Weekly Dose of Fat, show number 57 for Friday May 22nd, 2015. [gentle music] Good evening.
0:17
Certain fat bike executives feel it would be a little unkind to present this show without just the word of friendly warning. Well, we've warned you.
0:31
From River West Milwaukee, where we're all so excited we're vibrating, actually shaking like an old rock polisher, it's the Weekly Dose of Fat.
0:43
And now, two men who put the rad in radio, it's Sven and Gomez. Howdy, everybody. Well, I feel rad. [laughs] Are you vibrating? Well, not really. [laughs] Working on that.
1:00
[laughs] And- I am... we're, we are joined in the studio today by Mr. JK Lemon. Yes, I'll be doing like the Bud Melman and the Chris Elliot- Bud Melman, the guy that did the- The, the, the Trans-... Transpo. Okay...
1:13
the attempting of the lift. Okay. Or David Letterman. Bye bye, Dave. Yeah, Dave's- Bye, Dave... out of here. Dave- Dave-... Dave's out of here. Bananas. [laughs] Uh-oh. Are bananas good on this show, or is it bad?
1:30
It's good. It's the Marlon Brando game. Ah. Chris Elliot doing the banana dance. Well- Bananas... well. On the island. Well the- I'm, I'm all misty because of it.
1:41
[laughs] The Weekly Dose of Fat is brought to you by our friends at Surly Bikes. Surly makes steel bikes that are infused with freedom, all kinds [laughs] of other hippie nonsense. Learn more at surlybikes.com.
1:56
Thank you, Mr. Surly. Moving right along, what's on the show this week, JK? Our special guest is Scott Quiring, here to tell us all about Jordan Wakeley's new race bike and fat tandems.
2:09
We drink a beer from our beer shaman, Julio Dotcom. We'll have the Weekly Dose of Fat. Ken or Andy is gonna be calling in about the world premiere of the Fat Camp Podcast. Hosted right here on Fat Bike Radio. Indeed.
2:25
And we'll have links from all parts of the internets. So just to be clear, Jordan Wakeley doesn't have a fat tandem, but I betcha he would win [laughs] even if he rode- [laughs]... the fat tandem by his self.
2:40
By his own bonesman. This time. So, uh, welcome to the beer thing. Is it already beer time? [bell ringing] Beers. Beer segment. So I, uh,
2:53
we're doing this big rack shootout, which means I'm slanging racks all over Northern Illinois and Wisconsin.
3:00
So, uh, I met Julio Dotcom out in the woods, and we rode bikes, and we traded tires, and we shucked racks, and he gave me a present of Zombie Dust [drum beating] by Three Floyds.
3:16
Both Julio Dotcom and I are down, are, was bonded down there in Indiana, right where this beer is made. It's probably the most toxic place on earth. [laughs] They, they infuse their beer with a little toxicity.
3:31
So this here, uh, beer is an American pale ale called Zombie Dust, and it's supposed to be bad ass, dude. It's got a rad label. Mad, oh, very rad. [bottle opening] Oh. Oh. Jeez, that sounded like a rocket. Yeah.
3:46
It sounded like a- I didn't even have my glasses on... rocket. [laughs] And I got hit before. [laughs] I'm gonna fuck somebody up doing that. Uh, it's smell- Man, it's piney, tangerine, grapefruity smell.
4:01
It's supposed to be gushing. According to Beer Advocate, this is the perfect beer. Perfect. 8,271 people said, "Perfecto." The bros said, "Mm, not world-class, just outstanding at a 90." What's up, bros? Bros.
4:18
Yeah, it checks in at 6.2 alcohoozies and 60 international bitterness girlfriend units. I still haven't figured out. [laughs] Sexual chocolate. Without the chocolate, though. [laughs] Oh, my God.
4:37
That's pretty good. It's tasty. Mm-hmm. I like that it was, uh, added into Beer Advocate by Hans Gruber. [laughs] Yeah, I noticed that. [laughs] All right. Wow. Formerly known as Centigraft.
4:50
Yeah, it's, they did a, a, some kind of collaboration with, uh, the comic industry with this rad graphic. Yeah, it's almost like a badass-looking Skeletor, but- Cheers, boys. Clink. And [bottles clinking]
5:05
you Philistines are drinking this out of the bottle. That's the way it goes. [laughs] That's the way she goes, boys. [laughs] The way she fucking goes. It's, it's not festival season- [laughs]...
5:14
so I don't have, I don't- That's the way she-... 'cause I always be carrying around little plastic cups. I really, I really, really thought up that, that line in, uh, Stewie's voice.
5:23
"You Philistines are drinking this American pale ale"... Yeah. No. It was better. I don't do a good Stewie, but- No... you get the whole gist of it. [laughs] Yes.
5:35
[laughs] I don't do it very good, but yeah, that would've been funny. Well- What?... this week's beer buzz is sponsored by Uncle Nick's Bead Slip. Professional mechanics agree Uncle Dick is bad to the bone.
5:47
Bone, bone, bone, bone, bone, bone. Check him out at uncledicksbikeshop.com. Hey, we'll be right back with this week's radio guest, Scott Quiring, right after this. You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio.

to take advantage of this limited time offer. Go on, take a shot at our mayor while he's down. Hey, please welcome to the show everybody, Mr. Scott Quiring. Hey, Scott. How's it going?
6:36
Oh, it's going good. I'm glad to be on the show. Um, I guess, out of the gun, out of, you know, I have to say
6:44
right from the start that I was really happy with some of the coverage that Gomez was able to do at NABS last spring, so that was pretty cool. Well, right on. Ooh, a pat on the back for Gomez. I know.
6:56
Somebody, somebody read my article. [laughs] [laughs] So for those of you that- Kind of...
7:04
that don't know Scott, Scott is a custom bike fabricator from freesaw Michigan, with a ton of experience building 29ers, 29 plus fat bikes and fat tandems.
7:18
And, uh- Scott just built a 29 plus tandem race rig for Arrowhead 135 champion, Jordan Wakeley. So it's, we asked Scott to come on the show to talk about Jordan's new rig, and, uh, tell us what's up for Mr.
