the nose is, uh, very much of wheat. Of, and is, is typical of Belgian-style beers. They use a lot of wheat in their beers with a turbid mash and a long boil sometimes. Um...

with the, the Belgian yeast, which is very unique to that region. Uh- Sounds good. So the cool, the cool thing about this beer right now as I'm drinking it [bottle clinks] is the nose is very, like, very light bread.

You smell, like, a, a bread, you know? And you take a sip [sips] and it's very, um, dark caramel, toffee, and you can tell they boiled it a long time. It's got kind of that scorched taste that

Well, I was, uh, finished up my trip on the Front Range at the end of the week last week with a visit to a couple of more, uh, manufacturers or slash distributors out in Colorado Springs.

Stopped in at Borealis Bikes, and, uh, we'll have a pretty good story on that. Went to a race the following day that had a fat bike class in it.

Also saw John Severson from Colorado Specialty Velo, and got a chance to ride the Puffin and the, uh, 29+ bike that Singular makes as well on his urban single track trail that they're working on in Colorado Springs, and that was a pretty good time.

After that, I took a plane over to Utah and went to the QBP SaddleRide event where they introduced a couple of new bikes. Had all of the QBP brands, Surly, Salsa, Cogburn.

There was probably 50% of the bikes up there were fat bikes, so they were definitely trying to get people out on them. And the, the new stuff that I checked out, one of the new bikes was the Salsa Bucksaw.

That's their new full suspension bike. Uh, if you remember right, they've been working on a full suspension bike for some time now.

This is a totally redesigned version with a split pivot from Dave Weagle and a Bluto up front. And, uh, took them a while to get it to market, but I think they did a good job in waiting.

If they would've introduced a full suspension frame earlier, there wouldn't have been a fat bike fork to go with it anyway that would've been suitable.

So, uh, the Bluto coming out made it possible for them to kind of finish the design up, and, uh, it really rides great. Um, I can't make it go fast enough to make it do anything really obnoxious to me.

I'm sure there's guys that can ride it way faster and get in way more over their head than I would, and it would come back and, and beg for more.

So I think it's something that's gonna appeal to a, definitely a certain type of rider. It's an expensive bike, though. Really expensive. Yep. [laughs] And it's, only parts of it are carbon at this point, so, uh- Oh...

you still have an, you still have an aluminum front triangle. And, uh, you know, there's, there's room for more money down the road if they decide to make a carbon version.

Um, the w- the, the real surprise of the show, uh, we didn't even hear about it until a day before the event, is the new Salsa Blackborow, which is their five-inch platform fat bike, 196 rear end, 150 front end.

It was a really... First of all, it was a surprise, but getting on it was also a surprise. They kind of positioned it as an expedition fat bike, but it's really fun to ride. It's got a shorter stay than you'd expect.

It's got a little bend in the seat tube to move that big five-inch tire forward. Oh, it does. And, uh, yeah, it's, it's really, you know, it's a really fun bike. I was, like I said, I was surprised.

I had just ridden the Ice Cream Truck right before it, and man, the Ice Cream Truck really cruises down the wide open trails and just, I mean, it gives you so much confidence to go fast.

Whereas the, the Blackborow to me was a little bit more playful in the twisties, and, uh, I, I... It was, basically, it was my favorite bike to ride at the event.

Um, so- So that's made of, that's made of aluminum, right, the Blackborow? It is... Yep, it's an aluminum bike. Uh, it runs Clown Shoes and the big five-inch Bud and Lou tires. Yep, good, good fun.

I would recommend getting on one and checking it out. That, does that come, uh... At the show, I saw they had pictures of it single speed, but I also heard it was a dingle speed, which is something- Dingle...

that, uh, is sweet, and everyone should check out dingle speeding, 'cause it's cool. Right. Yeah, the dingle speed basically runs two different gear ratios and has the same chain length.

So it's simply a matter of swapping it from one set of cogs to the other to give you a lower or a higher ratio, depending on where you're riding. In, at Snowbasin, low ratio for sure.

That place has got altitude all over the place and big hills. But, uh, yeah, it's gonna be an interesting one for the, uh, people that want something that's more reliable.

And, uh, you know, if you're out in the middle of nowhere- Well-...

you know, it's a great thing to have something that doesn't have, uh, mechanical problems like a derailleur to, to mess you up when you're 40 miles from the nearest, uh, town or whatever. Yeah. It's...

I think, I think a lot of people that are gonna want this bike, though, are gonna want the, a, a five-inch bike with symmetrical 190, 150 spaced, all that stuff, that's light, you know, that's...

And you can run gears on it, right? It's gonna have... It's g- It's got a derailleur hanger- Yeah... built onto it? Yeah, there, there's a version, there's a version with a two by 10 system on it- Yeah...

which is the one I rode, because frankly, the hills are too big for me- Oh, man... to be a single speed hero out there. Yeah. So, uh- We rode, it had the two by 10 setup on it. Yep. Yep. Shimano. Yeah. SRAM.

