Weekly Dose of Fat, show number 38 for Friday, January 7th, 2015.
0:08
[upbeat music] Live from the River West Coven of Evil, it's the Weekly Dose of Fat with your hosts Sven and Gomez.
0:29
[upbeat music] Feliz año nuevos. Yo soy tio Gomez. And this is Sven. Our happy holiday hiatus is all over now. We're back live in your ear hole, and thank all that's holy, or maybe not.
0:46
[laughs] Joining us in the studio today is Mr. JK Levin. This show is sponsored by the Surly Waxed Canvas Coat.
0:52
Top fashion magazines call Surly's waxed cotton coat the exclamation point and the pure lumbersexual couture. Couture. Couture. Couture. [laughs] Learn more at surlybikes.com. Couture. Couture. Couture.
1:09
[laughs] So what, what do we have on this couture show today, JK? Well, on this week's show, well, we eclipsed the 17,000 likes plateau on the Facebook. Them damn Facebook people like the shit out of us, don't they?
1:25
[laughs] Ah, thou be praised. [laughs] We have gnomes in our pants. Always. Mm-hmm. Gomez is taking casting calls for dancers for his new musical, Snow Dance. [whistles] Dong.
1:40
[laughs] Got two contests, plus, you know, beer. [upbeat music] You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio. Hey, this is Travis Brown. Do you hear that?
1:54
That's your bike calling you, so turn off these chodos and go ride your bike. So we're three minutes into the show. Should we, uh, stop at the top of the next hill and have a beer? [laughs] Yeah. [laughs] I'm, I'm, uh...
2:05
But, uh, yeah, beer stop. Beer stop. And I had picked up the Sierra Nevada Torpedo Extra IPA. Extra IPA. Ex- Yes. So there was a- It's a-... there was an economic reason to choose- Well, yeah...
2:19
this beer as well, I take it. I just saw this huge tower of, [can cracks] of four-packs of the tall boy cans of this. 16-ounce cans these come in. Yeah. Yeah. And I was just fascinated by it.
2:30
I've had this beer before, and I've... You know, it's... I like IPAs, so, you know, this is a good, steady- Steady Eddie... tasty, tasty. But yeah, it was, like, five bucks for a four-pack at- At Whole Paycheck...
2:41
at Whole Paycheck- [laughs]... of all places. [laughs] I was just fascinated by, like, s- 'cause it's a nice green-colored can. So yeah, it's a, it's a, it's a pretty can.
2:48
Yeah, it's a very- But what's up with the torpedo? It's like, death from below? [laughs] Death from under. Is it- Or from inda. Is it brewed on a U-boat? [laughs] It's, uh, 7.2 ABV. Oh, yeah.
3:02
So it does pack- All right... a little bit of a punch. Cheers, lads And it gets a 93. Oh. Oh. It smells good. Oh. 90- A 93? A 93. A 93. Which would be- Looking at the old, uh-... considered outstanding- Outstanding...
3:15
by the Beer Advocate. By the Beer Advocate. And that's from 9,200- We clinked our glass... people. We c- [laughs] Oh, 9,200? That hit the buttons to say, "We like it. We like it." [laughs] The click farmers from where?
3:27
[laughs] Yeah, right. [laughs] Oh, it's good. Los clique farmers. It's very good. Yeah. Um, I could see, uh, why you would drink this regularly. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, that's a, that's a tasty mustache wa- wash for sure.
3:39
Mm-hmm. Yeah, and I'm just a big fan of [can cracks] cans. [laughs] I keep going back to cans. [laughs] Cans are good. Cans are good for carrying on your bicycle. That's what I'm saying. I like big cans. I cannot lie.
3:50
When I sit under a bridge, I don't know what else to say. [laughs] With a piece of pie. Oh, there you go. [laughs] There's always- Wow, maybe you should go into business writing songs for people [laughs] Bad ones.
4:04
So, uh, anything else we want to say about this? This isn't really a super citrus-y one. I'm not getting any apricots. [laughs] No, there's no apricots. [laughs] The feed, and- Yeah.
4:14
[laughs] The, the, the, the behind-the-back feed and the dunk It seems like it has the color o- of- It's a l- It's a good color... yeah, of-... a caramil- caramel color. [laughs] Of the skin of an apricot.
4:25
[laughs] But not caramel-tastingness. So what makes it- Yeah, I would only... I can only, like, relegate myself to one or two of these if I'm- With that 7.2, man-... flying, yeah...
