Weekly Dose of Fat, show number 29.
0:04
[upbeat music] From deep within the freshly washed-off
0:25
fat bike [laughs] radio studios. It's your weekly dose of fat [laughs] with your hosts Sven and Gomez. So- That, that's all we're gonna get out of him this week, isn't it?
0:37
[laughs] On the, on the drive into the studio today, I was talking to Colin on the radio, and he's like, "Dude, guess what shirt I've got on?" And I was like, "Well, I'm just gonna guess the shirt I've got on.
0:50
It's a Gnomefest '11 shirt. We have the same fucking shirt on." You guys are, like, 1,500 miles away but connected by some connection. [laughs] Connected. We're all connected, fat bikers. Yeah.
1:01
Actually, that's what I thought intro was, was running. [laughs] Not with intro. [laughs] No, I had n- that was... Oh, that's, that is so wrong. Got, uh, got JK- You s- yeah, get out of my head, dude.
1:15
We, uh, we got JK Livin over there like [laughs] Yeah, we got JK Livin living in my head, man. He's all up in my head because that was a super-secret story- [laughs]... that I did not reveal until just then.
1:27
That is weird. That's weird. I'll be- So let me introduce to you the one and only Chris Daisy and the Zion Cyclery Fat Bike Band. Hey, guys. Our show is sponsored by Surly. In three words, Surly is bikes, parts, chaos.
1:45
Learn more at surlybikes.com. Right on. What do we have, uh, what do we got going on the show this week, JK? Yeah, what's up? What's up? Nope. What's up? [laughs] The godfather of fat biking Down Under, Mr.
1:57
Wayne Chapman, will be joining us on the program. We're gonna talk about Global Fat Bike Summit, and we got lots and lots of links. Before all that, I think we got beer. Beer? Beer. Yeah. Is this it?
2:13
This week's beer [laughs] is courtesy of the folks down the hall at Schlick Cycles.
2:17
Uh, there was a bit of a party there last weekend, and there's still quite a bit of beer swirling around in the half barrel, so we're happy to help them, uh, drink up this Lakefront IPA. Oh, yes.
2:29
Colin X of Lakefront, that's his... Because he moved away to a cardboard box in Denver. [laughs] You got his kegerator. Yeah, that's true.
2:42
This is, like, almost like- Derek cleaned it up, and then Mark rehabbed the actual workings of it. So it's spitting beer out. It's a little foamy still, but we'll probably have that figured out by next [laughs] week.
2:53
It is beer in the studio, though, which is a good thing. Right, and out of the red plastic, traditional red plastic cups. Right. Except for JK's got- Yeah, I've got the clear one. Yeah, you can see.
3:04
But I can see its, uh, caramel colors. We've actually had this beer on the show before. This is, I think, one of our fir- if not our first repeat beer.
3:13
I think it is our first repeat beer, unless you talk about, you know, the Squantos, the second tier, the fucking Discraft- Oh, right. Yeah, the fluffer. The fluffer. The fluffer beers. [laughs] Right? Um, God, I'm, uh...
3:26
[laughs] Well, if we, if we had to, if we had to keep, you know, breaking tradition, this is a beer I'd do it with 'cause I, I drink Lakefront IPA all the time, whether I'm doing a show or not.
3:37
So I'm all for making it the official [laughs] show beer. [laughs] Unless we wanna keep messing around with other ones, which I don't, I don't care if we do it either, but- I'm telling you, we have a beer shaman coming.
3:47
Oh, oh, this one. This is the beer, if I were on a desert island, this is the beer I would request- Oh... pretty much. See, mine is next to it.
3:52
It's either, it's either that or it could be a different one on any given day, but right now, this is what [laughs] I'm on my desert island with. This is pretty good. And, you know, I'm new to the IPA thing.
4:02
I'm the candy ass out of the three of us- [laughs]... as far as, you know- You could be... how many IBUs make me happy, and this beer works for me and will- This is not as b-...
