0:05
[upbeat music] Please welcome to the Weekly Dose of Fat, your capable hosts, Sven and Gomez.
0:26
Welcome to the show, everybody. Felices global fat bike daisy vatos. And please, ladies and gentlemen, welcome to our humble studio, Mr. JK Livin. Happy everyone, hey.
0:40
[laughs] Fat Bike Radio and the Weekly Dose of Fat is sponsored by Surly Bikes. This week's show is sponsored by the Surly Junk Strap. The Surly Junk Strap is 100% vegan-friendly. And 10% junkyard dog.
0:54
Thus the name Junk Strap. Learn more at surlybikes.com. Whoa. [laughs] Hey, JK, what can you tell us about what we have happening on this week's show? We start the show with the event of the week.
1:08
We welcome Nate Phelps to talk about the Winter Rush Fat Bike Race Series and a bit about the 2017 Fat Bike Nats. That's exciting. Next week's secret word will be revealed. Secret.
1:21
The first caller after 8:30 that tells us this week's secret word wins a fabulous prize package. Package. We take calls from our listeners and talk about gnomes and how they affect global fat bike migration. Gnomes! Wow.
1:36
We explore the frozen sand dunes of the fatty forum field report brought to you by OneUp USA. And finally, it's time for the Fat Bike Event of the Week.
1:49
The event of the week is the rain, sleet, snow, or heat fat bike race coming up on Saturday, December 19th, 2015 in Cumming, Iowa at Moffat Lake. Hey, Spinner, did you take a look at where, where that is?
2:04
I did take a look at where that is. Sorry, everybody, we got Spinner in the studio. [laughs] Where is Moffat Lake? In, 'cause I've been all over Iowa back in the day of, of running around. Where is that place?
2:12
It is in between Des Moines and Missouri. All right. It's down there. Okay. So the proceeds from that puppy benefit the, uh, Central Iowa Trails Association. There'll be a couple of links- CITA...
2:23
in the show notes when you get to that point. Uh-huh. Top o' the hill. Oh, hey, cheers, boys. Oh, hey, speaking of Spinner again- Yeah...
2:31
he brought us in some, uh, Tyranena Brewing's Rocky Revenge today from Lake Mills, Wisconsin. Thank you, Spinner. I thought you were gonna shotgun that motherfucker. [laughs] I swear to you. I swore to [laughs] No?
2:47
A shotgunning this. Yeah. So now that- Now? Yeah, now. It's the cheers time. Wookacha, we having party. [laughs] I'm cueing you now. Oh. Spinner.
2:58
If you don't wanna do it, you know, if you w- Well- I got a drive home, so I can't shotgun that... don't, don't make me double dog dare you now or anything. Well, he's getting, he's got a knife.
3:06
Do we put it- Or a pair of pliers or something. How do you do that? I don't know. What's happening? What's that thing? [laughs] Do, do, do that thing have batteries? [laughs] I need to get back a little bit. Stand back.
3:18
Spinner, oh, Jesus. Can I get this wet? No. [laughs] Oh, your phone. [coughs] Oh. Okay. He made a hole in the bottom of the beer can, folks. It's a 16-ouncer, by the way. Have you guys not done this? Is this new? No.
3:36
I'm just explaining it. It's tall boy. Fat bikes and tall boys. They can't, it's not a video, son. [laughs] It's a, it's an audio thing. Oh, he made a, he made a very large hole. [laughs] He's getting some suction going.
3:47
And now he has cracked the top and it is ah. Just somewhat spewing all over. Gone. Sorry. It's adorly. Jizz bob? Can you clean- Care... can you clean that up now? Yeah. [laughs] Here.
4:02
Here, let me get this for you, Spinner. [laughs] Anything else, sir? Isn't that what she said? Would you like some brandy after you, if you- I thought this was on radio once... super cool is...
4:10
Oh, no, that's Miller High Life. All right. All right. Well, hey- Same thing... let's take a quick break here before we talk to special guest, Nate Phelps, the man behind the Winter Rush Fat Bike Race Series.
4:22
So I heard you need a fat bike. Come to Zion Cyclery in Zion, Illinois. We have all brands: Trek, Borealis, Salsa, Felt, Surly, and more. Yo, we have all the cold weather gears by 45NRTH and Bontrager.
4:39
Keep those fingers and toes nice and toasty. We fix bikes also, so you have any problem, brakes, gears, suspension, we have the best mechanics in town. So yeah, visit us at zioncyclery.com.
4:58
You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio. Please welcome to the show the former president of the Michigan Mountain Bike Association, proprietor of Central District Cyclery there in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and
5:17
a mouth belt in dog jitsu- [laughs] What, what's your-... Mr. Nate Phelps. [laughs] Welcome to the show, Nate. Maybe the longest introduction ever. Hey, guys.
5:27
I saw the wheels spinning as he introduced you through the s- Yeah... through the translucent skull of- [laughs]... his brain was in there working away. [laughs] It's like a little writhing grub in my skull.
5:38
[laughs] So, hey, Nate Phelps is also, he's the director of the Winter Rush Race Series, which is right around the corner. And, uh, he's here to- It's actually across the lake from here...
5:49
yeah, he's gonna tell us all about it. Yeah. You have, you have any probing questions for Nate about the Winter Rush? I just like to tell you that it's across the lake from us, not directly around the corner.
5:58
Well, [laughs] you go your way, I'll go mine, and we'll both end up over there and have, uh, a wet burrito or something [laughs] that they have over there. Is the Lake Express still running? I don't think so. Oh.
6:10
So Nate, tell us about your- Yeah, it's a long ride... Groomed in Rush race series. This is, uh, geez, my fifth year of doing fat bike races. This year we're five, five races this year,
6:22
and I have an agreement with the City of Grand Rapids to groom and maintain fat bike trail at the city golf course. And so I hold my races there. Mm-hmm. Um, this year, kind of excited.
6:36
We're getting two new grooming sleds made up. We're gonna be grooming out to 42 inches wide, and we're prepping the course, um, as, well, not as much as we speak, but as it's going in.
