That would be interesting to, like, really rip the, rip around the strip. Yeah. Rip the strip. Not, not trying to be clever, but it just works out that way. But, I mean, it would be annoying.

We'd frustrate the shit out of everybody there. That's certainly a thing that happened during Interbike when that was going on. But that would be fun. Yeah, people were- I could see that being fun. You know,

once it gets busy- Sorry if I sounded devious on that one, but- Deviant. Right. Yeah, so, uh, yeah, Sin City, uh, making money, not going to the strip, and, uh, going out to Blue Diamond was good stuff. That's, uh...

It's a little enclave. I think the original reason it's there is because there's a spring, and it was a Union Pacific-owned thing, but it's at least 10 minutes outside the edge of Vegas. So it's not really in town.

Which, which direction? You'd be going towards Pahrump. Uh, north, west? Which would be kind of southwest. Okay. Or yeah. Island. Yeah, south, southwest. One of those directions.

Oh, that, uh, that, that whole Blue Diamond complex, I don't know how many miles of trails are there exactly, but 50 maybe. Mm.

And it's, you can ride right out of the town of Blue Diamond, or there's a bunch of trail heads off the highway going towards Pahrump. [laughs] And, uh, it's very deserty, super cool.

Um, a lot of it is nice and flowy with cacti to look at, and if there's a little bit of rain, some fancy little flowers on the side of the trail.

And then there's some pretty rocky, you know, human head-sized rocks on some of the descents and stuff. So, uh, we were riding out there with a friend of ours that rigs out there with Marcus a lot named Andrew,

and, uh, his buddy owns a shop in, in Blue Diamond, so he lent me a Trek full suspension 27-plus bike. Nice. For the 12 to 14 minutes of downhill in the two-hour ride- [laughs]... it was really cool.

[laughs] The rest of the time it wasn't as cool? No, it was pretty cool still. I mean, it was... I haven't ridden a Trek in, I don't know, except for a 19... What are, what are they? '89, the 950s we had one year?

Yeah, exactly. Something like that. The 89, yeah. Except for that, I haven't ridden a Trek in 30 years, I bet. Was it, like, lockout and stuff? Could you- It had a dropper post, and it had, uh, uh...

I don't think it had a lockout fork. No, it didn't. But, um, [clears throat] - So it has a dropper post and not a lockout fork? Yeah. What the hell? I don't know. What is Trek thinking? I... Yeah.

But, uh, yeah, great trails if you guys get out that way. I would recommend it. Uh, Marcus was riding an unsuspended fat bike and was doing really well.

Um, he's come a long ways in the last couple of years riding out there, so. It isn't like you can't do it, it's just like you can close your eyes and do it on a full suspension bike, sorta. [laughs] Nice.

Not worry totally, 'cause I don't know the trail that well. I'm like, "Oh, I'm offline. Oh, don't worry about it." [laughs] [laughs] Um- A little forgiveness. Yeah.

That said, I was trying to figure out what bike to send out there, but I'm only going out for two more weeks, so I don't think it's probably worth sending a bike. Yeah. Might be, might not.

[laughs] How, how was the shop while I was gone? Quiet. I looked in on the camera. You were, uh- Reading... you were... There was like 28 people in here all trying to buy bikes at the same time. And they were naked.

Uh, according to the weather I saw this week, this is the lowest amount of snowfall we've had in Wisconsin this winter since, like, 1873. [laughs] That number might not- Man, I'm not stoked... be quite exact right.

Right? And the, I'm like the, I'm like the guy with all the snowmobiles in his motorcycle shop waiting to sell them, and there's no snow. Right. Right. 'Cause nobody's gonna think about a fat bike- Uh-uh...

even in Wisconsin, bunch of s- whatever people. [laughs] It, not only has there not been snow, Mark. [laughs] It's actually been unseasonably warm, which is creepy too. Wow.

Yeah, if you're- Well, last winter we had kind of the same thing out here. It went super warm and it was super dry, but this year it seems like we're getting some pretty good snow, so I'm stoked.

Man, I've been seeing some photos. It looks like you are having a good time out there. Yeah. Oh, yeah, definitely. Um, uh, there's... I'm learning a bunch of lessons, man.

Um, do you remember way back in the day when I first, uh, met you and started talking to you, Greg? Um, how, I mean, Sven. Uh, you know, how I was all wingnut, wanted to jump off of everything and just really aggressive?

Well, after, after a bunch of injuries and a bunch of healing, um, I've had to change my MO, and so I've kinda moved more into the bike camping adventure kinda thing instead of the jumping off stuff thing.

I c- I can feel you. At my advanced age, I'm very much headed in that direction as well. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. So what have you found out there? Oh, I'll tell you what, there's...