4:33
I'll tell you what, you're drinking this all day long. It's slightly- It's not a, it's not a session... piney. Yeah. I'm always wrong, though. I just like... [laughs] See, she- uh, listeners at home, just-
4:44
What's the opposite of piney? What's the opposite of piney? [laughs] Herpy. That's what it really is. Derpy. Yeah. Elma. Rooty. [laughs] Rooty. Piney, Rooty. Your tongue was tragically killed- [laughs]...
4:56
in the 1977 snow of 1979. That was a long time ago. Exactly. So I think that we're gonna be right back with the Weekly Dose of Fat.
5:11
You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio. The beards have spoken. Feel rugged and look smooth with Wild Man Beard Conditioner. Tame that shaggy goat with beard products from The Wild Man. Do you have a face?
5:28
Is there a wool plaid shirt jack hanging in your mud room? You need to visit wildroseherbs.com. Hey, this is George Coppetts from Built-In Spoke Bike Studio.
5:39
When I'm not riding the bike or in the shop, I'm listening to Fat Bike Radio. [whistles] This is your weekly dose of fat.
5:49
Well, before we jump right into the Weekly Dose of Fat, I just thought I'd share some news with our listeners that your, uh- Your buddy Greg over there at, uh, fatbike.com, he got hisself all- AKA Sven.
6:01
[laughs] Yeah, yeah, yeah. Whoops. Well, he was Greg when he was talking to the journalist. Oh, oh. [laughs] Yeah, so you're, you're yourself. So your mom can clip it out- Right... at the right time.
6:10
Otherwise she'd be like, "Who's Sven? You look like my son, but who's Sven?" [laughs] So, um- "Look, honey, I found a article about a guy named Sven that looks just like you." [laughs] It's my doppelganger, Sven, my guy.
6:20
And you know, the mainstream media always jumps on after the first snow, which we basically had just a couple days ago, really, the first s- stroke of winter. They just get all, like, "What's with them fat bikes anyway?"
6:34
Yeah. So we get the call. I know they've called you before, but have you ever been, you know, like, published and stuff?
6:40
[laughs] I, I usually give them such a hard time and give them such, you know, celestial answers that- [laughs] That, that they- Like, "What is, what was that guy smoking that day?"
6:51
[laughs] They think, they think, "Oh, wrong number." [laughs] I'm trying to pick this shit out of Pepper. [laughs] But, uh, you know, that's the print media. They're in Milwaukee calling us up.
7:05
We, we get calls all the time. Washington Post. We've actually been in The New York Times. New York Times. I was in The Times. The New York Times three years ago. Yeah. So. Yeah.
7:16
You know, mainstream media is- It's the same story. Fat bikes are cool. Google, man. You know, people don't get the information about what they wanna learn about from the newspaper. It sucks.
7:27
Does the Google tell you it's cool? [laughs] Google will take you to places that will tell you whether it's cool or not. [laughs] And you make the call. That's right. You make the call. So
7:41
did you wanna, did you wanna weigh in there, JK? No, I just, I, every time it's, uh... I, I always worry about the portrayal of, of- Portrayal... yeah, of, of bi- I mean, fat biking- Of our user group? Yeah. Well, yeah.
7:55
And because sometimes it can be just a little too cutesy, da-da-da-da, human interest story. At least the, the, the, the mainstream media- They don't hang out under bridges with us. Yeah. [laughs] True.
8:04
That's where you get the true taste. There's always a bridge. Indeed. [laughs] And now here's Sven with that Samsquatch jern-t. Jern-t. [laughs] Samsquatch. Samsquatch.
8:16
So, you know, 2014 was kind of a banner year for fat bikes. They kinda hit the big time sorta.
8:22
All the major bike manufacturers jumped on the fat train, and with so many choices out there, it seems like we hear this one a lot. JK? This week's question is, what is your choice for best fat bike of 2014?
8:35
It's about time that we had a fat bike pageant, right? [laughs] So, uh, this is where we're gonna actually put it out to our listeners. We have this new call-in feature where- It's technology...
8:49
yeah, where we have a switchboard and everything, but it's all on our Lappy 2000 here. But first, before we talk to our guests, we're going to find out what Sven has up, uh, up his sleeve for the, uh, for the year.
9:03
For my favorite, bestest fat bike? Yeah. My bestie? Bestie. [laughs] My bestie was giving me a restie. [laughs] [laughs] Okay. You. Uh, my best fat bike of the year, I think it's, it's gotta be the Salsa Blackborow.