4:13
work for my dysfunctional brain it will add to me later. It's not, um, as bitter as what we had last week. I agree, but you know what? That beer last week,
4:23
after the show, we poured it into glasses, and I came around to it, you know? So- Yep... there's something to say about- All beer is good beer. That's what I'm gonna say. [laughs] All right. All beer is good beer.
4:36
All beer is good beer. You know, we're gonna be back with Wayne's World. Wayne's World. Wayne's World. Wayne's World. Wayne's World. Wayne's World. Wayne's World. Wayne's World. Woo. Wayne's World.
4:46
This is Ned Overland, and I listen to the Weekly Dose of Fat on Fat Bike Radio. [upbeat music] When it comes to fat bikes, Zion Cyclery in Zion, Illinois, has you covered.
5:03
They stock fatties from Surly, Salsa, 907, Borealis, and Trek, as well as everything from 45 North.
5:12
The staff is friendly, the mechanics are top-notch, and they stock the largest selection of fat bikes in the Chicago-Milwaukee area. There's a mountain bike park and some great beach riding in Zion, so come.
5:23
Make a day of it. Call 847-746-2200 or visit zioncyclery.com.
5:36
Welcome to the show, Wayne Chapman, the godfather of fat biking in Australia. Hey, welcome to the show, Wayne. How you guys? How's things over there? Oh, pretty good. Pretty good. We got- Yeah, yeah...
5:49
tapped our first beer here so far, so... And now this is our, our first night recording session, so we're getting ready to maybe be able to talk to people not only in Australia, 'cause it's Thursday morning where you at.
6:02
It's Wednesday night where we're at, but, uh, we're gonna be able to take calls. It's like time travel. Yeah, it's like a time warp. I'm completely freaked out. I wanna look forward to Thursday.
6:11
What do I have to look forward to, Wayne? [laughs] Tell us what it's like in the future, Wayne. [laughs]It's great in the future here, man. It's great. [laughs] That's good to hear. Good to hear.
6:23
What's the weather like in the future there? I, I'm just looking out the window.
6:27
It's, it's overcast, but it is Australia, so it's perpetually sunny, and there are wo- women walking past the building in bikinis right now. Oh, it sounds lovely. So
6:38
speaking of bikinis and being the godfather, I introduced you as the godfather of fat biking in Australia. Can you, uh, can you tell us why I, I live under this, uh, this thought process?
6:52
Well, back in, um, gee, I think it was 2004, 2005, uh, the company I own bought, uh, one of the first fat bikes ever into Australia, or the first fat bike ever, which was the original purple Surly Pugsley. Nice.
7:07
And, uh, you know, we sort of champion the cause for many years there, uh, trying to get people to ride the bikes. And, um, you know, since then we've sort of kept, kept growing it from there.
7:17
We, uh, we no longer work with the guys at Cube, but, uh, we've developed our own brands and gone on and upward. So what, uh, what brands do you, uh, work with or represent there?
7:29
Uh, we actually building our own in-house brands now. Uh, we decided that, uh, it's one thing to sell someone else's bike and it's another thing to, to, uh, design one of your own for Australian conditions.
7:41
So, uh, we sat down with, uh, some contacts we had in Taiwan and we, we went to work on designing our own bikes. So, uh, the, the first brand that came to market, uh, of those was, uh, Salted Bikes.
7:54
Uh, we, uh, we were one of the first sellers of the, the fork of many names. [laughs] The, um- As, as it is so friendly m- uh, so well known on, uh, on MTBR.
8:04
[laughs] Um, you know, we, we sold it because there was no fork at all available at the time. Right. It was the only thing out there. And so, uh, then I wanted to ride them myself, so we bought some and, and I rode them.
8:15
Uh, our second product was the, uh, the Sandfly Carbon fat bike, and, uh, that's been really well received. It's, uh, sold out twice now, and we've got a new shipment coming in, uh, in a new color known as Malibu Stacy.
