Weekly Dose of Fat, show number 68 for Friday, August 21st? Is that what it's coming up to? 2015.
0:08
[gentle music] Welcome to the Weekly Dose of Fat radio program.
0:29
Right on, everybody. That's my friend Sfun over there. I'm your Uncle Gomez. I'm your weird Uncle Gomez. And over there- Wired Uncle Gomez. [laughs] Over there is Mr. JK Livin. Warner Swar.
0:44
And you know, we also have Uncle Dick here on, uh, on the guitar. Uncle Richard brought himself an amplifier today. Brought the old amp. Mm-hmm. He can stomp all over us [laughs] with his musical might.
0:58
[laughs] He can smite us with his might.
1:01
Fat Bike Radio and the Weekly Dose of Fat are made possible through support from Surly Bikes in concert with donations from the Corporation for Fat Bike Broadcasting, and generous gifts from listeners like you.
1:13
You'll learn more about getting rad at surlybikes.com. All right. What's happening on the show this week, Mr. JK Livin? Oh, for your aural pleasures, we'll be taking call and guests all show to ask the question:
1:26
if you could do one major upgrade to your current fat bike, what would it be? We have Muppets. [laughs] We'll [laughs] we reveal next week's calling question.
1:39
We'll talk fat bike and plus bike news from the Fatty Farm Field Report, and as always, fat and plus-sized links for every- Chew- We can- Ev- every- Chew on that... body style and- Chew on that... mental style. Mm-hmm.
1:55
I'm gonna drink on this. Cheers, boys. Cheers, boys. Cheers. Top of the hill. Ay, ay, ay. So, uh, let's take a quick break here before we get into the meat of the show.
2:05
Uncle Dick can take us out with just a little bit of riffing.
2:13
[gentle music] You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio.
2:30
[alarm buzzing] [beep] Action alert.
2:45
Yellowstone National Park has again chosen to ignore non-motorized uses in its next round of winter use management.
2:54
Please comment by Friday, August 21st, and let the park know how important winter non-motorized use is to you.
3:04
Specifically, fat bike access would allow a greater number of people to enjoy their national park in a safe way, and that's part of the park's mission.
3:13
A small test section of fat bike access would allow the park to study and understand this fast-growing user group. However, at this point, the park has simply said fat bikes will not even be considered.
3:28
You have until the end of today to comment, and there will be a link in the show notes.
3:33
It's very important that every fat biker that hears this program, all three of you out there, please click on that link and let the park know that you are gonna go there, ride your fat bike, and, you know, buy something in the gift shop.
3:48
You know, buy the appropriate, uh- No, you know you can't even go into the park except on snowmobiles with guides now. Or, or- You can't drive into it or anything... or snow coaches. Yeah, you can't- Right...
3:59
drive into it right now, but there's a lot of motorized use. Yeah. And- And, and they're including all of that, but they have excluded our user group- Fat bikes...
4:09
and, and we still have time to let them know, uh, how we feel about that. Well- So there'll be a link in the show notes... considering they won't consider fat bikes, I'd consider doing that. [laughs] All right.
4:22
Well- We- Isn't it the place that has, like, the, like, thing that looks like a big- Yeah... the geyser? Old, Old Faithful. Oh, yeah.
4:29
And they, yeah, all kinds of cool, uh- The thing that, like, "Oh, hey, look at me, I look like I'm shitting- Thermals... horribly." [laughs] If- Well- We've, we've, we've seen pictures there...
4:42
I've seen certain pictures. I've seen things. [laughs] I've seen things. [laughs] Tell me. All right, we've got callers on the line here. Hey, that's what- Mr. Snarky von Filstonberg over there.
4:51
Uh- Yeah, that's what I was gonna ask. Do we have anybody on the line? Yeah, I'm on the line, I think. Yeah, you are. [laughs] Hey, Chris. How's it going, man? It's going all right. How you guys doing? I'm doing great.
5:02
Hey, please welcome to the radio program Mr. Chris Daisy. [gentle music] Yeah, Chris Daisy. We got, uh, Uncle Rich joining us on the guitar today, Chris. Nice.
5:12
We had a good, we had a good idea that maybe we, you should do, like, some sort of a dueling piano versus, uh- Banjo... versus guitar versus, uh, I don't know what. Proctor versus Gamble, piano versus guitar.
5:25
Versus my pulp culture references exploding. You could break out the jazz flute and, uh, Ben Rock Daisy. I'll wear my lounge clothes. [laughs] Lounge in around clothes. [laughs] Richard Cheese shirt on underneath it?
5:39
Yeah, but you weren't lounging around recently when you, uh, were out at the, uh, Felt dealer camp. I saw that picture- Yeah... of you when you were riding the e-bike, you know? Yeah. What's that all about? Fun.
5:50
God shall smite thee. [laughs] More fun than should be legal, and it's probably not- Really?... in some areas. I don't know. [laughs] Did you take it off any sweet jumps? Uh, kind of.
6:04
Um, I was, uh, buzzing around on some Southern California mountainsides with it and, uh, yeah, it's- that thing was really, uh, really something else.
6:12
Um, impressed me enough to where I became a Felt electric dealer, and I've got a LaBowski coming into the shop next week. We got a LaBowski coming up here to Milwaukee this weekend- Yeah, so-... at that LaBowski Fest.
6:23
Yeah. Yeah. At the time of- Yeah. At, at the time the show drops. Yeah. Uh, actually, I think we're gonna be over in, in joining- Cathedral Square or something? Uh- Having a light Russian... at The Pavs. Yeah.
6:33
The- Oh, yeah... happy hour. Trust him. Noon, noon to- So Chris- Think Yeah? Can you, uh, step down from your e-bike pulpit for a moment and talk to us about those old-fashioned timey timey- Remember back then...
6:47
fat bikes? Remember back, back before we- Yeah. Can you tell us, did, uh, did Jim Felt, uh, show you anything that, you know, us, us normal folks, us not, that aren't cyborgs, uh, would, would like? Absolutely, yeah.
