Thanks for having me on today. I really appreciate it. Yeah, excellent to have you. So, uh, Jocelyn's here to tell us about the Komorebi? Correct my pronunciation. Komorebi. Komorebi Cycling Team. Yeah. Oh, sure.

I was... I had it all wrong. [laughs] May- maybe s- So close... maybe start with how the group got together, um, out there on the Oregon Dunes on fat bikes, right? Yeah, absolutely. Um, yeah. We had...

Well, so basically, I had a friend, her name is Simona. She was visiting, um, Portland.

She lives in Sweden, and she had reached out to me and said when she arrived, she wanted to, um, make sure that she, she visited the Oregon Dunes.

She had seen some photos of, um, of some friends fat biking on the dunes, and she wanted to make it happen.

So, um, so with Simona and I kind of on board, we rounded up a few other ladies that I thought might be interested in going on that same adventure. Um, you know, fat biking really hasn't taken off in Portland proper yet.

Um, we don't have a lot of access, quote close in access to, to single track. We don't get a lot of snow in town. Um, so, so there aren't a lot of fat bikes being ridden currently.

Um, so when I was starting to plan this trip, I thought of other ad- adventure-minded ladies that I thought would, would be a great addition to this trip, and I, I managed to get, like, a dozen gals, um, who agreed to come down to the Oregon Dunes and, and try out fat biking for the first time in this, um, pretty unique environment.

Um, so it is, it's all, um, it's all very accessible. We, we camped just a mile away from the, the dune access point. Mm-hmm. Um, so we were able to camp there, um, in yurts, which was lovely- Oh, nice...

because they have, um, they're, they're nice and warm. We went in the month of November, um, so we were slightly concerned about, um, bad weather, but it turns out we got fantastic weather.

It had poured the few days prior to our arrival, so the sand was set really, really solidly, um, which made for a couple of awesome days shredding around on fat bikes. And, um, I, I wrote about it.

I have a ton of pictures. That's up on our, um, our website, which is, uh, komorebicyclingteam.com. Very good. Um, but it was, it was a ton of fun. So where exactly are the dunes located in relationship to Portland?

If a, if a person was gonna come out that way, where, where do you have to go to get to this dune area? Oh, sure.

Um, so we're speaking very specifically about the Oregon Dune National Recreation Area, and that's, that's pretty far south from Portland. Um, it was about a three-hour drive. Um, you head southbound on I-5.

Three hour, two hour... Yeah. [laughs] Um, and the, the weekend that we went, like I said, it was raining.

We actually departed Portland, um, in a, in pretty tremendous, uh, thunderstorm, and I was, like, absolutely white-knuckling it the entire way down, like, hydroplaning my entire way down I-5.

Um, and then you, you turn off and you kind of cruise through the coast range, um, and then, um, the actual... The dunes are very close, um, to a little town.

I'm trying to remember what the name of it is, but it's not coming to me. It's, like... It's close to Florence. Gotcha. Um, but it's a, it's a really cool- But is it, is it inland from the ocean itself?

On- only by, uh, a mile or so. Okay. Mm-hmm. Um, it's a, it's a huge stretch of land. The, the, the area that we spent most of the time riding in, um, is non-motorized access only.

Um, but not too far up the beach from where we are, um, there's an ATV, um, exclusive area. Mm-hmm. So it's nice that they kind of separate the two.

Um, but, but once you get on into the dune area, you actually have to go through a little bit of, like, forested single track to access it, which was really fun.

Um, and then you have a few miles, um, uh, to, of, of the co- of the, of the dunes before you hit another little forested pocket, and then if you ride through that, you'll pop up and you're actually r- right, right on the, the edge of the ocean there.

Oh, wow. Beautiful. It's, it's totally beautiful. Yeah, it's gorgeous. So do you have a story behind the name Komorebi? Komorebi, yeah. Ready.

It's a Japanese word, um, it means- She's just gonna change the pronunciation every time. [laughs] That was even closer than the first time- That was, those, those... That would be the awesome thing to do...

that I said it. Uh, pretty close. Um, yeah, it's a Japanese word, and it means sunlight drifting through the leaves of trees. Oh.

Um, and I think it's a word that I heard a couple years ago, and I kinda kept it in my back pocket. It was one...

I, I just think it, I think it's gorgeous, and it's something that we enjoy, um, a bunch of here in the Pacific Northwest with our...

well, for at least half the year, uh, with our d- giant trees and, um, and sun- uh, you know, the summer times are just nothing but sunlight. Um, and I'm a mountain biker. Um, that's what I really enjoy doing.

