We do probably have some projects I can talk about. Uh, we also have some projects that I really can't talk about, but we're always working on, on stuff.

And, uh, so, uh, yeah, was there something specific that you're, [clears throat] you're interested in? [laughs] No, I am just completely fishing. I've got, I've got my worm on a hook, and uh- Yeah...

I'm just assuming, uh, I don't know, maybe, maybe rims, maybe your own brand of tires. I don't know. Uh-huh. I'm usually wrong when I ask these questions, so... [laughs] Yeah, yeah, yeah. No.

Well, I, I can tell you that, uh, we're, we're working on an upgrade to our aluminum frame right now. And, um, and so we've got some kind of cool stuff coming out for the aluminum frame.

We're, we're gonna make some, uh, updates to our sliding dropout frame. And, uh, and we got some other stuff, uh, in the works that's still, you know, be kind of premature to talk about it.

Uh, we, we like to kind of hammer that stuff before we release it, and, and so we're, we're kind of in the hammering stage right now. Well, cool.

So it, it probably be, uh, too early to talk about it, but you know, some of the, some of the stuff, uh, the goal is to kind of present it at Interbike. So are you gonna be...

All right. Fair enough. Well, let's, let's, uh, get into your bike here. I actually got to ride this bike, right? You're still rocking that same, uh, 21-pound bike, right? Yeah. That was the bike I...

Uh, I built it up for the, uh... I did the Rough Sea Pedal Invitational Race, and, uh, and, and so I, I kind of left it unchanged and, uh, been kind of riding it around. Fun.

So, uh, but yeah, that's the bike that you had a chance to ride when you were, when you were up here.

Uh- I got to ride it up and do- up and down your side street, which was all snowy and, and wintry, and there's a little hill.

And I zoomed down to the bottom of the hill and I spun around, and as soon as I started going uphill, I actually said out loud, "Oh, not fair." [laughs] "This thing just is self-propelled."

I think, I think that's what you said, "Reveille," pretty much. I, I remember that. Yeah. Yeah.

It's kind of, um, it's kind of an eerie feeling, you know, if, if you've been riding fat bikes for a while and, uh, you know, you, you've kind of been with it sort of since the beginning and, and you, you grab a, one of these carbon bikes, it's just, uh, insanely, insanely light.

It, it doesn't feel like a, a, a fat bike at all. But, um, you know, I, uh, I, I did wanna kind of gooch this thing out and make it, make it pretty goochy.

Uh, but you know, the final build, I did make some, uh, concessions to, uh, to the, to the race to make it kind of practical. But overall, it's, it's just, uh, it, it's a lot of fun to ride. You know, to...

All things being equal, you know, I think, uh, lighter bikes are maybe a little bit more fun for, to ride than really heavy bikes. Yeah. It's, it's- But, um, that, that's just me, you know? It opens such

a realm of possibility for these omni, omni-terrain, uh, bikes when you take the fat platform and you make it as light as a single speed 29er. Well, maybe a geared 29er.

Uh, it really, really... It, it busts a lot of barriers that people put up for fat bikes, such as, you know, that they're just for snow, et cetera. They become ultra trail bikes and ultra exploration vehicles.

Yeah, you know, it just really broadens the, the definition, uh, a lot. And, uh, you know, it, it's an ex- an incredibly versatile bike. You know, you're right.

When you get the weight down there, you could, you know, you can use that thing for a lot of, a lot of different things, you know? So- It blurs the lines... uh, I've, I've been really, really happy with it.

So you've got a, a Whiteout frame and fork. And, uh, if I remember correct- Yeah... you run an XX1 on that, right? I am. Yeah, I'm a big fan of the 1x11.

I know, uh, [clears throat] there's a, a lot of guys out there s- um, you know, still kind of digging on the double for the front. And, uh, but I, uh, I'm pretty sold on the 1x11.

And, uh, I, uh, I use a 32-tooth ring in the front, and, uh, that seems just about right for me. And, um, so I just like it.

One thing I, I did do though is, uh, I, I'm a huge fan of the grip shift for, for winter riding. Mm-hmm. And, uh, and I've actually kind of sort of come to love it for summer riding too.

And, uh, so I use, uh, a 1x11 with a grip shift on there. It's just a real simple mechanism, very reliable. And- And, uh, so I, I-... whose crank are you running on that? I, uh, I'm sorry. What was that?

Whose crank are you running on that? Which crank? I'm using the Next SL from Race Face. Very nice. Yeah, I have that on my fat bike. Yeah. Super light, and has been really pretty bomb-proof.

