That was the funny part because, um, on Wednesday night we were hanging out with people from the area, and they own the catamaran that we were on, and da-da-da.

I'm just like invariably I'm gonna stop there or stop in front of it or whatever. And so it like, "Hey, where are you guys going?" And they'd run into friends [laughs] along the way as we're walking. Cabo Wabo, oh.

I was frantic mentally and, like, th- you know, all over the place, you know, water insecurity and just, like, thinking about, like, "What the hell is the conversion f- I don't get, I don't understand. What? 2,000 pesos?

It was, there was, it was wet. It's been a very, it's been very damp up here. Um, the fat biking season is about, has been about a week long so far. Mm.

There hasn't been really enough of a base layer and, and nothing to... Even tonight, it's actually raining. It's, it's... And I imagine you're, you guys probably have almost identical weather. Yep, it's raining.

It's been, it's been damp and crummy. Yeah, we had a, we had a cold snap there for about a week. Yeah. And now it's in the- Yep... you know, high- It was-... high 30s again, so yeah... it was freaking cold.

Blizzard, then a freeze. It was significant cold. Yeah. Oh, it was here, too. Yeah. Yeah, there was a real deep... And that's, it's hard to get used to that. It's not bad if you've had a month of it.

So when I get ready to leave in the morning to commute to work, I have to have about three different changes of clothes laying on the floor, and then I have to basically pick and choose depending on how, how bad is it.

You don't wanna be t- you don't wanna sweat on the way in, and you also don't wanna be too cold. Right. So you gotta be, you gotta...

It's a, it's a real fine balancing act, 'cause you could go in the morning w- you know, two layers, uh, and by the time you come home in the evening, you're carrying most of it in the bag on your back, so. Mm-hmm. Yeah.

Yep. Yeah, right on. So, uh, uh, do you get lake-effect snow there normally, or are you not in a spot that's affected by that, uh, kind of meteorological phenomenon? Uh, not, not terribly.

Like, Lake Ontario, there is a little bit of that sometimes depending on how, which way the wind's blowing. And, and if Buffalo has something coming that way, we can sometimes get that.

But where we are here, it's kinda weird. We're in... I don't know if we're in a dip or we're high. I don't know which, but we... It seems to go all the way around the city that I'm in here.

It, it doesn't seem to really affect us quite as badly. If you go north or south, they get it quite a bit- Hmm... quite a bit more. And so here, it's, we're, it's, you know, it's pretty easy. It's not, there's not a...

There's a lot of complaining going on, because I think people are, um, used to having bare roads to drive on and, and clear sidewalks to walk on.

But, um, I mean, when we hear that Buffalo gets five feet and they're having a, you know, they're going down to the stadium- [laughs]... they're, everybody's having a good...

Seems like they're having a great time in it, and up here it's [laughs] seems to be people get upset with a little tiny bit of skiff of snow even though they, we live in Canada- Yeah... and supposedly it's- Yeah...

So I, so, uh, so I tried today after our cold snap to do my final, like I... Tom Schuler and I went over to, uh, Lake Owen to try to circumnavigate the lake, and I sunk in up to my, my axles in slush. Ooh. Hmm.

Even with that cold weather, I don't know, there's some weird overflow thing with the lakes and stuff, so if you're coming up here to ride lakes, be careful 'cause you don't know what's under that snow anymore.

Um, and even though we had some very cold temps, the lakes are not safe. So, um, so I wanted to give that report, 'cause I know I've been talking a, a lot about lake riding.

I didn't want anybody to, "Yeah, I, I'm gonna go do what Dave did," and I don't want anybody falling through. [laughs] Good call.

Um, otherwise though, um, we essentially have, um, we essentially have 130 miles of, of fat bike trails, because you can basically ride anywhere.

Um, nobody's been grooming anymore since, uh, we haven't been getting more snow.

Everything's ridden in really well, so all the regular summer mountain bike trails are open, and the winter mountain bike trails are also, the winter fat bike trails, some of them like the ones in Seely, are only open in the winter.

And that, they just had the Seely Big Fat race last weekend, and they groomed them in prep for that. So those...

I just rode those trails today after I got sort of, like, my hopes and dreams of, of riding around Lake Owen were dashed.

[laughs] I was already arrived, so I came home and just rode, rode my neighborhood trails, and those are, are in great condition. Um, they're actually...

