Straight out of Spring Green, Wisconsin, we got Furthermore Brewing's Fatty Boom Blatty Belgian pale ale. Can you believe I found a beer called Fatty Boom Blatty? That's a good one.

It's got 7.2% alcohoozy, and the label warns that this is a dangerously drinkable Belgian, not unlike my Uncle Jean-Claude Van Damme. [laughs] Note- You wanna pop 'em? Here we go. We're popping it. Boom.

Yeah. Co- One of, one of Jim Huber's favorite beers... Colin got us little, little tasting glasses 'cause we're fancy- Yeah... over here. Fancy, fancy. Oh. You want me to play mother? He usually uses that with the girls.

What does your beer taste like? Um, it's a, it's a pleasant beer. It's crisp. Uh, it's a pretty low alcohol content. Being a session ale, it's kinda made for all day long drinking.

And, uh, you know, it's a little hoppy, but not overly, uh, in your face. So it's j- basically an all-day drinking beer. Yeah. Uh, the guys from Odell's do really awesome stuff. I'm personally a fan of

Uh, their wild ale I had when I was out there like two or three years ago that was made with their own local cultured yeast, or locally isolated yeast from their brewery, was awesome. [burps] Very good. Yeah.

What's that, uh, Fatty Boom Blatty like? I taste banana right off the, right off the bat, right on the front end of this thing. Yeah. It's, uh, it's definitely got that Belgian ale yeast character to it.

The banana is very present. Yeah, there are lots of phenols going on. Um- It's fizzy... the, yeah, it's- [laughs]... it's bottle conditioned, I think, so it's gonna, like, generate a lot of foam, generate a lot of head.

Um- Head. [laughs] Head. It's a very pleasantly fruity, you know, drinkable. There's not much, you know, too much malt character. It's just very... It's all the yeast.

It's what you're tasting is, it's showing off the yeast. It's showing off the Belgian yeast characteristics, which are unique- Yeast... to that style.

So registration goes like this: You walk in the door to a strip mall that, there's this vacant building, and that's where we're, we're bringing registration from, out of. You walk in.

You grab that beer, you walk to the wall, and you grab a six-pack. So you get a six-pack of beer, and it's all Oskar Blues, also.

They, they produce like 2,000 cans of beer and, and then you, from there you go to registration table, and you sign the waiver, and then you come to me.

And then we also give you a pub crawl ticket that goes to seven bars, and there's seven bars in the town that, that you go to that give you, when you get punched there, that gives you, um, the, uh, what's the study?

The mountains are slightly covered by some lovely clouds, and the ocean is at high tide, uh, 36 inch, or 36 foot tidal. Um, second largest in the world, so that's pretty cool to watch.

Uh, yeah, so my name's Jill, and I am one of the co-founders of Skirts and the Dirt. I've been mountain biking for a couple of years now, and racing for just one year. Cool.

Uh, I race fat bikes and, um, mountain bikes- Right on... in Grand Rapids, so. And Julie? This is Julie. I've probably been riding for maybe three or four years, too. Love riding regular mountain bike or fat bike, too.

I didn't race as much as Jill. [laughs] She's a super racer. Really excited to be here today. Cool.

Well, that's, uh, that's kind of the core of, of what I know about Skirts and Dirt, is that it's an event for people of varying experiences to embrace the race, uh, culture or the race day or racing. Race fun.

So we thought you, we'd invite you on the show so you could tell us about the Skirts and Dirt mountain bike event that you're hosting. So tell our listeners all about, all about the all about.

So, um, we, we wanted to put together a women's only race. Um, being a, a female in the mountain biking scene, sometimes it's a little bit intimidating to, to start racing.

Um, and when you do get out there and you start racing, sometimes it's super intimidating 'cause a lot of guys will fly past you or clip you with their handlebars when they try to pass you or something, and it's scary.

So a lot of people hesitate when signing up for races because they're just a little bit more timid. They're unsure of themselves. They might be a little bit afraid to sign up.

So we wanted to organize a race for beginners to kind of get excited about racing, to just kind of get out there and have a good time, to see that it's not really, you know, super intimidating.

It's not, it's not something that's going to hurt you a whole lot. Um, and it should be, you know, it should be about having fun. So that's kind of the idea that we had. We love fun here at Fat Bike Radio.

[laughs] It's one of our core values, duh, fun. [laughs] Well, cool. And you guys are gonna have a fat bike category, right? Called Fabulously Fat, if I'm correct? [laughs] It is. That's funny. That's too cool, man.

E- explain your categories, the way it says on the website. So we wanted our categories to be fun, too. So for those women who are new to mountain biking, never raced before, we have a Never, Ever category.

[laughs] Um, for those that have raced a little bit but aren't really super serious mountain bikers, we have the Weekend Warrior category. Probably what would be equivalent to expert is the Dirt Diva category.

And for y- the fat bikes, it's Fabulously Fat. [laughs] That's, that's awesome. Because fat bikes are fabulous. [laughs] Well, cool. They are. Um- Those are awesome categories.

[laughs] We also have a Girls on Wheels category for, um, kids under 12. Um- Oh, cool... just because, you know, I wish I would've started mountain biking when I was 12. That would've been really, really awesome.

Um- Yeah... but we wanted to encourage women of all ages to sign up for the race. That's very cool. Well, maybe we... We just found out that we're getting a kids' fat bike, a 24-inch wheel fat bike. No way.

