Thanks for having me. Yeah, thanks for joining us in the studio, man. That's awesome. In the studio. All right. Yeah. You're our first US champion that has come to the studio, so you're our favorite US national champion.

Right on. [laughs] So congratulations on the win last weekend at Fat Bike Birkie. So now you own maybe, like, the Great Lakes National Championship Belt, and Ned owns the USAC Belt.

What do you say we settle this the old-fashioned way, do a little best two out of three falls Indian leg wrestling? I think I got bigger legs than Ned. I'll take him. [laughs] All right. [laughs] Very good.

The, the gauntlet has been thrown down, Ned. Uh, I get questions from, uh, from our gerbils that listen to the show [laughs] And, uh,

you know, one of the, one of the questions that come up for a lot of the guys that are doing well in racing, and since you won, I think it's very pertinent, people wanna know what's up with your bike? How's it set up?

What makes it so fast? Is it, like, the bike or is it the guy? You know. My bike, it's fast. Um, yeah, carbon 907 Whiteout, uh, in green, of course.

It's got the HED rims with Dillinger 4s set up tubeless, so down to 22 and a half pounds. Nice. SRAM XX1, Ergon grips. So nothing somebody couldn't just buy off the- Oh, you-... showroom floor though, basically.

So really the motor's what makes it go fast. You can totally buy it. [laughs] Looks like some Race Face Next carbon rockin' there too, right? Yeah, lots of carbon, lots of Race Face. And it weighs? 22 and a half pounds.

Yeah, yeah. See, get down in that range and they start to feel like real bikes again, don't they? Oh, it's a rocket ship. [laughs] And it seems like Dillinger is the favorite tire of everyone in Anchorage.

Oh, yeah, absolutely. Um, well especially this year with the studability of them. Right. We haven't had any snow, so. So there you go, listeners. That'll make you faster, buy a, buy a 907.

So what we really brought you here for is the story of the race, the tactics and how they worked out.

I don't know how much tactics went down before the turnaround, but maybe pick us up somewhere there before the turnaround and take us all the way to the finish. So yeah, it was a pretty fast start.

It was just one big string of riders until probably, what, four miles in at the power line. And then the hills on the power line, it broke into a group of about 15.

And then a couple riders dropped off between there and the turnaround, so I think at the turnaround we were down to 10. Uh- And was, did you have anybody in that pack?

Was Jamie in that pack or was he- Yeah, my boss and owner of 907 Cycles, uh, Jamie, he was in the pack. Uh, anoth- another Alaskan, John Sundell, and then Jason Lambro, also Alaskan.

Uh, so at the turnaround- Jesse, Jesse Lalonde was in there I think still... yeah, Jesse Lalonde was in there, Ned was in there. Yeah. Brennan Moore. The Lemaire rider. Brennan Moore. Uh, was that Jeff Hall? Jeff Hall.

Hall. Um- He's back from kind of being half-retired a little bit. Fast guy, Jeff Hall. Yeah, he's fast. Yep. He's fast. Um, then a couple other guys I didn't know. Um, one could climb super fast.

He was killing us on the climbs on the way back. But yeah, after the turnaround, Ned, Ned started attacking just as he did last year, but they weren't sticking and hurting quite like they, they were last year.

And I think we also knew we didn't wanna let him get any gap like, like last year, 'cause his 10 seconds last year turned into two minutes pretty quick. Yeah, sure did.

And, and you were the one right behind him last year. Yeah, and yeah, we, both him and I kind of rode alone entirely the wh- the whole way back, and that's, that's not my style. I need, I need a draft.

[laughs] So now had you, had you, your group of Alaskan guys, had you made any kind of tactical agreement to- Mm... work together to hang in there or? I, I'm sure you and Jamie did though, right?

The goal was to hang in there, and Jamie's goal was top 10, and he, he wasn't feeling so good that day. He wasn't feeling good before the race, but he stayed in the top 10 as long as he could. Mm-hmm.

Um, but yeah, the goal was to just not hurt each other, keep us all in that front pack. And it was, it was good. Four Alaskans made the, made the front pack, and yeah, four Alaskans top 10. Cool.

So what finally busted it up and, uh- Oh-... caused you to win?... that, that soft snow at the, the 20K turnaround. So the last 10K of the race, it was really soft, lots of ruts all over the place.

A lot of the 20K-ers had walked up some of the steeper hills. Mm-hmm. And so it was pr- it was really torn up, and that's, those play into my conditions perfectly. Yeah, the sloppier the better, and- So I-...

I just kept it upright. Yeah, I did hear two, uh, potential changes to next year. One is that they're gonna run separate courses. So you're saying the soft stuff played into your strengths? That definitely- Yeah...

played to my favor. Yeah, for sure. I think the other one is they're talking about 1,000 people next year as a cap. Woo. [laughs] Man. That'll be fun. It'll remain the largest fat bike event in the universe.