9:18
I've ridden a bunch of fat bikes.
9:19
I certainly haven't ridden every one that's out there anymore, 'cause there's so many, but this is a five-inch platform bike that they kinda aim at the adventure crowd, but it turns out, to me anyway, that it's a really fun trail bike.
9:32
It's got a really short chain stay, and it seems to be pretty playful. And then on the beach, it, it, it mows through pretty much on its own without a lot of input from you, if you don't wanna tell it where to go.
9:44
And I know from my ride at Snowbasin when I first got on it at Saddle Drive to having the one in here for the last month or so, it's the one I've been liking the most. Cool. And it has a really short chain stay.
9:55
Yeah, short. 440, right? Yeah. 440 millimeters. Yeah, at the forward position. It's got an alternator drop, so you can actually, which I didn't try on our last beach ride- Mm-hmm...
10:04
is swing it back and give you a little longer wheel base. You can get, I believe, 17 millimeters more- Hmm... uh, wheel base.
10:11
Maybe that's where you're running it in the trail position, and maybe when you load it with bags- Yep, move it back a little bit... you give yourself a little bit more of a longer wheel base.
10:21
'Cause that's the way their marketing is going, is they're showing it as that adventure bike. Mm-hmm. They also have that Dingle Speed version- Mm-hmm... which has, uh, two different single speed drive ratios.
10:31
And, you know, that helps tension the chain for that thing too. With the cool Forest Service truck kinda paint job on that thing. Yep, yep. Yeah, so, uh, yeah, we'll keep riding it, but that's my 2014 bike of the year.
10:42
Well, very cool. Well, now we're going to, uh, we're gonna take some calls, so stand by for that. Calls from the audience. You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio. All right. Who do we have on the line? Ernesto.
11:00
How you doing? Still me. Ernesto, what's happening, brother? Oh, nothing. Just, uh, uh, wearing my, uh, my cutoff shorts, my dickie shorts as I clean the backyard of my, uh, house here. [laughs] Very nice.
11:15
So, uh, what's your vote for the best fat bike of 2014? The best fat bike? Uh, to be honest with you, I think my vote, because I own one, is, uh, the Surly Moonlander. Surly Moonlander.
11:33
I know that you ride my old Moonlander- The best bike... named Sparkle. Yeah. It's a tight- Yeah, Sparkle is the best bike... incestuous fat bike family we have here.
11:41
If, if, if you have issues with a mob or there's gonna be an apocalypse and you have several bicycles, the only one you should take out of the garage before the apocalypse begins is, uh, the Moonlander.
11:53
It's a pretty strong frame, uh, Surly steel, uh- Amazing wheels. Uh, although the weight is, uh, something that you have to get accustomed to.
12:05
But other than that, I think the Moonlander is, uh, one of the best bikes out there. Well, all right my brother. Yeah. [laughs] We have calls stacked up- So, so yeah... like cordwood.
12:13
You, you take care and, uh, thanks for shopping at fatbike.com. Adios, amigo. Thank you, sir. You're welcome. Bye bye. All right, welcome to the show. Who do we got on the line? Uh, Dino, dude.
12:28
Chris, how's it going, man? How are you? I'm- Good, how are you? I'm doing awesome. So tell me, uh, tell me your choice for the fat bike of the year 2014. Well, you know, I don't know if...
12:42
[laughs] I think I've had the most fun on in the past year, of course, the Moonlander.
12:49
Um, that's pretty much the only one I've ridden, if you wanna consider fat bikes, but the Surly Krampus is definitely my favorite bike of the year. 29 plus, it's not fat, but it's- It's a clump... it's a ripper.
13:02
It's clump enough. It, it's clump and forgiving. Sweet. Like the ladies. [laughs] Well, all right. Like the ladies. Well, thanks, Chris. So I think we have a delay between us. Oh, wait, we got somebody on the line.
13:16
What do you think about that, dude? All right. Well, you, you take it down to that other person and keep riding. All right. Take care, man. Thanks for calling. Crap. [laughs] Welcome to the show.
13:29
Who do we have on the line, and where are you from? Uh, it's Colin. Ha, I know this guy. From, uh [laughs] Romney, Denver, Colorado. Dude, it was like, it was like 60 degrees yesterday. [laughs] 20 degrees today.
13:44
Oh, wait. You have to, you have to say like- Man- "This is Colin from the Mile High City, where the weed's legal- The Mile High City... and the chicks are all blond" [laughs] Man, super high, Colorado. Yeah, you know.
