You know, I, as usual, when I go out fat biking, I super overdressed and was a sweaty mess halfway in and learned about zippers. Zippers are good. And I feel way better. For venting. For venting. How about the venue?

What do you think of the convention center here? I like... I would come back here in a heartbeat. Our room is nice. The, the people have been really good to us. The shower outside [coughs] to wash off the bikes is cool.

Uh, it worked out well. This was, like, the first time I've done this part of beach without it being snowpack. Right. Right. Oh, wow. So it was, like, the same terrain, but different.

Now I can't wait to ride it in snowpack. Oh, yeah. 'Cause I've never ridden in snowpack. You know how beaches are. Every time it's a different ride, which is what's really cool. Yeah. Yeah.

Even though, I mean, from the resort to where we turned around and back was a little over three miles probably. Something like that, yeah. But still, you know, it's a great, great to ride on sand. Yeah. Yeah.

And this is one of the few places left on Lake Michigan you can do it right now. Exactly. And, and there's a lot of sand out there. It's great.

I think we- There's crushed, you know, crushed, like, shelly type stuff, and then deep sand, and then... Yeah, it, the, the... it's great riding today. Some, some quick, some quicksand- Gonna...

I had a lot of people lowering their tire pressure. I'm like- Uh, yeah... "You should lower your tire pressure. Those are way too hard." Yeah. I should have listened to you.

I d- it was like I didn't wanna be all flatty, 'cause I know I did that one, on one ride, and it was- It's good on the beach. It w- w- Bad on the pavement. Yeah.

I think they, they- I-... still have the last year's green because the prickly pears are flying out of the warehouse. It's a... It... I'm just g- it's the most beautiful color bicycle I've ever seen. Wow.

Um, it is an RSD Sergeant version three, right? Correct. And you've set it up a couple different ways. Uh, today you had the four inch tires on it. Correct. Tw- And the rigid fork. Yep.

Give us a little kinda quick impression about it. Uh, w- it's a ripper. Um, it's a type of bike that takes me back to my Kona Chute days, where it's an overgrown BMX bike through and through. Nice.

It just really encourage you to go fast, take the g- blinds, you know, take the hits, and if there's some jumps along the way, take the jumps too. It's just the harder you ride it, the more rewarding the bike is to you.

So this was your first fat bike event on sand, is that correct? Correct, yeah.

So I've had a ice cream truck for a while, and I've ridden it on snow plenty of times, so this is my first time on the beach, and it was very excellent bike for the beach, and it was a lot of fun.

How do you compare, like, riding on sand versus snow? What did you find similar or different about the experience? Um, I guess the sand is a bit slipperier, right?

But, like, with the fat bike it really didn't matter, [laughs] especially with the ice cream truck. You know, like, the tires are just, like, humongous. The five-inchers really, yep. Yeah.

[laughs] It's definitely the, uh, the large size of the fat bikes. It's a five-inch platform, so you got really, really big tires. Did you mess with your tire pressure at all?

Yeah, I took it down, like, quite a bit, but yeah. Oh, yeah. Which helps obviously, yeah. Yeah, when you start seeing the sidewalls of the tire wrinkle like a drag racing car- Yeah. [laughs]... it's like, yeah.

That's when you're ready for sand. It's starting to work pretty good right now. [laughs] Ready for sand, yep, yeah. So, and then, uh, yeah.

It, I mean, this is one of the last vestiges of the beach on Lake Michigan right now, so. Mm-hmm. There's some excellent spots to ride sand if you liked it, though. Like up by Wausau. Okay. There's, um, Sand Creek

has a fat bike course that's sand. Oh, is there one here? Yeah. It's, like, kind of a weird area where they don't get a lot of rain. Okay.

Um, and then someday the lake will go down again, and we'll have plenty of beach to ride. Yeah. And I think you'll, you would really dig it. It's so fun, especially- This is a gorgeous area.

Like, coming from Wisconsin, we don't always- It is very pretty... think kindly of this area. I know. But it's great, yeah. Look who decided to show up. I'd totally come. It's really cool.

