Weekly Dose of Fat, show number 33 for December 5th, 2014.
0:06
[upbeat music] From the Nut Factory Salvation Studios in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, it's the Weekly Dose of Fat Radio Revival Hour, with Sven and Gomez.
0:31
Testify, my brothers and sisters. Hallelujah. Hey, that sounded just like we're famous and stuff. [laughs] Hey, you got Sven here. What's up, kittens?
0:45
It's Uncle Gomez reminding you that tomorrow is Global Fat Bike Day. That is gonna be a fantastic day to be riding your fat bike. It is. Joining us in the studio today is the inimitable JK Livin.
1:02
Eight syllables. Yeah, you got that, huh? [laughs] Inimitable. Our show is sponsored by the Surly Pug. This year's Pug comes in grassy green, man- [laughs]... and apathetic black. I'm just black.
1:19
Visit surlybikes.com to get the location of a Surly bike dealer near you, so you can take a Pug out for a test ride. It's practically guaranteed to make you smile, smile.
1:30
Do you think Steven Wright is, like, an apathetic comedian, or is the deadpan thing, is that the apathy coming out in him? I don't know. That's... He's a funny guy, though. Steven Wright is funny. We do
1:43
have a great show for you this week. Yes, on this week's show, cocktails might have happened [glass tapping] but we're going with another beer. We're gonna probably have some beer. I was trying to make bar shots.
1:55
[laughs] Milwaukee native Natalia Mendez joins us for a chat about the Freewheel Winter Bike Expo. We ask Sam Squanch the question of the week,
2:07
and the Bike Black Ribbon test pilots sit on Santa's lap and tell him what they want for X-mas. Hey, we're in that cocktail zone. Already? Cocktails, cocktails are too hard for us probably.
2:20
[laughs] It always sneaks up on us. So, so- So we just... I, I brought beer. I brought f- the fluffer beer, which is, uh- Fluffer beer... what's, what's a- what's this beer called? Uh- Sierra Nevada...
2:30
Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, huh? Yep. And then our, uh, real beer, the beer that we're tasting right now for the- The BK... almost very first time is...
2:40
[bottles clinking] And Julio would be, uh, happy to know that we're- Using glasses. Yep... using glasses. We've got, uh, Great Lakes Brewing Company's Edmund Fitzgerald.
2:53
It's an American porter style beer, and, uh, this one's been around for a long time. I, I- Mm-hmm... when I was checking out Beer Advocate, I, it was added to their site in 2001, so that's a pretty good long run. Yeah.
3:05
And it's got some staying power, obviously. Uh, it's been around a long time, but it also gets rated really well. Uh, 95? Is that the number I remember seeing? Yeah. Just a 95? That's it, man. [laughs] Just a 90.
3:17
Oh, it pours very nicely. Uh, oh, it's very pretty. It's very dark brown. No apricots to be found. Yeah. Initially I got coffee off the, off the smell. Mm-hmm. It's probably too cold to get the true flavor.
3:30
We might let it sit for a while, Julio. [laughs] And revisit. That is a good beer, though. Mm-hmm. That's a beer I, I know that I've had. Yep.
3:39
And it, right on the label it says, "World Champion Gold Medal Winner," so you know it's gotta be good. It's a, it's a, a- Up there in Bay View, I have some friends that had this on tap in their living room.
3:51
Cleveland, Ohio. You know, they're good for something after all down there. Oh, yeah. Cleveland, Ohio. Hey, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, man. Oh, that's right. Cleveland Rocks. Yeah.
4:01
Yep, they've also got a nice lakefront there. I'd be surprised if there wasn't some fat bike happening along there somewhere. Yeah. Uh, I, I would think so, for sure.
4:10
Once they get the ice shelves like we're gonna get here in a couple weeks, I cannot wait. Oh, man. Yeah. Where's our ice shelves?
4:15
[laughs] If it's going to be cold, it might as well be really cold, and we should have kickass ice shelves. I've already had two freshy single track rides on that specialized fat boy, so- Are you riding the... Hey.
4:29
Hello. [laughs] Are you ri- are you ri- are you riding the 20-inch fat bike? No. [laughs] No. Although I could. [laughs] I could rip that thing. You could shred on that thing, Sven. [laughs] Born and bred to
4:44
rip and shred. Shred. [laughs] Shred. Remember that dude at Interbike- Yep... that we talked to? As soon as I saw those small... Yeah, he was right on the video, "Born and bred to rip and shred."
4:54
[laughs] And he, like, you know he had, like, he practiced that in the mirror, man. In the mirror. [laughs] 'Cause, and then you know what?
5:01
'Cause we- And then we, I, I- I smell my own- I think that was the one video we did out there that I didn't have the sound on [laughs] for some reason. Oh, I think we had no sound on it. Sorry, dude.
5:08
So, but it went, but it went like- But I'm, I've ride the bike and I like it... it, it did, it's a Specialized, and it did go like this, "Born and bred to rip and shred."
5:17
[laughs] Speaking of ripping and shredding on Specialized- Yeah... I called, um, Mike up at Zuzu to ask him about the availability of the 24 for m- for my boy. Yeah. Maybe. It- Don't listen to the show, son.
