Yeah, Andy used his dark side's incredible power to design the Wednesday for Surly. What was going through your mind? Andy, tell us how voodoo and the dark side influenced the design of the new Wednesday.

Uh, the dark side, you know, I didn't really have to use too much of it for it. Um- Just a pinch... we [laughs] not yet, anyways.

Um, we, at Surly, we wanted a bike that, um, we could have a little bit cheaper MSRP, that people could buy into a little bit cheaper, and we wanted a bike that was a little bit between some of the bikes that we made.

Uh, we both, and everyone loves the Ice Cream Truck here. Everybody loves Pugsley, but they do very different things, and they're both very feature rich.

Um, we were thinking maybe with everything that we'd learned over the years, we could apply all those little nuggets in our pockets to the frame design and, uh, wrap it up into a 1,500 r-

um, bike, and that's what we did. Right on. Cool. So you wanna share some of those feature nuggets with our listeners?

So, uh, it starts with, um, we wanted to do, uh, you know, we break it up into threshold four and five-inch bikes, but basically, it's, uh, spacing and BB shell width.

So we wanted to see how big of a bike, how big of a tire we could get with 100 mil BB shell threaded- Mm-hmm... and with a 177, uh, centered rear end.

Um, those hubs are way more available now than they were when the Pug was designed. Oh, yeah. Um, yeah. And, you know, mounting racks and doing all those things, and they look a little bit different than an offset bike.

Some people like an offset, some people don't.

So, um, we had the ICT, we had the Pug, and I was like, "Man, I really like a more mountain bike handling fat bike that isn't 132 press fit and 197 space," 'cause it's a big, heavy, really stiff bike. Mm-hmm.

Um- [laughs]... so we looked into it, and so that's what we're looking at, is we're looking at back to 100 mil BB shell threaded. Um, we got a 4.6 or so tire clearance,

and depending on the rim and tire, I mean, that's, it's such a gray subjective realm of what tire fits and what doesn't fit. Oh, yeah, for sure. You know, most things labeled 4.6 are gonna fit.

Um, some bigger stuff might fit, but it's gonna be tight, and we'll, we'll just say 4.6. Um, the design- What's it coming with for, uh, what's it coming with for rim width stock? 80 mil. 80.

[laughs] So it comes with our 80 mil, uh, my other brother Darryl tubeless compatible rim, which we are gonna come out with a pin version for OEM, which is what the Wednesday comes with, and then which is centered only lacing.

Actually, that's centered or offset- Right... lacing. Sorry. Um, and then we're gonna have a welded aftermarket version that's gonna be either centered or offset.

Um, so they have a little bit different cutout patterns, too, depending on where the, the spoke nipple holes are, too. So that's the rim that's coming out, and that's a big deal, too.

Um, we'll probably get into that a little bit, but that tubeless rim takes a bunch of weight off the wheels. Even with the tubes in, they're, they're about 200 grams lighter than a Darryl. They're- Nice. Awesome. Cool...

uh, awesome. Really stiff, really strong, too. Um- So-... so then-... this, this bike can, can run just about any drivetrain as well.

Now with the 170 roll off, it can run a interlink geared, and it actually has, uh, all the cable hangers for that, as well as regular de-regu- derailleur systems, or the track dropouts allow you to single speed this.

So it's super versatile. That's right. Yep.

Yeah, so we, you know, we have MDS chips on, on some other bikes, and we try to see if we could get as much of that into a cast dropout, which is gonna reduce the price of the bike by quite a bit, and the complexity and- Make it a little bit more reliable.

Uh, uh, so we really looked into it, and we got a dropout that did everything, uh, for a thru-axle or a QR, and basically went with thru-axle because more and more people are running them.

Um, they're stronger, they're stiffer, and the new cast one-piece dropout has a front axle dump because once you pull your thru-axle out, you can just dump it out the front instead of out the back, and we're all familiar with how annoying that could be in the winter, middle of the winter.

