I rode down on Friday 'cause there was a, [smacks lips] there was a pop-up art show at the Alive and Fine, just to, like, kinda across the street from Rushmore-ish, in that little zone. Right. Right. Actually run by the

lead s- former lead singer of Whips. Nice. I kind of forget about that, but it was all John Carpenter themed, so that was pretty badass. So they had the music going, you know, just, you know, atmospheric.

Sounds like a pretty great event. Yeah, it was cool like that. And then a band, like a three-piece, came in and did, like, th- three or four John Carpenters. Wow.

So yeah. I was driving Friday. Driving, driving, driving. Oh, nice. Driving through some rain. Got to Decorah and it was raining, raining, raining. Oh, no.

Yeah, there wasn't any riding to be had because it was raining- Really?... in Decorah, but that was the overnight stop on the way to Osage. So we g- How far is Osage? Uh, well, Decorah's four hours.

Osage is another hour and a half- Okay... so whatever the mileage is. Right. It's not that far. It's like a s- it's like going up to Schlabowski's house. Five and a half hours if you went to Osage.

So, uh, Friday night we stayed at Spinner's house, which I hadn't been to before. It's the man cave from hell. Oh. He lives in, like, a three bedroom, two bath, [laughs] four-car garage house that- Wow...

he's the only one in there, so there was room for Shannon and Chewy and me and all in separate bedrooms. And, uh, it was very nice. Thank you, Spinner. Also, also- Were they, were they themed? Were they...

[laughs] Good. Uh, part of the Osage trip involved Sealy Dave to some minor extent. [laughs] Uh, we- Right... yeah, we did, I d- w- I was talking about the Decorah portion of the Iowa trip, but, uh, Osage was fun.

I had to [smacks lips] uh, run a bike out that, that Sealy Dave sold to somebody in Iowa. He actually lives in Waverly, which is kinda south of Osage, I think. So it worked out really well- Ah...

because he was at this event. Um, and, uh, was very appreciative that we got the bike to him, and super stoked.

As fa- as a matter of fact, today's show beer when we get to it, he left 'cause I, he wanted to leave before I was done reveling in, in all the glory of riding those trails, so I gave him a combo to my lock, and then he left a four-pack of that beer.

What is it? Oh, nice. [laughs] Whatever this beer is, it's from, uh, Limestone, which is right there in Osage. So the, you know, the, uh- Yeah... they're doing a good job.

We were there in May for the, the clunker, uh, thing, and then, so what's it been? May, June, July, August, September, you know, five months or whatever. They've done a lot more work, a lot more features. Hm.

And it's, it's really turning into kind of like a little destination. And I think the cool thing is it isn't like going up to Copper Harbor where you're doing, like, the mega rides.

This is, this is a kind of river bottom, short, punchy little climbs and a lot of cool twisty stuff. It's not out of anybody's wheelhouse as far as, you know- Capabilities... capabilities and whatnot. Nice. Yeah, so.

Uh- Br- bring your son, bring your daughter, bring your wife. I, you, they can probably all handle this, as long as they don't do the one drop that you don't wanna do. [laughs] Okay.

[laughs] Yeah, for the most part it was, it was awesome. And then, you know,

we were in Decorah Friday night, and, and my good buddy Gunner, who's one of the fastest guys in Decorah, was like, "Well, what do you wanna go over there for to ride? C- you know, Decorah's awesome."

I'm like, "Yeah, but there, those people are over there. Well, you know, we're going for the people, too, not just the riding." [laughs] Yeah. You know, to, to hang out. And there was, like, 30 people at the event.

Uh, it was- Oh... the weather was decent. It was, like, 55, perfect, you know, work into yourself a little bit fall weather. And- Yes... and so- Final season...

I gotta get a picture of this thing that, um, one of the guys that does the trail maintenance has a bob trailer,

and he's rigged up two steel, uh, leaf blowers on it that cross blow out the sides of the bob trailer and make a nice swath through the leaves. It's super awesome. [laughs] That's a great idea.

[laughs] Yeah, it looks it. It's really cool. So anyway, yeah, it's, uh, Osage was a good time. That it, it, it does sound cool.

Yeah, I gotta get a picture because it- And thanks for, thanks for getting that bike there for me. He said he was real happy with it, so. Yeah. Well, I m- mean, he got a heck of a deal. I noticed the handlebar on there.

I go, "Whoa, that's a pretty fancy handlebar on that bike." Yeah.

[laughs] He had an envy and- Yeah, it's a good deal, but it, you know, it's a good de- I, it was a good deal for a, you know, full carbon NX bike with a custom frame bag, for sure.

But, you know, I kinda just wanted the bike to go away and, you know, I mean, it, it's a multi-year old, you know, I mean, I don't remember what even, 2017, is that what that was?

You know, I mean, it's a six-year-old carbon bike, so- I, I thought-... there's no guarantees. I mean- I thought bikes appreciated. That's, that's how I look at them.