5:28
He doesn't listen to this one. [laughs] Garrett. Garrett. No, daddy won't let him listen to the show 'cause there's too many naughty words. [laughs] Too many swears. Nah, that's all right.
5:37
So it's a, it's a good beer, boy. I could drink a lot of that beer right there.
5:42
It's only 5.6% too, so you can, you know, have a couple of them and enjoy them without- That's a delicious har- And they- This is like a, a hearty meal- Mm... in a glass.
5:51
Well, isn't that what they used to give the dock workers so that they would, uh, you know, just continue to perform?
5:56
They'd get a little bit lubricated, they'd get a little loose, and they'd actually get some nutrition to burn off while they're carrying sacks of-... barley or hops to make the beer Are we gonna talk about your rye?
6:07
Your, your idea of a cocktail? [laughs] Should bring us, bring us some booze. Well, that's what made the noise earlier. [laughs] It clanking into the cowbell and the hula girl. Yeah. It is the holidays, after all.
6:18
[laughs] Doesn't a cocktail have to have more than one ingredient? It's got, yeah, a flask- Let me taste- A flask of rye... let me taste your damn cocktail here. [laughs] Flask of Wiser's Rye.
6:29
Wiser's Rye, ladies and gentlemen. Yes. If you could see it out of its natural flask element. I'll even take a taste, and I'm not a whiskey drinker. Wow. It's actually- Why am I always the one that's, like, total sissy?
6:40
It's quite good. [laughs] No, it's, uh, it's very toasty. I'm- Why? Why, why am I always a sissy? Why? I ask why. You know, I'm a, I, I am a Bulleit Bourbon guy, but this is, uh... And their rye is good, too, actually.
6:50
I'm not sure why. I know rye normally, it's bourbon, but, uh, that's tasty. Yeah. Yeah, that is, that is palatable, I'd say. Is it, is it in, like- It's flask-worthy... is it in, like, Rye Advocate's, uh, rating system?
7:01
Or, uh, what do they have whiskey.com or what? It, uh, no, it, it, just, uh, askmen.com. [laughs] Ask, ask men what they drink? That's boozy. That's about it.
7:12
And speak to- Do, do we get paid, do we get paid from askmen.com to mention them on the air? Yeah. No, we did not. [laughs] No, we're just asking men. Oh. askmen.com. That's my save.
7:21
Um- We put a lot of stuff on the air that we- [laughs]... that we get nothing from. Like- Well, that's what we are... you know, this, but this- The benevolent... yeah, exactly. Information conduit of fat bike love.
7:33
All righty then. Well, cheers, boys. Cheers. All right. Clink, clink. Bam. [laughs] Clang. Damn it, that beer's almost gone already. [laughs] I got a little more in there. I got well into the fluffer beers.
7:49
All righty then. Well, we'll be back with our special guest, Natalia. Your Fat Bike Radio. Hi, this is Scott Chambers, director of the Great Lakes Fat Bike Series.
8:03
And when I'm not out timing races in the winter, I listen to Simon Gomez on fatbikeradio.com. Please welcome to the radio show, Senorita Natalia Mendez. Hey, guys. Thanks for having me on the show.
8:19
So Natalia, you are here to talk to us about this weekend's Freewheel Winter Bike Expo. For the folks at home, maybe you could, uh, tell them all about it. Oh, I would be happy to.
8:32
So, uh, coinciding nicely with Global Fat Bike Day 2014, this year is the fourth annual Winter Bike Expo, and it's December 6th and 7th.
8:42
And I just look forward to it every year, because it's essentially a two-day winter cycling party that takes place at our Midtown Bike Center, which is conveniently located on our local bike highway, The Greenway.
8:53
Uh, one of the benefits of this location is it's an old railroad bed, so we have the space and the ability to create a closed demo course for fat bikes.
9:01
Uh, this year for demos we'll have Salsa, Surly, and Trek there, so that'll be a good opportunity for those who wanna try out a fat bike for the first time, or to help those who are pretty well-versed in fat to choose the right model for them.
9:13
Hmm. Registration starts at 9:00, with the course opening at 10:00 until 4:30 both days.
9:19
Um, it's a, we're, it's a pretty fat-heavy event, with seminars about how to set up your fat bike tubeless, the history of fat bikes, and Salsa's Bucksaw presentation. But I wanna stress it's not limited to fat bikes.
9:31
We have a lot of awesome seminars, like winterizing your rig for cold weather commuting, a winter bike packing presentation, snowshoe demos, and a winter trail advocacy seminar as well, and much, much more.
9:43
Uh, this year we also wanted to make the event a little bit more family-friendly, so we're doing a bike transportation for families seminar.
9:51
We'll have little kids' balance bikes with skis on them, and we'll have a kids' corner with a bunch of Legos for the little rippers to warm up indoors. Hmm.
9:58
Uh, for those who fear change, we wanted to make sure some things stayed the same, like, uh, hourly raffles. Our awesome cafe staff will be there slinging hot cider, coffee, and snacks all day.
10:09
There'll be beer in the evening from our sponsor Bed Paddle. And it wouldn't be the Winter Bike Expo without our Super Fat Crit, which is presented by 45 North this year. The Venter Hammer is at 6:00 PM on Saturday.
