[upbeat music] Behold the Metatron, herald of the Almighty and voice of the one true God.
0:26
Behold the Metatron, herald of the Almighty and voice of the one true God. Broadcasting from the 33rd floor of the Nakatomi Tower, it's the Weekly Dose of Fat with your cherubic hosts, Sven and Gomez.
0:42
Welcome to the show, everyone. Bienvenidos, nombres. Hey, sitting directly across from me there is Mr. JK Livin. Thank you to two men who not only have the brilliant minds and wonderful wit, but can also sing. La la la.
0:57
Blah. Fat Bike Radio and the Weekly Dose of Fat is sponsored by Surly Bikes. Bikes. Tires. Chaos. Learn more at surlybikes.com. At surlybikes.com. Hey, JK, what's on the show this week?
1:13
We start the show at the event of the week with our special guest, Fatty Lumpkin.
1:18
We welcome listeners from all around the Fatosphere to behold the elegant grandeur of Fat Bike's biggest stars at the very first Gnomies, fat-bike.com's premier award show for fat bike stuff.
1:33
We award the final grand prize in our essay contest with Becker Sewing and Precision Beer Drinking.
1:39
We check in with the Fatty Farm Field Report, brought to you by the Winter Rush Fat Bike Series, the Michigan State Fat Bike Championships, and the 2017 USA Cycling Fat Bike National Championships.
1:51
And finally- It's time for the fat bike event of the week I am Fat? Uh, that's Iowa's Annual Majestic Fat Ride Around Trueblood.
2:06
So it's rumored that this, uh, I am Fat is Fatty approved.
2:11
So we have the one and only Adam Blake, AKA Fatty Lumpkin, on the studio line to confirm or deny his official stand on this and several other fat bikes events coming up over the next couple of months.
2:25
Please welcome to the radio show Mr. Adam Blake. What's up, Adam? Uh, uh, just leaving a nice Italian restaurant in, uh, Southwest Minneapolis. Yeah. You, uh, you're a transplanted Iowegian up there now.
2:43
Yeah, I'm from Colorado over to Minneapolis now. Right. So, uh, do you wanna give us the lowdown on I am Fat? Well, not as- Uh, yeah... not as much as before. [laughs] Yeah. You're doing really well, buddy.
3:01
You're, uh, I am Fat- Dude, it's a, it's a bike race called I am Fat. I am- Oh, that's what, that's what we're talking about. [laughs] Break it down. Break it down. Break it down.
3:12
Three team, three-person team or one person solo, three-hour race, um, enduro-style just like the, the bicycle snow bike enduro that's happening, uh, in February. Mm-hmm.
3:25
And, uh, there's been 100 people there every year, 100 or more people there every year for the last few years. They've got a really nice race venue.
3:35
It's got a heated, uh, lodge and some product, and we'll have demo bikes there. And it's, uh, it's a good time. Gonna race with Ben Shockey and Matt Gersteb, I think. Oh, nice. Ooh. Those are fast guys. [laughs] Wow.
3:53
Yeah. I'm gonna be the anchor on the team, I think. Darn. The, uh, the poster's really cool. Gomez pointed out all the little doodads and whatnots in there. Do you know who did that thing?
4:04
I don't know who did that poster this year. Uh, since I've been gone, I haven't been as involved.
4:10
Um, it started, I am Fat kind of started with me and Nick Sobocinski, who just posted his Pugsley up on your site- Right on... uh, in the Readers Rides.
4:20
Um, and we had this idea of running a race down by the beach, um, and running through some woods, and we cut trail and just kind of formed w- what's, uh, now some permanent trail down there. So is, uh, is...
4:35
Where's Trueblood? It's not, uh, it's... Is it on the Sugar Bottom area down there? No, it's on the south end of town actually- Oh... so the opposite edge of, uh, the Sugar Bottom would be.
4:46
It's, uh, about one block south and one block west of the fairgrounds where they have the Jingle Cross, uh, bike cross races. Right on. Yeah, yeah.
4:57
So in addition to, uh, and we should probably point out that the demos that you're gonna have out there are from Advocate Cycles because Adam is, uh, now works for Advocate Cycles and handles the demos- Yeah...
5:12
and, and basically takes care of Tim and everything, right? [laughs] Yeah.
5:20
I take care of, uh, you know, if something goes wrong, Tim and I talk about it and then he makes me make a phone call and take all the flak for it. Really? That Tim, he's a good guy. No, he- I like that Tim...
5:31
he's usually pretty fair. He's, he's super squatchy. Yeah, he's got some Squatch size. Yeah, for sure. And, uh, in addition to- We're, uh, we're s- What's that?
5:42
Well, I was gonna say we're sponsoring, uh, or at least in part sponsoring the Catfish Cup, which is a race this weekend up here in Minneapolis. Could you swing by Catfish and pick me up a pair of those cool new socks?
5:56
Thanks. I could try, yeah. I, I, I, I'm up to a size 14 now in my shoe So in addition to being the- This year is still growing...