Um, and so we were almost there, and then we came up with a really good little washer adapter design that actually lets you run a 170QR wheel on this dropout too, for this bike, and so circle was complete at that point.

You know, like we... You can run whatever the hell you can find, which is important to us. That's very- Yeah... uh, very much like the bike I ride right now, [laughs] just like sounds perfect. Yeah, it, it, it- Yeah...

that whole part of it is so true to what I, what I think the core of Surly's goodness is, is that whole you can build this bike from the stuff that is in your garage and at swap meets, and it can be a great entry level bike.

So we have some questions. And that's important to us.

You know, like we want, we want them to be, um, they look good on the sales floor, but also, you know, when you're three years in and the bike's kind of rusty and dirty, but you see it in the back of a truck at a swap meet, and you're like, "Man, I know I can build that thing up with something sweet, and I know it's good," and that's important.

And we want the things to sell good now and hold their value, you know, down the road because they're awesome, you know, so. Well, cool.

So we actually have, we had the, we put the word out that we're gonna be talking to you, and we had, uh, some questions come in from our listeners.

So we have a, a, uh, guy, Phil Tomlinson, he wrote us, and he asked if the new Wednesday can fit a 29 plus wheel set. Uh, absolutely. Yes, it can. No problem. Uh, 29 by 3 is,

you know, it's like Tic Tac to a whale, you know? Uh- [laughs]... the dropout, [laughs] it's, it could've been a lot worse than that. Uh- [laughs]...

the dropout is 20 mils of fore/aft adjustment in it, and so the, the diameter of a 29, 3 tire, um, will hit the seat tube full forward, but at 10 mils back or so, at 445 chainstay length, you're golden.

At that point you could probably run a 29 by who knows what's gonna come out in a couple years, you know? Sure. So it is- It's always changing... uh, w- at full forward, what's the chainstay length? It's 435- Right on...

which is five mils shorter than any, any bike like this that I could find, so. Yeah. I'll remember that. Awesome. [laughs] Works, works good. One of our test pilots, Olav Stendland,

over there in Sweden, he had a couple of questions. One is mostly about the tire width, which you kind of already, already covered, but he also asked what does a frame weigh, just the frame? Oh, the frame.

The frame weighs... I think, before I say anything, let me make sure this is right. I have a number in my head, and I'll get right there. Can we guess at the number, and then you can tell us if we're right or wrong?

Yeah. I'm, I'm guessing, I'm guessing- So- So we're going, let's go for- Give me the closest right... like a med- The weight is right... like a medium sized or a large. What do you want, medium or large?

I'm gonna go large. Okay. Let's do medium. Let's do medium. Oh, medium? All right. Medium s- No, 'cause you guys, you guys have a large, so you could avoid that. Yeah. Yeah, we'll do a medium.

Well, no, no, no, I'm, I'm go- I'm going by th- I'm using my idiot savant balance here. Yeah, medium sized, no fork, just the frame. Right. See, okay, okay, this is, this could be really interesting.

I'll give you a Pug weight or an Ice Cream Truck weight in the same size, and then you can have a little bit- I, I don't need a hint, dude. See, I- Yeah, I, I got a number in my head...

No, I, I mean, just- He goes to the bonus round... you know, I think you can tell a lot about how a bike is built by what it weighs, you know? I mean- Yeah. [laughs]... it, it's a good thing.

I, I've, I've ridden some pretty light steel frames, and they don't last very long. [laughs] Yeah, heavy's reliable, you know? Um- Yep...

that's about, that's about a third of a pound more than a Pug frame, and about a pound less than an Ice Cream Truck frame, so. And you've been- Right there... you know, that's, that's all been on your blog.

Anyway. All right, I got sniped. [laughs] And, uh, we actually have one more question, and this is, this is a fairly interesting question because when this was all explained to me up at, uh, in, in Arden,

I did not know that all of your other frames have a, a great deal of, uh, what's it called when the tubing is thinned out? Butted. Butting, it's called. Butted.