Maybe we'll bring that out and, uh, let some of your younger lady riders ride this new- Are you seriously? Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, that would be so cool. That would be- Isn't that cool? That would be incredible.

Uh, I spent most of the past week in Colorado, but before I got here, I stopped in Cheyenne, Wyoming to take the pulse of fat biking in the state with the least people in our fine union, and found out that fat biking is alive and well in the Cowboy State.

What'd you learn there, partner? Partner. [laughs] Partner. I checked in at the Bike Station. That's a specialized concept store there in Cheyenne. Concept.

As you'd guess, they've sold numerous Fat Boys, but a bunch of Pugs and Salsa Mukluks as well.

I talked to Kenny, one of the wrenches there, for a while about the trail systems in the area, including the, uh, IMBA Epic up at Curt Gowdy State Park, and he informed me that they've got some new groomed-only-for-fat-bike trails coming this winter about 30 miles west of Cheyenne on national park land that's already heavily used by cross-country skiers and snowshoers, who are gonna get to keep all those different user groups happy.

And then over at Rock on Wheels, I met up with sh- the owner, George, and service manager, Travis. Wait, this is all in Cheyenne? This is all in Cheyenne. I didn't think there was that much in Cheyenne.

Over at Rock on Wheels in Cheyenne, I met up with, uh, George, the owner, and service manager, Travis, where I learned that they have an active rental business in the snowy season, as well as some cool custom powder-coated shop rigs that were basking out in the July sun when I stopped by.

They've had several Farleys go through, as well as numerous Pugs, Moonlanders, and Mukluks, and they're telling me that riders are using them for everything from around-town trips to major mountain expeditions.

Just like in a lot of oth- other areas of the country, it seems like it's, uh, changing by the year as to what's available, so local knowledge is always the best thing. There'll be links in the show notes.

So how are they, uh, how are they getting on national park land with bikes? Good question. I don't know the answer to that, but, uh- They're probably just riding them...

well, they are specifically having some groomed trails, so they've got some interaction with the local groups.

I mean, they had the, uh, the, uh, summit out there in Ogden, Utah last year, and some of these guys were over there, so- Oh, cool... uh, this is, this is a lot of heavy, uh, in, in...

Out west here, there's a lot of national park land, a lot of BLM land, so a lot of local- BLM land rules. BLM. Yeah. Well, we'll have to, uh, we'll have to follow up on that and just see how that goes.

So anyway, day one, I, uh, I headed down to Boulder to pick up a new lens for my camera. I took that up into Rocky Mountain National Park to do some shooting. I found a few elk up there willing to cooperate.

Wait, is this- Those guys are on the other side of Wyoming. We, it doesn't really count here in Cheyenne area. But, uh, anyway, I did get to meet up with Ryan from Moon Men.

I met him at New Belgium Brewing, where he- Uh-oh... still holds down a, quote, unquote, "day job" in their creative department. After that, we headed over to the Moon Men shop.

Things were in full swing there as Todd and Paul were getting the finishing touches on a couple of frames that they're taking up to the Single Speed Worlds in Alaska.

The consensus was that they'd be working till about 3:00 AM last night, right up to the time when they had to catch the shuttle to Denver International for the flight to Alaska. So good luck, guys.

I hope you get everything done. Yeah, that's cool. And, uh- We're gonna, uh- Well, I-... meet up with those guys at Single Speed USA in August. Yeah. [burps] Yeah, yeah.

So while I was at Moon Men, uh, Fort Collins is kinda interesting in that a lot of these, uh, smaller businesses share space with other businesses. In the same building as, uh, Moon Men is a place called Yendra Built.

A guy named Zack Yendra owns it, and he's got a couple of projects going that involve fat bike parts.

One of them is a 10-person pedal-powered school bus that the City of Fort Collins has commissioned so that, uh, they can use it to promote cycling and have a couple of responsible adults on the front and eight radical kids on the back of it.

It's using 80-millimeter rims and five-inch fat bike tires. And then he's working on a modification to their half-barrel hauler, which is already out there. I think Colin's seen it at Great American Beer Festival. Fact.

Yeah. True. And, uh, i- it's got a 36-inch rear wheel and 29er fronts at the present time, but he's working on a modification for a 29er, or a 29-plus rear, and fat bike wheels in the front.

So we're gonna keep- There you go-... an eye on that... that'd be sweet. Instead of putting your kid on Ritalin, make him pedal the 10-person bus to school. That'll calm him down for a little bit.

Um, so aft- after we talked about all that stuff at his shop, he convinced me to do a guest spot on KRFC's Bikes and Beer radio show. That beamed out live to all of Fort Collins area Wednesday evening.

One of the things I learned about there is even though the bike culture here is pretty established, they're doing their first, um, the first deal where they actually close off the streets.

They've been doing it in Madison for a while. It's really big down in South America. I forget what they call it, but they close off the streets to car- They'll call it, is it, is it critical mass? No, no, no.

This is more of a close the streets off to cars and let everybody, you know, rollerblade and walk and have party and bicycle, and there's two of them in Madison already that have happened.

I thought that was like what it was like all the time in Fort Collins.

Yeah, this is more of a, they gotta get, you know, they gotta keep people on top of it, otherwise, you know, these places slip if you don't, uh, keep it in front of them, you know? Uh, that's what they're trying to do.