6:05
in addition to being the face of fat biking, which really pisses some people off, and I never asked to be the face of fat biking, I just happen to trip and fall into it,
6:19
I am also the feet of fat biking at size 14, thank you very much. Thank you. Thank you again. Yes. And I, I never asked for that either, Adam. [laughs] But, uh- It, it was just thrust upon you. Thrust upon me. Exactly.
6:34
Thrust right in my [laughs] face. Maybe I'm thrusting my face at other people. It really pisses some people off.
6:42
'Cause we don't have any complaints about the writing, we don't have any complaints about the radio show, but whenever we put up a video [laughs] - Like, "What are them old guys doing talking about stuff?" Oh, my God.
6:54
People are mean. Jesus. Mitch. [laughs] Rhymes with bitch. [laughs] Yeah. Anyway, that's, that's a completely different story. So Catfish Cup, that's a pretty darn cool shop. Now, is that a Advocate shop?
7:12
Are they a dealer? Yeah. Yep. Yep. So swing in there and get your Advocate, uh, coffee mug brand. They got a sweet new gravel bike. Yeah, they carry everything from us. Yeah.
7:25
Yeah, I know that, um- They have Heydukes in stock. They've got T-shirts in stock, coffee mugs in stock. Right on. Crap.
7:34
Uh, I know that we've done a couple stories on Advocate stuff and, and mentioned a little bit about the, the name of the company and the vibe behind the name.
7:43
You wanna just remind our listeners what Advocate kinda stands for, besides kick-ass bikes? Yeah. We're, uh... So we're a specific benefit corporation, excuse me, and we, uh,
7:57
we donate 100% of our profits back to cycling advocacy, uh, via race promotion, via trail maintenance and trail promotion, and via donation to a few different organizations that we just think make cycling better for everybody.
8:15
Yeah, that was something- Uh-... that's pretty new there in Minnesota. I don't think every state has that, uh, that, that tax law that you can do that, but that's really, you know- No...
8:23
Tim, Tim jumped on that pretty quick. Only 30- [laughs] Yeah, 32 states, I think, have it. It's, I don't think it's coming to Wisconsin- So probably, but-... anytime soon. Or Illinois. [laughs] Huh. Well. Well.
8:37
Yeah, Wisconsin, ah. [laughs] There goes JK. I'm charging Wisconsin. J- I don't know what to say... JK's leaving the building.
8:47
[laughs] So in addition to the Catfish Cup, it looks like you're gonna come and stay at Lake Raven Lodge, and, uh, you're going to attack the Team Snowbike Enduro as well.
9:01
[laughs] Yeah, I've got, I've got an event every single weekend until, uh, the second weekend of March. Uh, I'm doing the Cuyuna Whiteout. I'm doing the Frozen Fat 40, uh, the Enduro. I'd like to get to Sweaty Yeti.
9:20
Oh, yeah. I'm gonna be at Sweaty Yeti. I love Enduro, but- Isn't that the same weekend as Frostbike? That is the same weekend as boop. Yeah, I don't do the Frostbike anymore. Right. Neither do we.
9:30
We were uninvited, I think. I believe the, the boop is called boop. [laughs] We just get ostracized. From boop. [laughs] Just something else he does well, folks, makes that beepy sound, I- Indeed.
9:47
Well, every time we say boop, we're supposed to say boop. [laughs] You know what I'm saying? All right. So, uh- I heard it. Yeah.
9:57
Well, of course, because you're on the super-secret line, and you have the secret coded decoder ring and stuff. Yep. We got another caller who now knows about the boop too. Uh-oh, jungle, we got another caller.
10:10
I don't know who that could possibly be. But you, my friend, have been, I don't know, probably the best guest we've had today. Without a doubt. Well, well that's awesome, guys. And, uh,
10:25
I don't know, let's, let's do this again sometime. I think that Adam might be our first three-time guest. Maybe.
10:31
Perhaps the first four-time guest and, if I'm missing one, in case I blacked out during one of those early shows. [laughs] I was gonna say- All right, man... I, I may have been there more than you were.
10:44
[laughs] Well, it'll be good to see. Hopefully we can catch up at, uh, the Enduro. Uh, but, uh- Yeah, for sure. I look forward to it. Joe puts on a great race. You, me, and Sven on a fucking team.
10:57
Let- Take that, Gerse- Let's do it... and Shockey. Yeah, Shockey. Suck on that. [laughs] It's too far for Shockey to come, I think. Yeah. Well, I'm not saying that they should come and race us.
11:08
[laughs] 'Cause that would be kind of a huh waste of gas. I concede, but I think that we'll, like, go- Yeah... go slower and have, have just as much fun, maybe. Maybe. I think we'll have pretty good fun.
11:22
All right, Adam, thanks for being on the show. Hey. Hey, thanks, guys. Have a great night. See ya. Tell Tim that, you know, we love him too, and so long. Will do. And that I think he's super squatchy, which is- I will.
11:36
I'll let him know that tomorrow. All right, dude. See you later. All right. Bye, man. And everybody keep their eyes out for our bikes. And Ty, Ty is out, so that's awesome. Right on. I'm getting one of those. Bye.
