Weekly Dose of Phat, show number 30 for November 14th, 2014.
0:06
[upbeat music] From the Redwood Forest to the Nut Factory Studio in River West, Wisconsin, it's the Weekly Dose of Phat Radio Hour with your hosts, Sven Hammer and Gomez Alejandro Santana Diago.
0:37
Are you going first this week? I am the wind. [laughs] And you are the sky. Do you see how I just- This is Phat Bike Radio... jammed it right in there? And- [laughs]...
0:46
joining us in the studio today is the man with the plan and an outstretched hand, Mr. JK Living, ladies and gentlemen. Yeah. It's my pleasure- This is Diago JK... to announce you to Mr.
0:59
Chris Daisy and the all-electric Zion Cyclery Band. Hey, guys.
1:06
[upbeat music] Our show is sponsored by the new Surly t-shirt that says, "Seriously," on the front, with no vowels except Y, that little shit, which is only a vowel when it wants to be.
1:18
Learn more about bikes and freedom at Surly Bikes. Dot com. Freedom! [laughs] Freedom. [laughs] So what's on the- It's not overrated, folks... fabulous Freedom Radio program today, Freedom Senor Living Freedom?
1:34
Well, on this week's show we have the beer and interweb shaman, the Gomez you- It's me... have been promising for the last few weeks, Mr. Julio.com. Bing.
1:44
[laughs] You- We interview Global- You should put pings in a good spot. [laughs] We interview Global Fat Bike Summit's s- Cary Sillquist. Yeah. We... [laughs] Did we get snow too? [laughs] Snow, yes. We got lots of snow.
1:58
Let the dancing of the snows begin. Then we have Wild Wings. We were gonna have a story about a Canadian fat bike, but it got hung up in customs. Beyond the Canadian fat bike, we have mi amigo, Julio.com.
2:14
He's, uh, he's finally here. He's looking, uh- In person. Nice haircut, Julio. [laughs] My haircut today? I did say- Yeah. Yeah. [laughs] Nobody said anything. I shaved just for this occasion. Is it...
2:25
Did you go to the one where all the girls g- get your beer and then cut your hair and stuff? You know, I- That's why you need to go to Julio.com. [laughs] Of course. Surly. My hair is sponsored by Julio.com.
2:36
Sur- Surly- ly. [laughs] Surly. I have no Y for you today. Julio's gonna be our beer pharmacist and also host a segment about the wisdom of the interwebs. Kind of an oxymoron, isn't it? I agree, it is.
2:49
[laughs] Something along the lines of the stupidest things that you read on the forums each episode? Yeah, something like that.
2:55
Well, I'll say, guys, it's my privilege and my honor, I think, to be here sharing these mics with you. I'll do my- There's a mic right there. [laughs] Yeah, those are the mics. Sharing mics. Sharing. Michael's switching.
3:05
And I will do my best to serve the greater good of the Fat Bike podcast listeners everywhere. It's not a podcast, it's a radio show. [laughs] Podcast, radio show. Chrome circle. [laughs] Chrome circle.
3:16
No, you can fucking start on the round circles. First, your... Julio's first beer segment. Ca- ka- cha. All right, bring it on.
3:23
So for this week's Fat-Bike.com beer selection, we have Revolution Brewing's Unsessionable Imperial IPA, or some would call it a double. This is a massive 10% beer, folks. And- 10%... 10% indeed. Dude.
3:39
[laughs] To those who such things matter, it's got a 99 rating on Beer Advocate, and it's only been out for a couple... like, like a couple months. It's got six hop varieties.
3:48
So they paid all those reviewers to review it? They did. [laughs] Six hop varieties including Centennial, Citrus, Chinook, Amarillo, Galaxy and Cascade. That's a lot of hops.
3:58
Did you hear they landed a satellite on a comet today? I did. My son and I talked about it. For crying out loud. Pretty crazy. Well, that- Galax- galaxy... that's why the galaxy got me thinking about satellites.
4:06
Satellites got me thinking about comets. Five, 500 mile- And I gotta do something while I'm pouring my beer, so.
4:10
So I gotta preface this by saying that this is possibly one of the best new to me beers I've had in the last s- six months, maybe a year. So if you don't like it, you can all fuck the fuck off.
4:20
[laughs] So, but first- Julio has spoken. [laughs] And yes, you barbarians, we're gonna drink this out of a glass. I, I need- You're not, you're not gonna ruin this like you did Furious a couple weeks ago.
4:30
I, I, I've just poured mine, and it's- I've just poured mine, and it's got lots of heat. Trousers. Hold on. [laughs] Look at the head on that kid. It's the size of a planet. [laughs] Spittle couple quick pointing paws.
4:43
[laughs] Julio, Julio broke his tab off. Oh. He's- This happens sometimes... getting serious. I'm, I'm excited to drink this beer, folks. So what do you do after you pour it in a glass? You gotta smell it.
4:51
Oh my God, I just snorted it. [laughs] 'Cause you have to- Love those. [coughs] Take a big smell. It does not smell like cat piss. It does not smell like cat piss. [laughs] Like other possible fluffer beer did.
5:03
Sign our waiver. It's called catty. Take a big smell. Apricots. Right off the bat- Are there- Bring the fucking apricots. [laughs] Right off the bat, you get hit in the face with the hops. It's just an awesome aroma.
5:17
Now, boys, we drink. Cheers. Let's get to the good part finally. Boys. All this smelling- Cheers... and talking about, time to drink. [laughs] That's frigging delicious, dude. I'm getting- Yeah...
5:28
all kinds of, like, fruity flavors. That's right, guys. It's a massive amount of hops in this beer. Extremely well-balanced. And if it weren't for the high ABV, it would indeed be very sessionable. It's not- Yeah...