6:48
And so we're looking to be out somewhere around a five, five and a half mile loop this year. Um, when I started this, you know, five years ago with, with a friend of mine, you know, where there was not much snow. Um,
7:07
and so it's just kinda become something we have to kinda really prep up for these days, you know? If you don't groom, you don't really get, get much of a showing for races. Um, so it's all in the good groom, I think.
7:20
Cool. So, so every- Yeah... race is at the same venue, is that correct? It is this year, yeah. Um, we, including, um, as I just found out this week,
7:32
we will also be, my final race, February 13th, will be the USAC State Championships of fat bike. Um- That's the United States Auto Club, for everybody listening. [laughs] Yes, sir. Yes, sir. No, it's USA Cycling.
7:46
Oh, we d- uh, do we like those guys? Well, we, we have one of their... We have one? He's a collaborator, man. Oh, okay. He- We're talking to, we're talking to the empire now. I'm a collaborator. All right, we're a...
7:56
[laughs] I'm just a corroborator. I'm not a collaborator. [laughs] We're Switzerland. [laughs] I'm not. Am I grinding my teeth? [laughs] Uh-oh, Spinner Ryerson- [laughs]... is grinding his teeth. It's all right.
8:07
So let's, so just ignore- I like it... ig- ignore the peanut gallery about, about that. So that's pretty cool, is you're gonna have a state championship.
8:12
That's actually one of the things that will add credibility to USA Cycling's involvement in fat biking, is more regional qualifying races, so when nationals come around, that you have actually qualified. Absolutely.
8:29
That was, it was one of our original complaints, was that they just kind of jumped on the bandwagon at the top level instead of working it from the bottom up, which I think is how all- I-...
8:38
race series ought to be going. I agree. Um, and it's, it's been a bit of a learning curve with me with, and, um, I'm new to, to USA Cycling, and it's been kinda, well, it's interesting, you know? [laughs] It's not like,
8:55
you know, a lot of my races kinda were, you know, pretty beer driven. Mm-hmm. And, uh, you know, now we're sh- trying to see how this will change things, if we
9:06
see a huge increase in, in competitiveness or how that actually goes. But- USA Cycling cyclocross races allow drinking. For the spectators. There's beer handles in it. Oh, well, that, that's once they're rolling. Yeah.
9:23
I don't think you can pre-drink. Yeah. All right. Well- So we're, and that's one of the beauties of working at the, uh, golf course, is that the clubhouse is open and they have a liquor license.
9:33
Do, do they have a beverage cart? Um- A be- [laughs] They have a liquor license... a beverage sled that just like- Yeah... goes around the course? They have a beverage sled. [laughs] Well, we're working on that.
9:42
All right. See, I'm a, I'm an idea guy. I like that. You could, you could actually run the course right through the bar and over, over the bar and out the back door.
9:51
Here's another idea to spice up a golf course, race course, is cage dancers. [laughs] You can't go wrong with that, can you? No. Men and women- Yes... because we can't be sexist. Very true.
10:05
I don't, you know, and I could think of nothing better than seeing Gomer in a Speedo. Dude, I am, I am getting down to where- He's getting svelt... you know- He is. After- [laughs] I can still think of 100 things better.
10:15
[laughs] But not 101. Oh, yeah. Why do you have to do this to the people at home? 'Cause now they're all, they're gonna be- Are you gonna full body wax? [laughs] Why would I do that, when I have such a rich- No...
10:27
shiny coat? That's another four pounds, though. [laughs] It's true. Is, is that aerodynamic? It's, it's an insulating layer. It's, it's, you know, it's a pillow, it's a blanket. [laughs] It's a sweater.
10:43
[laughs] It's a vest. It's my best friend. [laughs] All right. So- We digress...
10:51
all, all kidding aside- We never even talked about, that we, we talked a little bit about Nate's race series, but Nate is also responsible for bringing the USA Cycling 2017, and maybe even the 2018, national championships to Grand Rapids.
11:07
And, uh, that's why Nate has started working with USA Cycling. I see the end game here. So- Uh-huh. [laughs] I wanted to- You're a smart man. Have I told you how handsome you are yet? [laughs] See? Now he knows.
11:22
See, now he's put on the Storm Trooper outfit, and now you're talking the Imperial language, the Imperial code. Uh, so- Uh-huh... so Nate,
11:30
what I wanna know is what do you think that that's going to do for fat bike racing in Michigan? I personally think it's going to bring a certain level of prestige. Well, do, what say you, sir? I, I agree.
11:44
I think, not only to Grand Rapids, but I think Midwest. You know, I'm not sure that Ogden, Utah, would've been my first choice to put my, my first fat bike nationals there, but so be it, you know? Um,
12:02
but I feel that there's a lot of good race promoters in Grand, in, in Michigan. Mm-hmm. Um, Scott Chambers and the Great Lakes Series- Oh, yeah... Todd Poquette up in Marquette, you know?
12:13
And, uh- Rick Plight, maybe, right? It, it required a little bit, you know? And I think that pulling this all together, I mean, I do think it kind of speaks well of Michigan in general. Right.
12:26
And it allows us to kind of showcase what we do best, which is fat bike racing. Yeah, and reliable snow because of the lake effect, and good trail systems. Yeah.
12:37
Um, and, and- So, uh, I, I didn't look at Farmer's Almanac this year. What's the actual, uh, prediction for the El Nino enhanced snow over there in, in your area? Um, you know,
12:49
I gotta be honest, I didn't look either, but I, I'm working with dates because I know that I have pretty reliable snow. Yeah, for sure. Um, you know, and so, um, we'll push to be like the second weekend in February
13:04
and, um, you know, after kind of like doing this for five years, I can look back and go, "Yeah, we, we've had reliable snow right around then," and usually like a big, big, wet, heavy dump, to be honest.
13:16
[laughs] Um, [laughs] so- [laughs] I think you might actually be the one that gets JK. Oh. I think maybe, I think maybe, yes, he's gonna... Oh, oh, oh. He almost went out the nostril.
13:31
I have, have been trying to make him shoot beer out of his nose forever, and you almost did it. You came closer than I ever have. Congratulations, sir. [laughs] Oh, thank you. Take a break?