10:21
And I did wanna mention, if we've got folks coming in from out of town that wanna stay the whole weekend, there's a hotel that is just damn near connected to the Midtown building, the Sheraton Minneapolis Midtown Hotel.
10:32
And if you'll be coming for the day and wanna put our address into the Google, uh, our address is 2834 10th Avenue South.
10:40
Uh, as I mentioned before, it's located on the railroad bed on the Greenway level, so there's no street entrance.
10:46
Uh, there are a couple good places to park on Chicago between 28th and Lake, where you'll look for the Freewheel Bike flag on 10th or 11th Avenue South.
10:55
So you'll walk down the stairs to the Greenway, turn your head, look for the ramps, and, uh, listen for the fun. And if you wanna pay for parking, which, you know, if we get full up, there is the Global Midtown,
11:10
uh, parking ramp nearby. Uh, I know I've been talking a lot, but I'm just super excited. That's just the tip of the iceberg.
11:17
Um, if you want more information, we've got a full list of sponsors, lots of fun links to click on, uh, at our event website, www.winterbikeexpo.com. Right on. And we'll have that, that web address in the show notes.
11:31
One thing you didn't mention is, uh, that you can get your picture taken with a, uh, with, like, a seven-foot-tall Yeti. That's, that's right. Uh, we have had the Yeti.
11:43
He creeps around, and he has for the past couple years now. Uh, we will have a live Yeti maybe. He probably will pop in. And we'll also have a cutout where you can take a photo as yourself as the Yeti. Oh, oh, okay.
11:59
[laughs] That sounds pretty cool. So, uh, that is a really nice event. People, if you, if you haven't been there, I mean, they have a race course that's built right into this little Greenway railroad bed that banks up.
12:14
It almost looks like the Los Angeles River, but it's green or white with snow. It's a really cool setup. But it also is a great bike sale, right? You're gonna have...
12:24
I was amazed every year that I went there that all of the things that I coveted were there in huge numbers A fully loaded event. Uh, again, check out that sponsor list there.
12:37
We've got, like, like you said, pretty much everything you'd want for a fat bike, we have just to the gills. It's a, it's a great time. Well, sweet.
12:46
Now, are you ready to, uh, go into the lightning round of our interview? Ooh, I've never been more ready for anything in my life. Answer the following five questions muy rapidemente. Beard or balaclava? Beard.
12:59
You know, they make balaclavas in the shape of a beard now, so, you know, even the ladies can, uh, in, uh, have the long beard, uh, respect. Cool. Sport or underwire? [laughs] Uh, we'll do underwire.
13:16
[laughs] Steel, aluminum, carbon or Ti? I'm a steel girl, so we'll go with steel. Nice. Sven or Gomez? Oh, sorry, Sven. I love Gomey. [laughs] Gomez wins again.
13:34
And our last question, what do you want for Christmas? Boy, a winter helmet and some goggles would be really nice this year. There you go. What kind of color are you looking for?
13:44
Are you gonna go with the white, or are you gonna go all blackity black? Uh, they make some pretty good colors this year. Um, I would say a teal. I had my eye on a teal helmet this year. Oh, nice. So we're up for that.
13:56
Very nice. Well, we really have, uh, enjoyed having you on the show, Natalia. You're gonna have to come back on and sing us a song or something. Oh, I would love to. I love Christmas caroling. Thanks for having me.
14:08
[laughs] Very good. Well, take care. We'll see you when we see you. All right. Adios. You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio.
14:20
Hi, I'm Steve with Borealis Bikes, and I'm gonna tell you a little bit about our brand new Echo fat bike frame. The Borealis Echo is the first available carbon fat bike frame designed around the RockShox Bluto fork.
14:30
It delivers nimble treadability with clearance to handle up to five-inch tires.
14:34

14:41
The result is truly a year-round fat bike that takes on all disciplines of mountain biking. Visit Borealis Bikes to find a dealer near you. We promise, once you go fat, you'll never go back.
14:54
[whistles] This is your weekly dose of fat. Hey, welcome back to the radio program, Dad. Here's Sven with this week's episode of Ask Sam Scratch. Hey, how you guys doing? [laughs] This week's question is,
15:12
"What tire pressure should I run?" Yeah, good question. Uh, we see this one a lot, actually. It's probably the most asked question I get, next to, "What's up with those big tires?"
15:22
[laughs] Uh- Hey, we've heard it a million times- Yeah, for sure... no running on the pool deck. Uh, and well, how low can you go with pressure? How low- How low have you ever run?... can you go?
15:34
The lowest I've gone is when the sidewall wrinkles like a dragster tire, but I didn't measure it. It was probably five PSI, maybe. I know I've measured four. Yeah, somewhere in there.
15:45
I- When I'm just folding it over and scrunchy as hell. Yeah. And that was probably a fricking endo that I did the four in. Uh, yep. Well, I, I think that's kind of on the practical limit.
15:57
Four is about as low as you can go. [sighs] What if you're a, a little bit, uh, on the husky side of the, uh, scale? [laughs] Do you wear husky jeans? [laughs] Yeah. Then it's just- Fatter than the average lean rider...
