Um, last year I remember that if they, they did it, and that day was fine, and then the next day- Mm-hmm... it was kind of pretty bad, and then they had school. I'm like- Yeah [laughs]... "What the hell's going on?"

It was a good, it was a good 30 mile an hour east wind coming right off the lake. Yeah. It was windy, man. It was wild. Hey. I got for a snow spin around vibe. Hey, oh that's not... Yeah, man. I, I was trying to think.

I got, we got a... So we, we rode by the lake. We rode on the lake, didn't we? Well, on the sand. In the lake even. Not... Well, somewhat in the water periodically. Oh.

[laughs] Um, yeah, we went and did a Port Washington beach ride Saturday, last Saturday. Yeah. Yeah. And I, I don't know what the deal was, but the sand was really sinky. Really? Yeah.

It was pretty, it was pretty, um, mash on the pedally-ish, you know? Well, it was pretty nice out though, so- Well-... I kind of try to find that, that- Yeah... that soft ridge, that kind of packed spot. Yeah.

And that was much closer to the water, and so- Right... it was, it was. And the, I mean, the waves were pretty good. They were coming in pretty decent. Yeah.

And so the, the, it would leave water, and that would saturate the sand, and then it was kind of sinky. Um, it also was snowing just a little bit. It was a beautiful day. Wow, what a great time. Sorry I missed it.

Uh, what I, what I didn't understand about the day, and I started to think, well, you know, the, the, maybe because the wind was coming off the lake or something, it was very, very nice temperature.

I had, I had dressed perfectly. Everything was working great, and it was very comfortable and, and wonderful. And it was the same temperature as New Year's Day when I was freezing my ass off. Weird, isn't it?

And it was bas- With the winter out sunlight... basically wearing the same clothes. Yeah. Um- Yeah... so I, I don't- New Year's Day was freaking weird. It was weird.

Um, and it- I had to duck behind a, a, uh, rock and peel a, an undergarment layer [laughs] off my pants alone. We thought you were- I was overheating...

Yeah, maybe the stand around. No, it just was something weird that it was definitely noticeably warmer even though it was the exact same temperature. Interesting. Weird. Um, we will have some pictures in the show notes.

Um, I would recommend going up there, and the wind was coming out of the... Uh, what would've been? Like northeast, and it was really pushing the water up too.

So if it was coming out of the west, it would push it offshore a little more, and we would have even more beach to ride on. So we will go check that out probably, I don't know, next weekend again, maybe.

And right, it's still, like, 34 degrees outside right now, so it's just on that, that fringe, but the wind is blowing off the lake, which is still, I think it's a... it's just below 40.

It's, it's really pretty warm for this time of year, so the wind coming off the lake is, is turning it to more, more moisture than, than fluffy. Ah. But, uh, so we have, you know,

five inches of white fluffy snow, so I mean, it looks like a winter wonderland. Um, and because we have had so, you know, little snow, um, you can ride basically anywhere. Y- you know, the... I don't...

I did pull the drag around our neighborhood trails, but, um, I... that was because I thought we were gonna get some more snow and then that missed us.

Um, uh, so basically, like all the CAMBA trails and stuff like that, e- everything's open. I don't think they're really grooming anything, but you can ride everything, and it's pretty.

So if anybody's thinking about, um... And we've actually been skiing a little bit too. There's just enough snow to ski on.

So, um, so if people have been thinking of holding off on coming up north 'cause we haven't had any snow, I just thought I'd call in and let folks know that winter's finally here, um, and it looks like it's gonna stick around for a while.

We don't have a ton of snow, but it's pretty. It looks like you want it to look, you know? Right on. So i- it's been cold enough that the ground is frozen even before the snow? It has been warm up here as well.

winter warmth unexpectedly, um, and no snow, I was... but enough cold that lakes were freezing, I had this idea of trying to, like, circumnavigate a whole bunch of lakes around here.

Um, and so I've been trying, um, but like, I was just on Lake Olin, which is a big lake just north of Cable. I don't... I think it's like 1,300 acres or something like that. Um,

and I got most of the way, I got like three quarters of the way around it and then suddenly... And a lot of it is private and wealthy property owners, so they leave their piers in.

They have these big giant wooden piers that they leave in all winter long, and a lot of them have aerators underneath them, so you have to watch- Mm... for open water. That is, that is a rich person [laughs]. Yeah.

