It was a beautiful night to ride bikes, so we were able to ride our bikes down there and, and, uh, they had some pretty neat art. Some of it was, um, it, it was starting to get really expensive.

Um, I think the piece that you were bidding on, if I'm, if it was to add to your collection, was really expensive. I bowed out at 304. Yeah. [laughs] It was a Mark Winters piece. I think it went for, like, 450.

I love, obviously I love WMSC, and I have to apologize right now 'cause I had no idea your, 'cause I'm not on the books of face, that your, uh, your benefit was for raising money for WMSC. Right.

I obviously would've donated. And we raised 130 bucks- Sweet... for the WMSC radio programming studios and operational expenses, and I did win a piece, but it was nowhere near that expensive.

It was one of the few other pieces I saw that had any metal on it, which I've kinda been trying to do every year now- Oh, there was-... is get something with metal... there was one.

I was really trying to stay away from looking. I, I like did, like, one quick look. I'm like, "Mm, nothing's really grabbing me yet." Then the more I looked at it- Yeah...

their, their site must've been goofed up a little because I originally bid, the opening bid was 50, and then it said that I'd lost the bid, and I'm like, "I don't think I did."

So then I bid again against myself- Oh, and it went to 500... [laughs] raised, raised it another 10 bucks. There you go. It's for a good cause. But it's cool. It's, it's actually a neat piece. I got it in the other room.

So Cory, just, uh, maybe start with what's happening, uh, with your role with the River West 24 and... So, uh, I took control of bonus manager in, I think Nicole was still part of it in 2019. Um,

and but I was quickly climbing, uh, the ranks, if you will, and, um, then we had the bonus edition last year, and I took that on, pulled in 100 bonuses. Um- That was a lot last year. That was great.

Yeah, it was, it was wild. It was a lot of fun. Mm-hmm. I got to really know how to use Excel. [laughs] Um, and then, you know, this year, though, we can have laps again.

That's very- Very cool that we're bringing that back. There was a little bit of debate on it, uh, but we ultimately decided that we've always done this as- Yeah... as a race. We need to continue doing it as a race.

Um, what is cool is that a lot of people from last year, you know, they just told organizers that they just loved going to the bonuses and they'd prefer not to ride the laps. So we found a happy medium, and

unofficial riders can go to whatever bonus they want. That's genius. And, um, and they can participate however they want. If they wanna buy a T-shirt, they can.

Otherwise, we've got the regular registration where everybody gets the T-shirt and the stickers and, you know, and then they can be part of it and ride laps and get the manifest.

And, um, yeah, and so we're like 10 days away. Yeah. Yeah. Showtime. Yeah. Seven days when the show goes up. Yeah, right. Yeah, right. [laughs] 'Cause it's Friday on the eighth. 'Cause it's Friday now.

I stepped it up because the way that, um, everything's planned out, you have 46 bonuses every hour, but then there's time for a couple overlaps.

So near, near the end, I, I intentionally kinda stacked it for those teams that are really, like neck and neck at the end. Cool. Yeah. Maybe you get a little competition in there. Fuck yes.

Not just where you are on the road. You are serious. Yeah. So are, are you allowing people to go out there and, and ride ahead of the, the actual rider on the road and say, "Checkpoint, checkpoint 32 is empty right now.

That pandemic thing made those two years go by pretty quick- It, it was weird. Yeah... for some reason, at least for me. You guys were on the fat bike that year. Yeah. And you had the advantage. Did... I know Colin did.

I don't know how the rest of your team did it, but- Checkpoint three I think is the equalizer. Like, what route you take from there. Right. 'Cause you can do the switchbacks, you can run the stairs.

Uh, Co- Collin's even- You can bomb up that hill... yeah Or you can go up over that hill. Colin, that's when that hill, before the amphitheater was there. Yeah.

And that's the funny story from Jake, because Jake makes the turn, Colin just goes straight fucking up the hill. Yeah. And Jake thinks he's got it made, and here he is coming down to make the corner for start and finish.

Yeah. And here's freaking Colin running right at him. Yeah. So yeah, that, that's, that was, you know...

And you know, if, if, if Dave Lunz is listening to this, we would've won the first year if he'd got the bonus checkpoint, and we would've won by more- Uh, well... the second year if he'd got the bonus checkpoint. Wait.

He missed both of the bonuses. I- where's my bike? Yeah. [laughs] Where's my bike? We, we missed the podium a couple of times because, um, one time I, I think we missed one bonus and that cost us. Or no,

I know what it was. We were at team B, where you could share bikes, and if we were team A, and we all us- pretty much use the same bike anyways, if we were team A we would've made it. Ah.

So then we went to team A after that. And then the year after that we caught two flats on the first lap. Oh, I remember that year. And we were done. Yep, yep. We were done before 7:15. Yep, time to party. Yeah.

I mean, we still rode hard and I think we got fourth or fifth place. Yeah. But I mean- That was-... we, we still were out of contention pretty quick.

My, still my favorite is the team that's bike frame broke and they put it on their backpack. Yeah. 'Cause I woke up to start doing my laps that year and some guy goes ripping past me with a bike on his back.