5:40
bitter like we were just... like our fluffer beer was. [laughs] No, not like the fluffer beer. Yeah. But hey- The fluffer beer was a little-... despite that high ABV, its booziness is kept fairly well in check.
5:49
So don't be fooled, gents. This is a creeper. Just gotta ride it off. I thought that was something- You gotta run around for like two miles to- Right, to burn some of that off... to burn off some of it.
5:57
So you get a lot of bitterness. [laughs] It's never astringent. It's really complex with all those hops, almost a juiciness to it.
6:03
You're gonna get pine, you're gonna get citrus, and yes, Gomez, Gomez, there's your motherfucking grapefruit. [laughs] Little passion fruit. It smells good. Little bit of- It's all mixed together...
6:12
sometimes I get, sometimes I get some pear. It's amazing. Absolutely no apricot. [laughs]It's a nice- Mango, pear... dry Christmas on the tongue. Christmas? Christmas. Christmas on your tongue.
6:23
Chri- Christmas is like pine, so that would make sense. It's coming, sure. [laughs] It's very smooth malt balance, a little sweetness on the backside. It's kinda almost a, like a faint honey.
6:31
So what can we cut it with to make it more sessionable? 'Cause I'd drink this all day long. [laughs] You're just gonna have to pace yourself, my friend.
6:38
[laughs] The Revolution says this is the most drinkable Imperial IPA you'll ever have. I've got to agree. Everyone I know that's tried this beer has the same reaction, "Damn, that's good."
6:47
For an Imperial IPA, it's a really refreshing beer, and it has a- [clears throat]... added bike-friendly bonus. It comes in cans. Right? Ooh, cans. Yeah. Kind of a- Package...
6:56
prerequisite for taking a beer with you on a beach ride. Yeah. It can't be a bottle, honestly. True. Yeah, but however- Oh, come on... although breaking bot- [laughs] Breaking bottles on rocks is cool though.
7:05
Make big noise. I don't know, man. Been on a lot of rides with bottles of beer. But as you guys know- But in cans...
7:11
you probably don't wanna drink too many of these during a ride, and of course, it's best out of a glass. But if someone- Barbarians.
7:17
Yeah, but if someone handed me one of these on the trail, I, I wouldn't turn 'em down, actually. I'd, I'd probably give 'em a big hug. So- You'd give a lot of things hugs... what do you guys think?
7:25
I think it's really good. Good outdoorjulio.com beer? Sure is. I'm a little concerned about the actual 10% portion [laughs] of the equation- [laughs]... because I would love to, um- There's plenty more-...
7:34
be a little more aggressive about drinking it than would probably make prudent sense. I could cut it with a PBR, I think. Oh. Like, half PBR, half this. What would you call that?
7:44
[laughs] I'm gonna stab you in the neck is what I'm gonna call it. [laughs] Stab you- Get a s- stab you, stab you in the neck... stab you in the neck ale. [laughs] Well, we're gonna brew it next time.
7:55
Yeah, we should- Gomez, what do you think? Well, it... I'm the tender-tongued one out of the- I know... out of the group that- Sensitive flower... you know, fa- [laughs] I'm the sensitive flower.
8:04
Especially if I'm a toad And this is actually not too bitter for me. I think that it's a... really, if you're- No, not bitter at all...
8:10
if you're queasy about trying an IPA, always ask to drink it out of a glass 'cause it changes the beer completely, and, uh- Especially when it smells like catfish...
8:19
this is, this is, those mango and pear flavors is what really came to the front for me. And the grapefruit. You've long been yearning grapefruit. Yeah.
8:26
The grapefruit on the, on the, on the smell- It's like, it's like an everlasting Gobstopper... but not on the taste... it keeps changing and giving you different flavors. It hangs on the tongue. Yeah.
8:33
Kind of a grapefruit rind. And really the... I didn't taste that much bitter at all. It is, it was more a sweet, tart flavor of- Yeah... true mango tropical awesomeness.
8:45
That's lot, lot of the citra, a lot of the galaxy coming through for you. That's those hops all playing very nicely together. How about you, JK? What'd you think of this beer? I liked it.
8:54
I just, I, I was just like, "Look." [laughs] I liked it. I liked it. [laughs] No, I know. I could, I could see myself drinking a good handful of these, but- Right?... dangerously so.
9:06
[laughs] I like the idea of putting a couple miles in between 'em. Yeah. You can burn 'em off a little bit. For sure. You just- Yeah, definitely... you just have to ride a little further. Right.
9:13
[laughs] Well, I'm glad to hear it, boys. I'm glad you enjoyed my, my first direct contribution to this fine program. Yeah, fine.
9:21
[laughs] Well, we'll be back with Gary Shoquist, the Director of Fun at the Global Fat Bike Summit in Jackson Hole, Y La Gran Titans of Wyoming, and a word from our newest sponsor of the Weekly Dose of Fat, Club Ride.
9:35
Hi, this is Paul Ellis from Pent Cycling, and our company dogs listen to Sven and Gomez on Fat Bike Radio. These dogs howl at Gomez like he's our mailman.
9:45
Sven's wardrobe on today's show is provided by Club Ride of Sun Valley. [whistles] Damn, buddy. Mm.
9:53
Club Ride brings fashion radness with warmth from layers of technical cycling attire that makes sense from the trail head to the town pub. I feel like a cowboy. Simmer down there, JK. Let him go, Sven.
10:07
A man needs to go lumberjack now and again. Uh-oh, boys. I think he's going lumbersexual. I feel like a cowboy. [laughs] Oh, that's the fucking way she goes, boys. Way she goes.