7:32
Jordan, Scott. Okay. Well, um, I guess maybe it might help to just kinda discuss a little bit who Jordan Wakeley is as far as- Oh, yeah... a racer. Um, you did mention the Arrowhead 150, him being the champion of that.
7:47
Um, he also has just been like a dominant fat biker at races in the Midwest here. And so, um, in the summertime he likes to race the pro class races and do cross-country events. Uh-huh.
8:01
So, um, pretty much he kinda came to us, I would say like last fall, and was like looking at our 29er plus bike- Mm-hmm... and being like, "Whoa, that, that's a pretty cool bike." So essentially,
8:15
Jordan had already kinda discovered himself that these plus size wheels were wor- really working well for him. Right.
8:22
He came from riding a Borealis fat bike that he had 29 plus tires on that he was, he fell in love with and won some races on, and then found himself without a team and you guys picked him up, right? That is correct.
8:39
I think also, you know, for Jordan, the appeal to ride one of our frames was that he was really looking for a cross-country type bike. Mm-hmm. You know, there's different types of plus type bikes, you know.
8:52
Uh, you can have the adventure sort, you can have the, um, oh, the fun trail type 29er plus bikes.
9:00
But what Jordan was really looking for was a cross-country race bike, where everything was optimized as far as the, the 29er platform to the kind of racing needs that he wa- you know- Sure...
9:15
was going to encounter while he's racing. So his frame is not like a Krampus, all laid back and stretched out and, and slack in the front. It's probably a lot more steep and quicker handling, right? That is correct.
9:29
Yeah, so like, you know, basically with this bike design that we did for him, he has the ability to adjust his head tube angle and he runs it really steep, um, so it's quicker turning. Mm-hmm. A more nimble bike.
9:42
And then his bike also has a lot shorter chainstays. Yeah, very cool. Now you mentioned the fork. This fork has a rainbow trout paint job. Did, did you...
9:53
I, I've been to your shop and I know, I probably know the answer to this, that you probably painted this yourself, so I'll [laughs] just ask the question.
10:00
[laughs] Did you do the painting of, of that beautiful rainbow trout fork on that bike? Yeah, we actually did that in the shop. It was a little bit of a joke because, uh, Jordan comes from the Grayling, Michigan area.
10:12
Right. So, like, he's, uh, you know, they're really big into fishing there and there's a lot of rivers and streams and stuff. Mm-hmm. And he had spent a lot of time canoe racing- All right. Right, right...
10:22
um, growing up. So we were like, "This would be a perfect little trademark for him." Yeah. Jordan is, is like wilderness man. He, he's truly a, an aquatic lumberjack or something- [laughs]...
10:34
something crazy like that, [laughs] where his job was to, uh, paddle canoes up the streams and to cut trees from the streams to keep them all clear. At least that's, that's, uh, that's the story I'm telling right now.
10:48
[laughs] That's the legend of, of Jordan Wakeley. The legend of Jordan Wakeley. So Scott- Yeah, I definitely agree... with, uh, with Jordan, he's a pretty big guy. He's tall, and, uh, obviously he has a lot of power.
10:58
Did that, did, did his s- physical size present any kind of, uh, challenges when you designed the frame for him? Um, not so much.
11:06
I mean, I've had a long history of building, you know, basically hundreds of frames for bigger, beefier, stronger dudes.
11:14
Um, Jordan tends to be a little bit rough on his frames, from my understanding, so we chose to work with titanium for him because it would give him the lightness that he would want for the cross-country racing, but also the, the toughness, you know?
11:28
Like, titanium's a very strong material, so that's, that's why we chose titanium. Um, just pretty much the optimal material for, for building a frame for him.
11:39
And you mentioned that you'd built really short chainstays compared to some of the other, um, 29 plus bikes out there. Did you have to do any custom fabricating, like of the yoke area and stuff to make that happen?
11:51
Yeah, we still used the, the 6/4 plate style box yoke that I've, I've had on my other fat bikes and stuff. So we, we did do that. We optimized it. Basically,
12:01
I think he's running 17 inch chainstays, which is fairly short, but you know, y- you actually have to balance that out with the proper head tube angle, too.
12:10
So, you know, we give him some short chainstays, but we also balanced that out with the front end of the bike. So, you know, I mean, it's like
12:19
you can make really short chainstays but then ha- have a slack head tube angle and it wouldn't do you a whole lot of good, you know? It's better to have more of a balanced position, you know, on the bike. Sure.
12:30
Well, you got a lot of experience doing that, for sure. I, I'm sure he's very happy with it. I don't know about you- [laughs]... but I, I keep on seeing, uh, since, since Jordan got this bike, I keep on seeing him
12:43
not just on the podium, [laughs] but at the top of the podium of a lot of races. So, uh, do you have, do you have a list of, of the races that the new bike has won?
12:53
Well, I think, uh, most of his racing has j- just been in Michigan so far- Mm-hmm... and, and he's got about five races that he's just totally dominated and ripped people's legs off.
13:02
[laughs] Um, you know, he, he started off at the Yankee Sping- Springs Time Trial, and he probably took about three minutes off of second place, which was Mike Simonson, who's- Oh, yeah... no slouch. I mean- Oh, yeah...
13:13
this is a guy who travels around and does the N- NUE series. Um, then- The Simonator [laughs]... a few weeks ago... Yeah.
13:21
A few weeks ago, you know, Jordan, uh, won the Mud, Sweat, and Beers event, which had about 800 participants in that race. So, I mean, he's definitely, uh,
13:32
proven good to his word as far as being a strong racer and putting his bike through the paces. I think it really helps him to have a good custom bike. We talked a little bit about the frame and the fork.
13:42
Um, what else did you decide would be good componentry for his bike? Um, it's pretty basic. I mean, um, we're using just regular mountain bike cranks. Um, the, uh, Race Face cinch Next FL cranks. Mm-hmm.
13:57
Um, he uses a X- XO1 drivetrain, you know. Um, so it, it's a one-by system. With the 29er+ wheels, he, he turns a massive 36-tooth front ring- Ooh...