13:42
[laughs] Push him on the break. No, it's been... This is live radio. We don't get no breaks. No, we don't get no breaks. [laughs] Oh, well, you could, you could take a break if you need a break. Um,
13:54
well, I think we've pretty much exhausted- Es- especially if it's to get a beer... exhausted all of the national stock. I think we've given you just enough of a hard time about it. Oh, you have.
14:04
I, I think it's a good thing, dude. And my hat's off to you for, for getting that race to come to your backyard, man. That means that- Oh, thanks...
14:14
Ned Overend is gonna be coming to Grand Rapids, and so will Travis Brown and, you know, a lot of other big names. Yeah. It's gonna be a cool thing. I can't wait. I think so. And I...
14:28
You know, there's some really good local racers, and I just think that it's gonna increase the- Yeah, Jesse Lalonde-... a little bit of the pattern... and Jordan Wakeley, and you know? Yeah. Yeah.
14:38
Gomez is the name dropper. Well, I am this Howard Cosell of fat bike racing, you know? Who, who's your Muhammad Ali? Uh, I don't know. [laughs] Man. Well, you know how much those guys made each other's careers.
14:53
Oh, it's true. It's true. I, maybe I haven't found it yet. Maybe it's Nate Phelps. Maybe it's JK Living. No. Oh, no, it has to be a racer. [laughs] I think, you know, locally you gotta go with Nate Versluis. Oh, yeah?
15:03
Just because his name sounds like Dr. Seuss. Nate Versluis. [laughs] Dr. Seuss. I could start, I could start rapping right now, but I won't. So Nate, what's happening at the shop this year?
15:17
Are you seeing, uh, in more and more people getting into fat biking? Is it sort of a steady stream from, 'cause I know you've been doing it for a while, or, you know, what's happening? He's got Skukums. Oh. Yeah.
15:29
One of those guys. Yeah. It's been a steady stream. I mean, you know, and, and honestly, this is the first year we had...
15:36
You know, I do, I'm a Kona dealer and a Fatback dealer, and I've kind of gone through my init- wave of initial order and we're, you know, getting ready to bring more in, and, um, it's just been slow and steady.
15:51
Um, but the other thing we're really seeing a lot of is, you know, two looker upgrades, new tires,
15:59
a lot of people kind of working in the used market trying to upgrade stuff and, um- I think wheel sets are gonna be a big thing, too. Yeah, that's one of the- Yeah...
16:08
one of, one of this year's Christmas, uh, or holiday giving ideas is a new wheel set for your fat bike, honey. Absolutely. Carbon wheels. Oh, yeah. You know, you can't get enough footprint, can you? I mean, geez.
16:22
But we're, that's what we're seeing. There's a big trend into, I think, components and accessories. Bikepacking really drives a lot, you know, bags. Oh, yeah. Um. You gotta be able to- You know?
16:32
You gotta be able to have the bag to put the dead body in to take backpacking with you, for sure. Exactly. Yeah. You know? Pack your stuff. Um- Your cappuccino maker- Yeah... et cetera.
16:45
[laughs] Well, I don't leave home without an AeroPress, but yeah. That's a big thing now, coffee on the trail. Yeah, that, well, the Europeans started that, so I'm not sure.
16:55
Should we follow or should we- And now that I'm like a reformed straight edge, half straight edge, half-caff cappuccino kind of dude now, maybe. [laughs] Yeah. [laughs] I almost made, I almost made Sven and JK spit up.
17:14
Yeah, so now [laughs] now- So that's the new alcohol-free Gomez. Maybe, maybe I should be, like, making coffee on the trail. Maybe I should do some dishes out there maybe, you know?
17:23
You can't be straight edge with the ganja, though. [laughs] Well, that's why I said a half straight edge. Like, reformed straight edge or half-caff. That's what I meant, but I didn't wanna mention the ganja.
17:33
[laughs] So thanks for pointing that out. Well, yeah, but I mean, you, because you were recently diagnosed with the glaucoma, you prob- you need the ganja for the glaucoma. Well, you know, I, yeah.
17:44
[laughs] Yeah, 1,000% yes. Mm-hmm. I agree. So Doctor, Dr. Nate, aren't you glad you called now, now that you're involved with international conspiracy? Oh, for sure. For God sakes. Well, they got the medical over there.
18:00
Oh, man. Yeah, they do. They do. They do. I'd love to visit your state. Yeah. Next time I come over there, we're gonna have to go for a little ride, my man. How's that sound? Okay.
18:10
And maybe you can borrow me that Corvus since you're gonna be riding your Skukum. Ah. And I'll let you ride- Ah...
18:17
and we'll just let you, like, bask in the new unholy purpleness of, of Lotus that is coming down the pike. Oh, man. Yeah, we got a, we got an Otis update today.
18:27
[singing] Otis has been cleaned, and reamed, and phased, and chased, and is ready for the purple- Yeah... down at the old powder coater, Raphael Industries- Raphael... here in Milwaukee.
18:40
New Richie WCS carbon bull moose bars. Ah. Yeah. That's crazy. Crazy stuff going on right in our fat bike world. So, uh, let's go do that. For sure.
18:56
We'll, we'll have to go to your golf course and ride nine holes, and then kick- Mm-hmm... kick back on the 19th hole and, uh, have a half-caff cappuccino, uh, with- Can we do like a, like a-...
19:10
full throttle or something... can we do like a s- a stick golf front and a disc golf rear nine maybe? There you go. Kind of mix it up a little bit. I'll bring my French press. Mix it up. I have that.
19:18
Disc in the front and basket in the back, I like it. [laughs] All right, Nate. Well, thanks for joining us on the show.
19:25
This will all be edited down to about 45 seconds where you actually talked about your fat bike race series. That's the Winter Rush Fat Bike Race Series in Grand Rapids, and we will have a link in the show notes.
19:38
Nate, you're a gentleman and a scholar, and, uh, let's go ride bikes. Sounds like a plan. Thanks. Thanks, Nate. Yep. Talk to you guys later.
19:50
We'll be right back with next week's call-in question after a word from our [slurping] [upbeat music]

20:42
JK, what is next week's call-in question, man? Who is your favorite Bike Black Ribbon test pilot? What- Spinner... is- [laughs] Of course it's Spinner. Vote for Spinner.