8:28
Oh. [laughs] Malibu Stacy. Good name. Well- Is it, is it pink? [laughs] No, it's, um, like a, sort of like a, a, a pearlescent cream color. Um- Oh...
8:40
with the graphics it looks like a, a 1960s, uh, you know, Malibu surfboard. Oh. We did spell Stacy with an I so that, uh, Fox wouldn't sue us. [laughs] Oh. I was thinking of the pink parts of Stacy.
8:52
[laughs] I'm just a filthy man. Yeah, no, there's, there, there's no pink parts on that board. [laughs] Damn it.
8:59
So, uh, Wayne, you'd mentioned when you, uh, when you said you made the transition from the Pug into doing your own thing, that you were designing bikes for Australian conditions. Is there...
9:09
Are there specific conditions that you guys, uh, encounter that are a little bit different than other places? I, I wouldn't say it's, it's dramatically different to what, say, the southern half of the US is like.
9:21
Um, it's just that predominantly fat bikes, you know, go back three, four years, uh, majority of fat bikes were being designed around snow. It's as simple as that. Right.
9:31
I mean, the bike was, you know, developed for that originally.
9:35
Um, you know, your Fatbacks, your 07s, your Surlys, uh, everything was pretty much designed first and foremost to give you the best performance in a snow environment, and they also happen to be a lot of fun to ride on hard pack.
9:49
Well, we kind of ride along for snow. Um- [laughs] We, we do get a couple of inches of snow every year, uh, in one or two places- Sure... that are really high, that no one goes to. [laughs] Uh,
10:00
but we do have a lot of sand and a lot of trails and a lot of deserts. So, uh, you know, we just kind of worked on, on making the bikes work better for those conditions.
10:09
And, you know, more, more than most that really meant, uh, you know, basically short- lengthening the front end ever so slightly, um, yeah, dropping the bottom bracket a touch, just to make it ride more like a regular mountain bike.
10:21
Sure. Well, that's a very popular trend to this day in fat bikes, that's for sure. Even in the, in the US now, uh, companies are coming around to the Aussie way of thinking. Yeah.
10:32
Yeah, we ride- As, as always, as you know, we're, we're in front of you in the time travel way. [laughs] And it just seems that we're in front of you in a, uh, frame development way as well. [laughs] Very good.
10:42
[laughs] So I know that, uh, that you are heavily involved with the Simpson Desert Challenge as well. Um, I was sur-
10:52
Um- I was surprised to see- Yeah, I've, I've been interested in that since 1988 when I first read about it when I was, uh, working in, uh, in retail, in bike stores.
11:01
And, uh, someone sent us some posters to put up in the window. Mm-hmm. And, uh, I read about the event and thought, "That's, that's fantastic. What kind of idiot would ever do such a thing?"
11:09
[laughs] So come 2006, 2007, sorry, I was, uh, at home, uh, over Christmas. Uh, it was late. It, there may have been whiskey involved.
11:21
[laughs] And the next thing I knew, I pulled a credit card out and signed up for the race. Oh my. And, uh, 2008 was my first year out there and, uh, I learned a lot of valuable lessons.
11:31
One of which was, "Take a fat bike, you idiot." [laughs] Ah. Lots of sand on those tracks? It's, uh, it's considerably sandy, yeah. Some of the dunes get up to, uh, you know, around 70 meters in height.
11:44
Uh, I'll let you translate that to, uh, to Imperial- 210 feet... for the American listeners. Mm-hmm. Yes. [laughs] As I'm incapable of it. But, uh, yeah, look, it's just, it's just a lot of sand. It's a desert.
11:55
Um, any Google search will show you a lot of photos of the desert.
11:58
If you go to the website, which is desertchallenge.org, as it's a charity event, uh, there's thousands of photos going back, right back to 1988 of, of the event.
12:09
Uh, in more recent years, in the last 10 years, the course has got a great deal more sandy. And, um, I think that's because in, in earlier years they used to actually...
