It w- Saturday was nice. Saturday was fine, but towards the end, by, by second lap, it was just gone. Did you get out there kind of to set it up the day before? Yeah, they set it up nice. Yeah. They had it all groomed.

Nice. Yeah, I had to take a trip out to Madison to deliver a Sendero Chumba Frame to JP, and he happened to be running an event at Norsk Golf Club or something in- Yeah... in Mount Horeb. Not to mention Grumpy Troll.

Yeah, Grumpy Troll was there. Oh, yeah. So good. Oh, and there's like a- So good... right across the street from there, there's a hole in the wall- Yep... bar diner awesomeness. I can't remember the name of it.

We should go there more often, 'cause that's, that's some nice riding out there. Yep.

Well, if they would keep this course that they had for that race going, which I don't think they can, I think it was a one-time thing, but it was like a two-and-a-half-mile course on this g- golf course, fairly open golf course, but kind of hilly.

And it was really, really nice. Nice. They'd been grooming it with snowmobiles, and then they ran a snow dog over it the, I think the morning of the event maybe.

But it was actually s- some of the best packed trails I've ridden in a while, and I bet the next day [laughs] wh- well, you had to s- you had to slip and slide. [laughs] So I would imagine it, it, uh- Glazed up and-...

it went away pretty quickly and then... Now, is that close to the Blackhawk trails? 'Cause that's where- It is on the west side of Ma- it's west of Madison in Mount Horeb, which is, like, 15 miles west of Madison.

Blackhawk I think is more northwest from where... You take 151 to get to Mount Horrible. Yeah, I asked, uh... Oh, this is gonna- That's where the next huge ass is this Saturday... so many trolls...

and I asked JP if he was gonna be there. He said the trails are awesome, but I think him and Spinner are heading- Oh, at Bl- yeah, right at Blackhawk. Yeah.

Yeah, that's a, that's a ski hill that has, um, trails too, and normally I think you have to have a pass to ride there.

But for some, somehow they're getting a deal where if you enter the race, you get a pass for the rest of the year. Rest of the year, yep. So yeah, that sounds cool.

Yeah, I was asking JP if he was gonna be hanging out there, but I guess him and Spinner are heading up north. Are you doing the race? Yep. Right on. Does, does JPR actually ever work?

uh, down in Iowa and he are planning on doing the Tour Divide, and they, it's like- Oh, that's a great bike for that... he's like, "20, 28 days, a- 110 miles a day."

I'm like, "Oh, well, then we might extend that, though, if it's taking you a little longer so, you know, plenty of time to go out there and ride the Great Divide too." That's gonna be awesome, though.

We got somebody to track and watch. Yeah. Yeah. Absolutely. Yeah, I don't think he's... I don't know that they're doing the race. I think they're just riding the trail, but I'm not positive. Oh.

like, a couple years ago, the one picture I saw was a dude leaning on his bike, and you're kind of like, "What's he doing?" And then you see the bear [laughs] in the, in the distance.

[laughs] It's like, oh, yeah, I wouldn't be riding either. [laughs] It's like he's waiting for the bear to leave. I'm like, wow, I don't wanna ride bikes where I get to a situation where I could get killed by a bear.

There were a couple coyotes on the oak leaf- Ah... rolling north by, uh, Thirsty Fox, and I was like, "Okay, you can just go away now." Yeah. "Come on, aren't you... No, this is your turf, brother." Yeah. Oh, okay.

they had a great stuffed animal over on, uh-... up north by the river, stuck in the tree, of a lion. Oh, nice. [laughs] So, like, you could always [laughs] like go, "Yeah, there's a walking lion, brother." Yeah.

[laughs] So, uh, one of the things I thought interesting about JP's and, uh, his buddy is, uh, Vaughn, um, they're doing it single speed also. So- [laughs] I was thinking what I would ride- So cool... on the trail.

Besides, I have the- the- the Chumba Stella ti, which I probably would use, but- Stella... I took that, uh, old Tatanka out with the Rohloff on it. Yeah, you- I thought how nice-... Rohloff...

the Rohloff would be on [laughs] the trail. Yeah, exactly. 'Cause I- I could use all the gears I can get. Yeah. What's the el- That's nuts, man. The elevation's gotta be crazy out there. Yeah, it is.

It's- Yeah, I- I haven't, you know, ridden the route, so I- I don't... But yeah, it gets over 10,000 feet in some spots, I believe. Yikes. Us flatlanders, man. [laughs] Yeah, you're- you're sucking a lot of wind.

Having lived out there for a little while, and watching people try to acclimate without spending a couple of days in, like, Denver. Oh, right, right, right.