7:01
There's a, um, a new Felt, uh, DD10, which is going to be, uh, I believe in that $2,899 or so price point. Um, it's gonna be Bluto equipped. Uh, really sharp looking bike.
7:16
The Felts currently, the, uh, the current two double doubles, uh, have kinda remained unchanged, but, uh, still prove to be great bikes. Um, our fat bike sales, uh, are up over 300% from last year, and- That's awesome...
7:32
in large part, uh, to the Felts. Um- People are drinking the Kool-Aid... checking out these bikes. Chris, Chris on site, on site for it.
7:37
Man, that's- now to be fair, I was also at Trek World the week before, so [laughs] I give some love to my other brands. I did some test riding on their new carbon fat bike, and that was great, too.
7:46
Uh, really love the Stache. I think the whole- Oh, I rode the Stache. That was good, yeah. Oh, man. So tell me- Great riding bike... tell me, now I had no idea we were gonna get Trek World in on this as well.
7:56
And Felt World. Trek and Felt. We Felt- Felt World. We Felt the Trek. We Felt the Trek. So, so Chris- We did... do you, is Felt gonna be at Interbike? Do we know that yet or not, they were there?
8:06
I don't believe they are. I think, um, they were holding these kinda smaller dealer summits. Um, you know, and they wanted it to be a way for us dealers to be, um, just get to know the company a lot better.
8:15
You know, they're, they're right now- They just wanna exclude more people... everybody at Interbike, you shake hands- [laughs]... for, you know, five seconds with everybody, and that's it. So, um- I see...
8:23
really got to talk to a lot of the project managers and, uh, engineers and the guys who run the company and, uh, yeah, very impressive company.
8:30
They're, they're not a very big, uh, operation, but, uh, they really put a lot of thought into their, uh, bikes and especially their bike frames.
8:38
You know, as, uh, people who like to con- you know, consume a lot of new stuff at once at Interbike and be in media, we like to get that out there, but when we were out at Sea Otter, I was impressed with, when you're at a smaller event like that, where it's just a few people, they bring in, like, five guys, not just the product manager from the company, to, to really go through the products that they're developing well and- Yeah...
9:00
why they've done what they've done. And, uh, we saw several of 'em at, uh, Sea Otter where I- Yeah... can, so I can kind of from the outside looking in see what that might've been like, but they won't let us in.
9:12
I mean, it was very cool to sit there in Laguna Beach and eat an awesome dinner with, uh, the gang from Felt, for sure [laughs] you know? There's some highlight moments.
9:20
Uh, that's, uh, almost like a mini vacation for most of us dealers 'cause we can't break away from our shops hardly ever, so, uh, it's, it's nice for sure.
9:29
But back to the bikes, I did get to, um, check out their prototype plus bike. They've got a hard tail 650B plus, uh, bike in the works. Nice. Um, it's gonna be a couple models on, on that end.
9:42
So yeah, really excited to see the, the three-inch tire thing take off. I think that's really gonna be the future of mountain biking.
9:49
Yeah, just, uh, in the short time it's been a big thing, it seems like everybody jumped on it much more quickly than with fat bikes. It's space. Oh, yeah. Yep. Yeah.
9:59
So Chris- But it's, we still consider a three-incher a fat bike, and we have for several years now, when we started reporting on them earlier on fatbike.com. Damn right. Sure. So Chris- Yeah... 27.5 fat
10:13
Trek Farley, did you ride one of them? Mm-hmm, yeah, yeah. What do you think? Real nice riding, nice feel.
10:20
I mean, it's a little bit hard to, you know, do a head-to-head match up if you've got no other bike to match it against, so [laughs] could I tell the difference between 27.5 four-inch tire and a regular 26?
10:31
Uh, it'd probably be a stretch if I said yes. Uh, maybe if I had a little bit more of a testing ground, I could, uh, give you a better answer, but I mean, I did, I didn't not like it, that's for sure.
10:41
I thought it, uh, it was a fast feeling bike. Um- A resounding- And, yeah, yeah... testimonial. Testi- [laughs] From the field. This is, this is why we go- I did not like it...
10:51
to the guys out there that really know what's going on. [laughs] We, we, for insightful, insightful comments like this. Yeah, Chris, I, I could appreciate your, you know, you- Yeah, it was totally better.
11:00
[laughs] Well, no, that's all right.
11:03
I just wondered if it felt, if you could feel the lightness of the wheel set, and we had talked about whether- Well, you know, actually what really excited me at Trek World was seeing, uh, a new racing tire that they, uh, they claim on the card is gonna come in around 950 grams.
11:19
Wow, nice. Yeah, so I mean, heck, that's another pound off of the wheels if, uh, if you're running a little bit heavier tire currently.
11:26
So is, is, is that the- Is this something you can talk about on, on our radio show- Is it the 650 size-... or what?... or is it the, uh, 26-inch size?
11:32
Yeah, no, I, I think it's a regular 26 by four or 3.8, whatever you wanna be technical with it, but, um, um, I- And, and what's the name of this tire that we're probably not supposed to talk about?
11:42
[laughs] Hey, man, if it's at Trek World, and I, you know, they let us take our cameras around the place, I don't think it's too secret. Um, it's, uh, the Rogaroo, I believe it's called.
11:53
All their tires have to be- Man, they keep coming up with better and better names... difficult to pronounce animals. He's totally making this shit up now. [laughs] No, I'm not. [laughs] Chris. Where?
12:02
Gosh, I just- He's like, "Yeah." Well, uh, I, I got, I got an advanced script on the Star Wars thing, and that's one of the alien races. I know [laughs] You guys, you guys got pranked. Yeah, you can't- Yeah...
12:13
you can't punk us. Maybe, or maybe you just did. I don't know. All right, Chris, do you wanna h- hang out with us for a little bit? We got some other callers we could probably go ahead and get to. Sure.
12:26
Well, let's, uh, let's take a quick break right here, and we'll bring in a caller right after this. Hey, so listen up. This is your brain. La la, la la la la. Sing a happy song. La la, la la la la. Smurf all day long.
12:45
And this is your brain on plusbikes.com. [upbeat music] Any questions? You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio.