12:19
There's, um, a lot of mining going on out there, um, uh, gas mining. And they used to take trucks through and actually cap a lot of the dunes with, uh, hard clay- Mm-hmm...
12:28
which meant you could ride a standard mountain bike. There's even video footage somewhere of a couple on a tandem riding out there. Hmm. Uh, that's changed.
12:35
[laughs] That clay is long gone, and the tops of those dunes are well soft. Yeah. Sounds like perfect fat bike conditions. Exactly. It is perfect fat bike conditions, yeah.
12:46
My first year I took a full suspension carbon, you know, cool high-end bike. Um, and I put 2.5 inch tires on it, and we were running them at, uh, I think somewhere around 18 PSI.
13:00
Uh, and then the next year I thought, "Well, I know what'll make me do better. I'll put, I'll put even more carbon on the bike."
13:07
So I added a carbon fork and carbon cranks, 'cause the more carbon you add obviously will make you go better. [laughs] And, uh, the third year I, I gave in and took a Pugsley, and boy did I learn a lesson. [laughs] Yeah.
13:18
That heavy bike pedals really easy when you get the flotation. It's amazing. There, there is a big difference between, uh, between walking and riding. Yeah, absolutely. [laughs] Pushing carbon or riding steel.
13:31
Yeah, yeah. [laughs] Yeah. Yeah, it's, it's fun to push carbon, but it's a lot more fun to ride steel. Uh, and you know, I, I didn't... I wasn't silly. I, when I took the Pugsley out I, I did add some weight saving.
13:44
I put a carbon, uh, carbon shout front hub in there, try and save some weight. [laughs] I'm sure that helped tremendously. [laughs] If not, it looked cool at least. So- It looked cool...
13:55
my friend, uh, down in New Zealand, Antoine... Little shout out to Antoine in New Zealand. Hello, Ant. The, uh, he says that in New Zealand fat bikes are just as rare as diamonds. No one ever has seen one.
14:12
Is it the same in Australia, and is it, uh, becoming more popular? It's, uh, it's becoming more common. Uh, we, we started a, a Facebook page here, Fat Bikes Down Under, uh, which you can look up on Facebook. Mm-hmm.
14:26
And it's got a pretty heavy population of, of all the die hard originals, uh, who used to, you know, hunt out catalogs and know the secret handshake when it comes to buying a tire. Sure.
14:37
Uh, and now it's got all the, all the new guys, the, the new riders who have gone into the local store and seen a specialized, or a Norco, or a Kona, or a Trek or whatever, and they're just buying them off the shelf now.
14:48
And, uh, it, it's interesting. You guys understand what I mean. Like- Yeah... when you built your first Pugsley, um, you, you had to know [laughs] a lot about wheel building- Oh, yeah...
14:59
about, uh, bottom bracket widths, about getting the parts to work. And I think it's pretty cool that nowadays you can walk into a store and buy a bike off the shelf.
15:07
Uh, I'd like them to buy our bike off the shelf, but if they don't want to, that's cool, as long as they can learn to bike and ride it. Sure.
15:13
It used to be a jigsaw puzzle, and now you just buy the puzzle all glued together. Yep. So Wayne, what do you guys have planned down there for Global Fat Bike Day coming up on December 6th this year, right? Right. Yep.
15:27
No, 7th, sorry. Is it the 7th? No, 6th. 6th. 6th. Well, in, in Australia there's a few big meetings getting together.
15:32
Uh, the, uh, the guys up in, up in Brisbane, up in Queensland, uh, I believe are planning a big ride out on Moreton Island, um- Oh, nice... where you can get a ferry across to the island.
15:43
Uh, you spend all day riding and drinking beer, and then at the end of the day you get back off the ferry on the mainland and you may or may not drink some more beer- [laughs]...
15:51
uh, depending how far you've got to ride home. Sure. I know the Adelaide crew, uh, Jason and Bill and all the boys down there, have got a big ride planned down there.