They get up to the mountains and they're suddenly throwing up and stuff. It's like, "Well, have you had any water?" "Well, no." [laughs] Yeah, but- "I had a lot of beer."

Well, yeah, but- Between Denver and Boulder- Beer- beers are better... it was like, what am I doing to myself? And I'm not doing anything active. I lived at- I'm just riding. I lived at 9,500 feet. I'm just riding along.

And you sleep like a baby when you're not taking in that much ox- that much oxygen. After about a week, you were used to it, but it was like, wow, you are, like, literally 9,000 feet. [laughs] You know?

It's 50 degrees out and it feels like the middle of summer in Wisconsin. [laughs] It is gorgeous, though. Yeah, it is. Then the sun goes to bed. It's beautiful. The snow comes out- And then-...

and it's only about 24 degrees. Right. Right after the happy hour, it's like, what happened? Yep. Wait a minute. [laughs] 6:00 and the temperature's dropped 45 degrees. Exactly.

[laughs] So, Shannon, tell us a little bit about your, uh, fat bike adventures this winter. What have you d- Have you done all the Huge Ass races? So far I've done all the Huge Ass races. Nice.

Uh, in fact, I plan on doing Black Hawk, which is the fifth race, and then Nokosa's after that, and I'll be there for that. That's the finale. Right on. It's also the same date as Sweaty Yeti, so.

Lots of, uh, competing events. There's, uh, go over 'em a little later, but in- in Wisconsin, you've got four or five every weekend to pick from, for sure. And two years ago it was like- Nothing... nothing, yeah. Right.

You just had to go find your own adventure back in those days. Yeah. What's happening to Alpine Sunday? There's a... I know we're gonna go over this later, but I'm gonna bring it up now.

That's, uh- Well, Shannon probably knows as much or more about that than I do... the downhill? Uh, yeah, Smoge and, uh, Jameson are putting on, like, a downhill type, uh, fat bike enduro or wh- what do you call it?

Yeah, I ran across that today. Yeah. It was sitting on- It's definitely using one of the, um, more snowboardy runs where they have features and stuff.

I saw Smoge do a little video of monkeying around on a few of the features, but- Yeah, I didn't realize he was attached to it. Yeah. Yeah, he- he put a video out last year, I think the two of them did, and so.

Yeah, there'll be some way to get your bikes and yourself to the top without pedaling, and- [laughs]... I think they're doing three runs, and the best two of- of your three is the current format for your times.

And hopefully this'll take off. I mean, uh, Uncle G and, uh, Tony Grande, and Dustin all went up to a downhill, what, last week or two weeks ago? Yeah, up in Duluth area or- Yeah... somewhere way north of here.

So now Alpine does it. Maybe- maybe it'll catch on. We'll get a little bit more- I think Rib did it last year. Yeah, Rib did one. Rib Mountain did one last year. I don't know if that's coming up again.

It certainly did- We have to look into that. We have to see if that one's- Little Switz should do one. I mean- I think Little Switz has done one. Yeah. I gotta see if we, if we have one at Rib Mountain this year.

In the summer they still do it, but I think it might be once a month that they do it. Not positive, or it might be once a week. I don't know. But they do ser- lift serve it all year long for bikes.

And then what do they do at the, the Rock in Franklin? Is that snowboards only, or? You know what? That place has kinda gone up and down over what they do- Yeah... over there. I can never quite figure it out. Mm-hmm. So,

Yeah, there used to be Wars races there, and in fact- Oh, yeah... uh, when Huge Ass first started, they had a couple races there. Well, now i- Insurance... Wheel & Sprocket has a location right there in that building.

So this event at Silver Lake, what, how, what was that format? It was a relay. Well, they did have solo men and solo females, but that wasn't decided till towards the end. It's, uh, held by CAMBA- Oh, wow...

and, uh, raising money for the trails there, 'cause now they got groomers and everything. They're trying to build up the trail system at Silver Lake and Petrified Springs. Cool. Oh, Pa- I like Petrified Springs.

And, uh, I just-- They, for some reason, they had one of these quotes in one of those e-bike articles, but I just liked it. It was so cool 'cause he's like, "Our trails are being systematically shredded.

Strava's definitely brought some attention to it, I would say, with people shooting for KOMs and such. Mm-hmm. But around here, I don't. Yeah, I think in the Midwest you have less of that.

First of all, the terrain doesn't really lend itself to being a complete jackass. You really have to put some fitness into it.

And, you know, you don't have the, the runs where you can just shortcut, you know, turns all the time and start really shredding and skidding and being, you know, kinda goofy.

And then we talked before about Pat Smage's Alpine Valley thing. I mean, there's just, you know, again, there's also events up in, in Hayward. And come to Wisconsin if you like fat biking. Yeah, absolutely.