14:10
um, which is pretty big considering those wheels are actually, like, 30 inches- Right... um, in diameter. So, um, he's riding that pretty fast. [laughs] Yeah, I bet. [laughs] Yeah, yeah. Just, uh, I ride a 30. Yeah.
14:24
That's kind of where I'm at on my 29+2 with the one-by is a 30. [laughs] A 30. Six teeth on the front is, like... What is that? Like, 12 teeth in the back, right? So, oh, yo, that's, that's fast. Yeah. Well, very cool.
14:36
Yep. So when we, when we talked earlier in the week on the phone, you told me that you're re- staying really busy after, uh, NABS with fat tandem builds. Can you tell us a little bit about...
14:49
We talked a little bit about, you were saying how the fat and plus-sized tandem really tames the beast that is tandem riding single track and whatnot. Talk a little bit about that. Yeah, um, for sure.
15:03
You know, I've done a few, few, uh, fat bike tandems and 29er+ tandems, and kind of what we're finding is, as we get into building these, you know, we're at the tip of the spear, so to speak, of getting out there and trying these designs.
15:16
So, you know, when you're tandem riding, it's not uncommon to have a 400-pound team, and so then plus a bike, you might be up to 450 pounds riding through the woods.
15:26
Well, when you're in the soft terrain and stuff like that, it's like with the skinnier tires, the two-inch tires and stuff on a normal 29er mountain bike, you're always finding yourself, like, concentrating really hard not to knife it into the dirt or go sideways or go down.
15:43
Well, when you switch up to a 29er+ wheel, a three-inch tire, or the full fat, like a four-inch fat tire, you know, you just have a lot more contact patch on the ground. And so I think, uh, it's just, it's just like
16:00
the advancement of the t- tandem going from 26 inches to 29 inches.
16:05
It's kinda like the same jump up, but, uh, as far as your control and traction, it's just that you're going from 29-inch tire, a two-inch wide tire or two-and-a-quarter inch t- uh, tire to a three-inch, and it, um, it just gives you that much more added control, safety, and braking, you know?
16:25
Sure. And, uh, I think- I can think of a, a similar analogy of braking on tandems is when you went from cantilevers or V brakes to disc brakes.
16:35
It's like the technology caught up with the extra weight and size that a tandem brings to the off-road cycling picture. It's, uh, it, it kinda is the... Do you think that makes sense? Oh, for sure.
16:52
Um, I think basically a lot of technology has improved the way we can ride bikes, you know, lighter drivetrains, lighter handlebars, lighter, you know, better brakes.
17:04
All these things are advancing, but the tire contact patch hasn't really grown. Mm-hmm. So, you know, it's like trying to drive down the highway with, uh, your low beams on at 70 miles per hour. You're just overdriving,
17:18
uh, your headlights. Sure. Well, all these light, fast bikes, you got this two, two-and-a-quarter inch tire, you know, on your 29er. You're overdriving that contact patch, you know? It's, like,
17:32
kind of a little bit scary, so, in, in some situations. You know, if you lose traction, you're gonna biff it. Oh, yeah. So, um- And it's, it's r-... and I think-... it's not very pretty when you see a- [laughs]...
17:43
an off-road tandem crash. No, for sure. Right, exactly. I actually saw some... I actually saw a pair, uh, endo their tandem at the Chequamegon 40 at gravel road speed.
17:56
It was kind of a transition from the road to a big downhill with baby heads on it, and I could [laughs] not believe how high in the air that stoker was- [laughs]... when they got launched down that hill.
18:09
Oh, my God, it was, it was, it was high. How horrible. Horrible. Um, Scott, you mentioned- Yeah, that- You, you-... that sounds bad[laughs]
18:17
You were saying that, uh, you know, doing these tandems, uh, with the new tire sizes is you're kind of on the cutting edge of it, um, and that there's 450 pounds of bike and riders.
18:27
Uh, how are the tires themselves holding up to that kind of abuse? Um, they hold up excellent actually, so do the rims. Um, you can just run conventional spoking patterns really.
18:39
The actual tire itself, being that it's four inches in diameter, you know, you do have to add more air pressure than, say, if you're just riding a single.
18:47
Um, but the nice thing is the bike is so padded, you know what I mean? And the rim is so padded. These fat bike tires are taking up a lot of abuse that would normally be translated into the frame, you know?
19:02
So, or the wheel set in, in, in itself, you know what I mean? Uh, we haven't seen any problems with breaking spokes or, you know, breaking hub flanges or anything or, or rims denting. Um, so- I know, that's kinda crazy.
19:17
That's- I, I don't see that as being an issue. Uh, the... We, we had that thought a while back when all of the Holy rims started coming out.
19:24
I'm like, "Well, they're pushing the weight, and then we're, will that mean that all of a sudden we're gonna see a lot of taco'd wheels?" And you just don't see it.
19:32
The tire really does eat up a lot of the abuse on the trail. So that brings- Yeah, uh- Speaking of tires, what kind of tires are Jordan, is Jordan running on his race rig?
19:45
Um, well, we have, you know, there's actually quite a limited selection of 29 plus tires right now. I think there's only six of them out there or something. Yeah. Yeah, something like that.
19:53
So I mean, I don't, I don't think by, you know, when he's competing against these other guys running 29er wheels, you know, he's kind of a little bit at a disadvantage 'cause he just has to pick one tire that he thinks he can do it all, you know?
20:06
So, um, we f- we outfitted him with Nards. They seem to roll pretty well. Um, but he also likes to run that Bontrager Cub Cabra- Cub Cabra. Yeah... you know, tire. That's a great tire.
20:18
And, uh, that, that one, you know, that seems to be a good one for leaf, leaf, leaf type riding or- Mm-hmm... black dirt, maybe a little bit of mud.
20:27
Um, whereas, you know, in, in my opinion, a- actually, I think the Nards roll a little bit better, but, you know, don't have some of the gripping characteristics of the Cub Cabra.
20:36
So, um- Yeah, shoulder knobs- So- That, on that Cub Cabra they've got little- Yeah, yeah, not as much shoul- shoulder knobs. Well, thanks for being on the show, Scott. You just are awesome.