Uh, it's a little grassy, um, from all the bike racers on, on very thin snow, but, um, perfectly rideable, lots of fun. The forest is still a winter wonderland, so it looks pretty. And, uh, don't, uh... Anybody that...

I know you guys [laughs] probably have more snow than we do, though. [laughs] Wow. Yeah, we got about 14 inches or so total- Total... over the last- Yeah... kind of week or whatever. It'll be down to three tomorrow.

Yeah, but it's at, now it's in the high 30s, so it's going away real fast. Ah. Well, it's gonna... It's warming up up here. Um, we had a cold snap. It's warming up. Um, it was 28 degrees today.

It's gonna get into the 30s. I, it looked, uh, like our weather's kinda mirroring yours temperature-wise. So our snow probably won't last real long either, but, um, it's pretty right now.

The, the one other thing I wanted to say, um, related to something, uh, you guys mentioned a while back, somebody said nobody's making carbon fat bikes anymore, and I think Trek still has their Farley 9.6 carbon on their website.

Hmm. Yeah, that was one of my th- one of my theories about the WTB-...

uh, tire that's coming out in 27.5, and, uh, w- uh, the original report was that that was the tire size, and then I think Gomez got a s- a set at fatbike.com and they, they have a 26 check mark box on the sleeve, but I haven't heard of a 26-inch version being available anywhere.

So, uh, I, I'm- Uh... I'm thinking they're doing an OE for Trek probably, but who knows? Right. Yeah, I don't know who's gonna buy those tires when you can buy Dillinger's for 75 bucks.

Yeah, they're running- If you can find them... they're out, they're out of stock at, at the distributor. So if you want that deal, you gotta get them through, uh, whatever, uh, online retailer you can find.

I think there is other place, like, other manufacturers are making carbon fat bikes. I think Salsa still makes their Barry. Yeah, I'm sure. Um- So does Bariallas, I believe. [coughs] But, uh- Yeah...

I think, I think I had just seen like that week, like three or four, uh, manufacturers that are doing titanium. I'm like, "What? Is titanium the new carbon kind of thing?" But, uh, you know, I, I d- I think- Oh, yeah...

personally, unless you're racing, I don't see a carbon fat bike as being a thing anybody should have. Titanium's- No... much better material. Yeah. Can, can I digress for a second?

Well, yeah, I think, I think definitely the steel or titanium would, would make more sense just because the conditions, you know- Ab- absolutely... with...

Like, I know that mine's an aluminum bike, and it's, it suffers greatly in the winter with the... if you're commuting in the salt. It, it doesn't take long for it to start to show a lot of wear and a lot of spots.

And so the aluminum's very lightweight, and it doesn't, doesn't do well in, in certain conditions. So it's, you know, maybe the steel would be a, a tad more, um, you know, durable. Yeah.

What is your- But- What is your current aluminum, uh, fat bike? He's got that- It's just the... It's a, it's an old, it's an old bike now. It's a 2019 frame of Bigfoot frame, the Norco Bigfoot frame.

So it's- Norco, very nice... and everything else on it is just basically... Yeah, so I mean, it's done well. It's done... It's definitely outlived the first version, the 2015 that I had. It's definitely outlived that.

But, um, I'm always kind of hesitant because of what happened to the... The first frame, uh, fractured just at the, at the chainstay and right at the weld.

And so I'm, I was always k- I, I was always kind of a little bit nervous after that, that the bikes would start... like, something would fail. 'Cause I've never had a bike fail before. I never had a frame fail before.

But Norco was very good about, um, replacing the frame, so I, I, I gotta give them credit for that. They were pretty quick on the ball with that. And so I- Nice... you know, I was very happy with the replacement.

But, um, yeah, a little nervous that it may happen again just because it's their mass produced kind of thing, so, um- Yeah. Well, look-... but I have been looking at...

I've been kind of looking around and maybe f- in, you know, a couple years when this one finally dies, that, you know, something a little more modern. I mean, the thing's changed quite a bit from 2019 even to now, so.

Oh, yeah. Yeah, it looks like they're still making the Bigfoot, or at least it's still on their website, so that's, uh, good news. They... Yeah, they are. They, they got rid of the Sasquatches.

I thought it could've been really cool because the Sasquatch was always the one that they put the suspension fork on and stuff, but they started to steepen the head tube again.

