this, this Bora Epic that is, you know, 35, 36 miles of just single track and of CAMBA single track. So it's, it's a long ass race all on single track.

And, um, it's been won typically by a lot of the sort of like, you know, uh, big names that you've heard of before. You know, Matt Acker and Jesse Lalonde and, you know, that sort of crew.

Um- Jeff Ball maybe in there [laughs] Right, yeah. All, all that sort of, those sorts of folks have, have been winners. But, um, it, it utilizes the best of the CAMBA single track.

And then so I worked really closely with, uh, um,

with the event managers this year, a- one of whom is a, a local guy who's a good buddy of mine, TJ Barnes, and he's been helping with the course, uh, layout for a lot of years and marking it with arrows and all that sort of stuff.

And, and we w- went and rode through that with the management team and, and put in some, some good passing zones.

So, so like you don't have to worry if you're, you know, sort of like feeling like, "Well, I'm faster than the 10 people in front of me, but I can't get around them." There's gonna be a passing zone not that far away.

Um, so, so, uh, the race is sold out as far as I know for the mountain bike race.

There's also a, uh, a gravel, uh, course, um, that's a n- a 36-mile gravel course that's pretty fun as well, so people can still sign up for that.

But, um, uh, the Half Epic, which is half the course, it starts at, uh, the Double O trailhead, um, the r- the Full Epic starts down in Hayward at the, at the fish hatchery, um, Hatchery Creek trailhead, and then ends at the Birkie start area up in Cable.

So it rides essentially the, the entire length of the, you know, sort of OG, um, CAMBA system from Hayward to, to Cable. But, um, but so people should look at it. You can't sign up for the Full Epic.

I know that's sold out. The Half might be sold out. I'm not positive. Uh, but, um, it's, it's a really great race and a super fun vibe.

Uh, I'm gonna pick up, uh, I think 60 cases of beer from, that Bent Paddle is, is donating. I'm going up to Bent Paddle tomorrow and picking up all that beer, and so we'll have that for the racers.

And, you know, I mean, we kinda like up here in the Northwoods, um, uh, you know, I, I've always been a proud son of Wisconsin. Most of your listeners that know me know me for, for that.

Um, and, um, I've always sort of, uh, been a little bit jealously guarding our, our treasured trails and things like that and promoting them, uh, first over our neighbors.

That said, up here in northern Wisconsin, we kind of have this sort of like, uh, uh, South Shore Superior mountain bike club up here where, you know, we,

our, our, our trail users are, you know, even our locals will go ride in Duluth, you know, or, you know, and, and the, the folks up at Marquette, um, come down and ride here.

So there's kind of like this, this South Shore or if you wanna call it a North Shore if you're from southern Wisconsin, um, South Shore if you're talking about Lake Superior.

Kind of a, you know, regional, um, thing going on. And so, so Bent Paddle being a part of this, even though they're a Minnesota beer, they're a great beer, you know.

And, and, uh, uh, Fulton Beer is a, a part of like, Bent Paddle and Fulton are both part of like the Chequamegon Mountain Bike Festival.

I'm actually, I don't know if we're at the top of the hill yet, but I'm drinking a Fulton Sweet Child of Vine IPA right now, so [laughs] Oh, I'm happy to hear it.

I, I got a Fulton, uh, Sweet Child of Vine, uh, IPA, which is just a great freaking name, and it's a delicious IPA. It's a 6.4%, uh, 69 IBU You know, it's, it's pretty middle of the road as far as an IBA- IPA goes.

It's not like a, uh, an East Coast, you know, punch-you-in-the-gut sort of like hoppy IPA, but it's got some kick to it as well, so it's a, it's a nice, nice beer.

Yeah, we're on, uh, Sierra Nevada's Wild Little Thing, which is a slightly sour ale. I, it's- Ah, cool... the original- Biscuit and strawberry... the original taste, yeah, I, I caught strawberry right off the bat.

Me too. But now that I've been, now that I've already had almost a full one, I don't really quite get the strawberry vibe I did originally. It had a little pink foam- Yeah... like the light too. Yeah. Ah, okay. Yeah.

I, you know, I, I was already planning on replacing my, my, my two back rims when I got to Cape Cod. So I called Schwinn, and they're backlogged. They're backlogged until August. And I said, "Oh, shit." Yeah.

So I took my... I took Heather, I took Heather to Bike Zone, which is the bike shop around here, uh, at Cape Cod, and they, they do, they do wonderful work. I'm not saying anything bad about them whatsoever,