Yeah, and they, they have the, they have the trail there to keep them separate and handle, I think, up to 1,000. We'll see. Depends on conditions, right?

If it were just today, I mean, just three days after the race or four days after the race, it would be pretty dicey because the temperatures have been up above freezing overnight, so. Yeah.

Yeah, we rode on Sunday on the Sealey Trail, and it was in pretty good shape still, 'cause that night it had gotten down to, like, 20.

So it was still, if you're riding early in the day, that's the nice thing about the way the Birkie's set up is that if you do it early in the day and it had been cold that night, it sets up pretty well still. Oh, yeah.

Thaw, refreeze, and grooming- And packing... makes for a fast course. But I like the idea that the conditions got non-groomed on this perfectly groomed course. [laughs] And that led to, you know, the finish.

That led to Will winning. Oh, it was, yeah, it was nasty. It was- [laughs] So, so Ned took a tumble. How close was he before he went off? Him and I were together.

He actually, he kind of started the surge that broke everything up when we hit the soft snow. Uh, 'cause it was eight of us that hit the soft, soft snow together.

And Ned surged, and I was maybe two or three seconds behind him for, yeah, probably 2 or 3K. Mm-hmm. And then I think that was, that was all he had.

As soon as I got around, then I'd, I hadn't tried to get a gap, but it kind of happened, and then- Sounds like that's when he went down.

Um- Yeah, I think it was within a mile of the finish he said that he had- Right, 2K or- Yeah... one of the two things that I had heard, right? Yep. Yeah, and then in, yeah, in the last 2K the, the, the leads...

Okay, in Alaska we call them snow machines. I hear everywhere else they're snowmobiles. [laughs] So the lead, the lead snow machine, uh, he, uh,

must not have been paying full attention or I don't know what was going on, but he was slowing down and Ned was catching up, so I yelled at him to go, and I caught him off guard and he just full throttled it and rooster spray up in the air.

And so- So he took Ned out with rooster spray? [laughs] No, I, I couldn't see the trail and it was going through a corner. Wow. And I, I ended up riding off the trail at one point, and Ned caught me again.

So then luckily enough there was a, there was a steep hill right after that, and sprinted up the steep hill and got my gap back. All right. There you go. Well, that's the way she freaking goes, boys. I know.

[laughs] So, uh, what else can we look forward to from you and your team in 2016? You think you'll, uh, head up this weekend to the Talkeetna Trio and go for the world championship belt?

I was thinking of doing the trio, but yeah, we'll, we'll see. Uh, Homer Epic is in a week and a half now, so- Oh, cool... might, might head down, do the Homer Epic. They don't have any snow, so- That's a 50-mile race?

It's 100K, so 60-ish- 100K... miles. Right on. Um, but yeah, they don't have any snow, so they're thinking of making it, uh, a beach race. Oh. Which would be pretty fun. 'Cause they- It's a-...

have tons of climbing there I heard on their single track trails. Oh, it's, it's not single track, it's, it's, it's like the Birkie- Mm-hmm... just groomed ski trail. Yeah. But the h- the hills are so steep.

And yeah, you can see them from, like, five miles away and it just looks like a wall. Hmm, cool. Well, right on. We've reached the lightning round of our carnival ride. Are you ready? Sure.

And, you know, a group out of, uh, the same Houston Forest, uh, came up to us and kind of approached us about working with them to get this race together.

And, um, it's really kind of a unique place because there's actually about 85 miles of pretty much unrideable motocross trail- [laughs]... uh, that's basically unrideable on a regular bike.

And Texas is basically just kinda catching on that, hey, fat bikes are opening up this whole new area of riding here in town.

Uh, so people are getting pretty excited about it and it's really cool to have a race event there. So we're, we're really excited to be a part of it and be sponsoring it.

Uh, sand racing is really an awesome new terrain that people have not really explored very much.

Uh, we- Well, the, I think the cool thing about sand is that a lot of areas of the country that don't get snow have tons of sand. Oh, yeah.

And somewhat the experience is similar in that, that it's, you know, soft and a fat bike is the best thing. And the other thing that's similar is people like- Totally...

to party in the snow and they like to party on the beach. Oh, hell yeah. And now your- [laughs] Oh, yeah... your race, your race actually has a fat bike category, and then you have the plus versus anyone else. Yeah.

Well, it's kind of a interesting thing.

I mean, I mean, our company, Chumba USA, we make both fat bikes and mid fat bikes, and one of the things we've noticed is that just in Texas races and other races we've been to elsewhere in the country, we've seen people popping up more and more on mid fat and on fat bikes racing in just regular actual mountain bike events.

