Please welcome to the show the race director of the Fat Bike World Championships in beautiful Crested Butte, Colorado, Mr. David Ocks. And welcome to the show, David. Well, thanks for having me.

Uh, mighty, a big pleasure to be on the show. Yeah, awesome.

Say, the reason that we wanted to have Dave on the show is that so that he could share with our listeners everything about the race that we've all been hearing about, the Fat Bike Worlds.

Yeah, we talked to some people at Interbike, and they thought this was, like, a UCI World Championship sanctioned by USA Cycling, and that the Cylons were perhaps gonna show up and be involved somehow.

So is it true, Dave, that you have Jedi powers? No, I'll say this. We are absolutely and completely 100% unaffiliated.

This is gonna be a sole and a grassroots event, Carson City style, if you will, a lot like the early days and the heyday in Crested Butte when, uh, mountain biking just hit the scenes.

And we're in the same boat in many ways, if you will, with fat biking and just, um, you know, taking to this incredibly, uh, fast-growing and incredible segment of the bike industry.

We're very fat bike-friendly and happy and incredibly glad to be putting on Worlds, but again, absolutely no affiliation with the UCI or any governing body. It's gonna be a sole event. It's gonna be a grassroots event.

So, uh, can you give us a little bit of information about the format? Like, what can people expect? You bet. So we've been working here in Crested Butte on, um, getting fat bike access to the backcountry.

And as you know, we've got incredible and, and hundreds of miles, and 425 miles of Crested Butte single track alone.

There's about 750 miles of single track in the Gunnison County area, and we are looking to bring some backcountry fat bike single track to the high country, where it is just absolutely reminiscent of what Crested, or what Colorado in general has to offer.

So we've got permits in place that we're working on, and we're trying to bring about a, a couple of different venues, if you will, one of them being, again, a, a, a true backcountry single track experience, probably at 10,000 feet.

The next one we are hoping to do in town, which we're, which we're hoping to do or consider Fat Bike World, which would be a, a race that would be closer to the access of town and the amenities of town, and again, getting all the shenanigans and the good times that can happen in town in conjunction with that fat bike race.

And then we're also looking to do our final day of racing, and, and I would call this riding, not necessarily just racing.

There's gonna be some racers, but we're looking for the riders as well, um, up on Crested Butte Mountain Resort. So we're looking to tie in three different unique and iconic areas.

Um, we're working with different partners, the Nordic centers, the land trust, um, to be able to put these on and provide an amazing opportunity for all kinds of fat bike enthusiasts. Right on.

Hey, you know, speaking of partners, I just got a, uh, a press release from, uh, from Gary Shoquist at QBP. He's the advocacy director over there.

And instead of doing one global fat bike summit this year, they're gonna go ahead and have at least three that are already on the schedule, regional fat bike summits.

I think they can gather more information from the different areas and then kind of tailor stuff to that local, you know, kind of hotspot. One of them is happening at, on the Friday before your event in Crested Butte.

That's correct, and we're really excited about that.

Besides just bringing, you know, more fat bikers and more fat bike enthusiasts in the fat bike industry to our small little town during that weekend, we would love to include an educational, uh, piece to it.

So we're really glad to work with Gary. He's been incredible to work with so far, um, in, in every aspect of fat bike advocacy, fat bike access, and just getting some general knowledge from the industry, uh, from him.

But we're really glad to bring that to Crested Butte and to Fat Bike World Championships in the sense of trying to get some of the new and different, um, angles, if you will, to create more fat biking, especially in Colorado.

We definitely wanna limit, don't wanna limit it to just Colorado, but there's amazing, uh, interest and growth in the industry in Colorado, and we're glad to be hosting this to, again, help spread that education, let people know how to, how to work access with different user groups, Nordic centers, other landowners and stakeholders, what resorts are doing in Colorado.

And I don't know if you know about that, but I'm sure you do.

Durango's gonna be doing some downhill fat biking this year, and it'll be great to hopefully get a whole bunch of resorts in Colorado together in Crested Butte to discuss the future of fat biking, get the Forest Service, get the BLM, get the different land managers together, get the groomers, get the industry together, and talk about the future, how to do it, how to make it work.

Well, that sounds- Yeah... that sounds great. Right. Can I just, uh, can I just revisit the, the races?