You know what? So I get a lot of Komorebi when I'm out mountain biking. What's that? I'm a, I'm a mountain biker, too. I think Sven's a mountain biker. We all mountain bike. Yeah. We all mountain bike.

We, we just do it on fat bikes now. [laughs] I haven't done it since... Yeah. Fat bikes are mountain bikes. And I've never done, like, true mountain biking... Uh, well, I guess that's not true.

We went out to Bend- Mm-hmm. Oh, yeah... um, a couple of months ago to do some single track shredding on fat bikes, and it was, it was a lot of fun.

And it, it, it just seems so much less complicated than my mountain bike that has, like, suspension front and back and the dials and, and switches everywhere.

Um, and sometimes I forget to turn them the way that they should be, when the fat bike is, you know, maybe you adjust your tire pressure slightly and then you're- You're shredding and you have a huge grin on your face, which is awesome.

So Jocelyn and, and I have been trading emails to set up our little visit here today, and I kidded her that the only way that she could get on the show is [laughs] is that she and the rest of the team were gonna have to record us a campfire song.

try and get Jocelyn to tell us a little bit about this pump that looks so much like a beer tapper. Yeah, that was the first thing- Yeah... I thought of when I saw it too, is just the tremendous volume. Yeah. It's big.

Um, Portland Design Works is in the process of crowdfunding for a fat bike-specific portable pump, uh, which is, which we've named, uh, Fat Stevens after our, after, um, Cat Stevens, which now pulls together full circle, right?

Peace Train- Full circle, Peace Train... Cat Stevens, Fat Stevens. Here we go. Right? Yeah. Um, yeah, it's- So your next pump will be called Yusuf... What? [laughs] [laughs] Sorry, sorry. Maybe.

Well, in a few years- Continue... in a few years it'll change its name to Yusuf Black Schumer Pump. Islam. Exactly. [laughs] Muslim. Muslim.

Um, yeah, it's, so we're, uh, we're in the kind of last week of our Kickstarter campaign. Um, and your listeners should go check it out, you guys should go and check it out.

We, we had one, um, prototype model produced, um, that I was able to go out and do some testing on. So we, we took the pump and we, we borrowed some fat bikes and, um, went to three different riding locations.

So we had the ability to test it out, um, on dirt, um, um, some sand dunes. Not on the coast, we actually went to this place called Christmas Valley, which is in central Oregon.

And in the snow, um, on Mount Bachelor near Bend, Oregon. Mm-hmm. And, um, and yeah, it's a, it's a high volume, uh, pump.

So basically we're, we're trying to cut the time c- in half that it takes to fill up a fat bike tire. Um- Hallelujah. Yeah. Yeah.

And, uh, so we were inspired when we saw you guys doing the fat bike, or the, I'm sorry, the, the pump shootout. Mm-hmm.

Uh, we kind of did our own version of that 'cause, 'cause the, the Mountain Morph had been our go-to pump as well- Mm-hmm... um, for, for inflating fat bike tires.

Um, our product designer, um, or engineer, he lives in Spokane and he actually is a, he has a fat bike as well, so he helped us develop this and, and the Mountain Morph was his go-to prior to developing this product.

And he was able to design a product that is, um, able to fill up a fat bike tire in a- approximately half the strokes. Um, so yeah, super high, high volume.

But the, the, you know, the pump still weighs, weighs under a pound. Um, and it easily can fit in either a backpack or in a frame bag.

So it's not so clunky that it's, that it's inconceivable that you can't use it when you're in remote places.

That's one of the reasons why we produced this portable pump, is fat bikes are enabling riders to go into more unique environments and really get out there and get away from, um, you know, it all.

Find, find the remote locations to ride in. Mm-hmm. Um, but when things go wrong out there, you need dependable equipment to get you back home.

And this Fat Stephens pump is gonna be able to, to help you out with that Right on. I'm looking at the, uh, Kickstarter page right now, and you guys are well on- Yeah... your way.

You've got over 13,000 towards that goal, and I know these Kickstarter things really kinda get going in the last few days. So everybody, this is gonna be a, a, a great thing for fat bikers.

If, if you haven't had the pain of, of having the wrong pump when [laughs] you're trying to fill your tire- Oh, yeah... uh, something like this, we saw sneaky prototypes of it ourselves. Yeah, we've seen- And, uh-...

a prototype of this, and the, the, the newest version of this looks even larger and more promising- Right on... than what we've seen, uh, than we, we saw it at Interbike. Oh, yeah, that's right.