20:56
[laughs] Call in next week Wednesday from 8:00 to 9:00 Central Standard Time to 818-918-2453 and let's discuss live.
21:09
Yeah, we're gonna be taking some callers here at 8:30 for the contest and, uh- Yeah, you got about three minutes until the callers call. Three minutes.
21:15
And, uh, we should ask some of them what they're doing to celebrate the Global Fat Bike Day. Ga-who. While, while we're waiting for them, what are you doing there, Gomez?
21:24
So- I'm gonna, uh, go to my local trails and ride whatever is environmentally insensitive to the trail tread. Whatever is best- Whatever Norm hasn't closed off?
21:38
[laughs] We're, we're just gonna ru- try and ride responsibly. There's double track there that we can ride. There's a little bit of beach. But, uh, we'll find something to ride.
21:46
It's not gonna rain from now till Saturday, so- Maybe... I have a feeling- Mm-hmm... that it's, everything's gonna be fine, 'cause you know what? That's pretty much my attitude about everything.
21:57
[laughs] I think we're gonna find a couple bridges, eh, JK? Oh, yes. We'll, we'll be, uh- As always... we'll be hiding under a few bridges as gnome clauses. Oh, very nice. Santa Rampage. Yep.
22:07
And, uh, Spinner, what, what are you doing for Global Fat Bike Day? Global Fat Bike Day. I haven't decided. There's a lot of options on the table.
22:13
There's a lot of dudes I wanna party with and a lot of places I'd like to ride. Do you have an agent that people should contact should they wanna lure you to their Global Fat Bike Day celebration?
22:22
Yeah, what do you offer? What kind of beer are you having? [laughs] Are you having barbecued wieners in a Crockpot? I might show up. Under a bridge. Cocktail weenies. Under a bridge.
22:30
Milwaukee cocktail weenies under a bridge. You, you- I might do that too... I want my hobo beans and weenies under a bridge.
22:36
[laughs] You, too, could have the Spinner Ryerson at your Global Fat Bike Day event should you hit the cocktail weenie lottery. Yeah. Can I wear a Santa Viking costume? [laughs] Is that gonna happen?
22:49
Santa Vicodin costume? [laughs] That'd be easy to do, but, uh... [laughs] Have we staggered into the Fatty Farm Field Report at this moment? Kind of sideways like. Mm-hmm.
23:02
This week's Fatty Farm Field Report is presented by 1UP USA Racks. The best fat bike rack on the planet is made right here in Wisconsin. Mm-hmm. So do we have a caller yet? Or shall we- It's not 8:30 yet...
23:16
or shall we probe- [laughs]... further into- Not me. Please go for it, man... the Spinner Ryerson. Yeah. Yeah. I'm gonna drop all the callers because we're coming up on the 8:30 mark. All right.
23:31
We'll get to Spinner right after we find a winner. Oh, it's like poetry now. Didn't you know it's re- [laughs] Hey, top of the hill, boys. And- Whoo... also welcome to the radio program. It's 8:30 here in the studio.
23:47
I don't know if it's 8:30 where everybody else is, but, uh, [clears throat]- Not right here... we've got our first caller on the line. Who are we talking to? Hey, guys. This is Chris Stewart. Chris Stewart.
23:58
Chris Stewart, winner of the... Well, you won something from us already. He hasn't won... Oh, has he won something from us? No. Yeah. He has not. Yeah, you're, uh, he won a bike from us, yo. Tell me, uh, tell me.
24:09
I don't got memory. Mm-hmm, that's right. Okay. We were just talking about Auditon International. I met you, and I met you in Utah. Yeah. And then- I met your whole family. Didn't we- Yeah...
24:18
didn't we go to the hot springs and what? No, that was somebody else. Um- [laughs] No, that was definitely somebody else. Just kidding. But the new- So-... the new Spelt Gomez will look good at your hot springs. Stop it
24:33
Stop making people imagine me naked or in- Oh-... European swimwear... you brought up the naked part. Uh, I know how I go to hot springs. Um, so Chris, tell us how gnomes have affected your fat biking life.
24:49
No, tell us the, the secret word. Pizza shuttle. Pizza shuttle. Do, do, do, do. [laughs] You are the winner of our fabulous- Awesome...
25:01
prize package, including a limited edition Surly playing card, a hooded hoodie with- There's a-... Chumba USA on it. [laughs] You don't even know what the hell's in that package, do you?
25:15
[laughs] A hooded hoodie, like a sleeveless vest? Is that what it is? Assless chaps? [laughs] Assless chaps, damn, that's just cold. [laughs] Well, the- You cheeky bastard...
25:28
all chaps are assless, so- All vests are sleeveless- We're gonna send it all to you... and all hoodies have hoods And we are going to edit- Perfect...
25:34
we are gonna edit this part out where you tell us where to send this to. So you can give us your address right now and we will edit it out. Send all your love letters and fan mail.
25:45
[laughs] But nobody's gonna hear that, except for Spinner. Have fun. Spinner, [laughs] I know where you live. [laughs] Spinner Ryerson. All right, Chris.
25:56
Hey, what's going on in your neck of the woods for Global Fat Bike Day? Um, there's a big festival i- um, you know, up in Ogden with, uh, I forget the guy with the ultimate beard that you guys always talk about.
26:07
Oh, Mark Peterson. But un- yeah. But unfortunately, I'm taking a continuing ed class on Saturday and have to, uh, attend an eight-hour class, but hopefully getting out in the afternoon on the fat bikes. Killer, man.
26:24
Right on. Well, you are a two-time winner. You are one lucky man. I g- I do have to tell him that you can no longer win in 2015.
26:33
[laughs] You're gonna have to wait till 2016 for your next winning- No way, I think he can still win, dude... wait, not, y- what, what? Three times would be ridiculous.
26:42
[laughs] [laughs] He'd be like, "I don't know, man" So what about for next week? Next week we're giving away a long, lingering, sweaty man hug from yours truly. And also a Surly Moonlander- Or a- Oh...