[laughs] That's why, that's why none of them- I wish that were the case... [laughs] that's why I never sell any of them. It's like, "Oh, yeah, it's worth more this year than last year." Yeah. I wish that were the case.

Right. But I'm glad he's happy. It, Liz, it was my old bike, and then I got the, you know, Milwaukee, um, Buckshot, um, last winter- [laughs]... thinking that would be Liz's fat bike then.

But honestly, uh, she, she's not a cyclist cyclist, you know? So, like, for her, when winter comes, it's time to ski and snowshoe, and the bike can hang. So- Gotcha... she just wasn't using it enough. Right on. Yeah.

Well, that was only- Yeah... that was, that was- But-... one third of the, uh, transporting back and forth of bike, bikes and bike parts.

So Sealy Dave's Muck Luck, then I had to take out a Necromancer Pugsley frame to Chewy from Lunds, and then I had to pick up a K2 with a Girvin fork on for Lunds from Deke at Oneota River Cycles.

So [laughs] it was a worthwhile trip for picking up- [laughs]... and dropping off all sorts of, uh, cycling gear. W- what does Lunds want with that, with that K2? I mean, it's way too small for him.

Yeah, he mostly wants the fork because it's going on his clunker. It's green. It's not- Oh, okay. Got it. No, it's not green yet. Oh. So I think it's gonna become, my guess is it's gonna become green, though.

Uh, but yeah, I mean, it's a- Right... the thing is in beautiful shape. I, those bikes were m- I saw a picture on his Facebook page. It looked nice. It's, like, a K2 Razorback or something like that.

Right, and they were kinda notorious for breaking the frames, but, uh, the f- the Girvin forks were really nice for the time. And it just, it's gonna look cool on a clunker, I think. You know, it's s- so we'll see. Yeah.

See you, see- I saw somebody else already gooped up the frame, I guess, but I don't know why anybody would really want that frame without the fork, you know? That's possible.

what's going on up with you, Dave? Uh, well, I just, uh, the, the ma- speaking of trails, which you guys were just talking about, I'm building the new trails in Osage.

I wanted to call just to let folks know that the, um, Rock Solid, I think, is, is gonna be done with the, um- The first phase of the trails at Telemark Mountain.

So the green through blacks are supposedly opening this weekend officially. So we will now have a gravity park. Um, and then next year will be phase two and more trail construction.

But I believe right now they have one green up, um, which is a... I mean, it goes all the way up Telemark Mountain, so you know, it's a hike, but it's just gradual switchback climbs the whole way up.

So pretty much anybody can do it, it just, you just take your time. Right. Um, and then there's a blue two-way, and, uh, so up and down, and I think there's a green down and a blue down and a black down, I think.

Um, TJ's like, my buddy TJ who's working on a project has just been swamped trying to get it done by this weekend for the opening, so I- nobody's even seen him.

[laughs] Um, but uh, I think he's been in the woods with Rock Solid in there, you know, night and day. But, um, but so that's kinda big news. Yeah, for sure.

Uh, you know, new big gravity park in Wisconsin, professionally built by Rock Solid, so you know. And they're, they, they do stuff all over the country, if not the world, right? This Rock Solid outfit. They do. They do.

They do, but I, I guess Aaron Rodgers is actually from somewhere around this area, like Stone Lake or Birchwood or some- something.

So he did take a personal interest in, in the project and, um, so it's not just contract work, although I'm sure they do good work no matter where they are.

But he helped design it, as did Josh Bloom, you know, uh, from La Crosse area, who had his own trail construction. He works for Rock Solid now.

He also has that, um, pretty popular, um, podcast, Trail Effect, A-E F-F E-C-T, um, Trail Affect, Effect. Um, and uh, he interviews, you know, trail...

It's all about trail c- communities, um, around the country, so he's, he's super knowledgeable, so he had a hand in the design as well. And then of course TJ and Joe Vadun Coeur as well, um, from, from this side.

So yeah, I'm pretty stoked to go ride it. I've only ridden the green up. I haven't ridden much of anything else. I'm pretty stoked. Um, however, I will...

This weekend I'm out of town at the Red Granite Grinder, the Iron Bowl Red Granite Grinder in Wausau, and it's supposed to rain all weekend it looks like. [laughs] Yeah, it's kinda looking like that down here too. Yep.

Lord. Uh, so you, uh- Yeah, but- So Tou- I know Tour Chequamegon just happened last weekend, right? Yep. And, and- Yeah, we just wrapped that up too, yeah...

And the, was it the weekend before that, uh, our buddy Quinn from down here came up there? I think he did at least part of- Yep...

Uh, he had done the Tour de Chequamegon in the past, and then he went up and did it with a couple buddies, you know, remembering that he had had a good time on it. Yeah, Quinn. Yeah, Quinn. Yep.

Quinn, um, yeah, Quinn, Trent from my, my old neighborhood, and uh, I think Jared had done it before. Um, so yeah, there was a crew of four or five of those guys riding their own route.