We, we gave you, we gave you guys a sneak peek at Interbike, right? Yep, yep. Right. I remember that now. Yeah. At, uh, yeah, at, uh, Frostbike, I think, is where we saw the most recent one, right? Oh, right on. Yeah.

Was it Interbike? One of those. Yeah, so, you know- One of those fancy bike shows that the public can't go to, and we thumb our noses at them- [laughs]... like, "You can't come in here. We can see all the cool stuff."

Industry only, punks. [laughs] Right? That's up. You wanna- But, uh- Yeah... you wanna get into those shows, join the industry there, homies.

[laughs] Or, or maybe just look at fatbike.com 'cause we basically shoot a picture of everything that's interesting. Yeah. Pretty much. Oh, an official Fat Stephens- Pretty much... sticker. Yeah.

Well, plus you- Yeah, it comes with a- Well, plus you guys make some other cool stuff, like Dave's Mud Shovels and some of these, um- Yeah, exactly. Yeah...

some of these reward levels have other, other things from your, uh, your repertoire in them. Our lineup. So yeah. Yeah.

We just- Yeah, the Dave's Mud Shovels, that was the first fat bike-specific product that we developed.

It was actually the, the first industry, the, the first specific fat bike fenders, um, out there, and they, we can't keep them in stock. They just fly off the shelf.

Um, and we often, you know, we get feedback from our customers and, um, and our friends that ride fat bikes, and everyone has been asking for this fat bike-specific pump, which is the reason why we went about developing it.

And the, the Kickstarter, what we're trying to do, um, through this, you know, we're, we're still a small company and we're, there's six employees here.

Uh, we've been around for six years, and we decided to go the, the Kickstarter route in order to really try to take a, a gauge of the, the market viability of this kind, type of a product, um, and then just allow our customers, the end users, um, to purchase the product prior to, uh, to, you know, before pre-production, basically pre-production prices.

Sure. So they're getting a good deal.

They're investing in a great, you know, in a company, um, that is listening to them, hearing that there's something that they need, and producing something to hopefully solve that problem.

Um, so, so it's a really, you know, it's a win-win here.

And, uh, we, we have some, you know, it's a little bit of a, of a hill to climb at this point, um, but we're confident and we think we have a really great product here, so. Well, cool. Yeah, it's good. Looks good to us.

that are kind of like, is there one that's more fat bike friendly than, than another? If you were gonna say, you know, "Hop on a plane and go to Portland, this is the, this is the shop you should go to"?

God, that's a real good question, um, like I said, 'cause we're not a huge, uh, fat bike market yet. There's a shop that rents fat bikes. It's called, um, simply Ride Your Bike. Oh, cool. And they rent fat bikes.

Uh, but the Oregon coast, uh, has shops dotted all, all along it, north, north to south, um, and, and they're definitely tuned into the fat bike market, um, because our coastline is, um, really long, it's super gorgeous, and, um, and fat bikes are awesome to cruise around.

And then we also have some, uh, some shops in Bend that will rent fat bikes and, and, and carry some fat bikes in, in stock and, and fat bike-related products, um, so you can go and ride trails, um, hopefully get some snow up near Bachelor.

That's where we were when we were able to, to, to ride the snow, and it was awesome. Cool. Um, it was...

We, we were actually up there in the middle of a, of a snowstorm, one of the few of the season, and, um, it, it was challenging because the snow was so soft, but they do, um, they are, um, grooming some trails up there for fat bike riders.

So I have a feeling it's gonna grow in popularity here. It's just a matter of time. Yeah. Are- Like it is all around the country... are you guys experiencing the same, uh, kind of droughty conditions that California is?

Not to the same degree. We definitely got less rain this year than any year since I've lived in Portland, which is, um- Or, yeah, or snow up at Bachelor even... coming up on seven years now. Yep.

Yeah, very little snow this year. Very little snow. Um, and they're already talking about the, uh, fire dangers for the summertime. Um, but, you know. You know what I think you should do with this 30 grand?

Is just- [laughs]... get that money and go to Sasha from Vanilla and have him make you- Yeah... the most BA fat bike ever. [laughs] Well, I, so I gotta give out two, two shout-outs. Sure.

Uh, the first is to Curtis, Curtis Ingles- Oh, yeah... of, uh, Retro Tech- Oh, yeah...

because he, we had one of his fat bikes hanging in our Interbike booth last year, and man, that bike was a looker and, uh, I think it drew the, you know, primary, it was one of the primary draws of, of folks entering, you know, to come in, check out our stuff.

Uh, we also had a Breadwinner hanging in our booth, and that was not a fat bike, but I gotta show them some love because they, um, they built us-... uh, custom bikes for the, the Komaromi Cycling Team.