Oh, uh, it is, it is amazing, but I am learning some very, uh, some very real challenges on bike camping gear in the kinda terrain where I ride.

Um, the places that, uh, I wanna go to are, you know, 2,000 feet of vertical climb and two miles kinda places,

and when you descend down that stuff, any kind of weight on your bars, like, you know, bar bags and stuff hanging around, are just swinging around like pendulums and- [laughs]... bouncing around.

I think I'm gonna go to a full rack system. Yeah, it's, it's kinda...

I always, uh, try to figure out where it's gonna be, uh, useful to use either a f- like a rack system or a, a bag-on-bike system and, you know, blasting through single track, when you got a lotta tight stuff, the bag-on-the-bike system makes a lotta sense.

But if you've got the room, man, I think you're on, on the right track keeping the weight low and keeping it, uh, where it's not gonna affect your handling as much. Might be a great thing. Yeah. Behind your ass. Yeah.

In fact, I've, I've got a, a story that I've been basically done with for about three months, but I keep, uh, changing the end of it 'cause it keeps getting longer.

[laughs] And I'll be sending that in, and it'll be kind of basically a sum-up of bike camping and the gear I was using and where I was going and some of the lessons I learned.

But it'll also talk a little bit about the change in my fat bike life from being, uh, I guess extreme or rad- Right, right... sort of, I guess. Yep.

And, and then turning it more into a different kind of, I guess, extreme, like going to really extreme places, beautiful places, and staying there overnight.

I've, I've been more focused on getting healthy, getting into shape, and making sure that my financial life is solid.

When you were out in, uh, Utah, what was it, um, '13 or 2014 when you came out here, uh, to the, uh, Saddle Drive at Snowbasin? Right, right. Yep, great time. Yeah, definitely.

When, when that time came around, uh, the economy and everything was still crazy, and finally, life is good. Like, every aspect of my life is really starting to kick ass, and,

yeah, I, I'm really looking forward to a lot more adventures and doing a lot more stuff. It's been a long time in coming, man. I'll tell you what, that back injury took me out for almost a solid three years. Hmm. Damn.

And, and outside, of course. Yep. It was close- Of course, of course... on the, uh, on January 2nd. It actually [laughs] was very close. It was pretty chilly. Yeah, and slickery. Yeah. And so I got on it and I rode it

all the way up the driveway [laughs] to my Jeep. [laughs] Hey, I never said I would follow. [laughs] So I'm right over here. And I was ass on saddle and I rode it- Yep... and it was shitty out. It- Da, da, da, da, da...

th- when I did this every day in 2013- [laughs]... there was one day where it was like 25 below zero and I thought, "I'm gonna go out and do a lap of the River West 24."

[laughs] And I got to checkpoint two and I'm like, "That's as far as a lap as I wanna go," and I rolled back home. [laughs] I'm like, "Yep, I'm done." [laughs] Yeah, man.

Hey, uh, Mark, I w- do you remember the Fitzgeralds that owned, uh, the, uh, place in, uh, Teton Village, the bike shop, Fitzgeralds? I think it was called. I don't know. Yeah, it sounds fr- familiar. Yes.

Yeah, they, uh, they sold the shop a few years back and, um, they went on the road, I think last year maybe, promoting a couple of books for kids. I got one of them right here called Taking the Lead.

And, uh, so I was out at this, uh, Blue Diamond complex and I saw this motor home out there with the Buddy Pegs, which is the publishing company, uh, trailer on the back, and I thought, "Huh, that's kinda cool.

I wonder if that's the Fitzgeralds happen to be here when I'm here." And, um, I didn't stop and leave a note on the vehicle.

And I was out on the trail and I saw this young, young kid, about nine years old, kinda doing a really good job, and then a lady with, behind him. And, uh, I went, "Oh, that's really cool."

And then like, uh, a m- mile later I'm like, "Wait a second." I tried to put two and two together and I'm like, "I think that was the Fitzgeralds." [laughs] So

I gotta shoot 'em, I gotta shoot 'em a note and say, "I saw you guys [laughs] out in Las Vegas." [laughs] That's kinda cool.

Yeah, I was looking forward to talking to 'em, but by the time we got done the vehicle had moved. And when we were on the top of the hill, I saw it- Mm...

and I'm like, "That doesn't look like where it was before," but I, I didn't really have a spatial orientation as to where we were, so by the time we got to the bottom it definitely wasn't where it had been parked earlier, so.

Then you have the Dremel and kind of- Yeah, kind of ease out... shave them down a little bit so you can put a regular wrench on them, and then break them and then drill them out. Yep. That's, that happens.