11:48
All right. All right. See you later. Bye-bye. [bell ringing] Top o' the falcon hill. Oh, you couldn't wait to ring that. I saw him having his hand over there. [laughs] He's like- Well, I didn't wanna miss my beat.
12:01
My, my... What did you bring today? Uh, Lakefront Brewery Growing Powers. Farmhouse style organic pale ale, brewed with organic barley and organic hops. Brewed and bottled right here in good old Milwaukee Shazam.
12:16
I have some- Well- I have some Sumatra decaffeinated, uh, coffee here This thing just doesn't work. Can I get that other one? Your, your ninja- That one doesn't work. [laughs]... ninja throwing star? I don't know.
12:26
I was just being lame. This one doesn't work either. Everything's broken. Use it as a food throw. [laughs] Hey, while we're, uh, while we're drinking this stuff here- Oh. Cheers... and cheersing- Ding, ding, ding...
12:38
let's, uh, let's take another call. Welcome to the radio show, Derek. Cheers. What's happening? Hey, how you guys doing? Travis. T-Money. What's happening, T? What's happening? I, I saw a picture of you- Hi...
12:52
on Instagram, man. From the race weekend? Yeah. You had on the Yeti- Okay... Van Evil T-shirt, right? Or maybe somebody else had it. I don't know. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That wasn't me that put that in.
13:05
No, I didn't realize I was captured in my awesome Yeti Van Evil T-shirt. Yeah, it's on the, uh, I think it's on the 907 Instagram feed. Oh, cool.
13:15
Yeah, I tried to get in to, uh, upload some pictures for you, and I, uh, I couldn't figure it out, man. Yeah, you gotta, the, it's, Instagram is unique.
13:23
You can only upload pictures through the mobile app, so you have to use your phone, so. Oh. And sometimes you gotta find tricky ways to get pictures on your phone, like emailing them to yourself- Yep...
13:36
and then checking your email on your phone. Right. Shazam. Yeah. So. Clever that way. Yeah. But now everybody knows the secret, so good luck, Instagram. You're gonna be flooded with cool-ass shit.
13:52
So what's, uh, what's happening up Anchorage way, Travis? Uh, you know, just trying to get my ride up into you guys for the Frosty Bottom this weekend. It was, uh, man, that was, that was a great race. Awesome finish.
14:06
Very fun day. And, uh, had a little meeting today with Katie Merchant, uh- Oh, yeah... downtown on the Big Fat Ride and Expo. Nice. So things are rolling along good there. Cool. And you guys got snow now, right?
14:21
Just a bit. Yeah, yeah. Trails are good. Yep. Right before the race, uh, they were gonna call it on Wednesday, and everybody was pretty much assuming it was gonna be canceled.
14:32
Then Tuesday afternoon, it started snowing, and by Wednesday midday we had about two inches on the ground. Maybe two and a half. So it, uh, covered everything up and, and saved the race. Cool, man. Very nice. Yeah.
14:45
Been kind of, been kind of chilly here. It's been, uh, been well below zero, so we're, we're feeling the, uh- Oh... Alaskan air there a little bit. Y'all people told me I was crazy for riding my bike.
14:57
[laughs] [laughs] Granted, I know didn't have pants on, but- Again. Again. [laughs] But, you know, gotta let- Were you sporting the shammy T-backs?
15:14
Uh, I, I was just going full, full squatch. You know, wearing hair underwear. Right. Hair pants. [laughs] Where's that picture?
15:27
[laughs] Uh, I'm not, I'm not allowed to be on the internet anymore. [laughs] Apparently, apparently people hate my face.
15:39
[laughs] Everything else is fine, but apparently everybody else hates my face, or some people. Andrew? Right. Come on back to Anchorage, man. We still like your face here. [laughs] Ah, nice.
15:50
It's a big love fest here- You're kind, you're kind, but-... at Fat Bike Radio. Yeah, yeah. So anyways, I'm not, I'm not, uh, you know. I'm not, yeah. [laughs] I'm not worried about it.
16:03
And also, I'm just not everybody's cup of tea. I mean, fuck. Well, how about we take a quick break here before we light the fuse on the premiere edition of the Gnomies? The Gnomies.

20:27
shredding this thing. I'm all aflutter with anticipation here. It's 45NRTH Dillingers. I concur.
20:38
Public enemy number one, and the finest studded tire in 2015. You, you got the Dilly 5s there, right, uh, Mr. Man, Travis? Yes. Yes, I do. Right on. I absolutely love them. All right.
20:56
That was a little aside to our award show. That's like, like we went out to the audience. [laughs] Out to the audience and, "Let's just ask this guy. Oh, Travis, hi."
21:07
So here to present the awards, or the nominees, and present the award for best rim wide is once again Tony Award winner, that's Tony Berger- [laughs] Sven Hammer. Oh, thank you. Thank you.