Is the 10,000-foot elevation of the first race that you talked about, is that during Worlds, or is that a previous race? During World, we're calling... No. You know, we're, we're calling Fat Bike World a four-day event.

There's gonna be one race that we're gonna specifically consider Fat Bike World, but we do want to, um, uh, you know, ha- have events on all ends of the, of that weekend, if you will. Mm-hmm.

So there's gonna be some events before, um, Worlds itself. We'd like to do the conference. Also we wanna do an event on Thursday.

We'll do the conference on Friday, Fat Bike World itself on Saturday, and then a closing event on Sunday. Well, very good. Wow.

So in that, in that very serious, it sounds a very serious race, 10,000 feet backcountry race, are you going to invite,

uh, you know, like pro mountain bikers like Ned Overend and Dave Weens and, you know, those, those, those Colorado, uh, racers? Are, are you gonna have big names like that at that race?

You know, we hope so, and Weens is a very good friend and a neighbor, and we'd love, we'd be honored more than anything to have Dave Weens,

uh, present at any or all of these races, along with Ned Overend, Travis Brown, and even the, the Colorado Stallworths, if you will. But that race at 10,000 feet is, uh- Brad Bingham Oh, Brad Bingham, yeah...

might sound a little daunting, but it's, it's an incredible venue, and it's, it's, it's a magical, magical place. It does happen to be at 10,000 feet, but, um, that'll just be the precursor to the good stuff to come.

So we're talking about, um, it's, uh, let me make sure I get the right dates. Yeah, 27th is a Wednesday in January. Oh, okay. We're gonna have a kickoff party that Wednesday night.

Thursday, we're looking to do that race up at the Lily, it's called Lily Lake, the Lily Lake area. Mm-hmm.

And, uh, we're gonna be grooming some specific fat bike single track through the woods, again, 10,000 feet next to this beautiful lake. I mean, it's incredible.

You're surrounded by a bunch of 12, 13,000-foot peaks, an incredible venue. Friday, we're looking to do the conference, and again, working with Gary Shoquist, getting the industry involved.

Saturday, we're looking to do Fat Bike World itself in town. At the end of Fat Bike World, we do want to brand the winner. Single Speed World does a tattoo.

We're actually looking to tie someone down, you know, almost cattle style, keeping it, you know, traditional with the Crested Butte and, uh, ranching roots out here and brand our winner.

[laughs] And then Sunday, we're gonna fly the fat bike- Dave, you are, you are a kinky man. That is just, that is, that is wild. Roping and, and, uh, and Brandon. He- I'm gonna wear my roper boots... yeah.

Here's, here's an idea I have sitting here thinking, listening to you, I'm thinking, "I'm gonna go to this," and you're gonna have an event at 10,000 feet.

Right, but it is, it is a work in process at this point, right, Dave? It is a work in process. We are, we have been working for the last three or four years for, uh, more fat bike access, if you will.

So obviously we are trying to get the best possible venues. Um, so it is a work in, uh, progress, if you will.

We're also working with several different, um, you know, uh, industry companies as well as trying to find that right beer sponsor, because I'll tell you this right up front too, every event is gonna have a party attached to it.

We're planning on music, we're planning on parties after every single one. We want this to be a true, you know, I, I, I said it earlier, a, a SOLE event, a grassroots event that we get our...

You know, it, it, it's about some of the hardcore racing. It's also about just coming out and having a good time, putting on a costume, getting silly, and just a, a whole bunch of fat bike love. Oh, yeah.

I think this is gonna be one of the events of the year that people are gonna wanna be at. And oddly enough, you might get both Spen and Gomez at this one. Yeah, yeah. And, and- I hope, I hope we get both of you.

Crested Butte has so much history. The, the Pearl Pass rides, the Fat Tire Festival. Uh, and Colorado, they, they can throw down, so... And at altitude, so it's gonna be a great event.

I think it depended a lot on the type of trail you're on, and it goes back to the thing where how many fat bikes do you need, one with a suspension fork and one without at least, so that you can get something for the conditions.

And, uh, that fork's able to run a five-inch tire, which is pretty sweet, but it's also something not many people have. So this year I've got a Bluto on one of my bikes, and I will,

that's the first year I'll be riding it. Yeah, I, I... If I'm testing a bike that comes with the Bluto, I don't think I would take it off in the wintertime. I would try and break it, or I would try and get it to fail.