Like, I would definitely come back here, yeah. So- I will totally come back here. I've never been here before. Yeah. And I think it's just, it's fantastic. It's very, it's super scenic. It's really pretty. Yep.

And, like, there's a lot of ri- I've heard good things about the single track too, which we might get to explore tomorrow- Tomorrow... it sounds like. Yeah. No, we're supposed to. Yeah.

Um, one thing you should consider, too, and anybody else that's listening, is this is super awesome in the winter, too. Mm-hmm. You had experienced on snow, like, is it, like, groomed trails and stuff like that? Mm-hmm.

This is a little different. It's more like the surface of the moon, because the water splashes up, and it makes big mounds of ice. Oh, yeah. Cool. Oh, that's so much fun to ride on.

And then it's got a lot of traction because, for the most part, because the sand gets churned up, too, and it gets mixed in with the snow. Oh, very cool. So it's, um- Yeah, so it's not just like glare ice.

[laughs] Right. And then we- Yeah, cool... and it makes it, and the, the ice will go out into the lake a quarter mile or whatever, so you can ride wherever you want on the shoreline. Oh. It's super awesome.

It's actually- That is really cool... currently better than in the summer, so. Yeah. It, it... Ice riding on, along Lake Michigan's incredible. Yeah. Look at that. Someone's stealing your bike. Oh, that's Donna. Oh.

Again, it's like a really good draw to come to a place that I wouldn't normally have, and this ball is going quite well, and there's lots of people in all different kinds of outfits.

Um, as much as I know about fat biking, it's one of the things I don't have a really good handle on is this particular race series. Uh, Brad's with us. He's actually raced this series, uh, for the last few years.

And Ernie's hanging out over there, too, uh, and Mr. T Burger of course. Um- What's up, guys? Brad. Yeah, Brad. Yeah, g- fill us in with what this thing is.

Um, and, uh, maybe folks will wanna do it, 'cause it sounds like it's a good thing. So I think we got three weeks from now, the first Huge Ass race is going to be at Lake Geneva Canopy Tours. And was that the 23rd?

It's the, it's still in November, right? November 23rd. Yep. Yeah. And, uh, it's a really awesome series. There's multiple different classes for different, like, levels of rider.

They have a, I think a first-timer class, and then citizen, juniors, and an elite class. Something like a wars race in the winter. Yeah, yeah. Very much. But, uh-

Fun, you got number plates that are just paper plates, and you throw them in a bucket at the end. Nice. No, no fancy scoring crap. Okay. It should be. And there's actually six races in the entire series. Six races.

One of them is going to be here at the Illinois Beach State Park area. I think some of it's gonna be in the campground. Yep. Maybe the beach. We might even be able to ride on the ice- Yeah, hopefully...

So in conjunction with this race, we're also gonna be back at this hotel goofing off and playing, hopefully on a big shelf of ice out there, 'cause it, it really is awesome riding. It's like riding on the moon.

Anyway, going back to the Huge Ass, uh, Series, it, it's just, uh, for any skill level. It, it's just an awesome series, and yeah, literally it's like dry, riding on the moon.

Uh- [laughs] So y- have you done several of these, uh, Huge Ass races too? Uh, I've, I've, I've done other races. Uh, I mean, I love riding, uh, in the winter.

Uh, I, uh, the last few years I've been busy d- during the winter and doing other personal stuff. But, uh, I, I'm, I just love riding my bike. In the past, I, I have done quite a few, uh, uh, fat bike, uh, races.

But the, the main thing is, uh, just, uh, anyone listening out there, just, uh, don't be afraid, uh, if your skill level is, is not, uh, high as you may feel. It, it's just, uh, it's fun. Come out, do it.

Where our races is. So, um, right on. And Brad and Ernie are back, and they've been fondling this thing for, like, half an hour. And, uh, why don't you guys tell us what you think?