13:09
[upbeat music] Hey, we're back from the break. We got, uh, Chris Daisy from Zion Cyclery lurking in the background, but, uh, we've got a caller on the line. Let's see. Who we got on the line?
13:27
That was the S&P 500. Travis. How you guys doing? All right, Travis. Right on, man. How's it going? Good. I just actually got back from Nome, Alaska tonight. Back from Nome. Nomes. Nomes.
13:40
I'm going to Nome Fest in a couple of weeks. Hang out in Nome, Nome. Yeah. Hey, thanks for, uh, sending in the story about that Crescent Creek Trail.
13:48
That turned out pretty good, I think, and, uh, I think that interests a lot of folk. Awesome. Glad, I'm glad, uh, you, you found it acceptable to throw on the site. [laughs] Please send more.
13:59
Content is very hard to come by sometimes and some days. [laughs] Plus, any story with a dog in it gets huge numbers. People love dogs. Yeah, they do. Except those that are allergic.
14:11
Hey, uh, I, you know, I got a- [laughs] Travis, I got a message from, uh, an email this week about a guy who had this, what seems to me like a really super idea.
14:22
Uh, I just don't know the feasibility of it, but up at Kobuk Valley National Park, there's, like, lots of sand dunes. Yeah? But it's a place that you can't even drive to. You have to get flown into it.
14:34
It's a national park, and it's also a caribou something or other. Mm. So I'm wondering, what, do you know anything about Kobuk? Yeah, I, I know of this place and, and have seen pictures of it.
14:42
Uh, yeah, that's a spot I would definitely love to check out. Yeah, it'd probably be a... You'd definitely have to get some coin together for that trip.
14:49
Yeah, but what just as far as actually being able to do it, do you think that, uh, Alaska's open enough to people just traipsing around on sand dunes on their fat bikes? Yeah, I mean- Like, would it be allowed?...
15:00
everybody's got a pretty open mind around here- Yeah, pretty much... um, you know, as far as, uh, sharing the trails and the areas. Um, you know, a lot of our trails are, are multi-use.
15:10
You know, you're out in the winter and somebody's jogging, somebody's rolling on a fat bike, people are skiing down the trails, and we got a lot of mixed-use trails.
15:19
And yeah, I mean, as long as, you know, it was, I guess, legal, there wasn't any park service ban on it or anything- Right. Yeah, that's my, that's my only question... uh, I don't think anybody that was... Yeah.
15:29
'Cause it's a national park, right? That, I don't know. I could look into it for you. Yeah, just curious about it because- Right... you know, like you said, the... I, I read up on this 'cause it seems so cool.
15:37
It's like, you have to fly into one of two villages, then you have to take a park approved air taxi from there, then they drop you off.
15:44
And so you're self-contained, and doesn't seem like lot, a lot of people get out there. I mean, that's a pretty the, the price of admission, not just dollar-wise, but commitment-wise is high. So
15:56
I can't imagine these- Yeah, absolutely... being on sand dunes would- That would be-... be a good thing. Oh, that would... Yeah, I could see that being a super kick-ass place to ride.
16:03
And even if you're living in Alaska, you know, that's, you know, much less for anybody in the lower 48 that have to travel all the way up here just to begin that journey.
16:11
But, uh- What are you trying to say there, Travis? [laughs] Well, I wrote in something- We, we should do it. We got sand dunes here. They're just made of garbage. No. [laughs] I know what he's saying.
16:23
It's like, it's like you hit Vancouver and then you just stop for a second going like, "Where the hell? Wait, I was gonna go to Alaska." Yeah. It's stuck. [singing] So Travis, what is, what- Yeah, we can fit a lot.
16:35
You know, we can fit several bikes and a lot of beer on an airplane, man. Oh, true that. Well, that's why they, that's why God invented tequila.
16:44
So, you know, while we got Travis and Chris on the line, why don't we reveal next week's, uh, call-in question? Well, why, why wouldn't we? Why, what else are we up to? Why not? Do you, do you even know what it is?
16:55
[laughs] Why not? I just made one up 'cause there wasn't one there. I, I, I saw what you wrote up there. Oh, right on. It's quite good. Yeah. Hand for Show. Yes.
17:05
Do you wanna go ahead and give people what that question is? Oh, that's... Oh, my time? [laughs] My time. It's all our- It's my- It's all our time, Mr. Hand. You're still JK, right? Oh. Are we trading monikers too?
17:19
That'd be cool. What is the annual fat bike or any bike ride that you're going to have a fat bike on that you look forward to the most every year going like, "I am going to blank"?
17:37
I don't know if I could narrow that down into one. That's a tough call. Yeah, it's a g- Yeah... yeah, it's like, what's your favorite song? But- Say like, what's your favorite summertime? You know, like top five.
17:45
What- What's your favorite wintertime? So call- What's your favorite-... call in with your, your five best and then pick one. Yeah.
17:52
The annual- [laughs] The annual portion of this question, I think is the, is the telling thing. But that's next week. This week's question
17:59
is, uh, well, if you're gonna make a major upgrade, what would it be to your fat bike? So, uh, we actually had, uh, Fat Bike BMX phone one in, right?
18:10
Yeah, yeah So we're the- Todd from Fat Bike BMX sent us a voicemail with his thought on the question, because we reveal that on the website before the show- Right...
18:20
and on Facebook and on Twitter, and I, I don't know, all these things. He also tweeted us the same question, so- Tweet. Ashley Madison? [laughs] Yeah. [laughs] Everybody gets Ashley Madison. [laughs] Yes.
18:32
So, the, well, yeah. So, uh, this week's question is what one upgrade would you do to your current fat bike to make it more bitchin'? Right. And here's Fat Bike, what Fat Bike BMX said to us via tape. Hey, gentlemen.
18:46
It's Todd from Fat Bike BMX. Hey, I wanted to give you guys a call for Fat Bike Radio. Been meaning to do that forever, but life's busy, you know?