20:48
And people that have not seen Scott's frames, go to fatbike.com and do a little search or w- maybe we'll put a, a link to, uh, a search for, uh, Scott's work.
21:00
The yoke that we talked about is a work of art and makes his frames very unique. The, the welds are world-class, just perfect, beautiful scallops.
21:13
The guy works in steel, ti, and has made stainless steel bikes, and then, uh, uh, not only an, an accomplished racer, but, uh, just a great advocate for fat biking in Michigan over there. And an all around swell guy.
21:29
Indeed. [laughs] I'm gonna- Thank you... I'm gonna camp in your backyard now. Yeah, we should probably- Oh... go, go over there and get a ride in with those guys. No, that'd be no problem.
21:39
We got plenty of space for you and plenty of good outdoors activities for you out here. Killer, man. So- You haven't seen anything more funny than a fat guy trying to get out of a pack raft with a bike attached to it.
21:53
[laughs] "I can't get up. Can't get up." [laughs] "Anybody give me a hand here?" [laughs] So you, you got that to look forward to. Very good.
22:05
Well, you gotta make sure you, gotta make sure if you're coming to ride around here that, uh, you know, you got the, uh,
22:12
plus size tires and the fat, fat bike tires 'cause it, uh, makes riding in Michigan a lot more enjoyable.
22:20
Um, you know, in, in Jordan's own words, he loves how flickable, you know, a 29er plus bike is and how much he can drive it hard in the corners and brake less and with more speed and not have to worry about the sand. So,
22:34
and we have a lot of sand here. Heck yeah. Probably explains a lot why, uh, both fat bikes and, uh, 29 plus bikes are a little bit more ahead of the curve here in the Midwest than they are out on the West Coast.
22:46
When we were at, uh, Sea Otter, it was funny, not many fat bikes. Yeah. And, uh, people- Well-...
22:52
people out in the West just don't seem to understand them yet even, and, uh, it's obvious that the conditions here kinda drive the fact that they're the, the bike for the soft conditions. Right.
23:05
Well, if we gave them 148 inch or 180 inches of snow in a winter, right, they'd be kinda scratching their head what to do.
23:13
[laughs] You know, fat bikes really help to bring, bring the shoulder seasons into play in the winter and getting out there and, and stuff. So it's, it's good. It's awesome.
23:23
I love fat bikes and 29er plus bikes and plus bikes in general. Killer, dude. Well, thanks for being on the show. You rock. Ken and Andy are, uh- Okay. Thank you... Ken and Andy are going to, uh, do a little show.
23:37
You guys should, uh, they should have you on the show. Their Fat Camp Podcast is, uh- Yeah, I'll have to talk to him about that... is coming up. [laughs] All right, bro. Sounds good.
23:46
Next time, next time you see me- Well, thanks for having me... next time you see me, I'll just be camped in your backyard. [laughs] Okay. Sounds good to me. Don't, don't be alarmed.
23:53
[laughs] I'll give you the key and you can, you can take a shower. All right. I'll probably need a shower by then. [laughs] Exactly. All right, dude. We'll see ya. All right. Thank you. Goodbye. Okie dokie.
24:08
[laughs] That was Scott Quiring, ladies and gentlemen. You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio. Hi, this is Jordan Langley. When I'm not winning races, I'm listening to Sven and Gomez on Fat Bike Radio.
24:24
This is your weekly dose of fat. Welcome back to the radio program. Here's Gomez with a surprise for JK. Not much of a surprise anymore, is it? [laughs] He's acting all surprised. And blushing or something.
24:41
[laughs] So when I was down at- Peeing on the floor [laughs] When I was down at NABS- Just squirt [laughs]... in Louisville, I met Andrew from ATM Handmade Goods, and, uh, we talked about, you know, maybe him doing
24:55
a frame bag for us. And it was actually for me, but I, I have like two of everything. [laughs] And- Yeah, you can't have any more stuff. [laughs] You just don't have anywhere to put it. Well,
25:08
and to be fair, it, it'd be nice to see what somebody else going... I've already gone through the custom bag making a couple of times, that whole process of the creative process at the template process. So
25:22
we are going to have JK go through that process with Andrew, and Andrew makes these crazy cool bags that, like, we'll put a link in the show notes of the coverage we did at NABS, but he had bags that had, like, a clear panel in them that had like...
25:40
It was specially pasted s- space so that you could have six beers in there. So you could actually have, like, six different beers or six PBRs or- And they can look out into the world. Exactly. It's very humane of it.
25:53
[laughs] Yeah. But I'm thinking like the urban sombrero of, you know, the, whether the JK Living version of a frame bag for your new Schlick Cycles. Is it, is that a Tatanka or is it- Tatanka. Tatanka. Tatanka. Tatanka.
26:06
Tatanka. Cool, and it's, it's [mic feedback] I think, you know, he can absolutely do something color-wise that mimics or contrasts or...
26:15
Anyway, it's, the ball is in your hands, and, uh, you know, he'll write a couple- [laughs] Excuse me. He'll write a couple, couple articles about that. Oh, yeah.
26:25
And, uh, and- Yeah, and then it would be, you know, transferring from back to- Back, back to bike... back to crotch. Yeah, we talked about that.
26:33
[laughs] How your, how your whole backpack then would become, you know, the flask holder on there. I mean- Oh, yeah... and this guy can make, like, separate pockets just for your flask holder. Nice. He's a talented guy.
26:45
Yeah, and his, uh, his- And gorgeous. If you wanna check him out- Really cool... uh, you can see atmhandmadegoods.com. I know. That's one of the... We'll have a link in the show notes there.
26:55
So it's coming up on Memorial Day here. I know. It's like a week early. Oh. I keep thinking it's the following weekend, but it's early- It's 'cause there's-... this one... five, five Saturdays in, in May this week.
27:05
Well- All this month, so... that's right. Have you guys been crashing on your bikes like they've been crashing at the Indy 500 qualifying? [laughs] No. Holy mackerel. No. Yeah, this is a Memorial Day.
