Dark, robust, sweet. [swallows] And dark. [swallows] Yeah. I, it's- It's a dark beer. It's a porter. If you don't know what a porter is, get your ass out of the sand. Roasted, toasted malt.

Yep, lots of roasted malt, lots of caramel malt. Little, little toffee in there, too. Oh, yeah.

Yeah, that's- There's, there's, the, what you'll do with a dark beer like this is you'll add a bunch of, like, black malt, but you also add a bunch of, like, dark caramel malt to bring out that toffee taste, and all of that malt is not fermentable sugar, so the mouth feel, that thickness you get remains- Mm...

thicker sugar. It does, it's got lingering qualities to it. Lingering. Um, yeah, the yeast can't eat that sugar, so it sits around in the beer and gives it that syrupy-ish mouth feel.

This is a little hoppier than a traditional porter- No, it's not... seems like. I'm- Seems hoppy-ish. What's the ABV on this? 5%. 5.5, I believe. Yep, 5 and a half. By liberal h- okay, it does say on the label, folks.

Yep, Colin's reading the label again here. [laughs] Its multi profile is uniquely well-balanced by liberal hopping for its style, so sure, maybe it is hoppy. [laughs] All right.

Hello. Hey, good to have you guys on the show at s- such short notice. I called Pete last night and said, "Hey, would you like to be on the show?" And he said, "Absolutely." Awesome. Well, uh, yeah.

So Pete is an awesome photographer. Thank you. Uh, but yeah, w- it's nice being, uh, neighbors, living in River West. Uh, it's an easy ride down the block, so happy to be here.

Carlos is a River Westite as well, and- Yeah. We've got Colin sitting here shotgun temporarily. Yo. So, um- [laughs] And JK Livin'- So-... just for snorts and- [laughs]... snorts and boops.

So the reason that we asked Pete to show up is because this Flavor Cycle thing is a really cool, uh, Milwaukee-based business, and I just wanted Pete to talk a little bit about what Flavor Cycle is.

Flavor Cycle is basically a delivery service for local restaurants, um, and we do it all on our bicycles.

There's a crew of about 18 of us right now, but probably hard to count now, but, uh, close to 40 restaurants that we're delivering for. And this is a year-round thing. This isn't just- Oh, yeah, last winter sucked...

fair weather- Yeah. Yeah. [laughs] Last winter sucked. It just never ended. Yeah, last winter we had a record winter for snowfall, and- Oh... it, it snowed. Cold. For the fatbike people out there, it was awesome. Right.

It was. [laughs] Yeah, and then the ice storm nights where the whole city is just under two inches of sh- sheet ice, um- Yeah, I forgot about that. Yeah, there, there were some good times. It was.

But you know, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, and- [laughs] That's what they say. I'm not sure it's true. I wiped out five times that storm. On the- That's right. You were-... one day. Yeah.

Uh, the last one really hurt. Were you on a, were you on a fatbike or not? The first ones were really fun. I, like, slid, like, 20 feet. You know, it was fun.

The last time, I landed right on my elbow, and it hurt for, like, about three weeks. Were you riding a fatbike that day? I was not. Okay. I know you've ridden fat- I should have been.

Yeah, I know you've ridden fatbikes a little bit. You've, uh, taken some out there on routes. And most of the guys ride, uh, road bikes or, uh, fast bikes because time is of the essence. But in certain conditions...

Yeah, in certain conditions, the fatbike is probably the fastest thing out there in snow. There was a couple days where I would've craved a fatbike. [laughs] Yes.

Well, it's, for you guys that don't know what, uh, Pete rides, he normally rides what they call a bullet, which is a really cool cargo bike.

And, uh, a lot of the other guys ride fixed gears or single-speed m- road bikes, but, uh- Or geared road bikes with disc brakes- Yeah... like Roommate. That's what- There you go. Yeah, that's, that's...

But these are guys that love bike riding, that's for sure. Yeah, th- I mean, there's a wide assortment of bikes that we use.