And so when we were talking about having a mid fat race or a fat bike race, well, we really wanted to have a fat bike race, and then we were like, "Well, we shouldn't just segment it so that only those riders can come out.

We wanna encourage more people to get out there and see what fat bikes are like because it's such a growing thing here, um, in our area."

Not a lot of people have seen it yet still, uh, but everybody kind of knows about it and is curious about it, but not everybody's really ridden a bike like that yet.

So we thought it'd be really cool to encourage people to just get out, and what we've done is we've basically made it so the fat bikers will be racing against fat bikers first because we feel like these guys, you know, w- if you're racing on a fat bike, you don't wanna race against a guy that's out on a regular bike.

You wanna go against guys who are churning out the same amount of wheel that you are.

And mid fat guys, they're used to racing against, uh, you know, regular bikes, but this course is different 'cause this course the mid fat really will have a huge advantage over a standard mountain bike. He said huge.

If somebody shows up on a regular cross country bike, oh yeah, it's gonna be a huge difference- [laughs]... not only in, uh, actual footprint, but in actual, actual speed.

The, the course itself is just totally laden in sand. Um, and I don't know, when you think of a sandy course, um, in my mind I think of like, okay, like beach riding or something that's, like, pretty flat.

But the reality is, like, this is a really cool course. It goes up and down. It's got a lot of variation in terrain. Now, we have a, we have a- A lot of really tight corners, a lot of patterns...

Well, I mean, we're, we're kind of a unique company in that, you know, we're really focused on a number of things, both with trail bikes, cross country bikes, and fat bikes.

And by nature of all that, we're also really interested in just bike packing and adventure riding.

And we were going down there to do a demo at the race to get people out on the race course and just try to promote the event, and we were thinking creatively of, "Hey, let's, let's get these guys out on an overnight and give this, you, you know, give a group of folks a, a chance to kinda like test the bikes out and see what that's like."

That's so cool. But what it also was, it was also a chance for people to kinda test their gear.

It kinda was a great run to meet other people trying to do the same types of experiences, 'cause it's, it's fun to bike packing around, but it's also, you, you kinda need a community for it to, to build the ideas of where to go and what gear to take and, and how to do it.

And, and it's really cool to see that culture getting started here in Texas. Right on.

That's, that's, that's so in tune with what we feel about the whole grassroots base of fat biking, adventure riding, is that it, it's coming from the people up. It's not the bike industry telling us how we should ride.

[laughs] Well, we did an awesome trip, uh, last year, uh, probably about this time of year actually, uh, where we, we drove down to Port O'Connor, which is right on, uh, just like a bay just south of the Houston/Galveston area.

And we took alpaca pack rafts about six miles out, um, early in the morning, left early, uh, paddled our way out to an, uh, basically like a barrier island that's only accessible by boat. Uh, it's called Matagorda.

And, uh, we went out there and, and just tried to ride as much of the island as we could and camp out. We had a great time. It's a really unique and beautiful place. Um, there's just loads of beachfront there.

Um, a ton of the Texas coast is public land so it's, it's very accessible for riding. Uh, but Matagorda was kind of an interesting place for us to go because it's, it's more remote.

Once you're on it, there's no, um, there's no facilities. There's no, um, you know, there's no place to go grab a, a cup of water- Where do I go tinkle?... if you're thirsty. Yeah.

The feds are crazy. Right. These, the caves, they're smaller, but the ones we went to, and they were pretty cool. Unfortunately, the light wasn't that great for photos, but it was still awesome.

We rode several miles on the lake on probably a foot of snow with a good hard crust on the top, and then every once in a while you kinda slide through.

But you could keep going and it was really cool with five-inch tires. Derek had four-inch tires. Not as happy a guy. Not as happy. [laughs] What tires, what tires were you running?

And then you would stay on top, 'cause when you crunched through, it was a lot harder, and I was just kinda like to zip on the top and find where the, where the wind blew the snow off of the little dune parts and those are kinda hard still.

And it's like, yeah, you're picking your line. Otherwise, you're working really hard if you're just like, just BM, beelining a straight line. And that's one of those things that doesn't happen every year. You know?

It, it's, it's a new s- part of this whole fat bike revolution that- Revolution... terrain that was no long, you know, never even thought about that you would take your bike to ice caves. Well, guess what?

Land managers, now bikes can go almost anywhere. And e- I would encourage people who are in charge of national parks, especially a freaking frozen one. Although, here, here's the thing about Cornucopia.

There are several thousand people who walk out there anyway, and it's like you probably- Mm... don't even wanna be there when it's like in, on a weekend.

You wanna go there off season or off, off weekend and earlier or later in the day when nobody's around, and there's just so many people there.

But there are legal caves on both Madeline Island and on the other side at, over by Washburn where you can actually ride right up to them and check them out, so. Maybe not as... It's not Old Faithful geyser. No.