You, you have custom butted tubes on, on many other of your, other of your bikes, and- Uh-huh... so tell us about the tube set. The, the question is- Tubing...

what are the frame tube set differences between the Wednesday, the Pug, and the Ice Cream Truck? Oh, you've got another question. Ah, that's a great question. Um, yes, all, all of our frames are custom butted steel.

We're not very good at talking about it, but, uh, they're all there. Um, so- I know, that's what, I was surprised to hear that. I was like, "What, what?" Okay Yeah It says it on the sticker So much better. Um [laughs]

You... [laughs] I can't read. Um, so the Ice Cream Truck has a very advanced tube set.

It's actually tapered externally and internally, so it's actually triple butted, and the outside of the tube grows from the diameter of the seat tube all the way up to the diameter of the head tube. Hmm.

And there's different tube, tubes for each size. It's insane. Um, they're really, really strong. They're designed to work without a gusset if you don't need one. Mm-hmm.

Um, w- they're pretty amazing, but they are very expensive to make, and then even more expensive to miter, and then m- even more expensive to fixture when welding because th- they don't have a constant OD.

And so as stiff and awesome looking and strong as they make a frame, um, they're really expensive. [laughs] Um, the Pug has an older tube set that's still double butted, um, with gussets on it.

Um, it's, it's a smaller tube set from when, uh, engineering stand- or compliance test- testing standards were a little bit different. Uh, that's been stepped up in the past few years.

So this tube set is still round OD, uh, double butted all around, um, but a little bit bigger than the Pug, and hence this frame is a little bit heavier, quite a bit stronger than a Pug, um, in terms of that.

So the fork length on it's a little bit longer than a Pug, but shorter than an Ice Cream Truck, so, uh, still all custom and different, different buttings- Is, is it, uh-...

uh, lengths for the sizes and different tubes all over, so Is it set up as Bluto compatible, for the, uh- It is... the fork length?

So one of the most complicated things [laughs] that I have been trying to explain is, um, the fact that it, it ships with a Force 68 millimeter rigid fork, which is close to the sag, sag, riding sag length of a Bluto 80 millimeter fork.

And so there was, uh, a lot of people assumed it was designed around an 80 millimeter suspension fork, would make sense, but it was actually designed, uh, with 100 millimeter suspension fork in mind.

And the hard thing to talk about is why that rigid fork isn't the same length as a 100 mil suspension fork- Right... that it's designed to ride around, and that, that could be a, a huge, uh, vortex we could spin into.

But basically- Yes... a rigid bike, w- we like to keep it snappy and short. That's how most people like to ride, and they like their BBs a little bit lower.

Um, most people that like a sus fork like their BBs a little bit higher because it comes down as you use- Right... the suspension. Right.

They like their head tube a little bit slacker, and so there's a, there's an opportunity there to, to have the frame build into two bikes that most, that both camps really like.

And we, we worked on, and 468 just ended up to work out really good for that.

If you compare the numbers between an Ice Cream Truck with 100 millimeter Bluto on it, which that was designed for, and a Wednesday with 100 mill- millimeter Bluto on it, they're, like, a half a degree different, and the BBs are almost in the same spot.

If, if the Wednesday had that length fork on it rigid, I feel like we'd miss an opportunity to kinda reach a group that doesn't care about Bluto and just wants a really good handling rigid bike.

And so with the rigid fork on it, it pulls itself away from the Ice Cream Truck a little bit, allows it to have a lighter frame, uh, better looking fork, lighter fork, lighter frame. Cool. So that's why we did that.

You guys overthink this stuff it sounds like. [laughs] Andy maybe should- We do, yeah, we do that with everything. [laughs] Andy might actually be too smart to be on our show.

And I see her go by, and I see the two calves go by, and I'm like, "Something has to be pushing these." I, I mean, a cow moose just doesn't charge from that far away.

She was, like, 100 yards when she started running at me, and I saw her. It was really weird. So I hung out in the woods some more, and sure enough, man, the randy bull, uh, comes walking on by.