10:20
You're tuned, you're tuned to Fat Bike Radio, Fat Bike Radio, Fat Bike Radio. Hey, welcome back to the show. We've got Gary Shoquist on the line.
10:30
He is the, uh, director of the Global Fat Bike Summit, uh, and he's been doing advocacy stuff for many, many years, so we thought we'd, uh, we'd talk a bit to him about the Global Fat Bike Summit and advocacy in general.
10:43
Welcome to the show, Gary. Hey, Gary. Hey, how you doing? Thank you. Yeah, good to have you on the show.
10:49
Uh, you know, a guy like you that, uh, puts his, uh, his energy into helping everybody else get access to places i- is just such a, a great thing for the community as a whole.
10:59
You've been doing this for an awful long time. How did you get your start in it?
11:02
What was kind of the genesis of your, uh, involvement in mountain bike advocacy in the beginning and now fat bike advocacy, you know, recently?
11:11
In 1990, I got my first mountain bike, and the place that I started to ride was gonna be closed, and I, I got pissed.
11:18
I, I decided to act, and I put together a little group of people, and we presented an alternative plan, and it worked. It was called Terra Solts in Burnsville.
11:27
And then other places started to, to call me to help with this kind of thing, and I, I helped put together the Minnesota Off-Road Cyclists.
11:33
And then we just continued to build mountain bike trails, and one thing led to another.
11:38
And then, uh, when I went to work for QBP in 1998, I never guessed that I would be working on fat bike stuff, but, you know, in 2005 when the Pugsley was introduced, all of a sudden I thought, "You know, we're gonna go through the same struggle here," right?
11:51
For sure. We're gonna need to know where to ride and where not to ride, and so it's, that- that's really how the Fat Bike Summit started.
11:58
You've been doing the Fat Bike Summit now for, uh, is this, this is the fourth one. Um- Fourth one, yep... what, what's, what's changed even in that four short years?
12:07
I know, um, you know, you're getting land use managers and park rangers and a lot of public land people and just a whole slew of people that are, uh, have access to the land that we wanna ride on.
12:19
Uh, w- what do you see new now in the, in the time that you've been doing this? Well, first of all, there's, there's still, uh, a notion within a lot of land managers that fat bikes are a fad.
12:30
Uh, and so we, we wanna dispel that. We wanna, you know, tell these people this is the real deal. You look at the demographics, it's just gonna continue. All the manufacturers are involved now.
12:39
Al- almost every manufacturer of inner bikes has a fat bike or a fat bike to display their products. And so it's not a fad, it's gonna stay.
12:47
The second thing is I think we're seeing an evolution where at first people are thinking, "Okay, in the winter maybe I could ride on Nordic trails."
12:54
And some places like Grand Teton and others are saying, "Yeah, we, we can make that work."
12:58
The next step, and this is what we're gonna talk about at the summit, is where places like the Curt Gowdy State Park in Wyoming is actually gonna build, uh, four and a half miles of single track, groomed single track for fat bikes.
13:11
That's- And of course, that's a great thing. Yeah. And so we just wanna try and keep that kind of thing going.
13:15
I was actually, uh, through, um, Cheyenne this past summer and talked to a couple of the guys at the local shop there, and they did mention that Curt Gowdy area was gonna have something specific for fat bikes.
13:26
That's really great to hear. Yeah. That's very cool.
13:29
With the, uh, the summit, uh, in the past it's been kind of a Q branded thing where, uh, a lot of the, the brands that, that Quality, uh, produces have been kind of the focus.
13:40
This year you're opening it up kind of a big tent for everybody that does fat bike stuff. Yeah. Um, how's that being received? Um, pretty well actually.
13:48
I, I'm really pleased because, um, you know, our, our brands are great at QBP, but this is a much bigger effort and, and we need the major players involved. And so I'm so happy Trek is involved.
14:00
Borealis just came on board. Durango Bike Company just came on board. We're actively seeking others to be there. We're talking to Ellsworth.
14:07
We, we want as many manufacturers as possible because that's an important message to land managers that, that, you know, this is an industry-wide thing, and it helps reinforce that notion it's not a fad.
14:17
It's just gonna continue. And so, um, I, I just want as many manufacturers and companies represented, uh, at our summit as possible.
14:25
If there's, uh, industry guys listening to the show, and I know there are, uh, if they wanna get ahold of you to discuss being a, a part of the show, how can they do that?
14:34
Uh, well, they can certainly, they can go to, uh, fatbikessummit.com. That's the website, uh, we've put up. They can call me or contact me at QBP.
14:43
Uh, my QBP email address is just garys, as in Sam, @qbp.com, and, uh, I'll send them any kind of information that they, that they need. We just really encourage everybody to take this opportunity to think about it.
14:56
This is a really unique event. It combines access issues with really w- fun riding opportunities. Uh, we're gonna do a short track race. I mean, how fun is that gonna be?
15:05
[laughs] A short track race under the lights on fat bikes. Yeah. It's gonna be awesome. Some of my, some, some of my favorite races are short tracks. We're also gonna do... Go ahead.
15:11
Gonna say some of our favorite kind of racing is short track. The, uh, just the quick action is really fun. Yeah, I think so too.
15:18
You know, you're out there with a bunch of your buddies, and, uh, it's all elbows and knees and who can get the line. And afterward you can all just laugh about it, have a beer, and, and, uh, relive it.
15:27
So I think it's, uh, I think it's really gonna be fun.
15:29
We're also gonna do an industry ride, and so this is kind of cool too because I always think about, you know, people who are, who buy fat bikes and they wanna ask a question like, "Why is this fat bike this way?