18:54
Anyway, I saw your question of the day today, and on my bike I like to call The Black Mobile, which is my old Mukluk, I would really love to upgrade that bike to a Alluboo frame. Why?
19:06
Because I think the Alluboo, there, I said it right this time, the Alluboo would be a better frame for me. I've got bad wrists and, uh,
19:16
such, and, you know, sometimes, uh, my bones kind of bug me, and I think its dampening qualities would enhance my ride and make it a little bit more smooth for me. I would really like to do that and try that sometime.
19:29
So anyway, I wanted to drop you guys a line about your question of the week. Uh, I'll be checking with you guys next week. Take care, man. Hope you guys have a good one. Stay safe. Cheers. Hey, thanks for that, Todd.
19:40
So call in next week, Wednesday from 8:00 to 9:00 Central Daylight Savings Time to 818-918-2453. That's 818-918-BIKE. All right. So Tr- Diesel So Travis and Chris, uh, can you guys hang out for just a little bit?
19:56
We have a, a call that's, uh, non-plant on the line. A real call? [laughs] A real call. Well, let me put my pants back on. [laughs] All right. Live. So who's our, who's our new friend? This call is very important to us.
20:10
Please continue to hold. [laughs] A very important- Hello... robot. [laughs] Hello, this is Wade from Aspen, Colorado. Well, welcome to the radio program. You've been lurking for quite a while.
20:24
[laughs] Have you, have you been able to follow the, the foolishnessery here? Oh, I've been, I've been laughing at you guys for the amount of, uh, union required breaks that you've been taking.
20:35
[laughs] I, I, I couldn't help it. I just had to. [laughs] He, he was on before we started. [laughs] Well, that's great. So what do you think?
20:47
Do, on, on, on the question- It was hilarious listening to your, uh, pre-show show. Yeah. That was the best part. That's- [laughs] Those'll, those'll all be on the outtakes, uh, for your Christmas gift giving, uh, needs.
20:57
[laughs] We're gonna make a, a- Director's cut... yeah, we're gonna get like a thumb drive or something and send it out to people with those, uh, outtakes on it. Oh, no. [laughs] As punishment. [laughs] Oh.
21:10
All right, man, so what do you think- So yeah... about the question of the week? What do you think? W- what upgrade would you make?
21:14
Well, that's interesting because, you know, over the past couple of months there's been a, a few bicycle related, uh, uh, things going on around me. One is, is 22 Cycles and a custom bully. Oh, wow.
21:29
Yeah, that's some good stuff. Because I want a bottom bracket that's not 12 and a half inches to center from the ground. Okay. Gotcha. So it's- I don't need a lowrider. I need a, I need a Jeep. Right.
21:38
So, you know, I want, I wanna take it up to a zero drop. And so sitting down with John over at 22, and I explained that. "Everything's good with the geometry.
21:49
All I need you to do is take a Sawzall, cut that bottom bracket out of there, chop two inches off the, off the seat tube, raise the, raise the bottom bracket shell up- Mm-hmm... glue it back in.
21:59
Bend the rear end so the, those, uh, those, uh, chain stays meet the bottom bracket. Glue it together. Bend the down tube, glue it. You're done. Everything else is fine. I want the thing to be fun. Nice.
22:13
I want it to be off-road. We don't have any flat beaches here in the Rock- Rocky Mountains. [laughs] There's boulders and, and everything else. [laughs] Yeah, everything goes up there.
22:21
You know, unlimited, unlimited pedal strikes for no free, you know, no, no avoiding it once I get my dirt couch out and that's just high enough where I can ride it. Yeah. Yeah, I can see what you're saying.
22:31
I every once in a while get a bash when I get air into my ways. [laughs] Like a tall one. Well, that's the beautiful thing about going custom.
22:38
So, so, yeah, getting a deer in the, getting a deer in the headlights out of John was priceless. So it's, it's still gonna be a fat bike, so the upgrade you're gonna make to it is- Yep... move the bottom bracket up what?
22:46
Two inches are you saying about? On, yep. Wow. Get rid of the 60 millimeter drop and- I'd like to see how it rides. I mean, I could, I could see the clearance issue being something- Clear some crap...
22:54
you definitely would be happy to have. Yeah. I have a, I have a custom Turner 6-Pack from, that was built back in 2006, which is plus 25 unloaded. Loaded it zeros out, and that thing just, it handles like a dream.
23:09
If I wanna roll a manual while I'm downhilling, I can do it, and it's not like I gotta lift a sack of concrete that's hanging on my handlebar. [laughs] Sounds interesting. It did. Maybe- Yeah.
23:19
Maybe when you get it done- Yeah... send us a picture so we can show it to all the boys and girls- Absolutely... that, um, that watch our radio program on the internet thing. I never thought somebody was gonna- Well-...
23:29
call in and say, "The upgrade I want is to cut my bike into a, cut my bike out and- Make this thing into a Jeep. [laughs] We want a rock crawler. We don't want a sedan. My hat is off to you, sir.
23:41
You have, you have flabbergasted El Goku Gomez. [laughs] As in end the room. Yeah, end the room. Indeed. All right. So- Then, then the other one was Dave Turner.
23:51
Had a conversation with him about a month later after John and I sat down and talked about the bully build. Uh-huh. And we get talking and he says, "Oh, you still got all three Turners, don't you?"
24:01
I said, "Yeah, I got the '96, I got the '98, and the 2006." He says, "Tell you what, break down the, the '96, send me the frame. I'll send you a King Khan for 2,000." Wow.... dollars or for the year 2000?
24:15
Yep, $2,000 for, for the frame. [laughs] And I said, "Well, oh, shit." Yeah. [laughs] You're gonna wanna go ahead and- Now I'm gonna tail-... do that 'cause that's a fun bike to ride. We- Hell yeah...
24:24
beat on that a little bit at Sea Otter. Oh, they're awesome. I have an- Yeah... I have an old Turner myself, a RFX. You should put a 650B fatty in that thing. I know. I know, right?
24:34
Um- And get a, just get a newer Fox fork for the front or a, a Manitou or something, and, uh, bazingo. S- I've seen people put, uh, Large Marge and, uh, and Enduros on that bike. Yeah, so it's about the same diameter.
