And I knew it was for, like, you know, pickup and curbside and whatever, but then all of a sudden I looked over and I saw, like, pool playing, and I'm like, "Oh, okay.

Our, um, our erst- our, our, our other erstwhile adventurer, uh, Big Sexy, took a trip back home to, uh, Louisiana to try and help out a friend, so he's not on the road currently. So now you're,

you're the, uh, you're up, you're on, you're not even on deck. You're up. You're up for your- Oh, okay. Yeah. [laughs] Good. Wasn't, wasn't sure if, wasn't sure if he's, he was calling in or not.

Um- I have been following his progress somewhat, but, uh, um, so anyway, yeah, uh, over the weekend, uh, my, uh, good friend and neighbor, Tom Schuler, um, who, uh, to your listeners who don't know, was one of the guys who started and raced on the 7-Eleven team.

Um, it was really him and Jim Ochowicz that started it. So he's in the Wisconsin Bicycling Hall of Fame and was a US champion and all that sort of race.

He gave Bernard Hinault, pushed him while Bernard peed in the Giro d'Italia. [laughs] So, uh, so he's, he's got fairly, uh, serious credentials.

Um, uh, um, but perhaps I have a little bit, uh, uh, better palomar when it comes to, uh, bikepacking. So, um, we're, we're a good, a good, uh, uh, team on a road trip.

So, uh, he and I went up to the Bayfield Peninsula to dial in, uh, a few more, um, sections of my, you know, upcoming soon-to-be-announced giant waterfall w- uh, bikepacking trip up there.

And, uh, we, we got back last night and, uh, so it was a, it was a good trip. And you took, what bike did you take?

Well, yeah, and, and so Greg, you and I were talking about, uh, I, I, I took my Milwaukee Bicycle Company Feral 29er.

It's a, a steel, a standard steel 29er, uh, you know, mountain bike that built at Waterford Precision Cycles by Milwaukee Bicycle Company. Um, and, uh, I sort of had them strip the powder coating off it.

Um, it, it had been set up as a straight up, you know, sort of racing 29er, and I don't really do that anymore.

So I had them strip the powder coating off it and, uh, and add some additional braze ons for bikepacking and I built a new rear rack for it and stuff like that. So I took that bike.

Um, when I switched the handlebar and stem and stuff, the brake lines and cables are not ideal for wrapping around bikepacking bags.

Um, so I was gonna have you guys, uh, put new, uh, brake lines on it for me a little bit longer so I could wrap it around the, um, bag, the front handlebar bags better.

But I- the brake lines, I think, took a, they were out of stock and took a little longer to come in.

I, I thought rather than try to do that like three days right before I go out of town, [laughs] it'd be better to wait and do that afterwards. Um, so- Probably, probably a good call. [laughs] The bike... Yeah.

[laughs] So the bike worked out well. Um, I do wanna still have you guys change those brake lines, but, um, but, uh, the bike worked out quite well. Um, and the system was, uh, dialed in pretty well. Tom, I advised...

The Bayfield Peninsula, for those that don't know, is, is a large section of it was a former underground like pre-glacial lake. So it's all sand. It's hilly. It's still really hilly, but it's sand.

Um, so I advised Tom that, you know, although I've ridden a lot of those roads, they're not really roads, you know, but sandy forest roads is what they are. Um, on my, um,

42, you know, millimeter gravel road bike, I, I felt like the mountain bike was the better choice. Um, and you could even bring a fat bike if you wanted to. Um- Oh, that's, that's interesting...

you need, you need- I, I'd, I'd like to do the fat bike thing- Yeah, if you need-... just because you can't fat bike on the beach anymore in a lot of spots, so. Right. Hey, I, yeah, that's a whole nother story.

Um, I, I've been suggesting to anybody that'll listen, I met with a couple of buddies. I, I met with Gary Crandell up there. Um, I met with some friends from the Campbell Board, um, when I, when I was back in Cable.

Um, I always run into somebody in Cable, but, um, I keep suggesting that there are no fat bike races

that I'm aware of held during, you know, summer or warm weather, um, where fat bikes actually have a distinct advantage.

There's a lot of winter fat bike races, um, uh, where fat bikes have a definite advantage over a plus bike or a mountain bike.

But most, if not all, that I'm aware of warm weather, summer, spring, fall mountain bike races, uh, may have a fat bike category, but they're regular mountain bike races. Sure.

Whereas like you could, you could seriously put together a 50 or even 100 mile, um, route for a race up in the Bayfield Peninsula.

You could have 100 mile race that never, that wasn't even a loop that, or that wasn't like a multiple loop course. You know, 100 all different point, all different miles.

Um, and have it be a fat bike race where, where fat bikes would have... You'd be silly to bring anything other than a fat bike 'cause the sand is so soft. That sounds interesting. Yeah.

But pla- There's a, so in, in, so this is way north. This is in the s- in the m- way up north part of the state. What about, does- Yeah...

did sand, did, did, did- So when, when our, back to our trip, yeah, back to our trip.

What, what we did is, once again, just because it's so darn handy and because I love the little town of Cable, um, we, we left my truck in, uh, the Cable Municipal parking lot where you can just leave your vehicle and they don't care.

Um, no fee, no anything, just do it anytime you want. You don't even have to tell anybody. Um, and it's safe there. And then they also have bathrooms with, you know, water and stuff like that there.

So we, we left my truck in Cable and then we took off from Cable, and then we headed kind of northeast towards, uh, the Valhalla Pub & Grill. Um, and, uh, and then we spent the night in Valhalla.

Tom and I had a night in Valhalla. [laughs] There's no other way to say that. With, with, with Thor and the other, uh- Lode, uh, she-... the other, the other, the other fellows[laughs] Yeah.