[laughs] I'm like, "What's going on there? That's weird." And that was a team A team? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

Yeah, their frame broke halfway through the race, and they had their backup bike, and they talked to organizers and they said, you know, "This is the case, but our bike is still with us." And they towed it?

And they just put a, they put a backpack on and strapped on this frame and the entire bike and they just rode every lap with this bike on. [laughs] And they killed it.

I mean, yeah, they- And then they still, and they crushed it. [laughs] Classic. And the bike that they were using afterwards wasn't nearly as good as the one that cracked. Yeah. So.

It was an old Schwinn of some sort that just- Yeah, it was... broke in half. Yeah. But he did say it was creaking for years.

[laughs] 'Cause it's a steel bike, so of course it's gonna give you years of time before you're gonna break. Yeah.

So Corey, how, how crazy is your, your day with being the manager of the bonus checkpoints once the event is actually underway? Um, I pretty much go nonstop till about 4:00 or 5:00 before I just cash out.

I'm hosting a bonus, and I think I can say the time it, which if I can remember. Yeah. It's either noon or 1:00. So I'm gonna be able to get about five hours of sleep before I have to get back up and- Right...

kinda get, get some food in me and then figure out what I'm gonna do.

Um, but yeah, generally as the bonus manager, uh, last year I was put up on the, in, on the pedestal for a little bit and had to tell everybody everything and, um, and that was kind of exciting and I got to work out my new bits and my tight five minutes of whatever.

And, [laughs] and then- [laughs]... um, yeah, but then pretty much the race gets going, um, I always watch everybody leave, you know, and then I'm like, "All right, well, it's,

but in five minutes the next, the first bonus starts." Mm-hmm. You know, the first ones are gonna go out at 7:15.

Um, last year they started right at 7:00, but I decided I'm gonna start them at 7:15 and let those run two hours. Um, and then,

so I'll, I'll go to that bonus, the first one, whichever's closest, just make sure everything's going good, and then just bolt over to the next one, and then from there to the next two and just keep going. Yep.

And at some point I've got, you know, friends who I've, who've been doing this for years, or other people who have been doing this for years, I'm like- Just go to this one... yeah, I don't need to go to that one.

They've, they've got it dialed in. You know, like, like Dan on Chambers, he's gonna have something going on. Oh. You know, he's, he's- The UW Dan? Westphalia Dan? Yeah. Yeah. He's hosting a bonus. Um,

[laughs] Well, we, we had this dumb idea one year, we didn't, haven't done it yet, but the 24- We were close... the 24 ends at 7:00 on Saturday- There was-... but the, the Wausau 24 ends at noon on Sunday.

So we're like, "We could race up there and get there by midnight and still do the last 12 hours of it, and have the team do the first 12 hours." Yeah. No. We need a b- That sounds terrible, right?

We need a, we need a bus driver to, so we can sleep in the bus on the way up there or a limo or something. I mean, gener- well, and with, uh, with, with my bonus, um, you know, responsibilities,

by, I'm so stoked because by 6:00, or even, not even, by like 5:00 when I hit that last bonus, like my, my job is done.

Now I can just go kick back and grab like a 12 pack and just sit there and watch riders go at the finish line. [laughs] You know, bands will be playing at the Riverwest Arby's. Um- Yeah. You know? Yeah.

And just, and just kinda hang out and just watch everything, you know, unfold from, from there, so that's pretty cool. And then an hour and a half later you're asleep. Um, by 10:00. The year we won it or took podium, uh,

we were like, "Well, we can't just..."

Normally my buddy Nikolai, who lived up in Duluth at the time, uh, now he's in Mooresville, North Carolina, but he, um, he would stay with, he'd drive down and he'd stay overnight, and then the next day he'd drive home.

And we were like, "Well, we just fucking took the podium. We can't just go back and get a pizza and watch Rat or whatever like we always do." [laughs] 'Cause that's normally what we did. That's what I've done.

We'd just watch, and we'd watch like Happy Gilmore or something and get like shuttle. We were like, "No, we're gonna go to this backyard party and rage."

And like we went there, and we're just like high-fiving everybody in sight and- Yeah, I, I did the exact same thing-... things worked up... when we won. I went home, went to bed. Yeah. I don't know.

We decided we should probably light it up for at least a couple hours and- Yeah... celebrate. We had bombs. I had, uh, that was when I had, uh,

oh, owner R- Wayne from Breakaway ride me down there in his Bullet with a big glass of Bullet. Yeah. And I can remember just spilling it the whole way there. [laughs] I'm like, "I have no reason to be in this right now."

[laughs] But then we won, so it was, you know, it was, it was different. I'm waiting for the cargo bike team to show up. Yeah. That, that hasn't happened yet. That'd be a cool cargo bike team. Yeah.

I rode a cargo bike the first year. My team did. We lost badly. Did you ride all, did you all share a cargo bike? Yeah. Team A. Team A?

I- I'm one of the few people that has a claim to fame that I've taken dead last and first in Team A. Wayne's team has done that, too. That's pretty good. Yeah. Right on. Yeah.