24:47
Or maybe Snowcats and Enduros. I don't know. You're gonna be within millimeters of making it work, and it'd be badass if it does. I got a pretty nice fat bike though. Hey, guess what?
24:53
We got more callers than I [laughs] What? [laughs] But I wanna make an upgrade, okay? Yeah. Like- So any other final thoughts? Did you know that Schwinn's offering is they, uh, they give you options of sizes.
25:05
You got the large, you got the size large, and the size medium, small, et cetera. Mm-hmm. Well, the large is the seat tube length of a, of a medium with the top tube length of a large. [laughs] That makes sense.
25:20
Which is a really interesting combination. Large. That's something I'd pay for. So longer top tube, are, are you saying pretty much? Yeah, yeah, the medium with a, with a, with the top tube length of a large frame.
25:31
Like, how large? Like, 25 inches or something? Uh, 24, 24, 24 and a half something, somewhere in that ballpark.
25:38
Yeah, s- so you're gonna be running, like, a 50-millimeter stem and a wide bar, and I think that's a good thing. [laughs] Yep. Hells yeah. Yeah. You gotta have power steering on a Jeep. Right, right.
25:48
[laughs] All right, man. Well, look- I mean, come on... we're gonna have to take a couple other callers, but, uh- Thanks for calling... feel, feel free to call in next week. You bet. You bet. Let us know what's up.
25:57
Have a great week, guys. We'd love to see pictures of all your projects. Yeah. Right on, man. You bet. Let's see that, let's see that 22 Cycles bike, man. Those guys rock. Yep, that's, that's what I'm leaning toward.
26:07
All right. Because there's few, few problems with that suspension and the dead alert. Yep. Okay, man, take it easy. See you. All righty, thanks. Great talking, guys. Have a great one.
26:18
[gentle music] How you doing, Uncle Rich? We got a new caller on the line. Who's our new friend, and buddy, and chum, and pal? Well, what's up, gentlemen? It's Evan. How are you guys doing? Evan Larsasan.
26:32
Evan from Larsonville. What's up, dude? From the, the, from the Larsonville. I used to- This is-... I used to eat Larsonville brats.
26:40
Those were pretty good, but then Johnsonville came and they're like [laughs] that much better. [laughs] Right. Awesome. Evan's, Evan's a rack tester and a- Oh...
26:50
and a, one of the newest- What do the ladies think of that? [laughs]... newest- [laughs] Love the racks. Love the racks. He's tried them all. Love the racks. Love to test them. Racktender. He's a surly rider.
27:04
He's a Sagittarius. And, uh, what would you say to the, uh, to the question of the week, my man? What would you do to that- Uh... beautiful purple Pugsley of yours? I got nothing as complex as, as chopping the bike up.
27:18
[laughs] I like it the way it is. [laughs] Um, I, honestly, right now if, if I had, if I had unlimited funding and there was one thing I could do, I would get myself some, some sweet racks and- Oh...
27:32
some bike packing gear. Oh, nice. 'Cause all I, all I have now are, like, little feed bags and a tiny little frame bag, and it's basically meant to hold beer- [laughs]... which is great. Hallelujah. By the way, cheers.
27:45
But I think- Top of the hill. Cheers. He mentioned beers, so we have to say cheers. Clink, clink, clink. Mm.
27:50
So would you rather have, uh, more permanent, like, pannier style racks or, and, and still, and, and supplement that with, like, the frame bag and stuff? Or how would you actually set the bike up? I don't know.
28:01
I've never, I've never, I've never run a, a rack system with panniers or any of that stuff, so I, I would probably just like to leave them on there and just let it roll.
28:10
You know, I mean- 'Cause if you're running, if you're, if you're not carrying a pack craft with you, you probably can do it with no racks. Yeah, like a big seat bag- All bags... a good frame bag, a handlebar bag. Yep.
28:22
And, uh- A bag, a handlebar bag. Those are- [laughs] A bag for the Steak-ums and the Sterno kit. [laughs] Steak-ums. Yeah. [laughs] Goddamn. Yeah, like boy scout shit and all these things.
28:35
I like Slim, I like to take some Slim Jims. I'm gonna do a Slim Jim. [laughs] Or, you know. Steak-ums make it feel like you're actually cooking. [laughs] With your butane lighter. Yep.
28:46
So you're just gonna, you're gonna, you're gonna accessorize with, uh, with just some designer bags. Have you looked at bags? Who do you fancy- I-... getting bikes from? Bags from? What the hell was that?
28:57
That- [laughs]... means you are this week's big winner. [upbeat music] Tell him what he's won, Fiona. [laughs] That's right. We're gonna send you a deluxe sticker pack. Yay. Not one but three stickers.
29:15
[laughs] Maybe a shot glass. [laughs] And oh, yeah, maybe a shot glass. That's what, that's what I'm fucking talking about. [laughs] Oh, man. That's right. Same here.
29:23
That's what I- Who's your favorite- That's what I needed... who's your favorite clown? [laughs] Bozo. Who's your favorite radio station? Oh, yeah, that's it. [laughs] Jackass. Bestbike.com. There you go.
29:34
I think that's the only thing I listen to. [laughs] First time caller, long time listener. Hey, let, let, let me ask you guys. Did you guys know, because I did originally try to call from work- Oh...
29:46
before I left- Yeah... uh, that if you dial 919 instead of 918, you get a very angry Russian lady. [laughs] She'll try it. She'll try it. She, she, yeah, we should, you know what?
29:58
I'd like to call- We should have her on the show. [laughs] Yeah, I just wanna get her to say, like, "It's the end of the show, you gotta go now." Where she's just, like, gonna rail.
30:06
[laughs] I thought you guys were messing with me when she's, like, very aggressive, like, Russian woman. I'm like, "What the hell are you talking about, snowman?" She just-[laughs] Oh, that's hilarious, dude. Yeah.
30:18
That's great video. Oh, yeah. Well, I can tell you this, that, that our lady is really nice. She's, she's not very firm. She's just like- She's very sassy... "You, you can listen to the radio show."