21:44
And I'm so excited. The winner is- [laughs] [paper rustling] HED Big Deal. [sighs] Yeah. L- local United States action from up there in Minneapolis. I know Andy is gonna be so proud.
22:00
Andy couldn't come to accept the award, so we'll just send it to him or something. And we have now the best rim wider. That was the best rim wide, now this is the best rim wider, and the nominees are
22:18
the Surly Clown Shoe, the Sarma Narran Carbon, the HED BFD 100 millimeter carbon, and the Nexi Kai'Lin 100 millimeter carbon rim.

23:07
Bike Bag Dude, Revelate Designs, Bark and Bear Bagworks, and Porcelain Walkit. [laughs] I was trying to read.

23:38
couldn't, couldn't come and accept the award, so we'll just have to box his up and, uh, send it up there in Walkit. [laughs] And our last award of the night is, uh, gonna be presented by,

24:26
Excited again. The Wolf Tooth single track pokey. Oh, yeah. Hey. Highly innovative, uh, attachment little, uh, device on the end of those Wolf Tooth's.
24:38
And they have the whole low rise bikini brief thing going for them, so that must have been big in the academy. Right on. That's, that's the Nomi's.
24:46
And, uh, I don't know if it counted last week when we awarded the Skookum as 2015 bike of the year, but should we- I'm not changing my answer... should we, should we say that that was a Nomi? That's a Nomi.
24:59
All right, I agree. Nomi. I'm a member- That's like the best picture Nomi... I'm a, I'm a member of the, of the academy, and I concur. JK? I concur. All right. So Skookum. Skookum.
25:11
So let it be written, so let it be done. And Greg couldn't be here to accept the award for, [laughs] for the best fat bike of 2015. Best fat bike, 2015. Man. Travis can go break the news to him in person.
25:22
Yeah, Travis, you should hit her up. Travis, run over to his speedway and say- "Greg, you won a Nomi"... "You won't, won't believe this." And like, "Uh-" "Those jackasses at Fat Bike Radio gave you an award."
25:33
[laughs] Be like, "I feel weird, and somehow I think I know that Gomez has something to do with it." So, uh, what are we gonna do now? [laughs] I don't know.
25:48
[laughs] It's- Why do you keep saying- Is there like an after party? We didn't talk about, like, the whole, we didn't do the red carpet. And now you're like, how we were gonna pretend I had a polar bear on a gold chain.
26:00
[laughs] This polar bear thing. I know. It's- Needs to be resolved. Apparently so. [laughs] It's time for the Fatty Farm Field Report already? It could be. It could very well be.
26:13
We've strolled into the Fatty Farm Field Report, and maybe that's why I'm confused, because that was my, [laughs] that was my line, wasn't it? Yeah. Oh, dear.
26:22
Well, this Fatty, this Fatty [laughs] Farm Field Report this week, the f- report thing, is presented by the Winter Rush Fat Bike Series.
26:31
Winter Rush is the home of the Michigan State Fat Bike Championships, and we'll be your hosts of the 2017 USA Cycling Fat Bike National Championships.
26:40
For more information, click the Winter Rush banner located on the Lido deck of your show notes, or visit winterrush.com. Oh, yeah. So
26:57
back to sewing bag contest. Yeah. Apparently we have two listeners, two, that can write. Oh, can use a- So-... plural on the listeners thing now... we have a winner. Tell our essay winner what they've won, JK.
27:13
Our essay grand prize winner gets to totally conquer a camouflage 40 Below down tube bag from Tepper, Tupper and Becker of Fairbanks, Alaska. That's Top Top over at Becker Sewing and Precision Beer Drinking.
27:26
Read this, Tupper. Two people, two people, [laughs] took the literacy challenge. Hey, stay, stay in school, kids. You, you know a lot more than most other folks out there. Our winner is
27:41
our very own Lieutenant Evan Larson. And there'll be a, uh, there'll be a copy of his essay in the show notes or a link to a, to the essay. I don't know how g- it's, Sven's gonna work his magic. It's verbose.
27:55
It's, it's lengthy. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Right on. And the, the other young lady that sent in an essay, I'm sorry, you lose. And you know who it is? It's, it's the wife of Chris Stewart. Oh, right on.
28:09
So- Who is a multi time winner- Right... his own self. Right. Not Patrick Stewart, the guy that was in Star Trek. [laughs] Roald Stewart.
28:19
Yeah, so our amigos over there at Fat Bike Bikes, Fat Bike B- [laughs] Where am I coming up with that? It's Borealis Fat Bikes. [laughs] I hallucinated words. [laughs] What is going on? That's what is, is in there.
28:34
What is, what is causing this? [laughs] Well, that's like Fat, they're thefatbike.com- It's true... with no dash. It's true.
28:41
So Borealis Fat Bikes, they made a video from, uh, one of our events of the week from a couple of weeks ago, Ulerfest. It totally, it, it, it... If this is the precursor
28:54
to the World's Uncrested Butte, I may not be coming back. Oh. I'm just saying. All right. Well, let's take a break so the folks at home can watch. And, uh, when we come back, I think we'll take a call. You think so?