16:11
well, if, uh- Hmm... if pressure is that low, I'm usually thinking either a lot of flotation on sand or kind of rock crawler motions where you're going slow. So you're not beating on it that much. Slushy snow, deep snow.
16:22
Yeah, you never go... It's not like you're hammering on it. Right. So, but, uh, yeah, I, it's, uh, you know, uh, different tires need different pressures to work well in different situations.
16:31
It's un- you know, it's basically you gotta experiment with it, uh, I think. Without- Have you noticed that we've become like politicians? Without- We ask the weekly question and then we never [laughs] actually...
16:42
Well, it depends on, well, uh, uh, it, yeah. Okay. Well, I, here, here, I'm gonna give a concrete answer for people out there. It's a start. Start at 10 PSI for off-road use, and then reduce till things are smooth.
16:59
You know? That's, uh, beach riding, you're gonna... And I wouldn't even...
17:02
I would say, I would start my ride with my Presta valves all the way open, and just know that I'm gonna pop off the bike and I use the, I use the scale of one second is one PSI. So if I wanna go down to seven,
17:19
I count one-one thousand, two-one thousand, three, and, right? Mm-hmm. So, uh, that seems to work on- It goes like this. [hisses] [laughs] Like that. Wait, belch. Three PSI. [burps] Um, so, right?
17:34
[laughs] So if you start at 10 and then you go out, and if you're in really loose conditions, some, like, signs that you have too much air is all of your friends are riding away from you.
17:48
[laughs] And you're, and you're, and you're digging a furrow in the sand about three feet deep. And, you know, and you look back and you're like, "Oh, I'm, I'm cutting in some."
17:55
And then- Yeah, you can look at your tracks on the beach and see... you know? You can hop off, drop two PSI, hop back on, and if you start to gain on your friends, you're doing good. Yep.
18:07
In snow, if your front wheel is washing out, let air out. Let it... If it's washing out, let it out. Yeah. Yeah. We should make a T-shirt that says, "Washing out, let out." Oh. Or maybe some panties.
18:18
You know, yeah, for, for soft conditions, uh, I, I like those low pressures, for sure. I think I, I normally end up around eight PSI on the beach for my own personal size and bike and whatever.
18:30
Although, the bigger tires, the five-inch tires- Running lower pressure even than that is sweet. Yeah. The, the 3.8s, I keep them up a little bit more. Um, and I definitely on trails use like 12 to 15.
18:43
Yeah, and- When I'm, when I'm on like a, a single track, and especially with a narrower rimmed bike where there's less volume in the tire, I ramp that up.
18:51
Plus, I'm usually gonna be hitting rocks and ruts and jumping off stuff and, you know, it's a little more aggressive, so on the trail, little bit more pressure.
18:58
But I think 15, maybe 18 around the city on the, on the street. Right. When you're riding Santa Cycle Rampage and you're- Yep... not going off-road, that's about as high as I ever go.
19:08
And I'm telling you, go tubeless, people. Tubeless. It's like the best thing you can do. Yep. It will make your bike roll easier. Go through whatever pain it takes to get it actually working.
19:19
Uh, a lot of the newer stuff is really easy to set up, and- It's not that hard... enjoy. Use the tube to set the beads. Watch those videos. Yep, watch the videos. If I can do it, you can do it. Cujo is- And [laughs]
19:33
it's the barking devil- [laughs]... says, "Go tubeless."
19:37
Uh, another thing that I, I use to, uh, remember tire pressures is just when I'm riding and I find the bike working well in a situation, I s- I give the tire a little squeeze, and I go, "Oh, that..."
19:47
You know, 'cause you can squish into it a certain amount, and you just get a feel for the firmness of the tire. If it's so hard you can't squeeze it, it's got way too much air in it. Yeah.
19:55
So I'm gonna squeeze it, and then next time I'm in that kind of condition, I'll just give the tire a squeeze. I'll go, "Too hard, too soft, or kinda back where I was the last time I did it." Mm-hmm.
20:03
What's your special test? Well, I, I don't use the squeeze test 'cause I run five-inch tires a lot. That's a big thing to grab around. Um, I use the sit.
20:13
I sit on the tire, the top of the tire, and I put like most of my weight on there, and I get an idea of how it's gonna ride when it's loaded. Uh, you know, and that seems to give me the best input, uh, and again- Do-...
20:28
I, I start with a firmer tire than I think I need, and then I just let out at that first, at that first regroup or rest stop- Beer stop... or Photoshop. Oh, speaking of beer stops. Oh, we should have a beer stop.
20:40
[bell ringing] Beer stop. Oh, there's rye, too. [laughs] Oh, so saith the Irishman. [laughs] It is the holidays, right? Right. Back in the holidays- So I use the, uh-... ladies and gentlemen...
20:51
I do the butt test, I guess. Li- ladies, holidays. So did we, did we evade answering that question? No, I said start at 10 PSI. Oh, yeah. Okay. But- For soft condition, and I-...
21:02
and for, for Innova tires and 45Nrth tires, and probably, I don't know, there's so many brands now, but I'm telling you, Vee Rubber tires start at, start at 15- Yeah, probably... and, and go down from there. Yep.
21:17
For some reason, Vee tires need more air to ride like they should. Depends on, on the model, too. There's a lot of variations in it, frankly.
