And, uh, they skipped the, uh, PWC one year, and then the next year I was at Decorah and I found the ax hiding in a corner of a bar all dusty and looking lonely.

Um, so I decided to steal it and bring it home to Chuck Chad Wilson Willy, the real champion. [laughs] And, um, I awarded it to him. Ah, that's how that gets done, huh? Ah. [laughs] I guess that's a legit way- Yeah...

to, to, uh, award the, uh, ax, and it's been- That's right. I, I, I, I, I saw it in Justice and I ride it that day, uh, 'cause that's what I do. Uh-huh. Um,

uh, I was talking to Spinner about it this weekend at Shell Track, uh, one of the greatest fat bike races in the world. Yeah. One of the, uh, longest running, uh, in the state. In Wisconsin. Uh- In Manitowoc. Yeah.

In Manitowoc. [laughs] It's the longest running fat bike race at Shell Track. I'm still that sorry. [laughs] Um, um, but Spinner said that, um,

well, originally the, uh, the rule was that you had to actually do the race and then do the after event to win, and O'Gara didn't do the race, but he won the after event.

So Chuck did the race and the after event and got second, so I determined that Chuck was the real champion. Yeah. You're, you're good at that type of thing. I like rationalization. Yeah, great. Yep.

[laughs] So it, it's been- I can make a damn argument for any of this. [laughs] I know it's been languishing around Milwaukee now for a couple of years, and it actually went up to Shell Track.

I gave it to Spinner and then he gave it back and said, "Maybe we should award that thing down at Fatter by the Lake and do a proper Pugsley World Championship event down there at, uh, the event coming up this, uh- Oh...

third, fourth, and fifth of Janu-mary." Yeah. Well, if that's gonna be an overnight event, that would be proper, 'cause it's, y'all, it's gotta be an overnight event, first of all. Proper. [laughs] Yeah, for sure. Yeah.

Otherwise, we have to go back to Decorah. That was the other idea. Do we go back to Decorah and actually get another event going there? Well, the other thing Spinner said-

Well, Chad thought that, you know, the winner has to plan the next event, and Spinner's like, "Oh yeah, that's a great idea." We don't have to do anything. [laughs] You know?

I think this idea has legs, doing it down at the Satter by the Lake event. There's gonna be plenty of people down there, and plenty of the right kind of people too. Right. So we'll see what we can put together for that.

Um- Well, you made me ride fast for my fat bike run tonight just to get back in time. [laughs] Yeah, yeah. Excellent. Yeah, cool. So you guys got... You're in, are you in Saint Germain proper?

Or, or what city are you in? All right. I am, I personally reside between Eagle River and Saint Germain, um, but, uh, I'm part of a club based out of the Minocqua area called Lambo. Okay.

And we, we groom a couple trails up here for fat biking and do several fat or, uh, several fat bike oriented events every winter. Right on.

And the one, the one we're gonna talk about mostly tonight, the Fatathlon, that one will take place in Saint Germain, but it's between Eagle River and Saint Germain. It's where the trail's located. Okay.

Yeah, you said you got a ton of snow up there already, so this sounds like it's gonna be a- Well-... snowy event. Well, this winter started off where last winter ended.

Uh, we've got over two feet on the level already up here, and, uh, our, our grooming volunteers in our club have been busy for the last two weeks, and things have been really good this week though. Riding's been great.

Awesome. So, uh, tell us about the Fatathlon, the event that's coming up the m- the soonest, and then maybe we can just kinda get a quick rundown of what's happening later in the season.

Well, actually, um, if I can give a little plug to our club too, on, uh, December 26th at 6:00 at our zip line trails just south of Minocqua, we have, uh, Fat Bikes by Candlelight, which is a- Free demo event.

A big bonfire, hot chocolate, et cetera. Um, that's gonna be... That's actually our most current event that Lambeau is putting on. That's December 26. But the Fatathlon will also be demo, demos.

That takes place on January 4th, and that's, um, the biggest fundraiser for, uh, the Shannon Lake Trail System that we groom for fat biking, and that offsets all our grooming expenses for the year. All right.

That, that event will have a cross-country race, which is a combination of cornhole toss- Cornhole... for time bonuses. Oh, yeah, cornhole. [laughs] We- we're, we're Wisconsinites. [laughs] We eat cornhole beer and pep.

[laughs] Yeah, it's a great combination. You gotta do it all together. When, when you say demo, what, uh- It's, it's a lot of fun... when you say demo, what are you demoing? What kind of bikes?

I mean, obviously fat bikes, but what kind? Um, we... Well, we have several dealers coming.

We have, uh, Chequamegon Adventure Company out of Minocqua, uh, Bikes & Boards out of Rhinelander, and there's a couple more that haven't committed yet, but, uh, we have a full spectrum of manufacturers there.

There's fat bikes there for people to try for free. That part of the event will run from 11:00 AM till 4:00 in the afternoon.