29:10
All right. I think so. Hey, this is Travis Brown. Do you hear that? That's your bike calling you, so turn off these chodos and go ride your bike. You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio. What's up, cats and rats?
29:27
And welcome backs from the break. Now lay back and enjoy some melodic fat cat chat with one more dose from Sven and Tio Gomez. JK Livin, ladies and gentlemen. [hands clapping] Hey, little JK- [laughs] With your-...
29:43
with your beard pressed against the window. [laughs] There is no beer for you- Organic beers... beers for you today. [laughs] Only- [laughs] [hands banging] All right. Sorry about that. We, we got a, we do have a caller.
29:56
Oh, yeah. Let's take a caller. Hey, welcome to the radio program, caller. Who's on the line? Hey, Greg, is it, or is Greg there? I'm, I'm here. I'm Sven today. Okay, cool. I'm in the guise of Sven at this point.
30:10
[laughs] It's, it's- Sven... it's John, John Murphy calling in from up there- Yeah, uh, Bayfield... up there, Superior way. Yeah, Bayfield way. Yeah. I'm, I'm smelling that babka.
30:22
[laughs]Not on my breath. [laughs] Okay, well, th- this weekend you'll be smelling it on all the first place finishers. Oh.
30:36
We got Noreen down there at, uh, Koko's Bakery and Restaurant, she's making four babkas, massive, looking like fat tires for fat bike with the chocolate frosting, the whole nine yards. So what, what do you call them?
30:51
Bab- babka? It's a Polish, uh, pastry. No way. And it's usually, uh, made in a wheel. Uh-huh.
31:00
She makes these massive wheels, and then she puts the chocolate icing on it, and looks like, uh, it'd be the, the tastiest fat bike tire you ever ate.
31:08
[laughs] Well, if you want it to be the best fat bike tire of 2015, it would be, uh, either a Husqvarna, a 45 Nord Husqvarna, or the, uh, specialized Ground Control one five-inch tire out of left field. Yeah.
31:24
A lot of people don't know just how kickass that tire is. I haven't spent a lot of time on it, but, uh, I hear good things. Indeed. So, uh- There it is... you guys are having a big race.
31:34
Uh, you, are you biking across the bay? Uh, the race starts at 1:00. Uh-huh. Um, so going to be a 16-mile and a 8-mile, uh, loop, so it's basically two separate races.
31:47
When you sign up, you can sign up as early as 11:30 that day. You can pick, uh, the 8-mile loop or you can do the 16-mile double loop. Killer. And that's on the new trails that you guys are working on.
32:00
Pretty much on the cross-country ski trails.
32:03
So Mount Ashbay there has, uh, donated their, uh, groomers, and they're grooming a nice wide track, and then maybe about the last, oh, mile and a half of the loop is gonna be single track. Sounds like some good variety.
32:18
Passing lanes and single track. Exactly. Exactly. So the, uh,
32:25
just wanted to call in and remind everybody it's coming up this weekend, and, uh, we've got some babka waiting for somebody that wins first place in one of those events. Right on. Yeah. Be it eight mile or 16.
32:38
That's, uh, that's this weekend. Yeah. Yeah. This Saturday. Couple of races going on this weekend. There's, there's fat bike races all over the place.
32:47
Yeah, fat bike races are just- Yeah, last time we got, in fact, uh, the ice- Everywhere... [clears throat] is, uh, up to 14 inches thick down there at Ashland on Lake Superior. Wow.
32:56
So, uh, that's- That's, you can, you can drive a truck on that... that's why it's on the 23rd. What's that? Said you could drive a truck on that. Yeah, yeah.
33:05
The, the, the ice shanties are up, and, uh, it's become shanty town again, and the ice fishermen are happy, and it's business as usual out there on the ice, so. And that means fat biking on the ice.
33:18
Well, it sounds fantastic. I've been out. Yeah. Riding on the ice always scares the crap out of me, and that's why I do it. Yeah. [laughs] There's nothing better, you'd be riding out there and you hear that crack- Oh.
33:30
[laughs]... going maybe about a mile away, and it gets closer and closer, and within, like, seconds it blows right by. [imitates explosion] [coughs] Excuse me. [laughs] Sounds like a, a thrilling time on the cracked ice.
33:42
Yeah. I heard a couple of big- Yeah, yeah... big cracks, and I, I like, I scream out, out like- [laughs] I'm like, "Ah!" [laughs] So it'd be like- Screams like a little girl. Oh, yeah.
33:54
[laughs] 'Cause, you know, I don't know if you've noticed, but I'm kinda heavy, and I always think, "Oh, this is, I'll just be swallowed up." But then I keep on thinking, it's like, mm.
34:05
You, you can make friends close when you're doing the ice rides, because they'll say, "No, no, go ahead. Go up and- "Go ahead." "No, no, really. Go ahead." [laughs] "No, no, after you."
34:15
So I was all f- They make you feel so special... I was all freaked out until I saw an ATV track, and then I was like, "All right. I'm, I'm, I know I'm cool." Yeah.