21:26
It s- sounds, you know, cliche, but you're just gonna have to ride and experiment and learn what you like. Just don't go below four or above, uh, you know, 18 and you're, [laughs] you're probably fine- Yeah... somewhere.
21:36
Yeah, totally that. Do what he said. What? The guy with the booze. [laughs] You want more? You want more of that? No, I'm all right. Okay. I'm all right. Oh, yeah, I do. Oh, shot gun. Cannonball coming.
21:45
[laughs] Cannonball coming. All right. Yeah, they're- Only because this, you know, your mother. So we- [laughs]... we've, we've, we've s- we've sat on tires.
21:53
We've learned to l- u- use our hand, I think, uh- It's Mommy's kisses... w- we're going into the, uh, call-in segment. We're having a call-in segment?
22:02
Yeah, people are gonna be able to call in, and we're gonna chat with them. This, tonight's subject, uh, we're going to do what or how are you celebrating Global Fat Bike Day? What is your quest? No.
22:13
[laughs] And the second question is, uh, what do you want for Christmas? You know, fat bike gifts. All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth. You have them. Look at them. Well, one of them.
22:22
They're straight and everything. Two of them. [laughs] I got... They're both in there, but I can't yank it out. Oh, mine are fake. Well, no, I can't either. I still got all my own teeth. My toothises.
22:31
I've got the base of it. I've got like a f- So after a quick break, we'll have, uh, live people talking to us. Live people calling us- It'll be-... on the telephone... crazy. You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio. Hey, dude.
22:47
You're on the air. What is up? It's the Spinner. Spinner. Yo. So this is, uh, Spinner Ryerson from- Call number one... Platteville, Wisconsin, or are you in Madison right now? I'm in Madison right now.
23:04
So Spinner- I wish I was in Platteville... Spinner's a professional, uh, disc golfer and likes to ride fat bikes. He's a Bike Black Ribbon test pilot, and we have two questions for Spinner tonight.
23:16
Question number one, how are you celebrating Global Fat Bike Day, amigo? Hell yes, I am. I'm headed up to, uh, Two Rivers. I'm gonna see, um, Doobie Dave and George Russell and break fingers and have a good time. Ah.
23:30
So GLAMBA, a GLAMBA meeting [laughs] and, uh, [laughs] and Global Fat Bike Day. Fantastic. At the, at the Love Shack up there right on the beach. That's exactly right, and I hope I don't shack up- [laughs]...
23:45
with the wrong fat biker. [laughs] Hey, there, there's only- I don't want to say it... there is no wrong. There's only right.
23:54
[laughs] So, my man, my, my second question is, uh, I want you to, uh, you know, step right up on, uh, on Sven's lap and tell him what you want for Christmas. On Sven's lap?
24:06
Oh, w- uh- Yeah, 'cause I'm, I'm, I'm seeing the show. Okay. [laughs] Well, other than some, uh, you know, basic shifting and derailleur knowledge, which I obviously do not have, or we should find out,
24:20
I want a fat cargo bike. I've been waiting for that.
24:22
I've been asking people for that for years, and I've been getting a lot of different answers, that the fat bike group and the cargo bike group are these two circles, and where they overlap is a very small section.
24:32
But I think that's gonna be growing now that everybody's into fat biking and more people-... are getting out there and riding in the snow, and wanna haul stuff along, and it's hard to carry a backpack of beer.
24:42
If I could just throw that on my cargo bike, I think that'd be- What if I told you that I'm only about 40 feet away from a fat cargo [laughs] bike? [laughs] Are you really? From that, uh, the Schlick model? Yeah.
24:56
Come to Mil- come to Milwaukee, man. Yeah. The, the studio- Yeah... the, our radio studio, and you know, the place where we- So if I-...
25:05
invite young ladies to come out for nude photography, for boudoir photography here, is, uh, right across the street from Schlick Cycles. Oh, really? I love that- Across the hall... fat bike.
25:17
If I sit on Sven's lap he'll give me a fat cargo bike, is that what I'm hearing? Well, I don't know about that. [laughs] Maybe. [laughs] That was Sven. Maybe. Maybe. That's, that's Sven. He's just been listening in.
25:32
So thanks for, uh, coming, uh, on the show Spinner, my man, and now my friends, it is time to go to the next caller. Sounds good. Thanks a lot. Later, Spinner. All right. Who have I got on the air? It might be julio.com.
25:51
Julio. Sven's on here too. He can talk. I can... Hey, Julio. Hey. I could hear you guys talking to Spinner. Yeah. So we're-
26:03
So everybody else that's in the queue right now can hear us talking, but they can't get in unless I push the button. [laughs] So we're just gonna give it all to you, Julio. Gomez has some questions.
26:14
That sound, that sounds good to me. So Julio, how are you celebrating Global Fat Bike Day? Um, I'm unfortunately not. I'm going to be somewhere else dreaming of, of what I could be doing at Global Fat Bike Day.
26:32
Penitentiary. Got it. So the, uh, next question is, uh, jump up on Uncle Gomez's lap here. Tell Santa Gomez what you want for Christmas. I would say, uh, I want some new winter riding boots.