Just look, this thing is still in the package. We did, we did open the package. Brad'll tell you why we did that. Oh, yeah. Um, obviously these are brand new tires.

This is the first we've seen them in, in, in the real world. Definitely. So, uh, what do you guys think of just looking at the tire? I think it would be my rear tire.

I would definitely run that on the rear in mushy snow, 'cause it would really cup the mushy snow and dig. But then it's also gonna perform good on ice. Let's make one quick observation about it. This tire is studded.

There's 300 studs in this thing, and in fact, they don't make this, like, the- Max cell studs. Right. So even the big ones- Yeah, they're concave and, and, uh-... they're, like, some of the Challenger 4 studs on that...

and really long. Yikes. Um, it's a 26 x 4.2 tire, and, uh, it's not available unstudded like some of the other tires in the 45NRTH line. Right. So this thing is made for, like, extreme conditions. 250.

It even has, like, what is it, triple X or something? I don't know. But, uh- [laughs] Well, it clearly states on it. It is- Extreme all conditions... the ultimate- One, two, three, four, five, six...

studded fat bike tire. It does say that. There's somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 X's- So it has to be true... under extreme there. So, um, but yeah, you guys looked at the tread, the- I think that means snow.

That's- Oh, that could be... that's like a snow sign. Gotcha. I don't know. Right on. I don't know how their, uh- I wouldn't say that's snow... graphic design people do this. Yeah, yeah... but, uh.

This, uh, this tire is clearly made for deep snow than ice, so which is exactly, uh- Best of both worlds... extreme conditions, the best of wor- both worlds. Yeah. Um, uh, well, uh, I was just looking at the design.

Uh, again, I would love to ride this, uh, tire sometime. Uh- Yes, yes... but it just, it just looks like a, an amazing design. Uh, I just can't wait to, to ride it. Yeah, I wanna ride this tire.

That, that help with- They have an ice car... holding the studs. That's cool... again, again, again, these- They roll good forward, and then, like the Dillinger tires, the, you run them basically in reverse on the back.

Right. So that was- That's why we had-... we had a debate about that- [laughs] That's why we had Dom Lesnik... on when we opened it up because the V pattern looks a lot like it would on that. Right.

I mean, but deeper tread, but the V- Way deeper tread, yeah... pattern's like that, so we're like, "Does it run reverse, forward?" And we found out that it does, so that's pretty good information.

When I started, I didn't know that about the Dillingers and I ripped on a buddy for running his backwards, but he actually had the rear tire on the proper way. So, you know, you got sometimes you'll learn the hard way.

Um, just maybe, uh, Chris, give us an idea of how you worked this in with the resort and the city and whatnot, and then- Um- How, how...

You guys tell us how this happened because- Man, it's kind of almost a long, complicated story at this point [laughs] because it started in the springtime.

We'd been doing a lot of really successful group rides out of the shop, uh, coming down to Illinois Beach State Park over the years now, probably almost running on eight years, I would say. Yep. And, um,

at one point, I got a phone call from the resort, which I thought would be like, "Hey, stop riding across our lawn." [laughs] "You kids get out of here." Yeah, "What are you doing?"

But instead it was like, "Hey, we noticed you're like bringing 50 to 150 people across our lawn [laughs] on a monthly basis. What do we do to get in on it with you?"

So we kinda sat down and, uh, hammered some stuff out and said, "Hey, this would be a really great place for people with fat bikes to just come on their own and all winter long.

This could be a really cool new group of people for you guys to, uh, have at your hotel, and the best way to do that would be to have some events."

And so we set it all up, but then they went through a couple different management changes and some bumps in the road, and we had to kinda resell it a couple times. But now we're here- Yeah... drinking...

Winthrop Harbor. Um, how... I mean, this is just a great area to ride year-round, but what makes it especially cool this time of year?

Um, well, what's kinda uncool was that we've got a bunch of flooding and weird [laughs] side effects of global warming, and it's probably gonna get worse from what you told me earlier, another 11 inches added onto the lake.