15:40
Why, why is it, you know, so many millimeters, or why is the geometry this way, or why..." Well, at our deal you're gonna be able to ride alongside the people who actually manufacture the bikes.
15:49
They, they design them, they engineer them. They love them. They're passionate about it. And so you get a chance to ride alongside them and ask about that. I think that's a pretty cool deal.
15:57
So the Global Fat Bike Summit's gonna be in Jackson Hole. What are the dates it's running? Uh, it's January 23 through 25. Okay, 2015. Right. Yeah. Well, I know I'll be out there. Uh, I- [laughs] Great. Yeah.
16:10
I, I'm looking forward to it. Uh, as soon as I heard it was in Jackson Hole I was definitely like, "Yep, I'll go." [laughs] Hey, Gary, this is Gomez.
16:18
Uh, you had mentioned that there was going to be a, a guided ride into one of the national parks or one of the national forests- Yeah... during the summit? Yeah.
16:28
You know, when, when, uh, Scotty Fitzgerald from Fitzgerald Bicycles and I started this, uh, back in 2012, the goal was to get fat bike access into national parks like Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park.
16:41
Right now they're prohibited because they're technically a wheeled vehicle. And, and so we started on this, uh, uh, pursuit to try and overturn that or figure out a way to overcome that.
16:53
And that's why we're actually in Jackson Hole, because there is a new superintendent of the national park at Grand Teton National Park, and so this is a great opportunity.
17:00
Superintendents have the ability to oversee different prohibitions, and if they decide they like something, they can actually make it happen in their national park. And so we have a great opportunity to do that.
17:13
That's really why we're in Jackson this year. So the, the Global Fat Bike Summit, uh, has mostly been in snow areas like, you know, either the Rockies or in the Midwest here up in Northern Wisconsin.
17:25
Ha- is there any- Yeah... kind of, um, any kind of push to do, uh, any kind of a beach oriented, uh, fat bike summit? Uh, there's a lot of, you know, shoreline access issues just like there are with everywhere else.
17:37
Um, have you guys given any thought to that? Yeah, we have a little, um... We've decided, uh, you know, for now the, the Jackson Hole deal is gonna focus on winter use.
17:46
But certainly as we see more, uh, dual suspension fat bikes being introduced, more products, um, we're probably gonna get into that area too.
17:54
You know, I'm, I'm driven partly by our product at QBP, and, uh, and they're waiting sort of to see how this dual suspension thing works out, whether the manufacturers are involved.
18:05
But if, if they ask me to get involved, I, I certainly will get involved.
18:08
There are a lot of the same lessons and, uh, strategies in play, and you just need, want to talk to at the right levels and, and, uh, work out the access issues.
18:17
Well, we could sure host a beach one here in, uh, Wisconsin I think. Yeah. Maybe that's the- Yeah, I think we could... something that we can talk.
18:23
I think so too, but, uh, maybe we could do a Great Lakes, uh, Fat Bike Summit and focus on the beach opportunities.
18:29
Yeah, we would like that because that's something that we do a lot of, and we've been- We've been proponents of and have ideas about what restrictions make sense and, uh, et cetera, so. Yeah. Yeah. Well, very good, Gary.
18:44
It's been good having you on the show. Thanks for sharing, uh, information about the summit, and, uh, look forward to seeing you out there in a couple of months. All right, good enough. Thanks, guys.
18:53
All right, take care. Thanks for being on the show. Have a good one. Bye bye. All right, thanks. Bye bye. You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio.
19:03
[whistles] This is your weekly dose of fat. Welcome back to the radio program, ladies and gentlemen.
19:21
Hey, one of our Milwaukee fat bike tribe, our friend Tom Lays, got hit by a car this week. Wow, man. Damn. He's had some bad luck lately. Broke his leg and- Yeah, he- Now he got hit by a car...
19:32
he broke his leg or foot in, in the Sustina 100. Tom's a pretty accomplished, uh, ultra racer. Bone breaker. For real, yeah. And bone breaker, yeah. Yes. [laughs] He's finished the Arrowhead 130- one...
19:43
What is that, 135? 135, yep. Trying to search for that number. W- that 135, 136, whatever it is. Somewhere in there. Between 134 and 136. A whole lot of miles. In there.
19:53
Yeah, Tom's a great guy, and it's, uh, his collarbone collar blown, got blown. [laughs] Collar blown. Yeah, collar bone blown. Yeah, his collarbone's dislocated. He got knocked unconscious.
20:02
He doesn't remember anything about what happened, so healing vibes out to you, Tom. Thank you. Yeah. Good job. Good luck, man. I mean, good luck. [laughs] Get well. I just saw him last week. We had a beer at, uh, Tonic.
20:13
Yeah, Tonic. He was out doing hills. And did he get hit by a car? Yeah, and Tom's a- No, he, he- Tom's an old guy like me. Right. No, yeah, we just met up with him. Old and stupid. He was riding, and we had a beer- Oh...
20:23
and then he went on his way, so he was looking good then. [upbeat rock music] When it comes to fat bikes, Zion Cyclery in Zion, Illinois, has you covered.
20:38
They stock fatties from Surly, Salsa, 907, Borealis, and Trek, as well as everything from 45 NRTH.
20:47
The staff is friendly, the mechanics are top-notch, and they stock the largest selection of fat bikes in the Chicago-Milwaukee area. There's a mountain bike park and some great beach riding in Zion, so come.
20:59
Make a day of it. Call 847-746-2200 or visit zioncyclery.com. Hey, welcome back to the radio program. Radio.