26:57
we're giving away a Surly Moonlander-... Global Fat Bike Day... that's true, and a One Up USA rack, and a pair of tires, your choice of the new fabulous Hodag, Rogue Guru, Barbegazi, and another name that is Gnarwal.
27:13
Gnarwal? Ha, ha, how's that for branding? Do they- That's brand-... like, swim on the ice or something? Here comes the Gnarwal. That's a water, that's a water tire. It's, it's, comes studded or- Ribbed for her pleasure.
27:25
Yeah, that's it. Studded for your pleasure or, uh, like, unstudded, but can be studded. What does that mean? What is that, how do you say that? Studless. [laughs] Studless studs. Dear God.
27:38
Chris- Chris, are you still there?... go again. I'm here. Well, this is where we say bye bye. Thank you for calling. You are a big winner. Thank you very much. All right, have a good night, guys. All right.
27:50
All right, see you, Chris. See ya. Bye. Chris Stewart- Now-... he's a lucky dude. He, he won a, he won a bike from us. Oh, he won the Megalith, didn't he? Yeah, well- Yeah...
28:00
yeah, there, there's lucky and then there's, there's winning that. [laughs] He's talked about Mark Peterson quite a bit. Can I talk normal? No, shush. No, we did, do you guys want, do you want to say something? Oh, yeah.
28:11
Well, he's, he's doing a lot of events over there. Yeah? That Mark Peterson guy. Yeah. Yeah. He's the bearded guy that we were talking about. Yeah.
28:20
Uh, he recently did, did a thing on Facebook and he said he wasn't getting enough, um, sponsors out there. For the old FBOG. Yeah, yeah. The, uh, Fat Bike Ogden Buffet. Yeah, yes. Or bouffant.
28:33
And it's like, um, you know, I think a lot of people commented that, you know, keep the bike thing fun. You don't need to make a lot of money at it right away, 'cause it's kind of new, isn't it?
28:42
Well, yeah, and I, Mark is never about making money. He's about having fun. He just can't go broke doing it. That's, yeah.
28:48
Maybe it costs a lot to get his venue and things like that, but- Start small, build it, and they will come kind of thing. Exactly.
28:54
You look what's, look at the- That's exactly what I said actually [laughs] on Facebook- Look at the races that-... are you reading them?... that we started five years ago that are all international, like,
29:03
hundreds of thousands of people out- no, wait, that's my, that's when I'm sleeping and dreaming. [laughs] I didn't know where you were going with that, but- Yeah, I was just being Mr. Exaggerationalism. Yeah.
29:14
But he's very excited about fat bikes, and I hope that his event works out. Um- Yeah, FBOG, man, if you're in that general- He just had appendicitis, I believe. Really? I keep it up on the Facebooks. Oh.
29:25
The Facebooks have a lot of news that I don't see. [laughs] Yeah. Are you un-Facebookable? I'm not, I just don't have- On the Face Place... a lot of time to spend on it- Ah...
29:34
when I'm playing my- You know what you need to do? You need to get a job in IT... Fatbike.com. Yeah, right. [laughs] Sit in front of the computer all day. I was delightfully
29:43
on, in front of my computer for almost the last two days because I went up to Wausau to ride that Cannondale Fat Cad 1. Mm-hmm. And, uh, man, I like that bike. Where'd you ride it, Nine Mile?
29:55
Do they have a- Nine Mile is closed because of hunting and- They got, they got sunny- I went to, I went to Big O Plain.
30:03
Uh, it's a county park down in, by Mosinee, and they've been building single track there, and there's some hairy stuff.
30:08
You know, we've gotten three quarters of an inch of snow overnight, so, uh, got to ride beach, road, single track, double track. It was a, it was a nice test for that bike, and I, I'm liking the lefty, man. Yeah?
30:22
That lefty, uh, Olaf fork. Very- This is an official lefty, 'cause- Yep... you guys- Official... rode another, uh, lefty a few years ago. Right. Yeah... this is a complete bike from Cannondale. So this is- Yep...
30:33
Cannondale official. Okay. So right around 30 pounds. Front end felt very light on it.
30:39
So, you know, when you ride a Bluto bike and you go to wheelie, you know, you gotta kinda yank on that thing, 'cause there's an extra pound up there. Did not feel that at all with the, uh, with the lefty. Interesting.
30:49
I gotta ride one, 'cause the numbers on the bike make me go I don't know. You don't- I kind of know how that should ride... huh? Yeah? Yeah. Oh.
30:56
It had a, it had a more traditional fat bike ride that I prefer, so I, I mean, I got to ride it
31:05
a little bit at night, and then I did a nice two-hour ride today, so probably got seven, eight miles in with all the picture taking and e- et cetera. Right. All the selfies I was taking.
31:16
[laughs] And the, the frantic video. [laughs] With the, with the one moment of terror. Whoo. Whoo. Whoo. [laughs] So yeah, it's- Oh... you'll see a, you'll see a little report on that.
31:26
You said south of Wausau, so you did not get up to the Underdown Trails. No. Okay. Didn't get up there. The, the snow actually was better just south of, of Wausau. Okay.
31:34
Wausau only got maybe a quarter of an inch of snow, and it was a lot more wet. So what's the, uh, what's the place right in town that sounds like it should be in, uh, Trailer Park Boys? Oh. Oh, oh, Sunnyvale.
31:45
Right, which is not even rideable yet because there's not enough frozen snow ground. Right. Well- 'Cause that's kind of river bottom area...
31:51
and I was talking to my buddy Travis up there, and, uh, he is, we have a mutual acquaintance, Bob Donahue or Bob Dundee, big MTBR guy, that does the grooming up there for that, and he hasn't even, they haven't even started.
32:07
Yeah. They don't have, they don't have snow. It's pretty cool. Uh, Dave and I stopped by there on our way back from the summit I, I think it was two years ago now.
32:16
But it was fun, 'cause it's, it's an area you can't ride when it't's not frozen- Mm-hmm... because it is, like, swampland. Right. Well, it's a good use. A great use. Right. I've never ridden there. I would like to.
32:30
So you are currently testing, Mr. Spinner, the Surly Ops Ice Cream Truck Ops. I am. << Got me one that's passing by >> And, uh- Oh, my, my. Oh. Oh. Beer cap's being- You got a beer cap to the shoulder... blown off.