15:59
They had a, a fantastic ride last year with about 14, 15 people.
16:03
Considering the amount of bikes that have been, uh, made available in Australia in, uh, in the last 12 months, I think they're gonna double or triple that quite easily.
16:12
You know, there, there's some really good scenes going on in here, some core type scenes where, where guys are getting together all the time. Um, and they're mainly hitting the beaches.
16:20
We had a, we had a couple of stories from one of your guys on that Moreton Island. That looks fantastic over there. Oh, yeah, Troy's, Troy's stories about Moreton Island- Troy, that's right... are the stuff of legend.
16:30
Right. Yeah, beautiful stuff. Well, Wayne, we really appreciate you coming on the show. No worries. Did we miss anything you want to talk about? Um, well- Your new, your new puppy perhaps? [laughs] With, um...
16:42
I'm gonna do some product plugs. Sure.
16:44
You know, we've, uh, at, at Dirtworks, which is a company I've been, uh, you know, running for 20 years now with my business partner, we, uh, you know, we, we just sorted, which is our carbon and alloy fat bike brand.
16:56
From that we have, uh, we have some dual suspension, uh, samples arriving in about three weeks time- Wow... uh, which we'll be taking out and playing with and trashing them to within an inch of their lives. Nice.
17:06
Uh, we have some alloy samples on that one as well, which we're, well, actually an alloy sample here we've been riding for the past couple of months. Uh, it's known as the Popcorn. It's a 19712 rear. Nice.
17:17
Uh, clearance for Alu. It's, uh, it's a blast to ride. It's designed around a 120 mil grapple fork on the front. We want it to be a, a trail bike more than a, uh, more than a beach bike. Mm-hmm.
17:29
And, um, as an aside to that, one of the other brands that we're starting up with, with Dirtworks with a brand called Wayward Bicycle Company, and it predominantly does touring bikes. Mm-hmm.
17:40
And, uh, one of the touring bikes, which we've, uh, just pressed the button on the go forward, is a, uh, a chromoly steel, ED coated 197 rear end, drop bar off-road adventure tourer. Oh. That sounds pretty sweet.
17:55
Sounds great. Send us, send us pictures and stories. The only aim was just to confuse the hell out of people. Yeah. We'd love to, love to see them and feature them on the site. Well, very cool. Yeah.
18:04
Appreciate you coming on. Yeah. And, uh, keep it real out in the future. Let us know if anything bad happens. [laughs] Thanks for being on the show, Wayne. We'll, we'll, we'll let you know.
18:14
If the world ends or something I'll make sure I send you guys an email first. That'd be good, or a postcard. [laughs] Just in case the rapture actually comes a couple of years late, you know. [laughs] Indeed.
18:25
All right, my man. Have a good one. Yep. Talk to you again, mate. All right, mate. Great to talk to you. Bye. [whistles] This is your weekly dose of fat. Welcome back to the radio program.
18:41
Hey, for the third consecutive year, uh, fatbike.com is gonna be sponsoring the Global Fatbike Summit. Been exchanging emails with those guys, and, um, we're gonna have someone out there, probably me, looks like. Yeah?
18:55
Looks like it's gonna be you. Looks like, [laughs] looks like it's gonna be me going out to the Global Fatbike Summit, so.
18:59
Since you kind of, since the, since you, you, since it came out, the news, you're like, "Oh, Jackson Hole, I hate that place." I, I, oh, darn. Wait a second. I, I'm, I'm, our third cousin lives there.
19:08
Is, is that where it is? Dude, I'm going. [laughs] Is that- So- Is it in Jackson Hole? I have no idea. [laughs] Yeah. Yeah, so I'll be going to that thing.
19:16
Um, we're getting our video chops together and should have some, uh, interviews from out there.
19:22
Uh, if anybody's got anything they're interested in hearing about, send me something at
[email protected]
and maybe we can, uh, throw some questions at some people at the summit. You know what I'd like to hear about?