26:48
That was until recently when I, until I picked up a pair of, uh, carbon fiber fat bike rims and could not believe, um, how light they were. I've held some in the past. [laughs] It's been a while. I- Um-
27:03
I knew what I was kind of doing to you by, by s- by letting you test that bike [laughs] and, a- Mm-hmm... and those carbon wheels. I was just, uh- Yeah...
27:12
I was just, you know- We're not supposed to swear, we're not supposed to swear on the air, so I won't repeat what I said.
27:16
[laughs] But then I pr- but, but then I pr- but, but then I promptly came home and weighed just the front against the front of, um, of my personal fat bike, and it was over a pound difference.
27:29
Uh, that's, that's, that's pretty big. Yeah. That's a pound. Just a pound. So our questions are over, and now we gotta go to the next caller. So, uh, hey, I think there's a big pile of offs for you to go. Boop.
27:45
[laughs] And- I'll talk to you guys later. See ya. Be well. Bye. Who do I have on the line? Here is Angry... Angry Andy. Angry Andy. Andy. Welcome to Andy. My bill just- So Andy, we had two questions.
28:03
How are you celebrating- Uh... Global Fat Bike Day? I will be riding at 9:07 at Southern Kettles. [laughs] Well, that's a surprising story. You'll have to tell me more about that later. [laughs] And- It's huge...
28:17
hop up on Sven's lap and tell him what you want for Christmas. Yeah, but- Oh, I, I, I, I feel, uh, Julio's sentiments about the carbon rims. I'd be down for carbon rims anytime.
28:28
You know, there's a lot of them coming out too. That, that flat tire, unbelievable. Yeah. San- Santa might have some carbon in a bag for you. [laughs] Have you been a good boy, Andy? Uh, no. [laughs] No.
28:45
I, I provide my throne- All right... at the Angry Andy World Headquarters, but that, I mean, on a little ladder in my garage fixing a garage door opener. [laughs] Nice. All right, Andy, we gotta go to the next caller.
28:58
So fuck off. All right. [laughs] Hey, who do I have on the line? Hello? Who do I have on the line? Hello? Who's this? Who, who's this? This is Chewy. H-
29:16
Chewy? Chewy. Well. What's new, guys? This is awesome. You know what- [laughs] You know what the cool... You know the, you know what's the coolest thing about it? Listen. [laughs] Listen.
29:30
I can take a shit and talk to you guys. [laughs] Well we have two questions while you evacuate your spent fuel pellets. [laughs] Um, hey, question number one is how are you celebrating Global Fat Bike Day?
29:47
I'm boycotting. I'm not... Just Hallmark cards is just another holiday made up to make people buy Christmas or holiday cards. Bullshit. [laughs] I do like...
29:57
Yes, and Gomez wants me to have a product, so it will be a Global Fat Bike Day gift card for Sven. Oh, God. I, that's, that's why we love you, Chewy. Answers like that is why we love you.
30:10
Question number two, hop up on Sven's lap and tell him what you want for Christmas. Come on. Take it. How do you get to Sven's lap? Oh, answer the question first. Does he got pants on?
30:24
[laughs] Uh, not as far as you know. They're not s- they're not surly pants, but they're, they're like- Based on what I remember, I probably wouldn't know either. [laughs] They're like cargo pants.
30:37
What's on your Christmas list there, Daddio? My Christmas l- I need, I need a mini bar to fit on my bill trailer that I'm trying to figure out how to mount skis onto it And then have a traveling bar That would be sweet.
30:50
Or you could just get a cargo bike like my fat bike and put it on the back of that. Yeah, yeah maybe- Well there aren't enough fat bikes to go around, so yeah. I like, but I do like the cargo fat bike idea too.
31:01
That's a good one. So- All right Chewie, we uh- Happy holidays... we got more callers to talk to. Happy holidays, bro. Happy to you guys. Bye. Hey, hey, who's on the line? Uh, it's Colin.
31:18
Colin Ford. From sunny Colorado. Yeah, yeah. So, um, earlier this evening, I'm sorry, but you lost to Huber. Sorry. I lost? How did I lose to Huber?
31:36
And there's no one else I'd really lose to, really wanna lose to, you know? [laughs] I know, 'cause he's a good dude. So we have two questions for you, Colin. Question number one, what is your quest? Nope, just kidding.
31:50
That was a fake question. [laughs] Question number one, how are you celebrating Global Fat Bike Day? Uh, I'm gonna try to go out to Buffalo Creek and ride with, uh, maybe Mr. Adam Blake- Oh nice...
32:05
and a bunch of other gauchos. A bunch of other gauchos, you know, riding bikes all over the place. That's Sven cackling over there in the background, if you heard something. Yep. I'm, I'm talking to you.
32:18
I'm cackling my knuckles right now. Hey, good to hear your voice. Uh, J- Jim gave me the answer I called you on the phone to ask you about already, so thanks for, thanks for calling back. Yeah, well [laughs]
32:29
I was out riding and my phone was on airplane mode so I could take pictures. Geez. Oh. Sorry, guys. You get any good photos? Send them to us so we can put them on the site. Uh, okay. Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
32:43
Question number two, climb up on my lap and tell me what you want for Christmas, big boy. Oh, it's so far away. Uh, definitely a set of the Moon Men titanium handlebars. Ah, yeah. Those things- Ugh, yes...