32:46
[laughs] I got a cap in my ass. I couched that. [laughs] Didn't wanna hit you in the eyeball. Came to Milwaukee, I got a cap in my ass. Yes. And, uh- The Surly Ops... the Surly Ops. Yeah.
32:56
And you haven't even ridden it yet. Um, I have not. I have not had time. So we're going to, uh, we're gonna pull you into the studio and take some photographs of you with the bike. Yeah. That should be thrilling.
33:07
I brought a costume. And have you ridden an Ice Cream Truck? I have ridden an Ice Cream Truck. Um- Got me one, I'm passing by. Oh, my, my. Oh, my, my. Have you always sung that song? [laughs] Yeah.
33:17
Well, no, g- um, actually, when we were testing the, some fancy fucking bike, when we did the race out at, uh... I am horrible with names. Um, well, you sponsored the fat bike team. Her name was Susan, I was told.
33:29
Oh, at, at Wausau 24. Nope. No? Not Wausau 24. Down by you, Emma Carlin. Um, it was Andy, Brian Furman, myself- Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. All right. It was the WEMS race at, at Kettle. Yeah, and Colin.
33:39
And then, uh- So we had a Borealis Yampa with a- The Borealis, yes... with a Bluto on it, and that's, there was an Ice Cream Truck there... there was the original Ice Cream Truck, yeah. Right, right, right.
33:48
That's right, and that's the first time I rode it.
33:49
And, um, you know, I've been talking about it for a while, but I have a Moonlander and a Pugsley, and I'm interested to see what the difference is with the Ice Cream Truck. And like I did say, that, um,
34:00
it looks a little weird having that huge fork on the front with the 3.8 tire, but I do like being able to put a five-inch tire in there if I want, because I love the utility, and that's why I ride the regular Pugsley that, with the offset, 'cause I like to switch the wheels.
34:14
I like having options with one bike. I don't wanna have a w- single bike that does one little thing, another bike does one little thing. And I like to be able to switch them around.
34:22
And oddly enough, now you have three bikes in your possession. I have 12 bikes in my possession. [laughs] By fat bikes we're talking about. Yeah, fat bikes, yeah. [laughs] I mean- All Surlys, too.
34:32
They are all Surlys, yeah. Maybe w- someday we're gonna throw you a curve. Oh, we- we've tested a Chumba for us. You've tested- I did... some other, some other bikes for us. I did. I tested a Chumba.
34:40
Did actually see the article, well, I don't know if it came out today, but, um, on the Horse Thief drop, they said they paved it out in, uh- Oh, really? Yeah.
34:49
But then I read the comments, and it was totally a, a- Oh, it was fake? It was fake. Oh. They- Is it April Fools' Day? [laughs] It looked like April Fools' Day.
34:58
Maybe that was April Fools' is when it actually came out, but I just saw it on Facebook today. Hmm. But, uh, that's when they had the, the Chumba out there in Fruita, in Roatan Trail.
35:07
We have a, we have a Ursa Major now in the test matrix. Angry Andy is putting that together. Came to us with a- He would be a better tester on that than I. Yeah, so th- they sent a rigid fork and a Bluto with it. Oh.
35:21
And some new Maxxis, uh, Colossus 4.8 tires that are supposedly their, their snow tire, so. Well, I've been t- What else would it be at 4.8? [laughs] Well, I've been riding the Minion on the, uh, RSD Mayor a little bit.
35:38
Mm-hmm. Both, uh, Mr. Jim and I felt it was just a smidgen slower than some of the other 4.8 tires we've been riding. Well, yeah, it's a super knobby tire, for sure. Yeah, but we haven't been on the...
35:49
It, it hasn't been snowing here yet, so- Yeah... you know, it's like- You ought to judge that tire against Bud and Lou. Exactly. You know, 'cause it's, it's a super aggressive tire.
35:58
I ran one for quite a, quite a long time here on the back of Otis, and, uh- The new purple Otis... yeah, Otis is coming back online. Yes.
36:07
The Richie Commando, that story is all up in Uncle Gomez's noggin and just has to spill itself off into the keyboard and off to you with little, little bloopers of happiness.
36:19
I didn't even see what tires I do have on that Ops. Do you guys always ride Bud and Lou? Negative. No. Have, have you run either one? Yes. A lot of p- do you like Bud and Lou, or do you like Lou and Lou?
36:31
I like Lou and Lou if I'm gonna ride- Yeah, I think that, that-... that knobby of a tire... yeah, because you don't need that little sideways knob in the middle. I think- Yeah. Yeah... that Lou and Lou do enough.
36:40
And I think for the way w- the way that I ride the majority of the time around here, it's a lot of transitioning, and there's trail with snow, and then there's street. Mm-hmm.
36:50
And the street part, I like- There's probably a lot of street around here. Well, sure. We got- We're in downtown Milwaukee Milwaukee. No, we got, uh, 12 miles of trails right outside the door here of the studio. Mm-hmm.
37:01
We can go check that out. Let's do that. I'd just like to add one thing to that- No... button blue conversation No, thanks. And that would be gnomes. You, yeah. [clears throat] Why is there no gnome tire yet? I know.
37:13
Why? Why? I gnome no reason why there isn't one. [laughs] Everybody knows if you want something that sticks to snow, it's a gnome. Like Velcro. [laughs] Like cat scratch fever. Ooh.
37:29
So we kind of gave away something already here on the old weekly contest. I know, so no- nobody else gets to call now. Well- Nobody else?... Stuart, Chris Stuart. Stuart. He won. And he lives in Utah.
37:41
[clears throat] Not, not- It's Utah. Utah. Yeah. You- [clears throat] So JK, I think we got a secret word coming up. Do you have [laughs] do you have one for next weekend? No. [laughs] Something. [laughs] Shotgun.
37:58
Something- Revenge... not, not shotgun, but- Not-... coffin? Not- Coffin... coffin. Is that hookah? Coffin. Coffin. Gotta not ride shotgun, but- Coffins are not cars.