27:14
Speaking of, speaking of endos on a tandem- Oh... boy, Helio, boy, doing a flippy-flip. Yeah. But, uh- Yeah... you guys got, uh, destinations? What are you doing over the, the holiday?
27:23
I'm staying close to home, and, uh, we're gonna have a barbecue with a big freaking pan of paella, me and my Mexicali friends.
27:31
Gonna get together and live like Basque terrorists there in, uh, West OSHA, and ride bikes 'cause, you know, I- Flicking saffron like it was indiscriminately. [laughs] Damn right. Yeah.
27:43
Hey, way to, way to make that foodie reference, man. Oh, oh, yeah. Yeah. All right. Occasional foodie. [laughs] Occasional Mike strikes again. Mike is the moody foodie. [laughs] I think that should be your new website.
27:54
[laughs] Yes, sir. Moodyfoodie.com Thanks to some of my friends, I have, in, uh, in Kenosha County, I have kick-ass trails very close to my house, so I think I will just brap right around there. Right on. Yeah.
28:10
I think I'm gonna continue- How about you? I'm gonna continue my, uh, my plus bike, you know, since we got this plusbikes.com thing going. Yeah. Oh, yeah. There's, there's stuff to write about again, and, uh,
28:20
I'm enjoying my- Oh, you stopped riding? [laughs] You, you're the... How... You never stopped riding. Uh, no, I, I haven't- You never stopped riding. I, I really haven't ridden my 29 plus bike since last fall. Yeah.
28:34
So I was like, "Well, it's kinda like the weather to ride it in now," so. I really, we did an urban assault thing on Sunday where we were out there for 11 hours. Yeah.
28:43
And, uh, it was a, it's a great platform for just terrorizing a city. [laughs] I agree. I agree. And I, I think we only got followed once by a guy in a silver pickup.
28:55
"Hey, dude, I don't know if you're just grooving on what we were doing or you were mad at us," [laughs] but- Oh, yeah, yeah. I noticed that, yeah, in my, uh,
29:02
my rear, my rear look back, like what, what that was- I'm just sorry you couldn't follow us where we went because- Yeah... that's part of what these bikes are good at, is, uh, off-road activity, which we did plenty of.
29:13
Yeah, and I ended up doing, like, nice little, uh, curb slide. [laughs] Oh, yeah. That was rad. We were going, we were going through a, a parking structure just- Mm...
29:22
as part of the thing, and it was kinda damp in there, and he did, like, a skateboard curb grind with the back of the bike just, like, brap. Karma. Yeah. And sweep- And came out of it. Didn't eat it. And with...
29:32
Yeah, didn't- Yeah... didn't eat it. Yeah. Yes. OG Alger was behind him. He was like, "Oh, yeah." [laughs] He's like, "Dude, what are you gonna do?" [laughs] O- O- Nice...
29:42
uh, OG had one of, um, Hayes' or Manitou's new, uh, Magnums on his Krampus- Oh, really?... which he's digging a lot. Very cool. We gotta get him, uh... We're, we'll have to do an in-depth interview- Right on...
29:56
with the OG. I got, uh, one of the new 20- Probing questions like, uh- Does your arm hurt from hooking bottles? [laughs] Grabbing at, at beer bottles. [laughs] Beer bottles.
30:05
[laughs] What kind of toast do you, what kind of toast do you like, man? You like toast with that jam? Um- [laughs]
30:12
And I, I picked up one of the new 27.5, 27 plus 6 Fatty B+ Manitou Magnum forks, which is going to go on an Ape,
30:23
uh, because this, uh, we're testing that theory that the four-inch fat bike sized- Praise the Lord Uh- Somebody had to test it... yeah, four-inch fat bike tire and this, this 27.5 by three. Bam, [burps] I'm ready.
30:39
So that'll be happening within the next week or so. I gotta get some hubs. I'm trying to figure out what kind of hubs I'm going with. Hey, you guys. Beer stop. I'm tired. [bell rings] Oh. Top of the hill.
30:56
Gomez has to go potty. He's doing the dance as he's leaving. [laughs] And- Yeah, but this weekend I'm gonna end up, uh, checking out the trolls up in s- Mount Horeb, Wisconsin.
31:10
I'm not really familiar with anything in that area, but- There's some cool stuff over there. Yeah, I'm gonna look- Definitely... yeah, I'm gonna- I-... just tear around... I've been to Mount Horeb a lot and
31:19
they have trolls. [laughs] Yeah. I, I've been s- I'm intrigued by that more than anything. It was the first place they had a, uh, Duluth Trading Company outlet store, too. Ah. Oh, and w- Which is some nice gear.
31:29
I like their pants. And with trolls, there's always a bridge. That's true. There's always a bridge. And what do you do with a bridge? There's always a bridge. You go under the bridge. Mm-hmm.
31:37
If they would let me ride my bike inside Cave of the Mounds, that would be pretty kick-ass. [laughs] Yeah. [laughs] I think we have to go- I might, I might have to just, like, buzz the tower- [laughs]...
31:44
and see what I can [laughs] get away with. I think we have to go down to Kentucky to legally ride in a cave apparently. Oh, yeah. That's rad. Oh, yeah. But, uh, yeah, so Memorial Day, I'm gonna go see Book of Mormon.
31:57
That's cool. That's cool. I, it, that's only this week, right? I, you know, I'm not sure- Okay... of the schedule of it Okay... uh, my wife picked up the tickets, but, uh, my family history is Mormon.
32:07
Uh, although, I am not of that tribe. Uh, it's definitely, I know a lot about the history of the whole thing, and it's gonna be kind of interesting to see how- Yeah, yeah...
32:19
how, how Trey Parker and Matt Stone make a little jest of it. That's cool, yeah. And I just started reading Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and the sc- Study in Scarlet is referenced. Oh. Did I miss anything?
32:32
The Mormon- [laughs] Mormons. I- Mormons and, Mormons and trolls. I hope- Mormons, trolls, and, uh, mounds... I hope he didn't miss the toilet. [laughs] No, no. My, my aim is true here. [laughs] Pew.
