one of my funnier stories is I know a guy who lives in Leadville, Colorado, and he showed up...

He's from Madison originally, and he showed up at John Muir, and he was prepping his bike and having a smoke and was wearing jean shorts and a shirt.

And three guys in kits showed up, and we're like, "You shouldn't be smoking cigarettes," and gave him all this shit. And he's like, "Tell you what, give you guys a lead- [laughs]... and I'm gonna pass you."

[laughs] And they're like, "You're so full of shit." And he had his bike hung back on his rack and ready to roll when these guys pulled up, and they're like, "How in the hell did you did, do that?"

He's like, "I live at 11,000 feet altitude." Yeah. He's like, "When I come to Wisconsin, I have more oxygen than a human should have." For sure. [laughs] He's like, "I'm on fire." No doubt. And he, he literally, like...

I, I don't know if it's just for our team or for everyone, but- This was not one- Wow... because there's so many people in NICA now, you have to pick, I think f- Yeah... five out of the seven races or something.

I don't remember how it exactly worked, but you can't go to them all because they can't accommodate all these, all these racers at some of these venues. Wow. But, uh- That's cool...

I think up there in Cable, they could accommodate a hell of a lot more than 1,500 people if they really wanted to.

Yeah, obviously we can and, um, you know, I mean, it, it does get complicated with, uh, um, places to stay, but, you know, we have the Birkie and, you know, the Strong and Mountain Bike Festival, so obviously we can accommodate all those people.

But, um, you end up starting to stay further and further away. Um, are you guys camping? Are- Uh, well, here's the deal... are you camping? We're, we're staying at the St- Oh, no, you're at Start Line. Yep.

at some point. What's, what is the course like for the NICA folk? So, you know, it's weird. Um, the, the Birkie, um, they were, um,

you know, they've, they've, they're not unfamiliar with setting up courses and they've, and, and the head of the event, um, department for the Birkie, um, Chrissy Maki, is, had two kids that both were high school NICA racers, so they're very familiar with,

However, I was, I heard through the grapevine that the new NICA leadership showed up and wanted nothing to do with any of their advice about course and said, "Here's how it's gonna be," and just told them- Wow...

"This is what the course is gonna be." That doesn't- So, so I don't really know- Doesn't sound like-... what, what it is... a good plan Um- Wow, that sounds douchey.

[laughs] Well, I mean, how do you- You know, it's kind of funny- Douchey... with the NICA kids, right? Because, like, those kids will race on anything.

You could put them in a parking lot at Target and tell them to go race, and they'll just do it, right? So part of it is about, like, a big part of it is about, like, you know, um, about, uh, family viewing, you know?

So, you know, mom and dad and grandparents and stuff can, can watch the race, so the course needs to be accessible.

Um, but, um, but yeah, they had, the Birkie folks and, and the Birkie folks are building a whole bunch of new really cool mountain bike stuff by the Telemark start area where the race is gonna be. Um,

but however, it sounded to me like they didn't want anything to do with any of their advice and they have their own ideas. So- That's- So I don't know... very weird.

Well, I would, it, is, is there gonna be single track do you think? Or is it mostly gonna be, like, Birkie trail?

I, the, the Birkie just built, and they're building a whole bunch of new sort of trail that's flowy and wider and suitable for, like, a, a NICA race or a WARS race.

And, um, so they've got a bunch of that already built up there. Um, and it doesn't sound like they're utilizing any of it. Hmm. I just rode it today, um, just 'cause I hadn't been out there.

They were still building on it. Um, they still had a mini X out there, and they were still working on it, but I rode a bunch of it, and it was pretty sweet and wide enough for, you know,

you couldn't hold a whole race on, you know, four-foot wide sort of, you know, mountain bike trails. But, um, but you could throw this in and it would be really fun. Um, it was flowy and- That's annoying...

you know, machine built and stuff, so I don't really know what, what the next, what the plan is for the race. Um- Well, we'll find out on Sunday...

the guy that's in charge of that was texting me about the Strong Again Mountain Bike Festival course that they're tweaking, and I did the mapping for that, so he was just texting me about some of that.

saw that you, uh, just published another ride up that way too, the Valhalla Beach Party. A route, yeah, yeah.

Uh, that whole Valhalla Beach Party thing that you helped me scout some of that route, I didn't end up using the far south stuff down by Moqua that you and I rode, uh, 'cause I wanted to shorten it up.