38:14
All right, so huh, secret word for next week is coffin. So like the box that they put you in before they burn you up, that, that kind of coffin? Or C-A-U often. [laughs] Like,
38:26
like, like what I had to do and leave a couple weeks ago. You know, we're giving away a lot of stuff next week for the Global Fat Bike Day Toys for Tots deal. This is true.
38:37
But, uh- And we actually have- Should we give, do we need to give something away for, uh, just one word then instead of getting toys for all the kids? Oh, yeah.
38:43
Well, uh, just because we have a secret word doesn't mean we have to give anything away. Oh, yeah. We could just have a secret word for be like, you know.
38:50
Well, if you don't know the secret word, you can't talk to us next week. Yeah. [laughs] Fine. We'll just hang up on you. That'll be a good show. [laughs] Congratulations, click.
38:59
[laughs] So let's talk about Global Fat Bike Day. We actually already had someone that did the turkey burn, pie burn, and they, they gathered 27 toys. So you wanna win a [laughs] freaking Moonlander?
39:17
Get 28 toys. Yeah, there was a 41-second video of all of them riding by the camera, too. So it was verified in at least that there were 27 bikes there and people. Yeah.
39:27
There may have been more, but they collected up the toys. Yeah, so, uh, verified. First entry is in. Send in your entry. You can win a Moonlander Ops. This is the John Deere Moonlander.
39:39
It's in the picture in the show notes. Complete. It's, it's in my basement. It hasn't even been ridden by me. I mean- Even, even though you threatened it- Yeah... in several shows where- I threatened to file the [laughs]
39:52
I mean, did you teabag the top tube? I [laughs] uh, not yet. [laughs] He hadn't had the idea till you planted it there. Well, I wouldn't say that. Sorry, America.
40:04
[laughs] And then the other thing we have is we have a beautiful 1UP USA two bike rack for a two-inch receiver hitch. It is the bomb, made right in Plattekie- I'm betting-... Wisconsin...
40:19
I'm betting you could get a inch and a quarter on there, too, though. Oh, yeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah, you could probably get an adapter. Yeah. That's what she said. They're not actually made in Plattekie, but they're very close.
40:28
They're actually very close to Hirschmarm. All right. That's, like, five, not even five miles from Plattekie. Six minutes. Yeah. [laughs] Six minutes. Six minutes. Six minutes to get fresh air on, uh, uh, oh, uh, uh.
40:41
JK lives in Plattekie. [laughs] Anytime someone says six minutes, I have to hit the Drucky Fresh button. I'm putting on my spectacles. I think they're actually made in Dickeyville. Oh, yeah. Oh. That's, that is.
40:53
That's on the way to Dubuque. Dubuque. I used to, I used to run that- Maybe near there...
40:57
I used to run that stretch every three weeks on there, old, the old bike, uh, bike wholesale route when I was running through there. Oh, yeah?
41:04
Back when, back when Brian from Free Flight used to own the shop there in Plattekie. Yep. I don't know, Brian Walsh still doing something over there in Dubuque? Uh, yeah, he- Free Flight?... still owns Free Flight.
41:14
There you go. Yeah. He's got a few fat bikes, but, uh, the Platteville shop has a lot of fat bikes. He's got a lot of fat bikes. There you go.
41:22
If you're over there- He expanded his shop, and one side of his shop is only fat bikes... there you go, Southwestern Wisconsin. Southwestern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois if you wanna buy a fat bike. There you go.
41:30
Head up to Momentum Bikes in Platteville. He's our new sponsor of the show. He just, he just, he just plugged [laughs] he's, he's- Is that, is that still Jeff's place? No. No. It's, uh, Tim. Oh, okay. Tim Ingram. Yeah.
41:43
Tim Ingram. Yeah, Tim bought it from Jim, uh, Jim and Sarah. Jeff and Sarah. Jeff and Sarah. One of those, some of those name people. He bought it from him some days.
41:49
His shop is festooned with ornamental gnomes, by the way. Mm-hmm, yes. So as we were going full circle- He's a big fan of gnomes... full circle. But- Didn't you have a public service announcement to make? Yeah.
42:00
It's kind of our keep you safe segment of the show. Why? Safety, safety third. Well- That's what we always say...
42:06
this is one of those deals where manufacturers make something that they think is cool and then it doesn't work as well as they thought it did. So the fine folks over there at Felt- Oh...
42:14
who came, came to the Fat Bike Show with a pretty good, uh, product, I thought. Mm-hmm. Their, uh, their 2015 Felt Double Double 30 fat bikes, which are, you know, a little bit higher end ones with carbon seat posts.
42:26
They're part of a recall, of a larger recall of that carbon seat post, which may go snappity snap. Is it a f- carbon frame? Don't talk back. Sorry. [laughs] No, it's an, it's an aluminum frame. Oh.
42:38
I believe it's an aluminum frame. I could be wrong. So they just- Uh, we've, you've-... jumped in the game?
42:42
We've actually never had a Felt here to test because- They've been, they've been in the market for the last two seasons, I believe. Yeah. In the fat bike frame? In the fat bike market. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. I did not know.
42:51
Yeah, and it's actually a price point bike right around a G Spot, so. Mm. Well, this one is a- Not, not for the, not for the upgrade with the rest of this... yeah, this is a big one.
42:58
This is the big daddy with the carbon. So if you have a Felt fat bike and it has a carbon seat post, go see your dealer and, uh- Get a new baggie of weed? [laughs] Or no, a new seat post.
43:10
Uh, so have we drifted now over the border and we're in Mexico, where fat bike links are legal? Yes. Or are we in Scotland? Oh, well, Scotland's with us.
43:24
[laughs] Ay caramba, that was so good. We should be on TV. Yeah. [laughs] I grew up on TV, and I- Well, I, you know, Bruce has, plays around with, uh, tubeless setups a lot- Mm-hmm...
43:37
and I don't think he always has the tubeless compatible tire and the tubeless compatible rim that just goes snappity snap like we can get now. Yeah.
43:45
So he had, uh, something that he wanted to do, and he just, it going through the old split tube style again- Mm-hmm... for this particular setup, it worked very well, so it's like, it looks like, uh,
43:57
something that you ought to check out, because he's using a little bit of foam to build up the middle of the rim, and split tube, and blah, blah, blah, and for what he's using there, it looked like it works real well.