34:23
"I'm not as [laughs] amazing as an ATV, as a big fat dude on an ATV."
34:26
[laughs] But you know, the funny thing is you still get locals that get all worked up because they see you on a bike out there, and like you said, the snowmobiles and ATVs are all over the place, but, "Oh my God, there's somebody on a bike out there."
34:38
It's like, "Okay?" [laughs] And? Right, exactly. But, uh, yeah. All right, John. Well, cool, John. Thanks for calling in. Good luck with the race. Sure. And, uh- Well, thanks for allowing me to bump up the race again.
34:52
Bump up the volume. Bump up the volume. Oh, yeah. Dude, we love, we love when people call in. Hopefully be back- Call in to-... maybe this weekend, but next month on the 13th for the ice bike ride. Oh, yeah.
35:01
From Ash went out to the lighthouse to the Sea Caves and back, 15 miles of Lake Superior ice. That sounds like a good one. Yeah, that does sound good. That will be fun.
35:10
I think I got my hardcore guys really focusing on that, because 15 miles of Lake Superior is pretty dang cool. Right on. Oh. No lane riding there. Well, cool. All right, John- Think of that in Colorado...
35:22
we are going to move into the links now, I think. Is that where we're at? Somewhere. Thanks, John. I'm on Facebook. [laughs] Bye. Sure. Thanks. Bye. I'm Facebooking now. Just kidding. Well, not really.
35:36
So we, uh, we're, the Ellsworth, the Buddha. We're gonna g- Talked to, or I, I emailed. I talked via email through my fingers to Lonnie over there at, uh, Ellsworth. Yeah.
35:47
And he's got somebody, a rep that has one in our area who's gonna lay it on us for a couple weeks. Cool. Size large. Sweet. It'll probably fit you. Yeah, it'll probably fit me. Maybe.
35:57
And, uh, if, for those f- folks out there who live in a shelter, an apartment, a trailer, or a garage, or an apartment, you probably wanna hang your fat bike up instead of just, uh, leaning it against the wall there, or the radiator, or the window.
36:14
Uh, so this rack thing, it's money for you. Yeah. You should check it out. Steady rack. Yeah. We're getting one of those to test, too. You're getting one of those to test.
36:24
Stick it right on that, I can stick it right on that big pillar right there. Bang. We could stick seven of them on there. It's like... And it'll be like a, what do you call those? A lazy Susan of fat bikes.
36:36
Yeah, you can just push one and they'd all go- Spin them around... tinky tinky, tinky tinky, tink.
36:40
[laughs] We get one of those Sharper Images tie rack things to hook that up, and we'll be able to, like, pick out what fat bike we wanna ride electronically. Electronica-fied. Uh, there's another link here from Joe Boo.
36:54
He's a pretty regular blogger about fat bike stuff up there in the, uh, the Iron Range area.
36:59
Uh, he's been working on some trails, and he had a post that asked for people to just, uh, weigh in on what makes a fat bike trail fun for them so he can take- I wrote-...
37:11
take that into account when he does his fat bike trail building. I wrote in gnomes- No. [laughs]... on his, on his, uh, survey. Right on.
37:21
A lot, a lot of people don't take into consideration the fantasy woodland creature, uh, quotient on a trail, but I'm not just some people. You know what I'm saying? Yeah, so check that- [laughs]...
37:33
check that link out and, and you don't have to put gnomes down anymore 'cause Gomez already did it. Right. I brought that to, uh, Joe Boo's attention.
37:42
So Chumba is, uh, auctioning off one of the, uh, the, their Ursa Majors with all of the Wanderlust bags. Which by the way, we have- We have one of those... an Ursa Major staring at us- Right... from across the room.
37:54
Right. We're gonna take some glamour shots of it, and, uh, put some Vaseline on the, on the lens, and then we're gonna send that bike out to our new Ace Bike Taster, uh, David Golover,
38:10
who has a, a friend Dustin out there that has been doing some great video work. Yep. And, uh- Probably, probably like their faces better than, than other ones that might be [laughs] Yeah.
38:19
We're, we're thinking they might be the spleen and, uh, and I don't know, the nape of the neck of fat biking. What do you think? Speaking of nape of the neck and Vaseline and all that stuff- [laughs] Yeah...
38:31
Penthouse is, is not going to be publishing any print magazines anymore. Duh, print is dead. There's, there's that- [laughs]... internet thing out there I heard. [laughs] Thank you, Elon.
38:42
[laughs] I was just thinking about coming out with a fat bike magazine. I think these niche-y magazines are, they're, they're money, man, money. I thought you were gonna say there's gonna be no Penthouse Forum anymore.
38:52
[laughs] No. Oh, no. And- Nope, it's all on the interwebs now. I know. Yeah. So. Speaking of the interwebs. So tell us more about that, that Chumba link. What's that all about, the special operations charity auction?
39:06
It, it's about the company that makes the, the multi-cam, the, which apparently is the camouflage pattern to the spepal- special operations of the US Armed Forces and elite SWAT teams across our great nation.