You know, the, the thing that struck me about the show, because of all the brands of fat bikes that QBP makes, is there's a proc- I, I mean, there's at least, if you include 29+ in the conversation, 8 or 9 or 10 different platforms now with slightly different, um, uh, angles on what f- on what kind of riding you're gonna be doing.

So somebody should be able to find a fat bike that suits their riding style if they just look around a little bit.

Um, they're all just focused a little bit more to optimize the platform towards a little bit better for certain types of riding.

They all have the bene- the, they all have the benefit of flotation and immense traction, and then they kind of fine-tune them for whatever kind of riding somebody might wanna do from that point, so.

So moving on from, uh, Salsa's new bikes, um, I was curious if... Uh, you had mentioned, uh, something to me before we recorded the show about, uh, the Singular fat bike. Did you get to ride- Right...

some of those, the Puffin? Yeah, Singular Puffin. Yeah, it, it rides, it's a nice trail bike.

Um, and it's a little unique in that it's got an eccentric bottom bracket, so by ch- changing where the eccentric is, you can kind of effectively change the chain stay length a little bit.

Um, or you can run it single speed. The one I rode had a, had a derailleur system on it, so you can use that, uh, eccentric to actually change your chain stay length.

And the, the section we rode on was just a twisty, like river bottom, urban single track trail, and I thought it did a pretty good job on that. Also, I think their 29+ is called the Rooster.

Um, yep, that one I also rode, and, uh, both of them were Severson size. He's a bigger guy than I am, but I, I thought they- Oh, yeah... I thought they rode great.

So, the, the Puffin, what, how did that... You, you said the, you loved the Blackburrows ride. How does the Puffin compare to the Blackborrow?

Well, Puffin's a four-inch platform, so a little bit different ride characteristics, but it's a playful bike, too. It's a, it's a trail geometry. Oh, got it. Comparatively.

I, it's, you know, it's hard to fi- to put stuff in words. I enjoy riding bikes. These bikes ride well. I was on, uh- He was riding a size up from his size- Oh, that's right... too. And it was a little bit big.

So it's, that's hard to judge. It was a little- So what do we have to do, uh, how many hand jobs do we have to give John Severson to get a test bike in a size that fits one of us?

What scent, what scent lube do we have to buy? Yeah, well, uh, he's, you know, he, he's just getting ramped up. He doesn't have a lot of stock yet, but we'll get one from him.

So we're here to talk about the time trial, but first I want to, uh, ask you to share the venue, Alpine Valley, uh, Ski Resort, they have a rich history of mountain biking. Why don't you tell us about that?

Well, I believe the first mountain bike race at Alpine Valley was WARS race. It would've been, would've been way back in the early 2000s.

It has the highest drawing WARS race ever, which for people don't know, is Wisconsin Off Road Racing Series. And then even, uh, later than that, NORBA actually held a national race here, uh, both downhill, cross country.

You know, the biggest, baddest stars in the United States were here racing.

And then all at once, uh, they were no longer allowed to race here and trails overgrew and came to an end, and I'm trying to reignite the passion of mountain biking here.

And you've been, uh, you've been building a bunch of new trail, right? I've been building trails constantly.

So far it's been one continuous trail with just shorter loops off of it, but yeah, about three hours a night and two hours on the weekend. It's turned me from a mountain biker- You're-...

to a trail builder, but I'm loving it. You and Butch, man, just relentless trail building all the time. Yeah. Yep.

He's like the Michelangelo and you're like the, uh, Leonardo da Vinci of trail building in the great southeastern Wisconsin trail renaissance. [laughs] So, uh- Yeah, you know, we have...

Butch, Butch and I built trails together out at, uh, Kettles for several years, and now we have our own projects going and built similar trail styles. A little bit different.

We have different topo to work with, so- Well, the- We'll both have everywhere we build great trails... the description I keep on hearing about your trail is flowy, so which is nice to hear. Ooh.

So, and I, and I know that you come from that, uh, that motocross background where you just wanna- Get... Pin it. [laughs] Yeah. Yeah, yeah.

So listen, the real reason that we wanted to get you on the show is to talk about this Alpine Valley Time Trial, so why don't you fill in the folks on, uh, the particulars on that? Okay. Well, let's see.

The race is the 26th, this Saturday on July 26th. It is an off-road time trial. Registration opens at 8:00 and ends at 10:30. A racer will start every 30 seconds.

The cat one leading out, but then the rest of the categories, including the fat bike class, will be intermixed. The lap's approximately six miles long.

The baddest boys around so far are getting around the course in 35 minutes, but there's gonna be added course and a cyclocross-esque type section for the spectators to watch.

Uh, a lot of ribbon racing through the side of the hill and some log jumps. So it'll be great spectating along with just racing.

And, uh, the Wars race was canceled, so we kind of picked the ball up and ran for people in southeastern Wisconsin who still have a place to race this weekend.

And, uh, so far, the- we're hoping to have a pretty good turnout. That's killer, man.