14:01
Uh, we had some, we had some pretty good snow here the last, uh, week, but it's starting to melt now, so- That's cool... kinda bummed, but- So tell me, what is your vote for the best fat bike of 2014?
14:16
It's, uh, the bike that, uh, you know, is, it's the heavyweight champ, man. Ice Cream Truck. Woo. The greatest of the baddest. She, uh, you know, it's bulletproof. It's rock solid. I mean,
14:30
the Mad Cycle bike is super tight, but not everyone can have one of those, so- True... most people can get an Ice Cream Truck if they want it. Um- All right. I, you know, I should've known that.
14:41
I, I hadn't really thought about it, but- Well, I mean, uh [laughs] what's new in the Wisconsin? Uh, are you speaking English, or did you just switch to France or something? What did you... What?
14:55
[laughs] What's new in Wisconsin, man? How's, how is the fat biking out there? You guys got some snow now? We have snow. We have subarctic temperatures. We got... It's crazy here, man.
15:08
We'll have to talk off the, off the air, but I gotta actually, actually have another- Yeah, yeah... I actually have another call waiting, so my man, thanks for calling in. Holy crap. I will talk to you later.
15:19
Adios, amigos. Adios. Happy New Year. Happy New Year, man. Hey, welcome to the show. Who do I have on the line? Jesse Lalonde. Jesse Lalonde, oh, calling in to tell me- What did, what did I win? [laughs] Um,
15:36
you will be able to ride a bike even faster than, like, guys, fast guys like- What the... I'm sorry. I, uh- Fast, like, fast guys like Sven. You're gonna ride a lot faster than him.
15:49
[laughs] You're gonna g- I don't think, I don't think I've ever met Sven. No? Well, you're in for a treat. No, I, uh- Very s- But, uh... Yeah. [laughs] I, um- Doesn't he sound fast? I mean, Sven.
16:02
Sven, Sven, Sven sounds fast on skis. Yeah, there you go. Don't know about a fat bike. Yeah. So the purpose of the call is- Am I, am I on the air right now? Yeah. The... Well, yeah. Yeah. This is, this is the show.
16:16
Awesome. So we're gonna, we're gonna ask you- Let me get my game face on here... we're gonna ask you a loaded question, which is, what do you think is the best fat bike that came out in 2014? [laughs] Wait, what?
16:29
Come on, now. I know. You, you work- I, I am a- You work for Twin Six... I'm a little bit, little bit biased here. You designed- Little biased... the bike. Yeah. But it's okay to say. Yeah. No.
16:38
The, the, uh, T6 Standard Fat Bike. All right. For obvious reasons- Yeah... it is pretty badass. It is. So, uh, I mean- Yeah... what can we say? Well, that's, that's... We like to think that.
16:51
We'd like to, we would like to believe that. Um- Someday, you know, someday when you wanna hear your bike cry really hard, cry like a little baby, then you just let me borrow it for a little while.
17:01
Be like, "Get that fat kid off of me!" Yeah, yeah. [laughs] All right, Jess. Thanks for calling in, man. See you, man. I, uh... Yeah. All right, thanks. All right, peace out. See you. Bye. Hey, welcome to the show.
17:15
Who's on the line? Getting ready. How's it going, G? Hey. What's up, Andy? Andy's from Carol Stream. Not much. So my man- Oh...
17:25
fill us in on your choice for the winner of this beauty pageant, the best fat bike- Okay... of 2014. Okay. Like I said, I've done a couple on the road last, this past year. Um, all were pretty cool.
17:41
The Borealis sticks out as just a ripping, shredding, do-it-all bike. And the other one I'd really like to put up there, and I think is really killer, is the Ice Cream Truck. Like I said- Oh...
17:51
Surly kind of goes against the grain. Everyone's going race bike, and the Ice Cream Truck is, uh, opposite end of the spectrum, but the thing just brawls.
17:58
It's, uh- Go everywhere, do everything kind of bike, and it's, uh, what the fat bike started out being and they're staying true to their roots, so I would stick with the Ice Cream Truck.
18:09
Yeah, man, nothing wrong with a five-inch, 190 millimeter rear end brawler. Yep. Good choice. Yeah. And, and good choice on, on the Borealis too. I've got a light, yeah. I mean, I've got a light tied bike.