Now, Quinn sort of after having ridden the Tour de Chequamegon, he now makes his own routes, and was riding kind of a modified version of the Tour de Chequamegon route, um, to hit a couple of different campgrounds that he prefers.

So that was really cool to see them. Um, our organized ride just finished this last weekend. We had 50 people. Um, we had pretty heavy rain all day on the first day, Friday, which is also the hardest day.

So we had lots of mechanicals that Wheel & Sprocket had to fix. Um, and we had quite a few people bail. Um- Mm. We had f- in, in two days we had 14 out of 50, I think, um, just bail.

Just, get, get sagged back somewhere and- Bailed or finished? Yeah. We, either we took them back to, to cable or... We had one guy who had a, his daughter had a medical emergency, so he had to go.

We had one person who was having his own health emergency, so he and his three friends left. So that was five.

And then we had a, a handful of other people that bailed, I think, just because it, the, the first stage just sort of knocked the wind out of their sails with the cold rain and, and all the climbing, and gravel, and bike damage that is associated [laughs] with riding a long distance in gravel and rain.

Right. Well, you know, what they say- But it was a good trip. It was good though. [laughs] We had fun. Every- everybody that stuck around had a lot of fun. It was- Sure... yeah, it was a nice... So- Oh, yeah...

Um, their, their lead, Emma Elliot, who's just a rock star at Wheel & Sprocket, and is the, essentially, h- heads up all their events, is, um, moving to Montana. Oh, right on. To Bozeman. So, um, so they're losing her.

And, um, they may be losing another staff member, I'm, I'm not sure, another key staff member. And, um, I'm not sure if... You know, part of the reason why, I'm supposed to be retired.

Part of the reason why I keep doing it is just 'cause, you know, I've been working with Emma and, and, um, another guy, um, Ethan, at Wheel & Sprocket on events for, you know, for years and years, so I, I like working with those guys and that's part of the deal.

But if, if the people I know go away, you know, I'm not sure I wanna keep... I don't need to do it for the cash. I do it kind of for fun, you know? So. Yeah. Well, I- I can go ride by m- I can do my own rides.

Uh, speaking of that work- I would like to, it, I, I would like to get a, try that, um, ride from, uh, Grand Marais to Whitefish Point up in the UP, that beach ride. Definitely in for beach rides. Remember that?

A cou- Yeah, we talked about it... a couple of salsa guys, yeah, the salsa thrilly guys that wrote up that story a long time ago or something. Um, it sounds like a really fun ride, though. Yeah.

I'd love to do more beach riding. Hopefully we're gonna get a little bit- That's, that's not the hike bike one where they bring the inflatable kayaks, right? I don't think so.

This is from Limestone Brewing, which is in Osage. It's called Rope Swing IPA. It's, uh, 6.8% ABV. Uh, it gets a, you know, three and three quarter stars at Untapped. I, and I didn't have this when I was there.

I was drinking another one that they make called Devonian IP- that's a hazy IPA, uh, 'cause it was a little less on the boozahol-y side. Uh, how do their beers compare to, uh, Toppling Goliath?

Um, it's hard to compare it to Toppling Goliath. I, it's not this... I just took a swallow. I did too. It's not bad. It's- It's okay... it's sort of- It's brown-y.

I, it, there's two breweries that I have to basically compare everything to, and one's like 100 feet away, Anamorphic, and the other one is, is TG in, in Decorah.

all distances, um, but their long one is 144 miles, and they've tried to make it kind of hard, like, like the, you know, Todd Pokett sort of stuff up, up in, you know, um, the UP.

Those are always fun. And the, uh, the campground right along, it's called, I think it's called Spring Park, it's right along the Little Cedar River, is just beautiful. Uh, it's somewhat rustic- Cool...

if you know what I mean. Yeah. And there's only a, I think there's only eight sites, although you could camp in a lotta different spots in that area. But you're not like 15 feet from the other camper person next to you.

You're like- Like that... uh, 300 feet away. Nice. Each, each of these sites is very- Remote... remote, and it's, all of them are either on the river or right across the little gravel road from it. Sounds great.

So we had a pretty good sized one where there were several, you know, vehicles around, and sort of in a wagon circle campfire sort of a situation, and it worked out well. I, I camped in the van, and it w- it was great.

That, that, you know- Although I need to be a little, I need some kind of like, uh, a bubble level so that I can make sure that it's level, because I kept kinda sliding, like put my head- [laughs]...

I, I, I put my head by the, where the, the, the rear door is to open it up, 'cause it's easy in and easy out, and it's nice to have that thing up and just have a cover.

Even if it's, you know, raining or something, you still got a nice little cover. But, uh, I kept sliding towards the passenger front seat.

So yeah, I ended up putting my, uh, my, my gear bag in, in front of the seat, so- So you wouldn't roll any further? Nah, just kinda squished my feet into it. But it, it was as pretty close to level I thought.

Steve would carry him, and the best part was- Such a good dog... Steve would carry him around in his backpack and have ice packs. So he'd be hot as hell, and Irwin would be like chilling like a villain- [laughs]...
