But I'm not really not hating on the, the Fu Manchu flowing. But, uh- Because nobody gives a shit. [laughs] Yeah. That's the best part. It's like I'm at my own terms of getting rid of this or playing around with it.

I've been following, uh, Sven's practice of not trimming the mustache, which means it's basically down to my waist now. [laughs] Just kidding. But the mustache wax actually does help keep it out of the way.

Well, Tom is an incredible photographer and a fat bike adventurer from Southern California. You wanna tell us about the trip you took last weekend to the Anza-Borrego Desert? Yeah. Had a little trip out there last week.

Yeah, your, your audio- [laughs] Your audio just went all trippy on us, too. Yeah, that was cool. [laughs] That was, that was freaky. Wow. So you guys, you, you did a solo overnight? Two nights?

How, how long did you go out there? Uh, it was just, it was just an overnight ride, yeah. It's... I, I've been riding out there for a couple years now, ever since I got the fat bike. It's a, um...

Actually, I started doing it to, you know, train for races and stuff since it's real sandy and it's sort of like snow, if you think about it.

But, um, the, the, the cool thing about it is, uh, you can go a lot of different places that I wouldn't even think about going with a normal mountain bike, that's for sure.

So, uh, Tom, where is that located out there in California? Is that southern, northern, central? Yeah, it's, it's about, um, it's about two hours, uh, east of, uh, San Diego, basically.

Basically, you go up over a mountain range and you drop down in there. Um, it's kind of, uh, pretty much a, a wasteland to, at least, uh, as far as most people think about it. Oh, no way.

It's, it's a, it's a picture book of, of American, American deserts, right? It has, it has desert flowers, and I saw a roadrunner there, dude. Meep, meep. Oh, there, there...

Yeah, I mean, there's all kinds of stuff out there. And, and honestly, before I started riding in there, y- I, I didn't know half of it existed. Um, I think, um, most people just go and look and, you know, you...

'Cause there's some paved roads that go through it, and you don't really see much, but as soon as you get off the roads, it's a totally different area.

I was actually in a rented Lincoln Town Car raging down a gravel road with my two kids in the [laughs] car- Oh, is that right?... when I saw, when I saw that roadrunner. So yeah, but I would- [laughs]...

I would do it all different if I were with you, Tom. So Tom, how, uh, how far are you from the Salton Sea when you're out there? Uh, actually, you, the Salton Sea is probably, like, maybe 20 miles or so.

Or actually, one, one point of it is, it, uh, where Anza-Borrego kind of butts up right to it, so it's pretty close. Gotcha.

That's, uh, it, I mean, I've been through out there, I just don't know what the actual landmarks or names of the places are, but it, it certainly- Oh... seems like a great place to ride a fat bike. It's, it's awesome.

It, it's, um, it's really unique, 'cause it's not like you've, um, you know, there's not really- Any trails that you can go on.

There's, um, some of them, uh, the washes that you go up, uh, the four-wheel drives don't even go up. Um, so it's, it's kind of like...

The best I can describe it, it's kind of like going up a frozen river is how it feels. It's kinda weird [laughs] Crazy. Well, you sure do capture some incredible photos when you're out there.

What was the area that you went? Because we're gonna share with our, uh, with our readers and our listeners in our show notes the link to your blog. Can you tell us the area that you went to for this particular trip?

Oh, sure. Um, actually, the, the first day I rode out there is, is, uh, an area that's really close to Borrego Springs, um, which is pretty much the main town that's out there.

Um, and it, it's, it's one of those places that I, I never knew, um, the, there are all these sand dunes out there, um, which is, it's kind of strange when you come upon them because you don't, uh, really think of...

You personally can't see the dunes from anywhere or any of the vantage points, and then you just kind of ride into them and it, it's kind of a unique experience.

But it was, um, right, uh, let's see, near the, what they call the Borrego Badlands.

Um, there's, there's some, uh, there's some viewpoints that overlook, um, this one area, which, um, I didn't actually ride that one this time.

I kind of was right down in the Badlands, um, which was kind of an interesting experience. Uh, so that was the first day. Mm-hmm. Uh, um, and then the, the cool thing about Borrego is you, you can...

They, they have some rules about where you can camp, but you can p- pretty much camp anywhere you want to. Um, so that... Which is, and it's free [laughs] which is even better [laughs] Sure.

Um, but what I did is I went, I went over to an area called, uh, Fish Creek Wash, um, which is, it's, it's really spectacular when you, when you enter into it 'cause there's this, this, there...

You basically go right through, um, a mountain range. The, uh, the water has cut a, this huge canyon through which you wouldn't even think that it exists out there.

Um, and riding, you ride up the wash for maybe 20 miles or so, and then there's, there's some other areas out there called, uh, the Mud Caves,

um, which I didn't really go into the caves, but there are some slot canyons that, uh, it's, it's a really cool area. And is that where that, that, the concretions come from? Are those cave flowstone, uh, formations?

Yes. I was really- Yeah. They're, yeah, they're really, um, they're really interesting, um... I, I, I mean, I'm not a geologist or anything [laughs], but they're, they're... When you look at them, you, you, um...

At first I thought some of them were petrified wood, 'cause they get cut in half. Mm-hmm. But I, I guess it, it, it's, it's a, um, it's some sort of sedimentary rock, um, formation.

Um, 'cause I, I think that whole area was once a, a, a sea floor is what it was. Mm-hmm. And then it got uplifted by a few faults. Um, first of all, petrified wood, and they...

Some of the areas that I, I f- you know, you, you find fossils out there. I... They found some really huge fossils of, you know, camels and horses and that sort of thing. Hmm, cool. Really cool.