But the race itself, registration's gonna be only on site from 8:00 to 9:30, with the race rolling at 10:00. Um, the, the format...

To, to, to finish your question about the format, though, um, before a racer goes out on the course, they're gonna be required to throw 10 beanbags, and with each hole that they make, they can win one minute time bonus.

When they... As soon as they cross the finish line after doing the 15K fat bike race, they can throw 10 more and win more time bonuses. Right on.

Um, it actually did, it actually did shuffle the results a little bit last year. [clears throat] Bumped my son from first to second in his class. Nice.

And I think there was one other class where, uh, second got relegated to third, so I mean, it was pretty neat. So, so first to cross the line doesn't necessarily win the prize. It, it...

You have to have the skill at the cornholing as well. Well, you know what?

I think it's a good way to level the playing field between some of the people that might be a little faster versus some of the ones that might be more skilled at s- you know, throwing cornhole. Yep. I dig it.

And, uh, it's- Sounds like a good plan... it, it's a lot of fun. It really is. It's g- I, I just stole the idea from the, uh, the sport of biathlon, and it's...

Um, the Lambeau riders have a Facebook page and also an internet page, and we have an event, um,

And then what do you have coming up later in the season?

Um, in the later part of the season, I, I don't have the exact date off the top of my head, but, uh, Lambeau also puts together a race called the Rip, Zip and Sip, which is a fat bike race

on the, uh, zip line trails south of Minocqua.

And, uh, we just recently expanded that trail system, uh, had a couple miles of, uh, machine-built trail put in, and we're grooming that for fat biking as well, berms, features, et cetera. And we're...

We haven't exactly determined yet the length of the race. We're still working out that course, but, uh, there'll be a shorter race and a longer race at that event, though. Nice. Yeah, I think, uh, grooming- Yeah...

some of the machine-built trails is really cool. I was in Stevens Point this past weekend and went to, uh, Standing Rock, where they have some... You know, they're a little bit lighter on the...

They're not super aggressive, but they were groomed, and they were fun. And I know they don't have as much snow as you, but it was still pretty sweet to be on some nice hard pack,

uh, trail with features and fun and berms, and it was, it was really groovy. It... We have a group ride at the zip trails tomorrow night at 6:30 south of Minocqua too, and the conditions right now are just...

They're excellent. And, uh, it's gonna get warm this weekend, which the afternoon riding will be horrible more than likely because s- I think it's just gonna take a toll on the trails.

Morning riding this weekend would probably be best, but if you're looking to see what the zip is all about, tomorrow night's gonna be a really good opportunity to see how it is when it's really excellent.

Oh, yeah. Yeah, it's, uh... You know, there's a lot to do up here. I mean, a, a person could make a weekend of riding up here just within a h- within a half hour of Minocqua proper, you have five or six groomed trails.

Couple down in Rhinelander. You have Windman North up in Mattawi Waters.

Uh, actually, Lambeau does groom another trail called Schleck Lake, but that's groomed for cross-country skiing, but fat bikes are also allowed in the skate lane. Hmm. And that's right across the street from the zip.

So we actually have three trails we groom for fat biking. Awesome. It's- That's pretty cool. Right on, Mike... yeah. And, and the Schleck, the Schleck Lake conditions are also on the Lambeau page too.

Like, "I'm pretty sure I forgot to ride my bike yesterday." [laughs] And she's like, "Big deal." Right. I did start pre this year. I did start riding, like, on the 26th just to give myself a little leeway.

It gives you some, that gives you some cushion days. So- Right... I still got two years left, so- In theory... it's a three-year- Well, and that, that's what I think... three years commitment.

I mean, I, I lo- I love the idea that you have on this, and I just, I can't... At times, where I'm just like, I just can't keep count, but I'm normally riding every day- Yeah... by default no matter what.

I mean, that's why the, the- So I can count on, like, to-... bike 100 days I think is a great idea for people that want to make that commitment. Yeah.

But I think us, all three of us for that matter, pretty much ride 100 days in a row every year of our lives. Right. You know? I mean, it's like, like, every year I can count on two hands how many times I missed. Right.

You know? And yeah, I mean, even when like, oh, I feel like, oh, well, whatever. Yeah, you know, provided I don't bust my junk. It's three blocks away. I can ride my bike. I don't have to drive.

Yeah, I have a, I have a- [laughs] Anyone that asks me to walk somewhere, I tell them it's a two block rule. [laughs] If I have to walk more than two blocks, I'm getting on a bike.

Yeah, so I don't want the, uh, shock- And that's why I have a plethora of bikes... I don't want the shock impact on my joints. You know, I have a plethora of bikes for a reason. Come on now.

I wanna, I wanna use these damn bikes. Molly makes me walk to bowling sometimes. Hell no. I'm like, that's the freaking Polish Falcon. Uh-uh. That's a long walk for me. That's a bike ride. That's a great bike ride. Yes.