44:07
Cool. Is that saving that much weight? It's saving- A split tube?... 'cause they're very thorny over there. They have a lot of those briar patchy thorn things that they...
44:15
Yes, it saves them from having to change tires all the time [laughs] or tubes. It's rolling resistance, and, and the malleability of your tire, and the ability to run lower t- uh, tire pressure.
44:26
And also not get thorny, sticky things- That's right... poking holes in your tires. There's, there is the... And people say it virtually ends flats. Not true. I found ways to get flats. 'Cause I rode, um,
44:41
uh, what was it? Uh, 24 Old Pueblo. Mm-hmm. And I just put, uh, Stans in my tubes. Right. And everybody said that you could do that, but these, like, split tubes, it seems like a lot of work. And if- Well, if you put-...
44:52
are you gonna get the benefit out of it? If you put it in your tube and you get a big, you know, hole, it'll s- ooze out of the tube and help. I did that for a few years actually, where I put Stans inside of a tube.
45:01
Yeah. But why have the tube if you're gonna have the sealant? I mean, yeah, uh, then, and I guess that's the good question is are you saving that much weight? And is it- It's not a weight saving thing... better there?
45:12
It's more of a- It is a slight weight savings thing, but the real benefit, I believe, is what I said, rolling resistance. I noticed right away over, over small bump compliance, your bike just rolls.
45:25
Like, for instance, you just take grass, like a grass field, and you try and ride that. And if you ride side by side, you would say, "Wow, this feels easier," like one gear easier with the tubeless because- Okay.
45:39
Think about- I'm a single speeder, so that doesn't help. Think about- [laughs] He only got the one gear. Think about, okay, it's, like, going slightly downhill instead of being on flat. Oh.
45:48
It's like having number one on the old electric fat bike. Oh, oh, you're gonna get it. We're not getting into that, are we? Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God.
45:57
So, hey, if you got $7,000, you could get a, uh, handmade Budnitz. Now, he makes- Mit Rohloff und belt drive. I...
46:07
So he makes really beautiful curvy bike frames a la, you know, Retrotec- Yeah, this, see, this is one of those, like-... and Geeky Gadgets Moon Men and-...
46:14
sort of more mainstream stories that's like- How did he, how did he make it so- You know, I mean, it is a great bike, and we know that- Mm-hmm... but it's Geeky Gadgets. Who a- who are these clowns with this...
46:24
What do they do? With a name like geekygadgets.com. They just try and find the most expensive fat bike you can buy to put it on their website, you know? I don't know.
46:32
We should have them on the show, fill them full of liquor, and- Unleash hell... I don't know. Um, yeah- [laughs]... hell's, hell's fury perhaps. Hell's coming. What are you paying for with that?
46:44
I mean, where does the 7,000 come from? What are you getting? Well, the Rohloff is at least 16 hundo right now just for the hub. And fabrication. Just for the hub. Okay. And it's titanium. Okay. This is sponsored.
46:54
Do we, uh, have to talk nice? If you h- if you had seven grand- No... what would you [laughs] and you had to buy a fat bike, what would you do with that $7,000? [laughs] Yeah, come on.
47:04
Hookers, blow, one Surly bike, and throw a hell of a party. Oh, dear me. Maybe a few tanks. No. Ja, boy. Which, which Surly bike would you buy? If I had... Well, yeah.
47:13
I mean, if I only had one bike and you told me I can only have one bike- Mm-hmm, mm-hmm... I'd punch you in the mouth. Mm-hmm. And then I'd say- One fat bike, 'cause it's a family show. Oh, sorry.
47:22
Um- And not in the mouth- [laughs]... 'cause teeth, man. Yeah, sorry. You, you want, you, you- The, the one bike I ride all the time is my offset Pugsley, and I love it. And- Mm-hmm...
47:32
you know, I rode it down Single Speed Arizona. This is the albino. This- I rode it Old Pueblo, and I brought it back and rode to Sweaty Yeti. It went from 90 degrees to, like, 30 below whatever they had up there. Mm-hmm.
47:43
And, uh, it's just a do-it-all bike. It's a mountain bike frame. It's the Labrador retriever- Yeah... of fat bikes. It's an old friend. I mean, it's the basic, it's the bang for the buck.
47:51
It's m- maybe not really great at any one thing, but it's, you can ride that through anything. And- And yours is a pure albino, pink eyes, the whole deal. [laughs] It matches me. [laughs] Yeah.
48:06
They're, they're bloodshot eyes, huh? That Pugs- that Pugsley is whiter than you, homie. Yeah, it's got white tires now. White rims, white tires, I even did white rim strips. Um, trying to think if there's anything...
48:15
Oh, I couldn't get all white Crank Brothers pedals, but other than that. Has white grips, white bars, white stem, white seat post. White seat, yep. Crank wrap. Okay. White nipples. [laughs] Do you cover your nose?
48:28
I mean- I should've put pink nipples... it's visible. Why didn't I go pink nipples? Pink nipples. Yeah. Yeah. Have they covered when [laughs]...
48:34
I mean, when it comes to- So what's this, what's this, uh, from Sarah Palin's backyard? Oh, it's just one of those things with the mainstream media dealer- Oh...
48:42
again, but that's their local newspaper saying how popular- Oh, in Wasilla... fat bikes in Wasilla are getting popular in the valley. Does Sarah ride one? I would not have said anything except, yes, she doesn't.
48:53
[laughs] Well, maybe. I don't know. Sarah Palin's backyard to be a whale tail thong. You can see Russia from up on that fat bike. God damn. Hey, no plus bikes links this week, but, uh, we're hoping maybe, uh, springtime.
49:08
Well, thanks again to Surly for sponsoring the radio portion of today's broadcast Surly Bikes Parts Chaos. Learn more at surlybikes.com. I will. I will look up surlybikes.com when I get home.
49:26
Join us next week when the question of the week is who is your favorite bike Black Ribbon test pilot? Black Ribbon test pilot. Say spinner. It, it says, "Why are you so sexy?" [laughs] I couldn't remember the words.
49:39