32:47
Where it lands, there it shall be buried. And it's, uh- So did we, did we delve into the links yet? No, I could, uh, give a shout-out to Marcus Downey, 'cause it's his birthday today. Oh, yeah, Mark Stoney's birthday.
32:59
You know that guy has, he's on his third fat bike now, and he hasn't gotten rid of any of them. Really? Yeah, he's building another fat bike to take out to California, where he works, like, four months of the year, so.
33:10
He shall be a trendsetter in California- Right?... with that bike.
33:13
I'm thinking he can start spreading the love out there, 'cause there, he's, uh, not far from Stinson Beach, which is a, a pretty nice spot there north of San Francisco. Cool. Oh. Man, you know the new bike I want.
33:25
I, I really wanna try that FSR Specialized, dude. The Stumpy? Yeah. Oh. I want one of those. Replace the Turner Burner? Yeah. And take it somewhere out west there that... Oh, here goes JK.
33:40
[burps] Oh, no, he's d- he's beer stopping. [burps] Well, I, I could use a beer. Sure. I'll take a beer. Why not? Born in a barn.
33:49
[door slams] Turn- I, yes, well, no, actually a hospital in Gary, Indiana, which is basically a barn. Gary, Indiana guys. [laughs] Gary, Indiana. Gary, Indiana. Hey, hey, I've never heard that song before. It's amazing.
34:04
Hey, did you guys hear about this new Fat Stevens pump? Yeah, I- From PDW? We kind of saw some version of it at one point in the not too distant past. Uh, they, they secretly showed us, uh,
34:16
one of those things at some point at Interbike, at Interbike at about 5:00 when it was beer o'clock, and we got beer koozies and I don't know. I think, didn't we see it at, uh, uh, Frost Bike as, as well? I think so.
34:31
[bottle pops] Wee. Ow. [laughs] Damn, Astor. That's like three bites of the apple of putting my damn goggles on. [laughs] Putting your glasses on. Well played, old sport.
34:43
So they've, they've gotten far enough along in the, in the, uh, design of it to actually offer it up on a Kickstarter project. Right. And
34:50
from the looks of the picture of it, it seems to have a lot more volume than any of the other smaller pumps. A bigger barrel. Bigger barrel, so for your fat bike pumping needs.
34:59
So, you know, it seems like if you're, uh, that's one of those things that [thunder rumbles] if you're gonna go and ride- [laughs] Storm's a-brewing.
35:08
[laughs] If you're gonna go and ride in a group, you only need, like, every fifth person to have that pump. We're like, "Hey, I got a flat." We should get the dimensions of it- "Ride's ruined."...
35:20
and then J- JK can make his bag custom to fit that pump. [laughs] Yeah. Yeah. You know what it reminds me of? It reminds me of a kegger pump, doesn't it? Yeah, it kind of- Yeah. Yeah... it, uh, oversized kegger pump.
35:30
It really does. It really does. They, and they call it Fat Stevens. I was a huge Cat Stevens s- fan. You mean, you mean Yusuf Islam? Yeah, exactly.
35:39
[laughs] I wonder if there's any domain- << The morning has broken >> [laughs] << Like the first morning >> [laughs] << Blackbird has spoken >> I don't remember the words to that song, but.
35:55
I, I always think of Peace Train. You know, that, that would be my song that I would've, I would say. [laughs] Peace Train? Peace Train, yeah. Yeah. Oh, I don't remember that one. I do, kind of. Oh.
36:06
So there's a Fat Bike Clothing website out there? Yeah. Is it- These guys, uh, uh, fatbikeclothing.co.uk... you know what I bet?
36:15
I bet those guys were standing next to us at Interbike when we go, "Do you guys have any fat bike specific clothing?" [laughs] Because I asked that question quite often. Right. It's like- They, they have cool shirts...
36:24
do you have a fat bike specific seat post by chance? They have, like, a shirt that says, "Fat bike" Oh, I see Yeah... it's more of a design thing, or m- a graphics thing. Yeah, yeah. It, it's not riding clothing.
36:37
It's T-shirts and whatnot, but- Right... it's cool. I- that's one of my links right there. And in UK. Helping commerce over there where the Queen Mother would like to collect some taxes off of those T-shirts.
36:50
[laughs] I think, uh, you had a fourth fat story yesterday. Uh. [laughs] Or tomorrow. [laughs] Depending on- [laughs] Oh, look. I like it.
37:03
[laughs] Well, it's, it's like- That was McMurphy in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. [laughs] Since we- Oh... record this on Wednesday, but you listen to it on Friday- This is true...
37:14
it was yesterday when you posted it. Jeff Price from Wales. Yeah. Man. On mountain. We didn't talk about you going to Iceland this week yet. I know. I know. Damn it. I, I've sent all my information and- Right on...
37:30
uh, including samples of my brain tissue, so we'll see, uh, we'll see if I'm really going, if they're, they're, you know- Oh, I thought it was- Right... for like Facebook. Yeah.
37:40
[laughs] You had to send a sample of hair or anything. [laughs] [laughs] Oh, yeah. Yeah. Gomez got kicked off of Facebook. [laughs] I got kicked off of Facebook because my real name is not Gomez, okay? True confessions.
37:52
Can't top that guy. [laughs] My mama named me Gay Ray. Yeah. [laughs] This is Gomez- That was my Indiana name... at the same time. [laughs] That's what exactly. It's my Indiana name. [laughs] Yeah.
38:09
So, oh, your other link's here. What do you got? Well, Outside Magazine has an article about beach riding that actually Ken Blakey Schell has a picture in there, and that's Andy on one of the bikes.
38:22
So if you click on that link, you can actually see the hosts of our new radio program- Radio program... Fat Camp, world premiere this Saturday. At what time? What time are you gonna get that posted up there?
38:34
[laughs] Probably 10:00 AM- Yeah... Central Standard Time. All right. You know, you could- Check out Fat Camp.
38:40
It's gonna be a little bit more technically oriented than this kerfuffle we like to call [laughs] Weekly Dose of Fat. Indeed. And then, uh, Motobakan and Boris. Yeah, those guys over there at the Fat Bike Brigade.