And so yeah, so Josh Rizzo from the North, NXRTH website- N-X-R-T-H...

um, and Eric Weniger from Embark Maple, Eric AKA The Fox, from Embark Maple Sports Nutrition in Brokaw, they both heard me on your last podcast or, or not the last one, the one before that, or a couple before that, where I was talking about it, and then, like, two days later, they're like, "Hey, can we come along?"

So they joined us, joined me. Um, Eric came on his ancient single speed Pugsley, toting a packraft and wearing his long underwear fox suit, and Josh borrowed a fat bike.

He didn't even have a fat bike, but rode it with me and made that video. Maybe you can link it in your show notes. Um- Yeah, I took a, I took a look at it. It's some interesting terrain up there- Yeah...

for sure The video was nice. Yeah, I mean, you rode on a bunch of that stuff, so you know it's steep and soft in sections, you know? Yes, for sure.

So even though the route is only 80 miles, it's not what I would call easy. You know, it's got 4,000 feet of climbing and, uh, um, it, it isn't what I would call easy.

But so Josh published that video, and then, um, a couple...

A week or so after he published that video, I got an email from Logan Watts from bikepacking.com saying he had seen it and wanted me to submit that route to bikepacking.com for their, like, local overnighters sort of filling the map thing.

They're trying to... They've got all kinds of great, you know, tour divide, sort of like all these super epic routes on their website.

But they don't have a ton of more shorter, accessible routes for people to do, you know, in a two-day or three-day trip. So he asked me to, to up- So I, I am publishing that on bikepacking.com. Cool.

So that should be up soon. Right on. Yeah, so that's kinda stoked. Um, yeah, like you wanna include the link to the video or something like that in, uh, your show notes, that'd be great. It is a fun route. It...

As you rode with me, it's steep and soft and sandy in a lot of sections. It's not easy, but it's pretty fun, and the new route is- Thanks... it's designed around fat bikes or plus bikes.

And it's just a whole- So do you think, like a, like a-... bunch of- Do, do you think a 29 plus type bike would be okay on it? Yes- Okay... for sure. For sure. I've ridden it, though, on 2.4s and,

you know, even at like, you know, 10 PSI on a 2.4 inch multi-bike tire on my 29er, there's spots on, you know, that get chewed up by the ATVs and stuff that are pretty soft.

So, but that, that would probably honestly be the fastest bike if this was a race. [laughs] But I, I mean, why not just ride a fat bike and then never have to walk- Right... get off the bike? Right. Yeah.

You can just walk it. Yeah, for sure. Um, and the way we... I designed the route, it's around a whole bunch of really good spots to swim at.

Ideally, people ride this in warm weather and stop and swim at all the little lakes, as well as the couple of really great beaches on the South Shore of Lake Superior that I have on the route.

How, how are the black flies this year? Uh, it's 80 miles total. It's... You know, they were challenging, um, when we rode it, and it was 90 plus degrees- Oof... when we rode it.

So, um, so it was pretty hot, and we, we ran out of water. I mean, we didn't run out because we g- always could filter, but we had to stop at most the lakes and, and cool off and...

So, and black flies, as you know, can fly about as fast as you can bike. Um, so- [laughs] Oddly. Buckers. Yeah, oddly enough. Buckers.

But, but if you wanted to ride this, like, now, like, all the inland lakes are still super swimmable. And the two beaches that I picked on the shore of Lake Superior are shallow beaches, so the water's warmer.

So I think, honestly, this time of year might be a great time of year to ride that, 'cause the bugs are down, the black flies are not nearly as bad- Water's warmer...

the mosquitoes are not bad, and, uh, you can always stop and swim and cool off and get away from the bugs.

Well, I've kinda been trying to follow the weather a little bit up there for the coming weekend, and notice that you've got a lot more temperature swing up there than we do down here in the south. Sure.

Like, it's gonna be like- Yeah, so-... 44 degrees up there at night and 80 in the daytime coming up there this weekend. Whoa. Right. Oh.

this is like the best from now, in my, my opinion, and I love winter too, but for most people, from now until, like, the middle of October is the, is the best time to, um, be up here and ride.

'Cause all the bugs are starting to, you know, die off. And so the black flies are not bad. You can still get some, but not bad even right now, and the mosquitoes are dying down. So
