the Berkey Trail right by the start- And I had gone out and skied, and I had come back. I was probably 50 feet from my truck going about two miles an hour when, uh, my left ski just twisted, got caught in some rut and

twisted sideways quickly, and then, um, went over my, my, uh, pole and I sort of just tipped over at the ankle and landed on...

And my hands are locked into my pole handles with the grips on them, you know, so I just sort of like, I couldn't stop myself even though I wasn't going very fast.

And, and, uh, um, the, the deck up there is, is man-made snow that they've been making for a long time, plus the, all the snow.

It's super compacted and hard, so, so it's, you know, kinda like falling on concrete without- Oh, shit... without stopping you, so. Ouch. But I have my fingers crossed it's not, you know, we'll see.

I just wanna be safe and- Yeah, for sure... get an X-ray. Well, that kinda leads into one of the reasons we wanted to talk to you today, is that the conditions up there, 'cause we have the Fat- Yeah.

Uh, so we wanted to see what you're thinking about, uh, what the potential conditions are and, you know, just how, how fat biking in northern Wisconsin in that Seeley-Cable- Uh... Hayward area is these days.

Yeah, conditions are, are really great right now. They're probably a- as about close to perfect as, as you can get. Um,

and, and the Birke Trail, which is a little different than the, the, you know, the single track, 'cause for the Fat Bike Birke you're riding on, like the skate trail one way and the, the classic trail the other way from, like the start line to Double O and back, right?

Right. Um, so, so that's on the Birke Trail, not on, you know, the, any of the CAMBA groomed trails.

Uh, and the Birke Trail, I was at, I was the, the licensed server for the, um, beer, the Earthrider Beer Tent, um, at the, uh, finish for the Birke in Hayward last weekend for Friday and Saturday.

So I, I talked to a lot of skiers as they were finishing, and they said the course was, last week was great and fast and good snow throughout.

It, it got warm last weekend, like it's starting to during the day, you know, lower 30s, and they said some of the hills would get a little slushy on the sunny side, um, later in the day.

But I think that's probably the same conditions riders will be able to expect. It's, it's well snow-covered from Double O north. There's a very good base.

We're gonna get a little bit, um, this weekend, a mixture of rain and snow it looks like, but temps are gonna cool off and get cold every night until race weekend.

So even if we get a little bit of melting, I think it is maybe only will make the course feel faster. I think we're, uh, from a, from a, uh... It's hard to tell, but it, it feels like we're edging in on, on crust season.

Um- Yeah, yeah, for sure... you know, with, with- Mm-hmm... temps in, temps in the mid-30s- Oh... and then cold at night, so that's, if you have- Crunchy...

sunny days, that lets, you know, that, that top half-inch melt and, and then freeze up hard and, and you can ride those crust, um, routes throughout the forest. That's a blast.

But so that bodes pretty well for the, the conditions for the, the race. There's tons of good snow on it still. Um, so- Do you, do you think it's gonna be advisable to run studs? I don't think it'll be necessary at all.