21:16
[laughs] I, I can't get that out of my head. We just... I had that a few weeks ago, the Mexican radio thing going on. [laughs] On, on, uh, fat bike radio. Radio. I think you brought it up even. Let's jam into that.
21:27
I think we should probably- I'm on a fat bike. Radio. Radio. Radio. I think we should probably do a whole bit about that, a whole song. We should just do it 'cause- Chris Daisy-... Chris can do the keyboards...
21:38
and the Zion Cyclery Orchestra. Chris will do the keys. They're, they're all out smoking a cigarette at the moment.
21:43
[laughs] Did you see Chris Daisy threw all of his, uh, Chicago Bears stuff in the garbage after that game last week? Oh, man. How about them Bears? I don't even watch football. Right?
21:51
[laughs] I could give two fucks about all that. Yeah, that's what a- It's really wet for me... that's what a real Bear fan would say. [laughs] Oh. [laughs] Oh. Ay caramba.
21:58
All right, the Packers are, you know, doing pretty well against those guys. I seriously don't watch football. [laughs] Let's not digress into the- Okay, don't admit, don't admit that here on man radio.
22:06
[laughs] This is, this is all men. Hey, how about synchronized swimming? Yeah. Actually, that's pretty good, too. You know, you gotta fill your sports 24 hours a day, so you might as well watch this.
22:16
[laughs] We have a new segment on the Weekly Dose of Fat. Do tell. Julio.com. Julio.com. He's a- Do you have that registered, or does it actually go [laughs] somewhere else? No, you should...
22:29
Y- all you listen- listeners should check that out. Check out Julio.com. It's fashionable. [laughs] Julio.com. To the above all else, I am unfashionable. He spells his D-O-T out, though. It's julio.com. D-O-T com.
22:41
So anyway- Trademark... Julio, he's our man that has the pulse of the interwebs, and you know, we've, we've given him a little, uh, editorial leeway here to, uh, point out perhaps some weaknesses- False pause perhaps...
22:58
or maybe- There are some weaknesses out there... hidden genius- Hidden genius... in what's out there on the interwebs... well, I, I, I gotta tell you, when we were, uh- Savant...
23:04
when we were talk- before the show when we were talking about this segment, I really thought [laughs] that I needed to make a video about one of the portions we [laughs] decided not to do.
23:13
But I'm gonna make a video about that. S- so we're running with this one. Yeah. In fact, we could do it with your bike. Sure. [laughs] I'm not saying we have to talk about that.
23:22
I think you've got way better ideas, but- I got better ideas. Yeah.
23:24
So listen, as I cruise the highways and byways of the internet, I notice things, some pretty interesting, some intriguing, but some of it just baffles me in its sheer stupidity.
23:35
And of course, the cycling realm is not immune to the stupidity. Stupid is as stupid does. The stupid does on the internet, especially at such popular internet hangouts as, like, MTBR and the Facebooks.
23:46
Are those- We're not calling anybody out here. [laughs] Those things, that s- those things aren't even real. Lots of, lots of fat bikers- Those are just popular places... the fat bikers congregate there...
23:54
stupidity exists actually everywhere, inside of us all just like Santa Claus. Well, it takes a, it takes a real, uh, you know, strong person to let the stupidity out and just go with it. It does.
24:04
Which is obviously why we're doing this show. [laughs] And the internet seems to really foster that feeling in people. It breeds there like a virus.
24:11
Uh, case in point, we're doing this radio show [laughs] on the internet. Santa Claus. Oh, Samurai Radio Show is- You know, you know what I can say, though?
24:19
We've evolved from the Mountain Beer and the Facebook, and now we do our own radio show. Okay, so with that, to help me cope with all the stupidity and add balance to my life- [laughs]...
24:28
I'm going to thank- Oh my God, sorry... the right feeder- Are you gonna sneeze or-... on this very program. Small. But a quick disclaimer.
24:34
If one of our listeners happens to be the perpetrator of this offense- We're sorry... I'm actually kind of sorry- No, we're not. [laughs]...
24:40
if you're offended, but not really But really- We're not gonna tell people they're [laughs] stupid- Why would you post such stupid shit?... without holding [laughs] them accountable.
24:47
Next time, next time do a little digging on the internet, because there's a good chance it's been asked before, or- That's right, spend more time [laughs] on the internet. Yeah.
24:54
Or do some internal social searching, and you might be able to avoid this kind of embarrassment. [laughs] I'm- So-... my head's getting spinny. [laughs] So- [laughs]... reel it in, boys. [laughs] Okay, sure.
25:08
So for this week's I Can't Believe I Saw This On The Internet, put it, to put it nicely, I saw on a certain internet site this past week somebody who wanted everybody to compare their fat bike to a truck.
25:20
[laughs] Now, seriously- Get out of here... do you have that little going on in your life? [clears throat] [laughs] Compare your fat bike to a truck. Well, you know, it's kind of similar.
25:29
So you want, you wanted people to look at it and say, "Wow, I picture my truck as a Ford F-150," and put pictures up of it. Go ride your bike. [laughs] I, I don't know. Really? That would be a good thing.
25:42
Go ride your bike. Hey, man, I got a truck and a bike too. You can- Hey, I can do the internet. Yeah. You can do both. You can drive your truck somewhere and then [laughs] ride your bike out of it.
25:52
My favorite out of all of it, though, 'cause it, people actually did reply to this, 'cause it is the internet, somebody put a picture up of the Wienermobile. [laughs] That's classic.
25:59
Like one of the actual Oscar Mayer hot dog Wienermobiles? The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile. Those things are cool. We used to rustproof those when I was a Ziebart guy way back in the way olden days. Ziebart.