So, so we, we spent the night in Valhalla, and then, um, we're, we're probably the only people that have ever been able to, like, reach Valhalla and then, like, leave.

[laughs] Although everybo- every, every Viking wants to reach Valhalla. Right. [laughs] It's kinda like, "Well, thanks, Thor, can I go back to my regular life now at all?"

[laughs] At least, at least wait another 20 years. And so then we spent... Yeah, we spent the night there, and w- so that was about 50 miles. Um, and it was a mixed gravel and sandy ATV sorta route there.

And, um, and then we headed, um, west and north and rode up to, uh, Cornucopia, Herbster, went to Lost Creek Falls outside of Cornucopia, as well as Siskiwit Falls outside of Cornucopia, went to Twin Falls in Port Wing.

Um, so rode through Herbster to, down to Port Wing, and then straight, pretty much straight south from Port Wing, Delta, um, uh, through the Mocha Sand Barrens in the Bayfield Peninsula.

And, um, wherein it was, that day was, like, a 70-mile, 75-mile route,

90% sandy terrain, um, various degrees of soft to hard, with a straight-up, like, 25, 30 mile an hour headwind and 92 degrees. Wow. So I kind of felt like Lawrence of Arabia.

[laughs] Yeah, that's, uh, that's warm for up that way. Yeah, it was unseasonably warm, and then remember Schuler's on, you know, 38C truck checkpoint. Um, I'm at least on 2.35s, you know, on my mountain bike.

And, and, uh, so he, you know, he, he had to walk a lot more sections than I did, and he was not able to make quite as good a time in the softer sections as I was. Um, but he did manage it all.

Um, and when we finished in Delta just in time to get a burger at the Delta Diner on their Monday night burger night, which is kind of a big thing for them, um,

and we found out our campground was closed, um, that we were gonna stay in. Oh. F- just because of the- So-... the, because of the COVID thing, or is it... Yeah.

So what the g- we were gonna stay at, uh, Delta Campground which is a county-run cou- campground, um, and it looked open on their website, but when I actually called from the Delta Diner to, like, try to get it checked in while we were eating, um,

they said they were only open to seasonal campers- Oh... um, to reduce the, you know, number of people that were coming through their bathrooms and stuff.

So our options at that point were go across the street and do dispersed camping in, you know, the Chequamegon Forest which is totally allowed and fine. Um,

but then after, honestly after, you know, 75 miles of 92 degrees and a massive headwind and sand, r- I mean, w- I was coated in sweat and bug spray and sand from head to toe.

I was desperate for a shower.

[laughs] So, so Tom and I looked at it and we, we, rather than camp, which we were totally set up to do, um, we figured we'd, we'd, uh, skip the sort of gravel route that I had intended to take back from Delta back to Cable, and we just hopped on the road and took pavement, kind of a straight line.

It was 20 miles straight back to Cable. So we were in Cable by 8:30. A buddy of mine who's on the Campbell board has got an Airbnb. He let us stay there for free. We got showers, cleaned up.

Oh, and I arrived at the Triple G, um, gas station with 30 seconds to spare in which I could buy a six-pack of beer- [laughs]... before they got to close there. I, yeah, that's a bonus. They were- Bonus checkpoint...

they were literally locking the door as I, as I rolled up, and I gave my, my best puppy dog look at 'em, and they said, "All right, you got two minutes."

[laughs] And I said, "All I want is a six-pack of beer," and they said, "Oh-" But they wouldn't give me one... "then you have 30 seconds." [laughs] I just wanted a Pepsi.

[laughs] But so I just ran to the cooler, put my hands in, grabbed the first two six-packs that came out and, and paid for 'em, and I, I ended up with, uh, uh, a n- a six-pack of New Glarus Two Women and, uh, Earth Rider Pale Ale.

And then it was just front of mind when I was at the store today. I'm just like, "Well, oh, oh, oh, hello, Potosi. You're every- oh, yeah, okay, and we are gonna use you today."

This beer received a gold medal at the 2016 World Beer Championships. That's what they say, yes. It is good. Mm-hmm. It is good. It's, uh... I don't know.

Yeah, you know, it- I, there was a Mob Craft rhubarb IPA that I was looking at that was there the last time and they didn't have it There's this giant pile in my backyard that won't leave me alone. Oh. Oh. Oh, oh, oh.

So how do you- If you wanna unload any of that... so how do you use it? Because parts of it aren't usable, correct? Um, so there's this mistaken belief that rhubarb is poisonous. No, it's not.

The leaves are, um, but not the stems. The stems do have some of the toxin in them, but you can still eat the stems raw if you want. However, you could get sick if you ate, like, you know, two pounds of it, you know?

But, um, the leaves are toxic. Um, so what I do is I just take, like, two pounds of rhubarb and I chop it up into little, you know, one-inch chunks and I boil it with, you know- Sugar...

um, eight cups of water and turn it in...

I used to turn it into simple syrup and add a bunch of sugar, but I've learned over time that it, it, uh, when you cook it, it's not quite as sour and it really doesn't need that sugar.

Um, so it acts a little bit more like a lime juice if you're making a margarita or something like that. Yeah. Um, and, uh,

and anyway, so yeah, so I just take a ton of rhubarb and put it in a pot and then cover it all up with water and boil it for 20 minutes and then strain it, and, uh, you got rhubarb juice. Right on.

Some people drink the rhubarb juice straight. Um, I prefer to mix it with tequila. Yeah. [laughs] Right on. I have copious amounts of rhubarb in the backyard if, uh- I, yes... JK wants to come by and- There you go...