33:01
make me salivate. Oh yeah, those are good. Those are super good. Well played, old sport. Yeah. I think you win. Thank you for calling in. Yay. Next caller, please. Adios, amigos. This is Fat Bike Radio.
33:17
Who do I got on the line? Ernesto Reyes Gomez. Ernesto! Medina de la Mira. Ernesto,
33:30
we have two questions for you, and I have question number one right here. Tell me the question. How are you celebrating Global Fat Bike Day? By wearing the Tacones from Santiago.
33:47
[laughs] What does that mean, amigo? Uh, by wearing, uh, Santiago's shoes. [laughs] Rolando stays in Chicago, hey. Um, yeah, so question number two- Yeah,
34:02
I am celeb- [laughs] I am celebrating, I am celebrating Fat Bike Global-ness on the sixth by riding my Moonlander around town in Chicago, and getting everybody hyped up and saying, "Oh my gosh, look at those tires.
34:18
Look at those tires. Look at those tires. Oh my God, mommy, look at those tires. Look at those tires. Look at those tires," because that's what happens when you ride on the lakefront of Chicago on Lake Michigan. Chicago.
34:33
Si. So question number two, amigo. [squeals] Um, question number two is, uh, hop up on Sven's lap there and tell him what you want for Christmas. Yeah. Put her up on my lap there, buddy. Put her right on the lap of mine.
34:50
I, I'll take care of you, no problem. Uh, if, if there on the left, then I would ask Santa, Dear Santa Claus, can I please have a lock of your beard to keep in my pocket? And I would also say, Dear Santa Claus,
35:07
can you please give me carbon bicycle parts, because carbon is lighter than steel. That's all I want for Christmas- Santa knows about that carbon stuff, I'll tell you what... Santa Claus. Santa Claus hears your plea.
35:21
Santa Claus feels your need. Santa Claus will fulfill your every dream. Santa Claus, Santa Claus. Santa Claus does for you. All right, thanks for calling Fat Bike Radio.
35:34
Hey, who, who has more fat bikes on the Fat Bike Radio than Fat Bike Radio? Tell me, huh, Ernesto from Mars? Who? [laughs] Aye, aye. G- goodbye Mr. Ernesto. Santa Claus says, uh, go be a good boy or go home.
35:50
[squeals] Santa brings gifts. Okay? You, you, you go now, but- Adios, amigos... then you go after that. Adios, amigos. You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio. This is T6 Brit.
36:07
Listening to Fat Bike Radio keeps me regular. So, uh, you remember, uh, Lancelot Link? Every time I think about links I think about Lancelot Link, the talking chimp. Are we back on the show now? I think so.
36:18
Okay [laughs] Hey, hey, Lee. [laughs] Welcome back to the show. Welcome back to the show. Lancelot Link, yeah. What was... He was a- Secret chimp... secret chimp, right. Yes, I remember that vaguely.
36:30
So Link, Linkages, uh, right off the bat we got a recall this week for you folks.
36:35
If you run a Salsa Muckluck that you bought anywhere from about September of '13 to November of this year, go ahead and take that back to the dealer and, uh, they're gonna do a replacement on the fork, just to keep you safe and, uh, non- Folly downy or broken or whatever That's, that's a lot of readers There is, yeah- Out there...
36:54
there's a lot of Mukluks out there. That's a lot of Mukluks. There, there is a link in the show notes to the notice on Salsa's site. Don't be a dick- [laughs]... and, and not do this. Just- Get a new fork, man...
37:06
for your own safety. What's wrong with that? Yeah. It's free. Yeah. Hey, and if you're in the Twin Cities, you know- Re- replacing your fork.
37:13
[laughs] Natalia was just on the show telling us about the Winter Bike Expo at the Freewheel Bike Center there on the Greenway.
37:22
But our friends, uh, from Twin Six also have an event on Friday night to launch, you know, the Standard Fat Bike and, uh, just have a party. So, and you can visit Twin Six.
37:36
I don't know if you guys have ever been there, but, uh, it's gonna be a party. You know- Right in their w- right in their, uh, s- offices, studio. Yeah. Shop.
37:44
These people support the site, so please go there, drink their free beer, and, you know- Tell 'em-... scream Gomez every once in a while... yeah, tell 'em Go- tell 'em Gomez sent ya. Gomez!
37:56
[laughs] Tell 'em the G-Man sent ya. G day. Did you notice Men's Health Magazine finally got into the fat bike, uh- Men's Health, they claim that we burn 1,500 calories an hour.
38:09
That is impressive, 'cause just normal daily activities in the bedroom are only, like, 600 an hour. How much is this beer? [laughs] Do the math, people. Yeah. It's astronomical.
38:24
All right, let's just see here how many calories are in this beer. [laughs] So, uh, Seattle Times has a, uh, article about fat bikes. Dr. John, oh man, one more year, he has- Was that, was that, like, the medicine show?
38:40
T- was it, like, a band? [laughs] Dr. John and the band? And the Medicine Show? Isn't that what they call it?