26:09
Yeah, we'd do the frames. Everybody's got a Wienermobile story. Is that like, is that like Big-O? No, it's under, you know, on, undercoating. Well, I can tell you about it. Yeah, it's rustproofing. Little Oscar.
26:16
Kind of like, uh- A 1982 Toyota Camry wagon... probably rusted- Corolla wagon, Ziebarted on the bottom, and then the shit rusted out. [laughs] They had a good warranty, though. They'd fix stuff.
26:26
[laughs] But it's just like JP Weigel. There, let's bring us back- It's like JP Weigel and your steel frame... to the realm of reality here, boys. Or you JP Weigel your steel frame. [laughs] I will Weigel your frame.
26:34
Oh, no, I won't. [sighs] So yeah. Oh, by the way, um [bell ringing] Oh, beer stop. Beer stop. Yeah, it's, it's getting to be time to refresh this and, uh- Round two with that 10% ABV... kind of cool this.
26:50
I want to cool it off a little bit with another one right out of the pack. Wait, no, no, no, you wanted a bigger one. I want to cool it off. [laughs] Can. You did this to us. He's official.
27:01
[laughs] He's now official fat-bike.com glasses. Whoa. Oh. You know what? Can hold more than one beer.
27:08
I can, uh, tell you that if you let this sit in your mouth for a while after you take a swallow, I mean, and don't drink it again and just quaff it, it does kind of evolve. It does.
27:18
It's an interesting- The aromas develop. So you like it better when it's warming up, too? Uh, warming up. It was a little cold, I think, when we poured it. It's not cellar temperature. A little above cellar for this one.
27:28
Hm. But- I like my beer at 33 degrees, maybe 32 if I can get her down there. Get her down there. Yeah, this is- No, this is tasty... this is gonna be- I'm gonna burp, though, too. Oh. That's super delicious. Mm.
27:40
I'm glad you like it, and I hope I don't let you guys down in the future. Oh, shut up. [laughs] We got some good beer. I actually have several on deck.
27:47
And by the way, if, if you compare your fat bike to a truck, kind of an idiot, right? [laughs] You got too much time on your hands. Sometimes, see, what else would you compare your fat bike to?
27:56
Well, you know, maybe- Like, would you compare it to a- Maybe I just-... a goat?... am, I'm a little bit like- Another bike... I've taken- Another bike... pictures of my bike and my truck- An animal... together.
28:03
[laughs] A fantastic lady animal. An animal. What, what, what animal does my fat bike, my, my fat bike represent? What animal? It's your spirit animal. What's my inner animal? [laughs] My bike's your inner animal?
28:13
I'll tell you what, it's a belly full of three tacos and some margaritas. I, I- These posts just could be cries for help. [laughs] It's all cries for help. Please, please talk to me. What did people do- I'm a person...
28:23
before the internet? Anyway, dudes. Starting in December, call in and win. Yeah, so we're gonna try and take some, uh, calls from our three listeners. So- Hope we didn't piss any of them off tonight. Uh- [laughs]...
28:39
if you're still out there, we'd like you to call in. Starting in December, we're gonna give you a phone number at a certain time, Wednesday nights, you know? True that.
28:48
We're doing the show on Wednesdays at, uh- And beer, and a call-in. Yeah, we're doing it at 7:00 PM Central Time is our, is our, basically the time we start doing the show.
28:57
So that would be 8:00 PM, seven, six, five- We gotta-... on the, 5 on the West Coast. But how- So how's it gonna work? Not exactly sure.
29:08
So here's- People are just gonna send in a question, we're gonna figure it out, and- Oh, that way. You mean the actual... Okay, not the technology aspect.
29:13
We, we run all of our technologies on voodoo and, and ancient gnome magic. Yeah, nobody needs to know the technologies. In a oak tree. Is that like the Aztecs?
29:21
How it's gonna work is they'll call in, and we'll answer questions. Bam. Simple. It's simple. Bam. Are you fucking Infocom? [laughs] Aztecs and- There we go. [laughs] No, all we do now- What do we do now? Turkey.
29:33
[laughs] I'll just start using tape, mix, and rubber bands and MacGyver it until we get to the voodoo. Potatoes? French fries. Oh, no. That one, [laughs] yeah, we're fist pumping in here, people. All right.
29:46
I think maybe it's the 10% ABV of this beer. [laughs] Sven has a story about the Global Fat Bike Summit. I do? No, Art's Fat Bike Birky after party. Do I have a story [laughs] about that?
29:58
I heard there's gonna be wood-fired pizza. [laughs] Come on, people. This is not television. You can't just give a look like that. Oh, yeah. That was just like Sven. It's true. I know.
30:08
What's he talking about, Willis, was the look. Right? We should- We should get a wizard staff out of all these incantations [laughs] It's a good plan.
30:16
So, uh, since it seems like we're all about sponsoring stuff lately, last week we talked about our involvement and sponsorship with the, uh, Global Fat Bike Summit. Just had Gary on the show today. Mm-hmm.
30:27
To set shows we're legit, right? Legit. Yeah. Yeah. We're super legit over, up in here
30:34
So, uh, this week, um, I- we started getting ready for the after party at the Fat Bike Birkie, and, uh, Mick at River's Eatery has agreed to have us back.
30:44
I don't know, we didn't destroy the joint last year, so I guess, uh, he- he's happy to have us back. Mick's, Mick's really good people, man. That, that dude is all right.
30:52
I said, uh, you know, "I wanna come back up there, Mick." He goes, "Good, I'll take care of everything." I go, "You know what, that's why I like working with you [laughs] because I got...
30:59
You know, there's other stuff to do for the party, but that's so nice to know that that portion of it's just handled." Right. So- And you know their food is gonna be great and- Right...