And I'm, you know, as, as we're talking about the weather, the weather being more warm than it is cold, like, and we're getting shorter and shorter winters, um, I r- I really do think that the fat bikes...

I ride mine all year round, and I have no problem whatsoever with it. I know a lot of people stick them away, and they, they bring them out exclusively for what they call whatever they determine is winter- Mm-hmm...

is at this point. But, um, you know, if they start to slacken the head tube... But Rocky Mountain's done a fantastic job. Their bike looks amazing. We...

Actually, one of the guys I ride with just got one, and it looks... It's nice and slack, and it's- You know, all, all modern.

It's got the tall speed rear end and, you know, it, it looks really cool and I think you could use that for just about everything almost, so. Yeah, it looks like, uh, s- I know Norco did start to steepen them up again.

They started slackening out with the 2019 was somewhat slacker. Uh-huh. And now they've done, gone back to the 69 degree head tube again, so. Yeah.

That's an interesting thing because as, as conditions get softer, if that's what people are using, a steeper head tube actually works better.

Um, especially when you're running really low tire pressure because it change- Mm...

it changes the trail of the fork so much when you get that really low tire pressure that you really kinda need it because it kinda slacks it out- Yep... as you are dropping your pressure down- Mm-hmm...

to three or four pounds. Um, so, you know, if you're, if it's, if it's purely for, you know, soft conditions, then the steeper thing is a good thing. But I agree with you.

And all around, when you don't sacrifice that much, and it certainly makes it more of a four-season bike. Right. Totally worth it.

Uh, just noticed also- Yeah, I mean, I've taken mine on flight, I've taken mine on bike packing expeditions with the guys that I ride with. They've rode various different bikes.

They've gone from, um, drop bar gravel bikes, and there was, uh, one, uh, one guy rode a Surly mountain bike and, and it, it doesn't, doesn't seem to be any less. You know what I mean?

They all seem to perform equally good, just different. You know what I mean? Sure. So there's no, there's no one bike that's better than the others for that and particular applications, so. Yeah. Yeah.

It, and, and I just noticed we were talking about 27.5 tires from WTB. All of, uh, Norco's bikes are also 27.5 right now, but they're using Vee tires- Mm-hmm... on the current batch.

I don't know what they had on yours, but I'll tell you what. You wanna make a bike better, get rid of Vee tires- Yeah, immediately remove-... and put on those WTB's, I'm sure [laughs]... Vee tires.

Any, any, any 27.5, any, any brand is probably better than Vee tires. I just, I hate them. I hate to bash them, but boy. What's your, what's a, what's a criticism... I know the Vee tires.

I have had them and I've, I haven't r- you know, I do, I have bought 45Nrth tires as well just to, to make it a little bit better, a little bit lighter and nicer tire.

But they, um, I mean, the Vee rubber themselves, is, is the criticism, what's your criticism of the Vee rubber itself? I'm not saying it's a bad or a good tire.

I- I just, at the speed that I'm riding in the w- in the winter, I don't notice it much of a, you know, at advantage to either of the tires when the pressure- Oh... is low.

But what, what do you see as the negative on those tires? As, as someone who's an absolute lightweight rider and really just basically what we would call a Nancy around here, I can barely power Vee ru- [laughs]...

Vee dub tires. Yeah. And I bought a pair of the Toboggans, the CTS Toboggans, and it was- CST? CST, thank you Yep. And it was literally from the first, like, mile was a night and day better tire.

I mean, it was, it was astrono- I can, I don't know what it is. My buddy Sam yelled at me saying I'm just not strong enough, which is probably true. Um, but they just, they, the,

the Toboggans rolled so much better that I never looked back. Yeah, I, I noticed it.

We, uh, got a bunch of tires at, to fatbike.com in the old days to test and I'd been riding 45Nrth, and I put on some Vee tires and rode with the normal group of guys that I always ride with, and I was very much struggling to keep up, just around town doing some- Exactly...

you know, urban bashing. And, uh, I was two gears, uh, lower than I normally would be just to make the bike go. So they, at least for me, they didn't roll well.

One thing I will give them, though, is if you happen to have an e-bike, they're very durable. Um, it's a, it's a different compound- Yeah... that, that lasts a long time. They're a little heavier.

It was a little chilly to start, but I was comfortable by the time we hit the Reservoir Park. Yep.