19:33
I, because we have these trails we're building for single track grooming, um- It's almost like your own private trail out there It is not. [laughs] It's on public land- That's true...
19:41
and there's a bunch of other people that are helping and, you know. So it used to be your own private trail out there. Well, yeah. [laughs] Now it's getting crowded, actually.
19:49
People are coming and riding it, which is cool. It's a great place. When you have the, uh, the event, the enduro out there, that's a great place to ride. Absolutely. It's very fat bike friendly.
19:56
It's gonna get so much better, dude. The trail is getting built out there. It, it, it's good now. I, I'm just amazed every time I go out there. So the thing that I would like to see is single track grooming.
20:08
That's, that's what I'm interested in, and I know the groomer. Our county has said, "We're gonna buy this groomer," but- Are you gonna go with the one from the guys up in, uh- Yeah. Yeah, yeah... Black River Falls?
20:18
Right. Exactly. Yeah. So they, they have purchased that, and it's, they're gonna pick it up and- Is that, I think George picked up one of those.
20:24
There's several people have picked them up because they're very- Well, I think they use, that's what they use, that's what Steve Miret uses at Levis Trail. Right, right. So I'm more interested in tow vehicles.
20:33
There's all kinds of tracked vehicles- Uh-huh... electric, et cetera, from crazy almost science fiction looking stuff- [laughs]... to something that actually looks like it could possibly work.
20:46
So we need maneuverability 'cause we build single track to be, you know- For the to- for the, instead of using a snowmobile? [coughs] Right. A, a small snowmobile? Correct.
20:56
Like a lot of, like a kids- Or using a two-wheel drive mini bike kinda thing, so. Yeah. Well, the Roc Hunt's got some pretty good reviews. But anyway, that will be part of the summit.
21:04
It's gonna be land managers and, you know, park people and BLM people and just a bunch of, um, decision makers on public land use.
21:15
Plus it's gonna be a lot of resorts and stuff talking about how they're integrating Nordic trails, and there's a specifically a, uh, a seminar on trail grooming. They're gonna actually groom some trail right there.
21:26
Oh, very cool. Um, in addition to having a bunch of groomed Nordic for people to ride while they're there. And, um, you know, it's, it, it's a Global Fatbike Summit, and it's, it's a Q brand, a production essentially.
21:38
Mm-hmm.
21:39
And in the past it's basically been focused on their brands, but Gary made it pretty clear to me with, say, telling me Trek is coming, that they, this is a big, big tent for everybody to come and play in that's in the fat bike space.
21:51
So- Yeah. So if you're out there, if you, if we have people in the industry that listen to the show, you know, if you're, if you're in- Hey, Len... heart of- [laughs]... the fat bike market segment, go to this event.
22:03
It's a quality event. It's very proactive.
22:07
Um, and one of the other things that I wanted to bring up was one of the other things that I'm really interested in hearing about is how keystone locations like Yellowstone National Park, how that is going, how the negotiations are going for getting fat bikes to ride on the roads that are covered with snow.
22:28
So, uh, that's what they allow the snowmobiles to do. Right. Yeah. Um- Well, they didn't used to allow them either, and then they allowed them, so maybe, you know. I mean, that's what this whole thing is about.
22:38
It's- Sure... it's, I mean, over the... This is the fourth one, so they've been exposing people in these very positions of authority- Mm-hmm... that can make these rules that we have to live by in some of these spots.
22:49
This isn't new to them anymore really. It's more about a, you know, now it's more about an implementation, I think, of, of how to coexist. And this is a very good thing.
22:58
This is, this is the industry being proactive and making sure that we have a place to ride these beautiful toys we all love. [laughs] So [laughs] Not just on your mom, huh? [laughs] Yeah.
23:15
So, hey, speaking of my mom- [laughs]... we now record the shows on Wednesday evenings, so we're no longer [laughs] getting, you know, morning drunk and- [laughs]... you know, sleeping it off in a cardboard box.