30:28
[laughs] It's like, "Thank you, thank you, ma'am" No, no, Superman not, no, no, Mr. Superman, not home. [laughs] Not home. No, no. So JK, if you could do one major upgrade to your Schlick Tatanka- Tatanka...
30:43
what would it be? Ah. It's like he hadn't thought about the damn question at all. [laughs] That's 'cause- No, I didn't- Oh. I was gonna say it's so- Oh. Oh, no. Oh, no.
30:54
No, it's been around s- Oh, been around, it's like... Uh, it would probably be maybe the fork. Yeah. Carbon fork? No, a little shocky fork. Boingy fork. Wo- wo- wo- wo- wo- woingy fork. Yeah. With that.
31:10
That could be fun. But I am- I mean, it's something. It, it-... deeply flabbergasted... worry me... I'm not, I'm not absolutely like, "Oh, yes, I need it" but- Oh, no, you're on the real bike. But- Yeah, on the phone.
31:20
Yeah, I was- I'm on the phone, man. My phone. [laughs] [laughs] Hey, C- I'm being a roadie today. So, so JK would put a fork on. How about you? I mean, I know that- How about you, Greg? Um, well- Sven? I wouldn't...
31:35
Okay. [laughs] I was like, "Well, you know, I could use a new chain. I could use a lot of shit on this- Well, yeah... piece of garbage I got here." [laughs] But-
31:45
Right now I c- I can say that I don't really have anything, but couple weeks ago when I switched from a 26 inch by four to 650, you said 27 plus wheels, that's what I would've done if I would've answered this question two weeks ago.
32:01
But I really haven't done anything since then, and I'm still, like, pretty happy [laughs] with the way it is. I put new grips on today. Oh. Look at how orange those things are. I put new grips on it, so.
32:10
Oh, those are orange. Um, but yeah, I'm kinda digging the, the, the 27 plus thing, at least right now. I still do miss my fat bike at times, especially when I hit- I wanna change my answer.
32:22
[laughs] What, what do you wanna change it to? Um, like those- [laughs]... those, those dice, uh- Oh, valve covers... valve covers. Very nice. That's what my upgrade would be. Very nice.
32:37
Yeah, we could get some of those from, uh, Trick Taps. I think Otis- Well, no, that's- Oh, wait. [laughs] Oh, wait. It doesn't sound as epic [laughs] as a fork. [laughs] It sounds more, like, doable. Yeah.
32:50
Like, yeah, I could get those. Yep. I want- I think, I think, like, some sort of hydro dipping wiggas paint job. You said hydro dipping. [laughs] Yeah, that's, that's what I'm talking about.
33:04
So hydro printing, you know, maybe tiger stripes. [laughs] The, the problem with, with the hydro dipping is, like, all the patterns are, "Yeah, I could have a camo bike."
33:15
No, the problem is that you keep saying the word [laughs] hydro dipping. [laughs] Hydro dripping. Slightly unsettling. [laughs] Dipping, dipping, not dripping. It seems... [laughs] It's same, same.
33:28
Hydro dipping sounds like some sort of narcotic. No, it's just printing, sort of, in water. Like mermaid printing. [laughs] Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. We should probably [laughs] keep this thing moving right along.
33:44
Let's take a, another break here and, uh, come back right after this here.
33:54

34:36
[upbeat music] All right, we're back. It's Gomez, Sven, and JK with Uncle Rich here in the studio, and, uh, Travis and I don't know, maybe Chris.
34:53
I muted him, 'cause I think he was moving his car or something. [laughs] I, I... Chris, are, are you with us, Chris? No, Chris. This, this is Evan. Are you- Oh. Are you beeping me and calling me Chris?
35:05
Oh, Evan, there you are. Okay. Evan. Oh, I'm looking at area codes, and I'm going, "Oh, that there Chris," but he, uh, he took off, so it's Evan that's hanging on the line. Right. Right on. Well, what's up?
35:14
I mean- 'Cause it doesn't-... you guys are gonna have to take a trip with me over to, to the, the local Mexican joint, 'cause I need dinner. [laughs] Every time I call you guys, I'm going to get food.
35:24
I'm calling for food. I'm getting wings. All right? And tonight it's freaking Mexican food, so. Right on. All right.
35:29
Well, enjoy your life as, you know, a playboy, 'cause pretty soon you're gonna get married, and, uh, I don't know, that might all come to a, you know, crashing halt. I don't know. Home-cooked meals. What do you think?
35:40
I don't know. Balderdash, I tell you. [laughs] Balderdash. All right. Keep it real, my brother. Yeah, yeah, balderdash. That's what I'm saying. All right, Evan.
35:48
Well, well, no wonder Evan was unresponsive earlier [laughs] when- When we were calling him Chris... we were calling him Chris. Oh, yeah. I apologize, man. Wait, uh, we need a, we need a, uh, we s- we...
35:57
Because Uncle Rich is now playing music, his one week stint as a, as, as screener- Our... Yeah... w- was, like, a disaster. I'm way glad that he did the music part. [upbeat music] We, we need a fluffer- But we- [laughs]
36:12
... a screener. We need a, we need a beverage, uh- Consultant? No, a beverage, uh, intern. Distributor? Beverage intern and- And a ball washer.
36:22
[laughs]Yeah, they had that golf thing out there whistling straight through last weekend Just ball washer. [laughs] Just make sure they're clean and pretty. I got it. You know, hey, next week, [laughs] show 69, dude.
36:38
Dude. [laughs] Wild stuff. Wild s- 69, dude. You know, I think we have actually strayed into this week's Fatty Farm Field Report. Yeah, kind of indirectly just sashayed right into it.
36:54
You know, the, uh, the Fatty Farm Field Report is brought to you by Uncle Dick's Beat Slip. Check them out at uncledicksbikeshop.com. And check out Uncle Dick's fingers on the guitar- Indeed....com.
37:11
That's a new website he's gonna open up. [laughs] All righty then. I hear the Farmer's Almanac has very good news this week. Yeah, it's gonna be cold.