You take some, uh, really beautiful shots when you're out there. Uh, when you're traveling- Thank you...

on your fat bike, what, what sort of gear do you take for your camera equipment that, uh, you put together for those backcountry trips? Yeah.

I, I, I use a, a Panasonic, uh, LX5 that I picked up a few years ago, um, which for, for what I do, it, it does a great job. I've, I've done some other trips.

Uh, in fact, the first trip I ever took with a bike, I, you know, I dragged along a DSLR and some lenses and, uh, it, it, it just kinda crimped my style [laughs] Sure.

There's not much room on the bike really, so that- No [laughs]... completely makes sense. And, um, yeah. And, and a lot of the, you know, a lot of the photos that I do take, I, I've, you know, taken...

Not that I'm a big racer or anything, but I always take a camera along when I'm doing races.

Um, so it's, it's just a heck of a lot easier for me to, to take along the, you know, a, a, you know, just a, a point and shoot handheld. It just works a lot better. Oh, yeah.

So, uh, tell us, uh, about the bags that you're using and maybe what kind of bike you're riding these days. Yeah. Actually, I've been riding a, a 907 for about five years now, I think.

I, I actually won the frame, um, at a, uh, at the pre-race raffle for the Arrowhead 135- Oh, cool... a few years ago. Yeah.

I, yeah, those, those, they, those guys, they, they have a lot of great support for the, the, you know, the racers and stuff. I, I really love the bike too. Yes. Um- It's a great bike. Yeah.

It's, um- They, they make a great aluminum hardtail, and we like those guys. Yeah, absolutely. They're cool dudes. Yeah. Yeah. And what, what- They do a great job... what kind of bags are you using?

Uh, I, pretty much everything is, is a Revelate, uh, Designs. You know, depending on what I'm doing, you know, for the winter stuff, you know, I, I, I tend to use, uh, you know, a seat bag.

For, for what I was doing on this ride in the desert, it was mostly, uh, you know, it was just a frame bag from them also. It's custom, uh, fit to that frame. But it was main- mainly just to carry water [laughs] Yeah.

Yeah, water in those trips, I'm, I'm sure, is the, the, the limiter of where you can go is just how much water you can get.

Uh, I imagine that there might be opportunities where you could, like, you could extend trips by caching water, et cetera out there. Yeah. And, and the, the way, um, the way Borrego or Anza Borrego is, it, it's...

I, I've always wanted to do this ride even though I've, I've never had the chance to do it. But y- if you start at the, the north end of the park and drop right down in, and it, it's...

You, you have maybe, like, 40 miles or so before you hit places that you can actually get water again. Mm-hmm. Um, so it's not too, too bad, um, as far as the water situation goes, but I...

Um, you know, I always, I always l- wanna say to you guys, we do not put a gun to your head to buy any of this [laughs] stuff. We just keep you up with what the news is going on.

And I think that on the other side of that, on the other side of what, what, what, is this Japanese word kaizen, which means continuous improvement. This is what... Bikes are better today than they were 20 years ago.

True that. Uh, they are better today than they were 10 years ago. So, and- and obviously in the, in the fat bike segment, to- the bikes are better today than they were five years ago. Two years ago. Two years ago, sure.

Uh, so that's kind of the why. Continuous improvement. Do you, do you have to go out there and buy all of this new stuff? No. [laughs] No, you do not.

Uh, you know, you wanna try it, you wanna rent a bike, and you know, there's a lot of different ways to ease yourself into this stuff.

Or just rock that old 26 single speed rigid bike 'til it breaks, and then buy somebody else's used one that they've put aside because they have to buy all this crap.

We've got a buddy that keeps riding Zebra Kenkos, and he commutes to work- [laughs]... on it. He just won't give 'em up. He keeps buying 'em. It's like, "Where did you find a Zebra Kenko again?" 'Cause they're out there.

That's got 27-inch wheels on it. [laughs] They're out there in people's garages. [laughs] Behind all of the different things that- 'cause people tend to wanna buy the newest thing. And I- I have a Krampus, a 29+ bike.

Am I gonna go out and buy a new 26+, B+ hardtail with a fork? No. I- I am not. Mm. I am not. I might try, uh, I might do some testing of some 26.5, uh, tires on that Krampus, and I- 27.5. Right, sorry, 27.5.

Or a B+. B+. Or a 650B+. [laughs] Double Bs. Or six fatties, or- [laughs] I've got double Bs. [laughs] Well- We're kind of a different story, though, 'cause we get to try a lot of new stuff, and we don't have to buy it.

I, th- one of the things that I really am intrigued by the B+ size, it's the same diameter as a 29 tire with all the benefits of the width of the 29+ tire. Sounds interesting to me.

Yeah, and you know, when we were in California, it amazed me how fat bikes weren't even spotted on the beach. We did, we did a beach ride, a nice, long, several-hour beach ride, and didn't see one fatty track.

But I think what's gonna make people look at the wider tires is that, that B+, 650B+ size tire, three-inch, 3.25, because I think it makes a lot more sense on the trails they have out there-

And maybe that'll be the gateway drug to getting him into the big fatness. Yeah.

And I think that I'm really totally intrigued about the B2XL size that the Trek Bike is using, that 27.5 [laughs] B2XL. [laughs] Okay. That's right, B2XL.

So a fat bike tire on a B+ rim. Right, which is a four-inch- Right, a four-... 27.5. Right. We s- we had, we had pictures of the, uh, of the prototype tires on the site.

So- That actually s- [laughs] that actually said prototype on them. [laughs] So now, what do we call the 26++ well over five-inch tire that's coming from Vee Tire? Uh- 'Cause that thing was massive. Uh- 26++...