Um, those are our actual team bikes we ride on. Right. Fully rigid 29ers, um, for our adventures, so. So you've b- you've been doing the fat bike thing and the Fat Stevens fat bike pump. Have you, uh- Yeah...

done anything with plus sized bikes yet, like 29 plus, 27 and a half plus, any of those kind of larger volume, like three inch plus tires? But not a full on snow fat bike tire. Sure, yeah.

Um, yeah, I've cruised around on a few. So my, uh, my boyfriend actually has a, a Pugly Special Ops. Um, and he built up a, a separate wheel set, um, using the Rabbit Hole rim.

And, uh, so we, he used that on the Oregon Outback, uh, route that we rode last month and, uh, he really, really enjoyed it. Um, and he wouldn't let me borrow it at all.

[laughs] There was no trading of bikes during that route. Time for a new boyfriend. [laughs] Well- Yeah... relationship advice and fat bike banter. You bet. We do it all.

And embezzling, 'cause I suggested that you take the 30,000 [laughs] and make yourself a cool bike. Yeah.

I was riding on 2.2s and he was on those threes and, uh, um, he definitely had a more comfortable ride on some of the sections, so.

The bikes get it one day, then the horses. Yeah. They don't, that seemed to kind of help not trash the trails quite as much. Yeah.

Maybe we need, maybe we need to mention that, uh, maybe we need to mention that with forest, uh, people here.

Well, you know, I mean, mountain bikers are pretty good about not riding trails when they're really m- muddy and crappy. But horse people- Yeah...

you know, the horse can do anything you want pretty much, so it's not like you really think about it. But that really does tend to, uh, damage a trail. Sure does.

Well, we got a real nice little trail system here in town, believe it or not. Um, it's called the Lions Club Mountain Bike Trails. Yeah, you had said. It's built by some mountain bikers and by our local bike shop.

And it's single track and it's real nice. There's not a lot of elevation gain, which is good for me. But, uh, it's flat and it's windy. It's really nice though. It's a 4.2, uh, mile

trail that winds through the woods and through some open, you know, open ground.

And I, I go out there at least four times a week when I'm able to, and I put in, um, my gosh, I must put in four or five laps at a time just off-road and- Nice. Very nice...

I still go by the old adage that one mile off-road is four, equal to four on. [laughs] So that's a lot of mileage. We like to call those Johnny Pomp miles.

So have you, uh, have you gone to Route 66 Bikes and told, uh, old Dano that, that you've talked to Gomez on the, on the radio yet? Yeah, I told him. Dano, he doesn't, he can't remember you. [laughs] I guess, hey, hey.

That's funny. Look, the, the guys in Georgia invited us to come down there, so maybe during the, uh, the winter we'll have to make a sweep through the South. Yeah. Yep. Yeah.

Yeah, their chamber of commerce says- Yeah, we-..."Come on down. We'll pay for your lodging and your food and your beer. We just want you to hang out in our town and ride your bikes here and tell people about it." Yeah.

See, I'm, I'm a Chicago boy originally. I grew up in the northwest suburbs. No way. Up there in Chicago. Dude, I grew up- And I was riding fat tire bikes, old stripped down Schwinn's in the '60s.

On the Des Plaines River Trail? No, this was in, we lived in Buffalo Grove. Oh, damn. And they had a lot of undeveloped area, and we developed some trails back there. Oh, cool.

And the, uh, 20-inch crowd had stripped off their banana seats and put BMX seats, or you know, 10-speed seats- Mm-hmm, mm-hmm... on their bikes and kept their eight hanger bars, and they dominated it.

And they, they would run us off when we'd try to go to the store. [laughs] We wound up getting all these, we wound up getting all these old clunkers. I started out, I was the first one, with an old Phantom

that the neighbors threw out, and I stripped off the tank, the fenders, the rack, kept that springer fork, and I rode it, and it had a two-speed kickback, uh- Oh, killer... rear hub. Yeah, clunkers are coming on strong.

You remember the Kenta- Yep, coming back. Reminiscing with that two-speed kickback. That was a, that was a fun thing. Absolutely. And, and I- Yeah, it was...

my kids went to Buffalo Grove High School, Old Bear, so it's, it's just amazing how- Really?... what a small world it is. Small world after all. Yeah. So I grew up, I grew up in the northwest suburbs.

I went to, I graduated in 1970. Oh, wow. Yeah? I graduated from Maine West- Oh, really? I graduated, uh-... seven years later, so I'm seven years younger than you, but I'm, but I'm- Yeah...