37:28
[laughs] Like, who- who- who's fielding this one? [laughs] Yeah, it's gonna be cold and, and snowy. Dude, I thought you were gonna, like, elaborate on that. I have no idea what's going on.
37:41
[laughs] So is it going to be cold? Yeah, they're, they're forecasting, uh- I saw this, and I see this.
37:48
I wasn't looking at the Farmer's- And apparently according to them, they have, like, some sort of 70 or 80% accuracy, so. Yeah? Cool. Well, I'll take it. Sweet. Yeah, I like it.
38:00
I'd like to get that crusty ice going again. That's my favorite time of year to ride. I like- So- I liked how overcast it was today. Mm-hmm. Man, it cooled off hardcore. Where I was like, "This is beautiful out today."
38:10
Like, like, like 70s. A little windier than I need it to be, but whatever. True that. Yeah, you're being picky now- That's fine... rather than- Well, no, no, no... like it was pitching. I, no, I'm addressing.
38:20
I'm not picking. Addressing. Just addressing. I'm addressing. So I, I, I read something on the net- Balsamic vinaigrette or what are you? [laughs] And I- A fancy boy...
38:30
I thought, [laughs] I thought perhaps that the internet had provided me with a nugget of knowledge. Peter Redden says there's no such thing as a gravel bike. Gravel roads preexist bicycles and, uh...
38:45
Well, anyway, here's the quote, "My ride today ended up on a gravel road, and it reminded me that this type of road predates the invention of bicycles.
38:55
And for as long as bicycles have existed, they have been ridden on gravel. No one owns it. No one invented it. It's there to be ridden on, and it doesn't require a special bike to enjoy riding on it." Yeah. I like that.
39:11
I do. I like that a lot. Can't say that about fat bikes. [laughs] When I was, when I was a young'un, we used to ride them balloon tire bikes around the roads in Indiana. Yep. Were they gravel? Mm-hmm. An all-around bike.
39:25
I wouldn't ride a 20 or 23 on a gravel road. I'd ride a bigger tire. Yeah. But yeah, certainly. I agree. That- It, it's a marketing ploy... and that can, that can- Can-... be worked, as I'm pointing- Yeah... with this.
39:41
So that's, that's why we say you can't say that about fat bikes. What about plus bikes? Can you say [laughs] that about them? Yeah, a plus bike is, like, a hybrid of, of a mountain bike- Yep...
39:53
that just is- It's, yeah, refining the mountain bike more. Yeah. That's my, that's my idea. And I think it, I, whether it's a fad or not, I'm gonna keep riding mine 'cause it kicks ass. [laughs] I'm very in the want.
40:07
[laughs] Yeah, yeah. It's as easy as a wheel set change, son. It's like, "Da, da, da, da, da." No problem there. Man, and see, instead of maybe... What, what did you ask for, a fork?
40:16
Man, instead of those Sarma carbon wheels or- Well, it's an upgrade to my current fat bike. You didn't listen to the parameters of the question.
40:22
I- dude, you upgrade your fat bike with a new set of wheels, that makes it a plus bike. Yes. That's a- Hmm... totally plausible, uh- We should get him under a test set of wheels.
40:32
Somebody should send us some for JK to give a roll on. Yeah, boy. You know what I would suggest? [laughs] I would suggest the Mulefoot rim. I really like that one. Yeah. I'd suggest some just nice double butted spokes.
40:45
If you prefer Sapim, which I do, that would be fine, but other spokes are good. And some Industry Nine hubs. Yeah. That is the most kick-ass wheel set without going mental on price. I Nine hubs, I could agree with that.
40:58
Um, I've always liked Phil hubs too. You know, if it was cost is no object though, I, I'd go, I'd get another Onyx hub and build another wheel- Yeah... 'cause I love that hub. Yeah, my hub's holding up pretty well.
41:10
Okay, Onyx hubs or- Okay, so I would put, that's what I would do to my bike... s- I would put an Onyx hub on it. There you go. Phil hubs and some sort of, I'm gonna go with the Sarma Carbon B Plus, uh, rims.
41:24
Yeah, we should probably save some of those for testing. Safe and raced spokes. You should get CX rays if you're gonna do that. Yeah. There you go. We just spent all your money. Yeah, we did. We just got mental. Hooray.
41:36
All of your bonus. [laughs] It's gone. Hey. [laughs] That's a good reminder. You can always call in. [laughs] Oh, smooth as silk. Yeah. [laughs] We kind of talked about that before. Ooh.
41:53
Our show's going down. [laughs] I can't even think. I can't even talk. You know what you can think about? This week's links. We got some, we got some fat trike.com links here.
42:05
[laughs] Uh, we got, no, we got our, our, our weekly fat bike links and then plus bike links. Uh, we, uh, we had our buddy Olav, and he'd hosted some people up in Sweden.
42:16
Uh, this looked like a little island right off the coast or just something. It was really nice. Very sandy. Very cool. And not too populated apparently. How did I miss that one? Woke up late this morning?
42:27
Maybe, I don't know. Where's my surfing gone to? Well, my, I, I put up [laughs] one that's not a fat bike, but it's, it's... I, I wanted to buy this bike. 450 bucks, single speed, coaster brake, front disc. With, with...
42:44
It can't tell if it's gonna be a, like, a 27 plus or just a, a, like a 650B. But- Yeah, it's... Yeah, can't tell if we could fit plus tires in there.
42:52
Yeah, there, it comes with a 650B, and they kind of allude to the randonneuring style. So, sh- It's a Schwinn Excelsior... with bigger tires. Yeah. Oh- And a coaster brake. Excelsior! Excelsior. For Stanley. Yeah.
43:07
I think it looks pretty rad. And of course Bruce loves this poke. Yep. Hey, remember that, uh, that, uh, I think it was a Kickstarter Indiegogo project or something, but there was that Sondors electric fat bike.
43:19
Yeah, yeah. And everybody's like, "$500? That's gotta be a scam," blah, blah, blah. Well, a dude at Fortune Magazine just wrote a review on it. He got his. Yeah. He bought in.