39:23
[laughs] It looks like, uh, it's all digitized and- Yeah... and it looks like, um, 8-bit camouflage. So they're, they're at, at some, uh, what do they call those things? What is, what is Interbike? It's a convention.
39:37
Yeah. There's some sort of convention where, uh, these, uh, these people that use multi-cam will be all there, so it's probably a law enforcement or some sort of, uh, I don't know.
39:50
It's, it's some, where they're going- Some... I, I'm, it's too complicated for me. They're gonna auction this bike off. It's for special operations charities.
39:58
I didn't really [laughs] wanna ask too many questions 'cause they're, like, special operations- Yeah... so good at killing things. Right. I don't wanna become the corpse of fat biking. [laughs] Hey,
40:11
speaking of killing things- Yeah... we're killing it on Instagram. Yeah. You know, you guys should really check out Instagram because now we have the entire Nomi Academy posting shizzle up there.
40:25
So there's, there's some cool stuff. Yeah. And, uh, we got a plus bike link this week. Bruce. Bruce. He's, uh, he's g- doing a, like a month-long experiment with trying 29 plus on the beach,
40:39
and I'm curious to see what he comes up with because- I'm interested... uh, I've given it a go with a 27 and a half by 3 and went, "This is crap." Yeah, I, I tried it on 29 plus at, uh,
40:52
one of the events that Chris runs down there in Florida. Oh, yeah, I remember that one. You turned around after, like, a mile or got off- [laughs]...
40:57
it's like, "This is-" Uh, yeah, I think I'm just gonna waddle back to camp. [laughs] Well, that was, and that sand down there, though, it, it's even, um, it's different than the stuff even up here- Right...
41:08
by Sheboygan that we ride a lot in that it's really, maybe it's bigger grains or something, but you- Right... sink in that stuff. Right. Oh, right. And it doesn't wet out very well.
41:17
It, it, it just doesn't stick together. It's all the- It doesn't clump... it's all the PCBs, heavy metals, and asbestos. Oh, right. Yeah, that's a Superfund site area.
41:25
So, uh- And all the nuclear stuff from the power plant right there. Oh, I think they keep track of that nuclear stuff. It's the government. They take care of us. Oh, yeah. Don't worry. [laughs] Don't worry.
41:35
Everything's fine. So you went, uh, you went and did ride out there in the cold weather. I did, and you know, my feet got cold after, after an hour.
41:45
After probably sooner than an hour, they started to get cold, and I started doing, you know, you wiggle your toes. You start, you create... I have enough room in my boots, and I was in my new, uh,
41:56
Keen boots, and I had- Minus 30 wind chill... yeah, it was minus 30 wind chill, and it was right around just above zero. It was, like, two or three degrees when I went out.
42:05
And, uh, the, the thing was it was the wind that got you, dude.
42:10
But I'm working with, uh, Kevin, or we're working with Kevin Breitenbuch on an article about how to keep your hands and feet warm, and I've seen some of the, uh, some of the drafts. There's good stuff in there.
42:21
Kevin's got it dialed. And, uh, you know the Alaskans? No. He lives in a place where it's below zero for, like, two-thirds of the year. Yeah. So.
42:32
You can't, uh, you can't ride for the amount of time those guys are outside and not know how to keep your stuff warm. [laughs] I love it though.
42:40
He's like, "Basically, you have to accept no matter what, your feet are gonna be cold."
42:45
[laughs] They're not gonna freeze off, though, but they're- As long as you don't lose any digits, they're just gonna be uncomfortably cold. Right. So, and we have, uh, we have that going.
42:56
We're, I've been riding studded tires because I did ride out on the lake quite a bit this, uh, over this last weekend and early this week when it's been cold. So we have that going.
43:08
We have, uh, 45NRTH Dillinger's and the Bontrager Gnarwhals to compare. Studded tires? Studded tires. Tires. Studded tire shootout? Well, it's more like a studded tire duel right now.
43:21
It, it's, yeah, it's like a studded tire, uh- [coughs] [clears throat] Yeah. Is that what that... It's when you walk back and you shoot at each other and stuff? Something like that. Is that a duel? Yep. [laughs] Yeah.
43:30
So that's what it is. So I have them all measured up. I have them all mounted up. We kinda wanna get two bikes with 80 millimeter rims that
43:41
three to five people can ride on a set course, and then fill out a little card, a rate card, about how they corner, how they brake, la, la, la.
43:50
And then we'll have some sort of highly subjective, crazy shootout with some conclusions that these tires are better. Can we do a- These tires are not as better... can we do, have a video?
44:02
Like, with them, like walking away from each other or riding away and turning and- [laughs] And then shooting their- Pa-tow... shooting their studs at each other. Yeah.
44:11
Those 45NRTH have those, have a tungsten carbide, uh- Concave... yeah. And it's tungsten carbide nestled inside of an aluminum carrier. Right. Super high-tech, man.
44:25
I got the five-inch Dillinger's on my bike and went down to the river trails, and they were glare ice. Mm. Man, but they stuck nice. Yeah. Not, not so the badger-approved tires on the other bike- [laughs]...