31:07
they always have, uh, they have ahulio.com that takes care of their beer choices. They always have- They got a lot of good local Angry Minnow beers up there. I heard they're gonna have wood-fired pizza.
31:16
[laughs] There's a pizza oven thing. You heard right. I don't know if it's fired with wood or gnomes, but, uh, it's fired with something. Mm. And they do make great food.
31:25
Um, it's, and it's in kind of, um, good party portions. It's not like you're gonna sit there and have a big meal, but they're also having these, these tap beers.
31:32
They're going to have some, uh, portion of the proceeds of the sales go to a local trail group for winter, uh, trail grooming and improvements for fat bikers. The Namaquagon Fat Bike Club. We all- Nam- Namaquagon.
31:47
I finally can actually... I used to say Namaquagogon or something. I used to goof that up, but I'm back on Namaquagon now. I think I'm- Nama-... I'm pretty good. Namaquagon. Namaquagon.
31:55
I'm gonna stay at the Namaquagon somewhere up there when I go to the, uh- Oh, boy. You, you get up there-... Fat Bike Birkie. I'm gonna get- I'm gonna be, uh, I'm gonna get Namaquagon...
32:03
hand-built bicycle show in Louisville. Louisville. Lucky man. That's a fun thing to do. Uh, Tucky. Yeah. Although, Charlotte, Charlotte was pretty good last year- [laughs]... but I like Louisville.
32:14
I'm gonna get- And Tucky... Julio a photo booth, and we're gonna put bikes in there, and we're gonna make him get pouty for the camera. I'm gonna show up and make Curtis do a wheelie on my bike. That'd be sweet.
32:24
You should come with me. Louisville, man. You and me. Try and get Steve Potts to build a, um- I went to-... titanium fat bike... Univ of Minneapolis. Hey, wait, that was a whole- Yeah... different story.
32:36
[laughs] The gas was so bad. Use your imagination, kids. All right. So- So, hey- Gomez... speaking of imaginations- I got an imagination...
32:44
Fatback, Fatback Bicycles from Anchorage, Alaska is looking for- I'm on a Fatback Radio. [laughs] Oh, yeah. I will stab you in the neck [laughs] with this pen- That doesn't click...
32:54
is looking for five ambassadors for their brand. These ambassadors are gonna get sweet, new carbon Corvus full bikes and like a blaze yellow, satin jumpsuit- Is that-...
33:10
emblazoned with the Fatback logo. They got a new logo. Does it have breakaway sides? Do you know? I don't know. Could it turn into- That's what you see, I-...
33:18
one of those wing suits when you go off the edge of the cliff- [laughs]... and you actually fly? Does it have 1,000-mile chamois?
33:23
So I was actually work- I'm gonna be talking to Sonya Looney from Fatback about working together with them, and she wanted everybody to know you don't have to be an elite athlete.
33:37
All you have to do is love fat bikes, have a computer, be able to [laughs] take great pictures- Did she say-... fill out this application- I'm on a Fatback Radio... boom, you could be a total fucking rockstar.
33:49
[laughs] Yeah. This is a good opportunity. This is not just for elite athletes. This is for people who have a good story, will be consistently out there riding their bikes, and just love fat biking. I love fat biking.
34:00
[laughs] I love fat biking. Julio wants to be one of these ambassadors. I do. I want the pink skin suit. Yes, you do. I do. Hey- Pink leopard skins... we got a, we had a- Pink skin suits...
34:14
we had a call out for Chewy here. They, we g- we got one just for Chewy right here. It's the, uh, it's the Salsa Bucksaw carbon full suspension fat bike. I heard they dropped that nugget this week.
34:25
You know, you know, I, I read this on the internets, and I immediately went, I climbed to the top of the mountain- [laughs]... to seek the guidance- Fatback, Fatcomius... of Chewy.
34:37
You know, that's the dude that's sitting in a lawn chair with a Pabst at the top of the mountain when you go to seek wisdom.
34:44
And he said, "Yeah, let's combine two things I hate most in cycling, carbon and full suspension. Just add an electric motor to it, and we've completed the trifecta." Yeah.
34:56
[laughs] Different strokes for different folks, man. Right? Only if it's, only if it's crank mounted for the electric motor, then I might go for it, 'cause it'll, it'll get this.
35:02
So the, uh, kind of interesting thing about this is- Guys are gonna ride it, though, I'm telling you... our, our amigos Fang over here- Yeah...
35:08
as soon as we were graced with the vision of the Salsa Bucksaw, like three syllables past that was- Carbon fat bike?... Sven saying, "Oh, you know what? Next thing we'll see is a carbon version of this."
35:24
[laughs] Of course, it makes sense. Come on. They already had a carbon- Oh. They already had a carbon version. Not that, not that I'm c- endorsing it. I ride- Be around. Around. Around. Around. Around. Around. Around...
35:33
a world-famous fat bike that weighs some 5,000 pounds. Be around. He saw it, and I was like, "Oh, that's cool, but I think, yeah, we'll see a carbon one someday."
35:39
People are gonna still want a sandwich and a sundae, go to Meetin' Buck. People are gonna ride it. Bow, bow, bow. There, there's a market for it. They're gonna wanna... Did we say anything bad about it? No.
35:48
No, but you know what? But Chewy did. No, we didn't say anything. And you know Chewy. Chewy's- Everybody knows Chewy... just hating, though. You know? He plays that. He was- He plays that role...
35:57
he was riding his Tom Teasdale steel fat bike frame up there and being happy as hell. And I'm, I'm a steel guy, too. He's got some massive muffintops, too.
