What's, what's the weather like? What's the, what are the conditions like? What are you thinking for tires, et cetera, et cetera? Uh, yeah, the...

So we, we just, I mean, the big thing is we just came off a, uh, a big ice storm that, um, so everything was coated in ice and all branches were constantly breaking and trees were falling in the woods from the weight of the, the ice.

And, uh, so for a while all trails, including the, um, Birkie trails, were closed.

The Birkie, I just talked with one of their groomers, um, my buddy TJ, uh, and I ran into him today and he said he believes they have right now the, um, the Birkie trail clear from the start all the way to double O, um, going east.

I, I'm not... They don't have it done yet going west, but he felt pretty confident that they would have, uh, the long course all clear.

The short course, some of that stuff has not even been groomed this year, I believe, on part of the short course this year. So I'm not sure how that's gonna work out.

The, um, the guy that I think is out, um, cleaning up on the short course, Kurt Proctor, kind of, he's sort of their head groomer.

He sorts, sort of like his own weird little Jedi, you know, entity and he does whatever he wants and nobody quite knows what he's doing, um, just because he's, you know, Mr. Expert. So [laughs] he's been, been,

not been seen the last couple of days I guess. [laughs] Yeah. Everyone just assumes- Communing with nature... everyone just assumes- He's, like, camping out in the woods... he's... Yeah.

[laughs] Everyone just assumes he's out there, you know, clearing up that, that, you know, the short course, 'cause that's the harder section to clear probably. So our own backyard trails were, were pretty...

I just spent an hour and a half, two hours today, the end of the day today, out there clearing in, the connection out to that glorious view trail that, um, that CAMBA has and, uh, it's pretty slow going.

I mean, you know, you, you drive the snowmobile 10 yards and then you stop for half an hour and you chop and saw and chop and saw and drag, you know, trees and limbs and stuff and, and then you go another 10 yards and you, you know, lop and saw and lop and saw and do all that.

So, so it's pretty slow going. Um, but the Birkie, the nice thing about the Birkie with the Fatbike Birkie is they've got, you know, these big piston bullies.

So where I'm out there on a snowmobile with a lopper and a chainsaw and I've gotta manually pick up every limb and branch that I cut and, and manually drag it off, they go out and my buddy TJ, who's, like, a former hotshot and he's a good sawyer, he, he runs the saws and, and, you know, um,

uh, Richie, the, uh, one of the other groomers just runs behind him in the, in the, uh, the piston bully and, and just pushes everything off to the side, you know, 'cause they've got that, those big equipment.

So, so I'm pretty confident the, the trail will be clear. Um, so then next comes, um, surface. So everything is co- We, we had, like I said, we had, like, an inch of, of rain, so everything got, you know...

A- and it was warm, so everything got, you know, soaked with, with rain and then compacted some. So surfaces where they're groomed are hard and, uh, so they'll be fast.

I'd, I, I would personally, um, run studded tires just in case. The temperatures are gonna be single digits or below zero every night, so up until Saturday.

So, um, the course will be hard and fast in the morning, but it could be icy in spots. Um, I, I think you can certainly ride that course without studded tires. Most people probably do.

I'm just sort of spoiled by having Dillinger 5s and I just never take them off basically. [laughs] Yeah. Yeah.

It's, it, it- If you could afford $500 worth of studded tires, you- Well, you know, I mean, you don't really wear them out on the snow that much, so they, they last quite a while. Right.

No, you wear them out by skidding into- Yeah, they do. But, yeah... into cops. [laughs] But, I mean, they're the most expensive tires I've ever bought in my life for anything.

Not even, yeah, not even the truck or the car or the motorcycle or- I paid, yeah, I paid less for the- Yeah, yeah, nothing... snow tires for my Fiat... right. For sure. Yeah, nothing comes close. For four. Yeah.

But, but as you said, they last a really long time and, and they are amazing. So, um, so anyway, so that's the report.

Um, the, the one thing I'll say to folks that are coming up to race and then to ride the other trails, the CAMBA groomed trails, most of the trails are closed.

Um, still because, uh, and they probably, it's unlikely they'll get opened this winter. Maybe. Um, Camba, uh, volunteers have been pretty good, but, um, it's just...

Uh, uh, you know, I can't say that if, if things warm up and every, and all the bent over trees melt and stand back up again, it might be a different story- [laughs]... a, a week from now. Wow.

So you'll be a second This week I've, um-... firefighter... but this, this weekend most things are closed. Seeley Pass is open, Glory View is open. Uh, both of those were just recently cleared.

The hospital trails I know are open. I'm sure they'll have a few more things open. I haven't heard anything about, uh, the Seeley Hills Trails being open.

Uh, every time I, you know, go past one of the trailhead things, all I can see are dead fall all over everything, so it doesn't look like anybody's been in there clearing that stuff.

Um- Yeah, you, you sent a couple pictures down, uh, this morning, and, uh, how much ice was actually on the trees? It looked like it was, it was a pretty good, uh, pretty good storm. Yeah.

The trees are pretty much layered with, with, you know, a, a quarter inch of ice- Mm... solid. So it's, it's a, it's a weight. That's a lot of weight. And so- Yeah...

because all these limbs continually are just constantly breaking off- Snapping... and falling.

So, um, uh, but it, it has, you know, just from some wind and some sun and natural evaporation, um, we have lost some of that weight in, in the more sunnier spots. So the forest is sort of rebounding and I'm...

Uh, next week the trails, uh, it sounds like it's gonna be warmer and the trails should open up a lot more, but there will still be all the dead fall to clear, um, the actual branches that, that broke off.

Part of the problem right now is that so many of these, these smaller trees are just bent over and they're bent over across the trail. So those, when they, when they melt, will stand back up.

[laughs] If you look at the course, if you look at the course, I mean, you know, they go down on, you know, the, the skate trail and back on the, on the, um, classic trail, um, so there are places where they're close together, so you could just cut across and catch them coming back too.

I, I've never heard that you're allowed to do this, but everybody else is riding their bikes on the Birkie trail this one day anyway, so if you wanted [laughs] to, you know, just jump in and, and ride along for a while and then cut across to the other side and then ride back a little while or something like that on the Birkie course and cut back and forth from the skate to classic, um, trails, I think you could probably manage probably four spots.