Um, but yeah, bottom line is, is everybody who is involved with this whole delivery thing, uh, are bike nuts anyway, you know? Excellent. So at 40 below, how do you get the pizza there hot still?

It's fricking hot, and then they have, uh- [laughs]... hot bags which keep 'em hot. And, and, you know, we're fast. So e- there's nothing that's out in the elements- Yeah... more than, like, 15 minutes. Nice.

Yeah, you know, they can do it m- m- more quickly than a car a lot of times, so you know. Answer is, I'm a volcano. [laughs] [laughs] Sorry.

S- so one of the interesting things I found when talking to the guys that work for Flavor Cycle is they all have nicknames. Is that for- Well, we're spices. Right. Yeah. You're spicy. They're spicy. I'm Basil.

Uh, Carlos is, uh- I'm Rosemary... Rosemary. Rosemary. Then there's Thyme- Not Razors. Cayenne. People call me Razors 'cause I was super short. Cinnamon. Is Cinnamon still with you guys? Cinnamon's still around.

Cinnamon's still around. Yep. Friends of mine, too. Thyme. What's Huber's spice? Huber was Wa- Huber's Wasabi... Wasabi, yep. Oh. Wasabi. Is that a spice? Yeah. Yeah. Huber's spicy. So- So-...

so we use two-way radio app, and that's, like, our call signs. Right. Yeah, you use, uh, Zello? We use Zello, yeah. So that's how y'all keep in touch to know where to go next, and- Yes, it's-...

who's available to pick up at a certain spot in the town. It's the coolest thing ever, yeah. Works good for mountain bike road trips, too, if you don't wanna call the person in the other car a million frigging times.

Yeah, we used it during the River West 24 last year to figure out where the checkpoints were slow. So it's, like, check... or, or a bonus checkpoint is, uh... it's not busy right now.

Go to the bonus checkpoint so you're not waiting in line. Yep. Yeah, it was a good thing. You can set up your own, uh, channel- Yes... so that it's only the people you invite that can hear what you're doing.

Yeah, it's a really cool app. So, um, besides doing, uh, Flavor Cycle, you also do a lot of work with the Bike Federation- Uh, yeah, I'm, uh-... of Wisconsin. Yeah. I, I do what I can.

I help, um, I, I launched their magazine, uh- It's a sweet magazine... with Dave Soboleski. Worked really hard with that with them. Went on a couple road trips for sort of reportage kind of stuff.

Yeah, Bike Fed is fantastic. I always support them whenever I can. Yeah, Dave is a talented person. Oh, yeah. Good photographer, just like Pete. Pete's an awesome photographer, bro.

I can't tell you that there's a better bike magazine for a, an, an organization like the Bike Fed than the one you guys put out. Thanks. It's really- Yeah... high quality.

Um, in the olden days, back what, five, four years ago, Pete did a magazine called Cog, which if you've been around a lot, was such high quality.

Uh, it, it was awesome, and I think a lot of that shows in the Bike Fed magazine. Thank you, yeah. Learned a lot. Well, cool, guys. Don't you guys have work or something to do? Yeah.

[laughs] We're like, "Wow, I'm working on some sort of year-long sponsorship cohabitation with the donuts every, every show, donuts and beer delivery." They're good donuts, too, yeah. Yeah.

W- one other just point that they brought up about, uh, the restaurants they work with is these are all local restaurants. They're not gonna deliver a McDonald's, uh, you know, Happy Meal for you. No, yeah.

They work with, uh, independent, local restaurants and give them an option to get this stuff around, so I think that's- It's a great community. Um, you know, uh, this started, people were friends.

Um, there's people that have come in that I've never, uh, met before, then they're like, "Hey, I wanna ride for you guys." Okay, cool. So they get involved, they become part of this little community.

A couple months later, they're moving in together, you know, roommates and stuff. Uh, some of the guys are dating girls from the restaurants. It's like this- [laughs] Woo!

Guys, if you wanna pick up waitresses, join the FlavorCycle- Yeah... 'cause you're gonna meet 'em all. Uh, yeah, there's- Ride into Colin's detention. [laughs] Want some, want some ride for it now.