23:30
We're here on Wednesday evenings, so we're thinking about do you guys wanna be able to call in and talk to us? So- You know what I'd call in and say? What'd you say?
23:42
[laughs] I just wanted to remind everybody that if they're interested in that Fatbike Summit, that they should just go to Fatbike. So, hey, uh- [laughs]... hey, guys.
23:50
Hey, could you go ahead and mention, uh, fatbikesummit.com so if you got any questions about that Global Fatbike Summit, you know where to go? See, that would be like a perfect call-in right there. Right?
23:59
And you know what you get- Can I-... when you call in? [laughs] Because we have sponsors for the show that give us, like, schwags. Surly just sent me, like, two huge boxes of schwag to give to our listeners, okay?
24:10
Yeah, they're pretty good that way. Yeah. So, you know, call in. I promise I'll try to be nice. [laughs] And- Will, will you at least talk dirty? Well, um- Damn it. Talk dirty to me.
24:24
[singing] There's multiple, it's layers. It's not black or white. There's subtle s- variations. All right. I feel like we're getting off track a little bit. I need that beer pitcher.
24:32
[laughs] And now, and now the beer stop. Cha-ching. Pulling into the beer stop.
24:38
So, uh, you know, this is just like when you're on your bike and you pull over, and then- Somebody cracks open a beer, and then the next guy comes and he's like, "Oh, can I have a hit off of that?"
24:47
And then the next guy comes and he's got three beers, and then the rest of the group comes- Yeah, buddy, that's my friend right there. There's always a Brit. [laughs] So this is like that. Yeah. But we got a pitcher.
24:56
You know, it's a kind of a nice crystal pitcher here for- [laughs]... for our industrial- I got that over at Goodwill... studio. Very nice. That was in some... That was somebody's grandmother's probably. Cheers, boys.
25:06
Very nice. Cheers. And- Beers. Ooh. So the next segment is the, uh, the linkage. We got linkage. Well, we're in the linkage.
25:18
You know, I think, uh, I think it's pretty indicative of interest when links, we keep getting more and more every week now. It's not like there's, like, just a couple out there trickling in, so,
25:27
um, that's- We're starting to hit the thick season here, kids... starting to get right into it. People are getting interested. I had... You had somebody, a friend of yours, say he was gonna get something.
25:33
My buddy called me and said, uh, he wanted to do something for his wife for Christmas. Oh, yeah. I can't say his name, otherwise she'd know. She probably listens to the show. Don't do it.
25:43
[laughs] Don't spoil the surprise. So, uh, one of our readers contacted us and asked, "Hey, I'm new to fat biking. I don't ride bikes in the wintertime. What do I wear?"
25:53
And, uh, I kind of went back in my memory banks, and every fall I kind of go back to this link that is in my gazillion links in my, uh, in my browser, but I found it.
26:06
It is a, from Civia Cycles, and it tells you wet or dry every 10 degrees what you should wear, and it's pretty good. Yeah. I'd, I'd never seen it before. Yeah.
26:15
I saw the link and I looked at it and I went, "That's pretty smart." [laughs] So I go back to this, I refresh my memory because, you know- You- It's that time of year where everything just kind of goes short- Right...
26:26
circuits going, "Oh, what?" And we can have 30, 40 or 50 degree days now. Exactly. Or 60 degree days, and- My friend is- The 60 degrees I always remember, but for- 30, 40, 50- But morning to, morning to afternoon.
26:37
[coughs] Well, my friend this time of year as well, for sure, personally. Yeah. I like, like, layers of thin wool because I can regulate that pretty easily. Yeah, that's for sure. That's what I'm saysing.
26:47
Zas the Las says- What else we got on these links here?
26:51
Awardo sent us, uh, some cool stuff from Oregon Dunes, and, uh, I just heard that there's gonna be, uh, s- a big ladies group going to Oregon Dunes on a bunch of fat back bicycles that we'll be, uh, we'll be getting some snapshots- That would be pretty sweet...