38:45
He's a cat over there in the UK that's been a cool ass rider and photographer for years and years that I've followed. Groovy. Dr. John. Um- You got Jobu going. Yeah, we got other stuff from Jobu, frolicking in the snow.
38:59
They did a ride, um, post-turkey day. I think, you know, burn off the turkey. Mm. Get out of me, you turkey. It's time for, what do we got coming up? Uh, Irish, uh- [laughs]...
39:10
Irish beef or, uh, maybe a, a Reuben somewhere. I don't know. We have to cycle S- Santa Cycle Rampage this Saturday. Yeah. And Global Fat Bike Day. Yeah.
39:21
I think that this is where, uh, this is wh- [laughs] this is where Gomez's, uh, honey wants him to go for- [laughs]... for Global Fat Bike [laughs] Day, so that's pretty much where we're going. Is Bethany gonna be going?
39:32
Yeah. Oh, well, there you go. Yeah. I was going to go up to Manitowoc 'cause they're gonna have a really cool event up there. I went up last year. But, uh, I don't think I'm gonna make it.
39:42
I got an out-of-town guest in, and well- Well, the, uh, the initial, the, the, the mass meetup is 10:30 to 11:30- For-... Central Standard Time... for the Santa Cycle Rampage.
39:54
Yeah, at Lakefront Brewery, and then from there- So we, we go earlier to a s- to an ancillary- Feeder bar... feeder bar and get fluffed up there. Yeah. Yeah, they have fluff.
40:03
So- It's always kinda started by Cafe Hollander. Yeah, that's where we're starting. That's normally, uh- Uh, but there's also a Hollander out west.
40:10
There's one on the south side where they're starting, and they start, I think, at Fuel Cafe or something. Yeah.
40:15
So there's all these that feed into Lakefront, and then from there they ride en masse to Great Lakes, and then they disperse again. Right. It's not like the olden days. Right, right.
40:24
So there's so many s- 'Cause there's just got to be- They're both, there's so many Santas... so huge, 350 Santas. So many grants to herd. Right.
40:30
I think I heard there's a- You know, and it's gonna be in the mid-30s this year, so there sh- you know, there should be a lot of people on it. Yeah, yeah. Last year was awesome, too.
40:37
The, the barrier to entry is low, people. Get your Santa suit on, and if you have a fat bike, ride it, because we're gonna do a big fat bike love hug somewhere. Yeah, for reals. Probably.
40:47
Maybe down at the Lakefront on our way. We could just break off from the... You know, we should probably do it under a bridge, actually. That's really the natural- That's right, like, Great- Under a bridge with beers.
40:54
Yeah, right by Great Lakes Brewing, there's a beer, so we can do that. We'll get a fat bike, uh, group photo for our Global Fat Bike Day. I went as Krampus last year. Is it, are you gonna ride your Krampus?
41:04
Well, I rode my Krampus last year- It's not a Krampus... and I went as Krampus. As a Krampus. I have a Krampus mask. I know, it was good. It was amazing. [laughs] I had switches stuck in a, in a, in my messenger bag.
41:13
Mm-hmm. And I got the new backpack, so I- I, I did not at all- I can put a kid inside my backpack... I didn't really follow the route last year that much. Well, yeah, there's- There were deviations. Very messy.
41:23
But in, in, in general, we rode with Santas for a good portion of the day. Yeah, yeah. You'd see, like, one or two random Santas just blasting across an intersection- Well, I think that's kind of the-...
41:31
and you're like, "Hey, Santa. I'm Santa, too." It's, you know, the idea is that all, on that day, that you just see a bunch of Santas. Santas are everywhere.
41:38
And, and you can't- I think that the whole idea is three words, fun on bikes. Be there. Exactly. If you're in, anywhere near Milwaukee, this is something that's worth doing. Come up and join us. Meet Gomez. Meet Sven.
41:49
Meet JK. Hi. Have Gomez spill his beer on you. [laughs] Oh, takes only two of us. Oh, sorry. [laughs] It's a magical experience. [laughs] I usually do that with my left hand, but, uh- [laughs] Oopsie...
42:02
all right, I think we've burned up [laughs] enough of these fine people's time. So, uh, adios. No way, man. We've got one last thing to say. Damn it. I was close to being done there.
42:13
Thanks to Surly for sponsoring the show. Oh, yeah, we're all over the place. Surly makes, uh, fine steel bikes, and, uh, the, it's for open-minded people, and JK actually will read the actual ad.
42:26
[laughs] Sorry, I'm improvising. Ha. Thanks again to Surly, who makes things that Gomez riffs on- [laughs]... and sponsoring the radio portion of today's broadcast. Surly makes sound, practical steel bikes.
42:42
It's an innovative and unique company that encourages people to think for themselves. Good night, blue sky. Good night, blue sky. [laughs] Goodbye, blue sky. [laughs] I can't read that.
42:56
I'm looking at Goodnight Moon. Goodnight. Goodnight, moon. Goodnight, sk- Goodnight, room. Goodnight, moon. Goodnight, cow jumping over the moon. Goodnight, light and the red balloon.
43:08
I think we've gone all s- '60s freaky style now. [laughs] Yeah. Goodnight, room. Goodnight. Goodnight. You've been listening to Fat Bike Radio's weekly dose of fat.