43:27
He was a little scared there for a little bit, but they delivered it, and he's happy with it on the first few rides that it, for what the original investment was at the beginning of that campaign. So I don't know.
43:40
Check it out. All right. There's a link thing- Yeah... on the, uh, web page there. Just don't shoot the messenger. [clears throat] Internet. I saw one in Milwaukee- Yeah...
43:50
on Sunday, and I looked at it and I went, "What the hell is that thing?" I thought it was maybe somebody was renting it, but I didn't get a chance to talk to the dude. But it wa- it looked okay from what I saw.
44:02
It has, like, a triangular thing with whatever. It must be the battery. But it looks like a frame bag. Mm-hmm. And then a motor, and it goes bzzt. Wow. So, and this guy obviously got his too, so interesting.
44:14
It's an e-bike thing. Yeah. One e-bike [laughs] I, I'm with Chris on this. E-bikes are, are- Hey, you know what just came out is the biggest e-bike, e-fat bike tire ever made. [laughs] Vee Tire came out with their 2XL.
44:29
Couple of our, uh, amigos over there on the other side of Lake Michigan bought a couple of pairs, and I happen to know that, uh, one of those individuals is a gentleman named Scott Quiring that can custom make himself a bike built around those tires.
44:46
And he's thinking, "I can use this bike to groom trails." Like a tandemonium? Because then you'd have two people and it would kind of be a little wider as it goes around corners.
44:55
[laughs] It just kind of, you know, the two tires would- Yeah, you could track-... be like a wider trail... you know, Fat Girl. Yeah, that would be sweet. Rest in peace, Yvonne Craig. Oh, yeah. Fat Girl died today.
45:04
That's- On the day we taped. [laughs] Damn. Yeah. But- Sven is broken up. He's- Yeah... yeah, he's gonna need to take a break. All right. Actually, we're just gonna say goodbye, right?
45:16
Yeah, we can talk to Travis one more time. He's- Oh yeah, Travis is still here... still hanging out. What do you got? Any final thoughts there, bud? Yeah, I'd go, uh, I'd definitely go with the Blueville. Uh-oh.
45:27
As far as, uh, this week's question deal, yeah. Deal thing. Up here, especially for the summer riding, I'd love to have a Blueville on there. I do not mind the Blueville at all. I already have one.
45:38
But you know what I'd like is more choices. Yeah. Yeah. I'd like a couple more- Right. I've heard... fork choices [laughs] for fat bikes. I mean, I think we've proven that the platform's around.
45:48
Yeah, I want a foster Manitou jumping in. Yeah, would be nice. 'Cause the Manitou, uh, Plus fork is just bitching. By far my favorite plus bike fork so far. Not that there's a ton of them out there, but.
46:01
Y- yeah, I was considering buying one last year and I thought, "You know, just wait till this fall and see who else is gonna jump in and maybe even bring some prices down and..." I know RST's out there.
46:11
They've got- Yeah, it's surprising they still have a lot in that... some stuff. That's a good value fork. I think RST does a good job, for sure. The upside down fork still exists too. Yeah, yeah. The fork of many names.
46:21
Yeah. So Travis, serious question, how goes the promotion of the big, uh, of the big, uh, uh, uh, leg wrestling? I almost said Indian again. Sorry, our Native American brothers and sisters.
46:32
Yeah, just- How goes the- You're gonna set that up, man. I, I've just been waiting for the phone call to come up. Really? How's, are you training? The hammer's ready. Oh. That's, uh- Yes, yes...
46:41
it's all on Gomez to be the, uh, the, the Al, Al, what's his name? The guy with the hair. Don King of this here promotional event. Yeah. All right. All right. Now we- Gomez King... just, now, now I've got this straight.
46:52
Now, now P.T. Barnum is, uh, on the job. You'll see. Remember how good last week's show was? I can't wait for it. I- This show is [laughs] I was ready to walk in there and just throw down, but- In the studio...
47:06
it's looking a little off. I, I think that in the studio you should wait. I think you should wait and we should do this at the big fat bike expo, dude. Yeah. That's a good call. We could even have a tournament. Yeah.
47:18
Tournament. I see a tournament on the horizon. [laughs] Oh, leg wrestling. Derby! No derby? Fat bike leg wrestling at- Tournament. Yes. Double elimination. I- 50 bucks in, winner takes all. Oh. No. No. [laughs] No, no.
47:32
We gotta do some places. [laughs] All right. Two, five bucks in. Two enter, one leaves. [laughs] What? Wait, what? Wait, I got carried away. [laughs] All right. It's you against the entire fat bike tribe.
47:44
You are our champion. What do you do? [laughs] Put that, put that Bluto on your leg and get, get busy. How many legs do you have? [laughs] All right, Travis.
47:54
You keep, you keep up or you do- there's, I'll send you some, uh, some special yoga postures that'll probably, uh, be pretty good for the- Change everything, man... for the leg wrestling. Oh, everything. Excellent. Yeah.
48:08
I'm no expert at it, so, you know, I've been practicing with the wife. [laughs] She's doing pretty good, but. Very good. All right, buddy. Well, we're gonna wrap this thing up. We'll talk to you, uh, next week hopefully.
48:22
All right. You guys have a good one. Right on, man. See you, Travis. Bye. That was our fat ambassador Travis from Alaska. Damn right. Damn straight, man. He calls in every week or pretty much. You know what time it is?
48:36
It's time to say thanks to Surly for sponsoring our radio portion of today's broadcast, which is pretty much the whole thing. Yeah, pretty much. Even the fucked up parts. [laughs] Especially the fucked up parts.
48:50
The wards. They love us for our wards. Hey, you know, be sure to check out that other new website out there, plusbikes.com. That really is a thing, and they really are pretty sweet. Yeah. I ride one.
49:05
Join us next week where the question of the week will be: what is the annual fat bike or any bike ride event you most look forward to each calendar year?
49:18
Call in 818-918-2453 anytime day or night and leave Sven and Gomez a message. Bye. Adios, amigos. Scram.
49:35