27:06
of ladies on fat bikes. Oregon Dunes sounds awesome. Imagine, huh? I'll be out there someday. Oregon- I don't know when... didn't they just legalize something? That was Washington, DC and Alaska.
27:14
Alaska, weed was legal- Oregon did, Oregon did make it-... and then they re-legalized it- Oh, really?... and then they made it legal again. They're very fickle over there about weed. [laughs] This is- [laughs]
27:24
Something- Noth- nothing on, nothing you hear on fatbike.com should be construed as legal advice. [laughs] But f- consult your own local marijuana laws before- I-... before making your choices.
27:37
[laughs] What does he mean? I absolve myself of all of this. [laughs] You made me watch this guy- [laughs]... from- Wow... from Ontario that does this performance thing. Yeah, it's like a spoken word thing.
27:51
It d- it gets going in some spots. It's pretty funny. I don't know. Probably not everybody's cup of tea, and I might just listen to it rather than watch it, 'cause it's really, you know... I think it's...
28:00
[laughs] I listened to it twice already 'cause I thought it was brilliant. [laughs] And- So, so- It was somewhat like fingernails on a chalkboard for me. [laughs] Yeah, yeah. [laughs] Like molars are grinding.
28:12
Oh, God, I can't watch anymore. [laughs] Can't... Where's your... But it is, he does get going on some stuff. It's pretty funny. Um, what else we got on here? Oh, you wanted to talk about the, uh- Uh-...
28:24
Short's Brewing Fat Bike Series. Yeah, just the, uh, the Northern Michigan Fat Bike Series has been renamed Short's Brewing Fat Bike Series, and they have a new website. Oddly enough, it's shortsbrewingfatbikeseries.com.
28:37
Yay, beer. Yeah. Beer. Eh? Oh, I- Short's, we've had their beer before. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's good stuff. Yeah. Remember that golf course race that Lungs and I- Yeah, that was-... put together?
28:48
That was, um, uh, that was, uh, Gaylord, Michigan. Gaylord, Michigan. 10-4. Hey, uh, I noticed, uh, too, Bruce is selling his Pugsley.
28:58
The first Pugsley in Scotland is being sold for £650 with new tires and nice rims and- Dude, man, that... This should go into a museum. Really. Surly ought to buy it for twice that. Yeah. I would agree. Or somebody.
29:10
Tyler, buy that bike- [laughs]... and let's put it in a glass case somewhere. Yeah. In, like- In the history of fat biking. [laughs] In the Hard Fat Cafe- [laughs]... in Vegas, baby.
29:24
You know, there should be a fat bike bar in Vegas. Think so? I think there should be a fat bike bar in Anchorage or, or Fairbanks. Or Lake Michigan, right down on the beach there. Manitowoc. There you go.
29:36
We could have mini bowling too. [laughs] Man- Manit- Yeah. Manbowling. Manitowoc and Quivers. Manbowling and Dollar Ham's Lights on Tuesdays.
29:44
For, um, Global Fat Bike Day, I'm going up there and staying with George again. Oh, yeah? Global Fat Bike Day, I think I'm gonna go to Kettle and I'm gonna hunt fat bikers. Nice. [laughs] With a crossbow. Oh, yeah.
29:59
[laughs] 'Tis the season. Just kidding, kids. 'Tis the season. Just kidding. I'm gonna go up there and ride my fat bike with a bunch of my homies from Ilnoise. Yeah, they come and invade Wisconsin. Yeah.
30:08
Wear orange, folks. Uh, I think that kind of about does it. Yeah, we don't have a guest for next week, but we're gonna figure it out. We're thinking Haile Selassie or, uh, or Margaret Thatcher maybe.
30:21
[laughs] Haile Selassie? [laughs] I don't know. What do you think, Sven? Don't know. Nobody knows. Adios, amigos. Thanks again to Surly for sponsoring the radio portion of today's broadcast.