38:57
They, I think he, you know- Are they all three brothers? Or are they- Yeah, yeah... three brothers? Yeah. Uh, we, we haven't got a lot of experience with the Boris, actually. I've seen a few of them.
39:06
Haven't actually ever ridden one myself. I know. And those guys have. That's because, that's because, [laughs] I don't know, why, why haven't we? Well- Motobakan...
39:14
one of the things, one of the things they mention is that, uh, you can't make a $1,600 fat bike 700 bucks, so there you're making some compromises.
39:23
And they tried to doctor up some of those compromises, but, you know, it's, it's a decent bike for the money, but don't expect to get, you know, a $2,000 bike for- Right. There's-... just like any time...
39:34
there's a rough adage that is almost basically somewhat moderately true, which is you get- Wow, you couched the shit out of that. [laughs] You get what you pay for. Exactly. [laughs] You know?
39:47
Uh, but it's, it's not always exactly true. If we, if we actually make that confession, then it kinda puts us out of business, [laughs] 'cause- Yeah... we just like to show everybody all the choices. Right.
39:59
"Hey, look at this pump that hasn't been made yet. You could actually help pay for the tooling and- Yeah... and, you know, get one at a kick-ass price, and you get a cool little bag with it. Look, it's camouflage."
40:10
We've got a, we've got a- [laughs] Look at it. Look at it. Look at it. Look. We've got a, we've got a caller lurking- Dude... listening to us chatter. Really? Should we see who it is? Hey, welcome to the radio program.
40:21
Who do we have on the line? Well, name's Fred. I also go by Old Bear. Oh, Fred, you've- Out here in the Ozarks. Fred's called in before. From Rolla, Missouri. Yeah. I remember Fred. Yeah. I'm doing pretty good.
40:35
I just wanted to call and just tell you guys that I've now lost a total of 78 pounds- 78 pounds... since I started riding last July. You know, how many, how many, uh, how many sticks of butter is that?
40:48
There's four sticks of butter to every pound. [laughs] That's, it's 156 times two, 312 sticks of butter. That's like seven- [laughs]... it's like seven regulation bowling balls, or, well, maybe- Wow... uh, not really.
41:04
Seven kids bowling balls maybe. S- Yeah. Yeah, something like that. It's a- Yeah... lot of weight, dude. Yeah, that's fantastic. This was at your doctor's, um, m- recommendation that you shed some pounds, right?
41:16
Yeah, he told me, you know, uh, he told me that I, he seen me out on my fat bike and he goes, "Keep it up. Keep it up." In fact, he might even get one. He's looking into getting one maybe. Very cool. Right on.
41:27
I actually know somebody down there in Rolla, Missouri. His name is Dan Ferman, and he runs a bike shop down there. Yeah. He's a tall drink of water. Re- Rolla 86, good bike shop. Yeah. Tall d- is that your bike shop?
41:43
Not mine, but I go there. [laughs] Well, I meant like you, you shop there. That's- Your, your local bike shop it is... right, your local bike- Yeah... yeah. Yeah, Dan's a r- Yeah... Dan's a real smart ass.
41:53
Tell, tell, [laughs] tell Dan Gomez said [laughs] that he's a smart ass. I know his brother. I know his brother, too. Well, wow. Is that, are they from Iowa? Yeah.
42:04
Yeah, the Decorah, the Decorah- Yeah, Brian, Brian Ferman... Brian Ferman, yeah... yeah, who, who has the, the record for the Decorah time trials that they keep trying to beat. Both fast guys. Wow.
42:14
So isn't that a small world? Yeah, I, yeah, I just got done with surgery on my right ear. Well, what, [laughs] what? I had cancer from the sun. Oh, no. And I'm a big advocate of using sunblock. Yeah, that's for sure.
42:28
You should definitely b- wear the sunblock. Yeah, I, uh, I, I have a, a thing on, uh, a forum called Fat Biking and Health- And I talk about my experiences, and I put some pictures up of before and after. Mm-hmm.
42:43
And, uh, all the guys are going, "You have a bobbed ear now. You have a Yoda ear." [laughs] Nice. I lost about s- I lost about seven-eighths of an ear. Wow. Yeah.
42:55
So I will place to hang a pair of glasses when I get them.
42:58
But I'm a big advocate now, you better wear your sunblock when you get [laughs] out there because if you don't, you're gonna wind up with all kinds of little problems.
43:07
Thank goodness it wasn't mela- uh, what's that called? Melanoma. It was basal cell. Yeah. It just kinda encapsulates. It doesn't really spread a bunch. But I let it go too long, and they... It takes a year or so.
43:23
Yeah, I think that's what Dave had- It's like part of my Tyson-... when he had that golf ball sized hole in his head Oh, yeah. A friend of ours, Puck, had, had melanoma right on his- Not melanoma, basal cell...
43:31
on, oh yeah. Yeah. Had it on right in the middle of his forehead. Yeah, and he had a, he had a great picture of it when they cut it out. [laughs] Oh. It looked like a golf ball just came out from the inside- Yeah...
43:40
of his head. Oh, boy. So, uh- So-... Fred, y- have you done anything to your fat bike since you got it, uh, or are you kinda still riding it as it came from the factory?
43:50
Well, I'm saving up to get some new tires and pedals. That's all I'm gonna do. I got 1,200 miles on the sucker. Killer. And I just, we just changed the chain. Mm-hmm.
44:01
And that's all I've done to it for, other than, you know, lubing it and stuff. But, uh- Sure... I've been riding it the way it sits from the factory. So do you ride down there at the- It's a good setup...
44:11
at, at the Berryman and the Ozark Trail there? Yep. Been out there a, a little bit. And, uh, there's another area. There's a little park down here in town that I frequent like o- like four times a week.
44:26
It's, uh, called the Lions Club Park. They got a 4.2 mile loop in there, or series of trails in there, and I ride them. Killer, man.
44:36
And I, I'm probably the only g- guy down there on a fat bike except for a few other people that join me at times, you know? So- Well, you ought to come up with like the Jesse James Fat Bike Club or something down there.