36:04
Not that I actually have any- So that brings us to the, the subject, is we said- Even JK didn't have a muffintop on... we said we needed to begin another project. Lucian Shanes.
36:11
And now our project is gonna be- I'm envious... to get- I'd grow that... Mike Reamer on the Weekly Dose of Fat. I think he'd kinda go for that. Think so? Sure. Well, I mean, why wouldn't he?
36:22
[laughs] My first question- Have a wizard staff of imperial bacon... tell us about your fat bike line for 2015. [laughs] Carbon Bucksaw. Carbon Bucksaw. Hey, somebody had to do it, and, uh- Aluminum Bucksaw.
36:35
You know, the bike that I wanna ride from Salsa is that Blackbourn, man. Yeah, we, uh, we're working on getting one. Might be a little small for you, though Yeah, well, it's all right...
36:44
but, uh, actually that was my favorite bike at, uh, Saddle Drive. I mean, the Bucksaw was fun, but- That's what I'm missing... the problem with the Bucksaw was- That's that Hodor look...
36:52
let me, let me, let me tell you the true problem with the Bucksaw at a place like Snowbasin where you're supposed to ride one downhill fast, just shredding- I shred all the time... [laughs] is that,
37:03
is that even going downhill, I kept trying to go faster and I kept trying to pedal, and it was just so competent that I really wore myself out even going downhill. [laughs] It's like- I've been there...
37:13
the thing wants to go really fast. I've been there. But I don't see it here. I don't... It's, it's not a Midwest bike. What do you think about- Not to me... a five-inch bike shootout? A five-inch fat bike shootout.
37:25
Oh, yeah, not suspension travel like- Right... the cross-country guys, but- Right, right, right... actual man girth, like the tire diameter. You know, the Ice Cream Truck- Curved blade...
37:33
versus the Black Pearl versus the Fatback. Fatback, yeah, we got that. The Snowflake, the Whiteout. The Whiteout. Can we include the Nextie 90 in there, or does it have to be 100 millimeter rim?
37:43
Well, we're talking about full c- like, complete bikes that are five-inch bikes. But could be anywhere from an 80 to 100 millimeter rim. Correct. 'Cause I'm a big fan of the 80 with a five-inch, but listen.
37:53
I'm a big fan of the five-inch with the five. You like, you like your fat bike fat. [laughs] Fat bike. I like my fat bike fat. So join us next week. [laughs] Yeah, next week, you know what?
38:06
We're gonna crack a beer with mountain bike legend and our dirt cousin and Trek pro, his amigo, [laughs] Biz Escoras. Can you say his name again? Mr. Downtown, Travis Brown. Travis Brown, Travis Brown, Travis Brown.
38:24
I've long been an admirer of his A-game ride burns. JK, I'm sure you're, you, you're, you're an admirer as well. Yeah, JK is- Yes. JK's got some ride burns that are all connected up to his- He's Chester A.
38:35
Arthur, actually... to his nasal hairs. What a job. I was, I was calling him Millard- Those I admire... yeah, I was calling him Millard Fillmore for a while, but it turns out it's Chester A. Arthur. Chester?
38:43
I'm, I'm jealous, man. In your, in your Civil War, um, m- Harper's Weekly collection- [laughs]... you will find Chester A. Arthur. That was gonna happen when Barry was a kid.
38:50
Next to an 1867 on the cover of Harper's Weekly. I'd be riding to and from the shops as well.
38:55
So yeah, when I was talking to Travis at the old Iceman up there in Traverse City last weekend, he actually asked, he's like, "Hey, man, can I, can I join in with you guys on the beer segment?"
39:05
So, uh, does that mean that you're gonna, uh, play Beer Swami next week, Julio? Beer Swami. I will be here unless I drink the rest of this unsessionable, and, and Travis, I welcome you with open arms.
39:15
We'll embrace the inner beer geekness together. Um- The inner beer geekness... we'll be, we'll be in touch. Yeah, now our show has inner beer geekness, so that's- [laughs]... that's got- Hey, hey, hey, hey...
39:25
multiple layers. So we- Just like this beer, multiple layers... this, this coming week, Friday is actually- It's like an everlasting Brach's Toppers...
39:31
Friday is actually one of the biggest beer geek days in the entire country. It is the Festival of Barrel and Wood-Aged Beers in Chicago, otherwise known as FOBAB. Sells out in a minute.
39:42
Does everybody have to have a m- FOBA- FOBAB... their FOBAB or- It, it sells out-... Free Ma... it sells out in, like, a minute now. They had to go to three sessions, like, 2,000 people a sessions.
39:53
It is the biggest festival of barrel-aged beer in the country. I got a marketing idea. Some- I will be there... shouldn't some other cities take a little of the pressure off? Yeah, so no.
40:01
This is, this is- Chicago is, Chicago is-... listeners, all three of our listeners, you can actually vote. Should we actually, should we keep julio.com, or do we kill it? [laughs] Like a Mafia boss.
40:11
Put the knife through his throat. I vote for keeping it. No, as a piss take. Sorry. I'll, I'll be there on the behalf of fatbike.com. [laughs] I'll be there. I... You quoted Rick Astley earlier, so- It's so lonely...
40:21
I will, I will be at FOBAB, and I will re- have a small report next week. [laughs] It's not Jeff. Hey, I think we were out of the show, like, [laughs] five minutes ago. Are you guys ready to be done, or what? Yeah.
40:33
That was it. Adios, amigos. [laughs] Hey. Till next week. Uh, we're not doing any policy on the show this week. [outro music] You've been listening to Fat Bike Radio's weekly dose of fat.
40:45
Find us on the web at fat-bike.com/radio. We'll see you next time.