Six months on that thing and- Yeah. You know, what I, what I like about the Race Face stuff is, you know, they, they, uh, they're kind of early adopters. You know, we...

That was one of the problems we had, was trying to find a vendor that would work with us on the cranks.

And, uh, and Race Face, they were, they were really interested in the project, and, and, uh, so they, they've been great to work with. So we, uh, we, we are big fans of the Race Face stuff, so. Yeah. Cool. And it's...

They're right regionally... I mean, that's, that's the closest thing you can be to Alaska and not be there. They're in British Columbia, right? [laughs] So.

Yeah, we have a special, special kinship with the Canadians, you know? So, uh- There you go... [laughs] we, we sort of feel half Canadian Okay there. So, uh, what are you doing for, uh, for rider controls?

Bar stems, seat post? Um, well, so, uh, you know, I, I have this, uh, set up with Enve components, and, uh, I, I, I like the Enve stuff, uh, a lot.

The, the actual reason why I have the Enve stuff on there is, uh, we built a couple of show bikes for Interbike, uh, last year, and, um, they had Enve cockpit components on there.

And, uh, so I, I basically stole and put them on my bike. So [laughs] Well, very good. Re- That's where they came from... repurposed. And Enve is, is high-end, super light, great stuff. Oh, yeah.

And it, and it's bomber, too, and so I, I wasn't... I, I wanted to keep it really light, but I, I needed something I had a lot of confidence in, uh, you know, for some of the longer, longer races last winter.

Um, so I, I just felt pretty good about putting that stuff on the bike. Um, now one of the interesting things is, uh, for the cable and housing. Mm-hmm.

Um, and I, uh, I, I decided to go ahead and try that Jagwire Elite- Ah... uh, stuff, the, the aluminum link housing. Right.

And, uh, of course I was trying to build it up light, but the other thing I was trying to do is, is, uh, make it so I could put a harness on the front and keep the, the cables really clean.

And with that stuff, you can kind of bend that stuff around and, and, uh, move it, and it doesn't, it doesn't, you know, it doesn't affect the, the controls at all. The shifting. Yeah.

So I, uh, I, I really enjoyed the, uh, the Jagwire Elite. That's always a, a point of, of very crowded area when you put that, when you put that handlebar bag on, everything gets smashed up in, up against that top tube.

So you found that the, that the aluminum housing worked out better for you, huh? Yeah, I think so.

Yeah, because I was able to bend that stuff around a lot, and I've had problems before in the past, you know, when you put a sleeping bag, you know, in a harness up there. Mm-hmm.

You kind of bend in the, the housing around it. If it gets really cold, you know, I've, I've had it happen to me before where the, the housing will crack. Mm-hmm.

And, and, um, and, and with this stuff it was just really nice. I could just kind of...

I, I put it in a little long so I could kind of bend it around a little bit, and it worked perfectly and I can nest, uh, my sleeping bag up underneath there no problem. Very cool.

And plenty of room, and it doesn't affect the brakes or anything like that. That's a good tip. So what do you run for tires, and, uh, what, what are your wheels built like?

Yeah, so, um, well, we, I, uh, I use the, the HED Yumama carbon, carbon wheels to, uh, keep the, keep the weight down.

And, uh, I was actually, to be honest with you, uh, you know, a little nervous about using them for fully loaded for like the, uh... I did Rock Hill Invitational, the ITI. Mm. And, uh, I thought, "Well, you know what?

I'm just gonna, I'm just gonna go ahead and try it, and, uh, it'll be like product testing." [laughs] And because I thought there'd be a big advantage in keeping the bike as light as possible. Sure.

And, uh, and so I loaded that thing down, you know, and, uh, and it, they worked, they worked great. I've been really happy.

I, I normally run them tubeless, but, uh, for some of the, you know, those where maybe you don't really want to screw around with that if it's really cold, then I, I, I, I'll run tubes in them.

But most of the time I'm just, I'm running it tubeless. Cool. And what kind of hubs are you using in your hubs? Yeah, we're using 907 hubs, and, uh, we've had good luck with those. They've proven to be pretty reliable.

And then, uh, I'm running, uh, some, uh, Sutlers Dillinger's on there now. And, uh, it's kind of a funny story on there because y- you know, there's a lot of variability between the tires in the weight. Mm-hmm.

And so when we, uh, got our big order of tires in there, unfortunately I was a little late getting down to the shipping and receiving area, and, uh, all the employees had already gone through with a scale and weighed every single tire, and had totally snaked all the lightest tires.

So I ended up with, uh, only, uh, the, the semi-light tires. [laughs] So the- But they're, they're still pretty light... the fabled 980 gram Dillinger's do exist. [laughs] You've seen them.