44:49
[laughs] Yeah, we should. Oh, yeah? The Jesse James Outlaw Bi- Mountain Bike Club. Oh, there we go. [laughs] Yeah. There we go, man. Sounds, sounds good to me. Yeah. Yeah. Well, I love that area. Let me get out.
45:00
Oh, man, it's great down here except, uh, I'm a congestive heart failure patient. I can't ride when it gets above 95, and now they've added humidity into the mix. Oh, yeah, it gets hot down there. It's- That's for sure.
45:14
Yeah, it g- well, it's not hot today. It's only 46 out right now. It's nice. Yeah, it's crazy cold here too. The rain get in and stuff and- I had to turn the furnace back on. Uh, I like the...
45:23
It's a good riding temperature for me is 50 to 70. Yeah, I, I rode yesterday morning when it was- Yeah...
45:28
when it was 50 degrees out, and I kind of forgot that it wasn't summer, so I just rode in, rode in just a, just a polo shirt and shorts, [laughs] and that was actually really perfect. Very comfortable.
45:40
Pretty comfortable. [laughs] Comfortable, Mr. Man. We got some big hills and, you know, you get the, you get, you get the engine going, you stay warm. You bet. So Fred, man, thanks- Yeah, we got-...
45:51
thanks for calling the show. You are our, uh, caller of the day. So we, we gotta- Thank you... hook up with you, and, uh, you gotta, you gotta email us so we can send you some swag, bro.
46:03
Yeah, send, send me an email to- Okay... uh, send me an email to
[email protected]
. And, uh- Okay... we'll, we'll send you some swag. Yeah, we'll send you some cool stuff.
46:16
Y- yeah, let me know what sizes, you know, like- Okay... let me know s- what size shirt you wear and stuff like that. Okay. We'll see what we got in the- All right. We can email...
46:22
we've g- we've got stuff in the prize closet. Yeah. Hell yeah. So thanks for calling, man. Yeah, thanks for having me on. I really enjoy your show.
46:31
You know, we listen to it, we'll listen to the whole show tomorrow evening, you know- Uh-huh... on, um, on computer. Sure. But, uh, I really enjoy the show.
46:41
It, it's, it's, it's, for me, it's like the fat biker's Curry Home Companion. [laughs] Yeah. [laughs] Yeah. And we- we'll send you your check in the morning. [laughs] No, we ain't like that. All right, man, thanks again.
46:59
We'll talk to you. Hey, give us a call whenever you want. Okay. We're, we're always here on Wednesdays. All right, I will. You bet. Have a good one. All right.
47:06
I'll give you a report again next, probably next couple of weeks. Sounds good. That's cool, Fred. All right. Thanks. Keep it rolling. Okay. Bye-bye. All right. Yeah, we haven't heard from him for a few weeks. I know.
47:19
You know, that, that is not the, uh, the only of our listeners that have contacted us that have s- have told us their story about how fat biking has saved their lives.
47:32
And it, it's a pretty common story in, in the exercise or outdoor enthusiast, uh, market. But, uh, it's pretty cool when people contact us.
47:43
I've had a few people say, "You know, my doctor, I had a heart attack and I had to get off the couch and get active, and a fat bike actually facilitated that happening." Yep.
47:54
"And now I'm back on the bike, and I've lost all kinds of weight," and, you know. Yeah, I think it's a, you know, for people that are overweight, I think it's a great platform. It's, it's forgiving. It's comfortable.
48:06
It takes away a lot of the, um, barriers that, you know, you can't just jump on a, a carbon road bike and go ride it. Right. You, you know?
48:14
This, uh, the fat bike really, they're, they're more stable and, uh, it's an awesome bike to get back into cycling on. Absolutely. And if, uh, if health is the reason you do it, you know, it's great. Yeah.
48:26
Old mountain bikers, man, make great fat bikers. [laughs] I was just thinking how old I'm getting and how much I like riding a fat bike compared to an old, you know...
48:35
I mean, when I started racing mountain bikes back in the early '90s, late '80s- Boy, if I had to go back to one of those bikes again, I don't think I'd be riding a bike as much as I do. [laughs] True that. Absolutely.
48:48
And there's the, that's not the poo-poo. It's like that's one segment of, of fat biking. Uh, there are people that are just killing it and jumping and, uh, fat biking is, is going to influence- Oh, yeah...
49:01
the entire fat bike culture. Or, I'm sorry, mountain bike culture. Yes. You bet. I- Speaking of culture, how about some pulse bike love from our friend Bruce, the coast kid?
49:13
Yeah, he's got, he's got three different 29 or 29-plus bikes now. Badass. He has his Crampug, which was his first experiment with putting 29-plus on a Pugsley. Mm-hmm.
49:25
He has a Krampus, and now he just got an ECR, because he wanted a drop bar- Ah, yeah... he wanted a drop bar version of a 29-plus bike. And, uh- [laughs]... so he's got a couple of...
49:36
He's got i- at least part one and two of, of three parts, so. You know what ECR stands for? Extremely craggy rocks. Extra comfy ride. Or- That's- Extra Creedence reading... extracurricular radness.
49:53
[laughs] Extra crispy revival. [laughs] Nice improv, Gomez. Or Eric- [laughs] Or Eric can't ride. [laughs] Eric, that jerk.
50:09
[laughs] Hey, speaking of Eric, thanks to Surly for sponsoring the radio portion of today's broadcast. Check out those rascals at surlybikes.com. Hi, Eric. Eric's my friend on Facebook. Bye, Eric. Bye, Dave Letterman.
50:26
Bye bye. Eric's my friend on Facebook. I like him. Yeah, except you can't see him today 'cause you're banned. [laughs] That's true. Banned from Facebook. I'm not dead yet. I'm Surly. Not yet. Not quite dead. Surly.
50:42
All right, ladies and gentlemens- I'm not Surly... we're outta here. Well, it looks like, uh, Ken and Andy were a little busy tonight, but their show's gonna debut tomorrow, 10:00 AM Central Standard Time.
50:57
It's called Fat Camp, and it's a look at the technical side of fat biking. Check it out at fatbike.com. World premier. Ow. Bye. See you. See you. Oh, thank you.