44:35
the guy was riding down there [laughs] that I saw. Badgers don't get out in the ice that much. Yeah, I don't know how they can approve tires. I,
44:43
I- Maybe they make those little sandals out of the tires and they put them on their little feet. Maybe. [laughs] But, uh, yeah. Yeah, the studs work, so. Absolutely do.
44:52
And, uh, we'll, we'll, we'll have more about that coming up here on the, uh, Fat Bike Radio Network. Hey, you're, uh, you're not even gonna be here next week. I am not gonna be here next week. I'm gonna be there.
45:07
Where the hell are you going? Crusty Butt, man. Crusty Butt. Crusty Butt. Woo, for Fat Bike Worlds. You gonna do a little, uh, call-in, or? I'll probably just get there that day. Oh, that's true.
45:19
So- Won't be much to say... like, I talk about the airplane ride. [laughs] Yeah. Can't believe it. Well, you know, we don't actually- I flew all the way here... we don't actually post the show till Friday, though.
45:29
I know, but- So you have plenty of time. Well, that's true. I could talk- You could be like, "It's cold and it's Colorado." It's Colorado. I am so baked. [laughs] Do they have a dispensary right there in Crested Butte?
45:42
I am not knowing. Let's find out, 'cause you know what we have? We have this thing called the interwebs. [laughs] Siri, find me weed. [laughs] [sighs] I'm pretty sure weed grows everywhere. Crested Butte dispensaries.
45:57
Hmm. Hmm. Soma Crested Butte Herb Shop, Acme Healing Center of Crested Butte, and- Oh, I like the sound of that, the Acme Healing Center. [laughs] Oh. A giant [laughs] rock strapped to my bike.
46:11
[laughs] How many, how many people are in Crested Butte? 'Cause we got Boomtown, Crested Butte Wellness Center, Erba Crested Butte, and Backcountry Cannabis. Hmm.
46:19
All there in Crested Butte, a town of about what, 4,000 people? [laughs] Well, it's a big tourist area. Well, that's true. So it's legal there, so I'm gonna probably try it. [laughs] There's a first time for everything.
46:35
Indeed. So if you see me and I have [laughs] an unbelievably big grin on my face, [laughs] oh, I'm just happy. Happy to be there. They're at Worlds, it's gonna be... it's a great party.
46:49
There's a lot of cool stuff going on, and I cannot wait, personally. I think I'm gonna get to ride a Frosthammer. I know I'll get to ride all the Borealis business. Uh, who knows what else will be roaming around there.
47:05
Mm-hmm. Led Zeppelin will be roaming around there. Led Zeppelin. JK, uh, earified us a little bit with the, uh- I know... Led Zeppelin before the show. Indeed. A very, uh, it's like Pat Benatar does Led Zeppelin.
47:19
[laughs] She, yeah, she doesn't, she doesn't growl all that much. She's got no, she got no grit. Well, the live might. Maybe. Yeah. Hardened up a bit. That was studio.
47:28
I think you don't have any, you don't have any lives, you don't have any bootleg Led- [laughs]... Zeppelin. I left them at home. Oh. [laughs] I left them in my boots. So yeah, that's, uh, that's the word, dudes.
47:40
So what do you guys have planned for next week's show? Do you have a guest? Mm, maybe. Do you have a contest? Don't know. Do, do you have a call-in question? Probably not. Uh- Do we have a call-in question?
47:51
Well, we'll make one up. We'll put it on the site. You guys kinda skipped over that part of the whole thing. We went, uh, I think there was one. Yeah. What is the worst fat bike podcast on the net?
48:01
[laughs] How many, how many others are there in the running? Uh, there, there, there is, there is, I, I know of at least- Well, Fat C- Fat Camp. They, they're better than us. Oh, yeah. Without a doubt.
48:14
Andy, I love that guy. Ken, he's tall. Oh. Everything's better when it's tall. Tall and knowledgeable. Indeed. Well, it's that time again. I know. Thanks to Surly for sponsoring the radio portion of today's broadcast.
48:29

48:37
Once again, join us next week when the question of the week is, what is the worst fat bike podcast on the net? Or some other question we come up with. Or some other question. [laughs] They'll let you know. Maybe. Maybe.
48:49
I'll be on an airplane. You can call in anyway. Yeah. Plus, we invite event, invent [laughs]-- we invent some event promoters. We invite them to call in and pimp your local fat bike race, like John did today.
49:00
Like John did, yeah. And, and also Fatty Lumpkin. Yeah, indeed. Help us, help you, bang the gong of fat bike fun. Call 818-918-2453 anytime, day, night, in between day and night, dawn, dusk. You can leave us a message.
49:18
You can just make clicking noises into the phone. You could ask, "Why? Why is Scoob as on the video?" So, uh, yeah. Adios, amigos. Till then.
49:36
[laughs] [laughs] We are sorry, but the show hasn't ended. You've been listening to Fat Bike Radio's Weekly Dose of Fat.