There's a, there's kind of a story there. They're, uh...

I, they had a, uh, when they were first producing that tire, they, they had a, a small run of out of spec tires that were, that were, that were actually crazy light.

They couldn't sell them, and, uh, and they offered them up to us, and, and we bought them. So, uh, there are just a few of these tires around. They feel like... I don't know how to describe it.

They feel like paper, you know? I mean, they're [laughs] they're super lightweight tires. [laughs] Can't say that they're maybe the most durable tires, but, but they are the fabled, elusive, uh, super light.

Oh, I know, I know a few people that, uh, will be calling you, begging you, s- asking you, uh, what they can- [laughs]... if they can, uh, give you their firstborn for a set of those. So, uh- Yeah...

I know- Oh, you know what? Maybe I misspoke. I have no idea what you're talking about. [laughs] So when you do your adventure racing, whose bags do you rock? Oh, man. Uh, I'm a huge fan of, uh, the Revelate stuff.

You know, Eric does a really good job, and he, uh, he's been at it, uh, a, a really long time. And,

you know, there's some other bag, uh, companies coming online now, and, uh, we, we've taken a real close look at them because w- we, we're gonna carry them on, uh, fatbikes.com. Mm-hmm.

Uh, but I'll, I'll continue to use the Revelate stuff. I just, uh, really intelligently designed. It's, you know, super bomb-proof, uh, and it, it, it kind of just fits on the frame really well.

the materials used just seem like you couldn't saw through it with, [laughs] with a, with a Johnny Rambo survival knife, you know? [laughs] Yeah. Yeah, no, it's, it's, uh, it's, it's bulletproof, for sure. Well, cool.

Competitive It's a big, gnarly tire. And I'll tell you what's unique about those tires is I got all macro up in the bead face of these tires. Ooh.

And the bead on these tires is different than any other bead that you've seen. It's precision-formed. I mean, it's like, it's like a baby's butt. That's what it takes to make a true tubeless tire.

And we're gonna have, uh, we're gonna have David Gaboury from 45NRTH on the show later this month, and he's gonna tell us the difference between his tubeless and backyard tubeless. So it, it, it's- Whoo, backyard.

The cool thing about these bikes, I think, uh, is that we've got a tire, the, the Bontrager Hodag, which I think is gonna be a good competitor in the fat bike tire market, and they have a tubeless ready rim called the Jackalope on the higher end one, while they're using the Sun Mulefut?

You know, and it's sad because it's a northern route this year, but the last time I did any of RAGBRAI, I did it with Sov and Bear, and we did, uh, three days of RAGBRAI, and were on the route for a total of four miles, I think, and were never, ever in the proper town the entire time.

That was the way to do RAGBRAI. I- It was, uh, it was the only way to do it, and I, and then I heard this year it's gonna be so short that people are gonna be riding all over the place.

there used to be a dude that was training for the Ride Across USA, and he did it every year. Yep. One- He did the, he did the same route every year, and just took off.

Like, he, he'd wound up at the end at the same time as everybody else. Yep. Awesome. Which I thought was totally ridiculous, 'cause how can you drink that much in one day?

[laughs] Well, we do need somebody to tell us how many fat bikes are on RAGBRAI, 'cause I think this is gonna be the year that it busts out and everybody's on a fat bike. That'd be stupid. Hey, Chewy- [laughs]

Yeah, you can put those on a 50 millimeter rim, and- 'Cause technically they're on a fat bike- They're super low profile... but they don't have the fat tires. [laughs] Fat rims is all that counts.

Tires are not such much. Hey, Chewy- And then maybe we could, and then maybe we could get that to be a new category in War Series races, fat bikes without fat tires.

Okay, so s- if anybody didn't know, Spinner moved to Rochester and lived with us for about three weeks, and I would get home from work and I'd be out in the shop doing something, and Spinner would get home with a six-pack and we'd have a few beers, and then we'd hit the refrigerator, and pretty much every night was the same thing.

So about three weeks into his living with us, Sue sat us both down and pretty much told Spinner, she goes, "You know what, Spinner?

I love you, and you can stay here anytime you want, but you can't live here anymore because if you do, you and Ron are going to die." Ah. And she's probably right. [laughs] Yeah.

Because, because basically drinking Rochester out of beer, we also lost dogs and everything else. We'd spend all night looking for a dog that we'd lost.

And, uh, we could go on and on about the stories that we did in three weeks. It was insane. So he's invited back to stay anytime he wants, but he's limited for sure. [laughs] Good talking to you guys.