So you have to watch for open water by their piers. Even if, you know, there's five inches of ice elsewhere, you gotta be careful.

So I was looking ahead, I was almost back, um, and it looked like there was open water ahead.

I thought it was by somebody's pier, and then the ice I was riding on went from, you know, four or five inches to instantly one inch thick. Mm. And then I could see as I...

A- and it was cracking under my tires as I was riding. Um, and then I, w- in my... I was freaking out a little bit [laughs] 'cause I was in deep water, 'cause I'd moved- Little bit?... to the...

I'd moved to the center of the, closer to the center of the lake because I thought the open water ahead was because of that pier, so I was moving out to deeper water and suddenly I'm on one inch of ice.

And, um, I was able to safely make a gradual U-turn and get back to thick ice, but... So my point is, you asked about frozen. Things are frozen, but you know, the lakes are not. You know, ice fishermen are not

consistent. You gotta be careful everywhere. A lot of the lakes, like Lake Nabucoagon would normally have a snowmobile trail flagged all the way across it already. They haven't done any of that.

So we're still in a weird, you know, El Niño year. But it looks pretty... You can ride all the trails. So essentially we have 130 miles of, of winter, you know, fat bike trails. Um- Right on... and, uh, so it's pretty...

Uh, people, if they're looking for winter fun and their fat bikes and getting tired of racing fat bikes in the warm, you know, green grass and stuff like that, like down south, um, I encourage people to come on up 'cause it's super pretty and you can ride basically everywhere.

Um, the lakes are a little iffy. I had a planned with a friend of mine, Shane, from the Wausau area, Shane Hits, to go do a, um, overnight bike packing trip on the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage.

They have like 66 campsites on the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage. I've mapped them all in Ride with GPS.

And so we were gonna just sort of ride around the flowage and I'd, I made a sled to pull behind my fat bike with like half inch PVC and some carabiners, you know, cheapo version of a, of a real sled s- a pulk.

A cheapo homemade ver- you know, with a homemade... It's like my daughter used to go down a hill on this sled, so [laughs] it's not a- [laughs]... you know, it, it's not an e- expedition sled, but it works.

Um, so we were gonna pull like a ice fishing auger and just check out a bunch of those campsites and camp and eat at Donner's Bay Resort and, and do some ice fishing and hang out.

And then I went on that Lake Owen trip and nearly went in the water, and I don't know the flowage very well, so I said let's wait until [laughs] there's more consistently thick ice. Very good.

I've done a lot of research on ice and, and, um, like if you pulled a chunk of ice, they always say like four to five inches is good for humans walking on ice. That's when you can go out and start ice fishing.

Don't drive your ATV or your truck out there or pull a big, you know, uh, structure or something. But you can go out there safely on four or five inches of ice.

But if you were to take a sh- a, a bar of ice, say three feet long, that was five inches thick and s- put it between two like cinder blocks and try to stand on it, it would totally break.

It would not support your weight. Right. So what... The reason why an inch of ice will support me on a fat bike, just barely, as I said, it, it was cracking under my wheels and I was riding ahead of the cracks.

Um, but the r- reason why it will is because of the inel- inelasticity of the water below it. So the ice floats on top of that water. That water doesn't compress. So as long as you don't flex the ice enough to break it,

and like a fat bike, a, a five-inch fat bike tire has more surface area than most people's feet. Right. Absolutely. Right. Yeah. Right? Right. Yeah. It, it does.

But as I said, it was cracking, but I believe it was cracking because there was enough flex that the ice itself is crystalline structure, right? It won't It flexes and then it cracks.

So, um, the water wasn't, was allowing it to flex enough to flow around it that my weight was starting to crack it. So I had to keep riding to stay ahead of the cracks. [laughs] But I made it over.

I, I, I was now freaked out officially, and didn't wanna try to get back to the other side of the lake.

I'd ridden all the way up the other side of the lake and it was fine, but I didn't wanna ride across the middle of the lake and test, [laughs] test my theory.

So I exited via private property and, and rode home on the road. Um, but, uh, yeah, it, it was weird 'cause, like, it just was like a shelf.

All of a sudden, when I got back on it, I looked, I was looking down then suddenly and I was like, I could see, like, there was just this big line where it went from five inches to one inch instantly for some reason.