18:21
I got a 907 I ride and a couple other ones I've ridden, but if I were to go out and buy one right now and put money down, I'd probably buy an Ice Cream Truck. Yeah. Cool. You have that 907- It's like the best one...
18:31
with a boner stem on it, dude. What do you got, like, a, a 150 millimeter stem on there? That's my throwback 1980s style he's going on. [laughs] Sweet. Sweet deal, dude. Well, thanks for calling in.
18:45
Keep it real for the brotherhood. All right, man. We'll see ya. Will do. All right, bye. Hey, we have Tony Berge from Milwaukee, Wisconsin on the line. How's it going, Tony? I'm from River West, actually. Oh, yeah.
19:01
I'm fine, Gomez. How are you? River West, uh, is the renaissance zone of Milwaukee. Tony Berge. So, my brother, how are you? It's been a long time. I'm hanging in there. Yeah, yeah.
19:19
I was expecting to get a battery from you, but that's a whole nother story for a whole nother day. It's true. Sex toys later. Right now, the subject is, what's your favorite fat bike from 2014?
19:34
That would, uh, probably be the, uh, although I don't own one, the, uh, Schlick Cycles Ape Air South easy. Oh, Schlick Ape, man.
19:45
That's the, that is the, uh, probably the, the, the fat bike of River West, or at least that's the brand of N- River West, for all you Brew Town locals.
19:55
And, you know, also a shout-out for, you know, it's a shout-out to Tom Pete out there. Oh, yeah. True. RIP Tom. Well, Tony, we have to get together and have a beer, my brother. Yeah. We can do that.
20:07
I'll go have one right now. All right. Well, maybe after the show we'll, uh, ring you up on the other line- I'll stay tuned... and we'll, uh, lay some beers down. Let me know if you guys are going out. Sounds good, man.
20:19
Thanks for calling into the show. Peace out. Adios. Take it easy. Bye. Hey, we have the one and only Tupper Becker on the line. Welcome to the show, my brother. Oh, what up, gangster? How you doing? Well, you know,
20:35
living large. How about yourself? Yeah. I'm, uh, enjoying my, uh, Wednesday night bonfire. I'm surrounded with a bunch of gnarly dudes in Alaska wearing Carhartt jackets and we're all drinking beer around a big fire.
20:49
[laughs] Pretty good. Fantastic. How about you share your 2014 Fat Bike of the Year with us? I, I can do that. You guys might be shocked about this. So,
21:02
and the reason this one is my favorite is because it was kind of the first one on the market, um, for what I was looking for, and it's the Mongoose Massive, believe it or not. Oh, cool. Because,
21:15
you know, it's, it's, it's not, you know, obviously it's not something I ride, but it was the only thing I could find for my son. Um, and it was kind of the first kids version of the fat bike to come out.
21:24
So I'd say for the money, you know, for what it is, that's kinda my favorite. But, uh, if I had to pick for myself, I'd have to go with my Fatback Corvus, you know? Oh, yeah. Nothing wrong with that.
21:35
[laughs] Well, I cannot believe that you picked those two. That's, that's shocking. It's good, but kids bikes, man, kids bikes are huge. Yeah. Yeah. No, I, it's, it's,
21:47
you know, as soon as Salsa comes out with their, their kids fat bike I'll, I'll be picking one of those up for my kiddo, but, uh, right now I just got the Massive. [laughs] Wait, what?
21:55
Wait, did you just, did you just spill the beans on something? Oh, wait, was I... Oh, oh, wait, oh, I, I don't know what I'm talking about. Uh, don't listen to me.
22:03
Hey, Tupper Becker, ladies and gentlemen, from Becker Sewing and Precision, uh, uh, I don't know, what, precision bombing? Beer drinking. [laughs] Precision beer drinking. All right.
22:13
Well, we really appreciate you- Yeah... taking the time to call us, bro. We'll talk to you. Have a good one. All right, thanks, Gomez. Take care. All right. We have Michael from Chicago. Welcome to the show, my brother.
22:24
How you doing? I'm doing all right. So you wanna share your, uh, choice for the Fat Bike of the Year 2014?
22:34
Well, for me, it's the one I'm, I guess I'm a little biased on since I ride it, but, uh, I've been riding the 907 Whiteout- Oh, yeah...
22:43
since January of last year, so exactly one year anniversary for me right now on it, and it's been, uh, in my opinion, a, a phenomenal bike. I've ridden in pretty much every
22:56
configuration that I know of, um, rigid as well as the Bluto. Oh, yeah, you run a Bluto on it too. Yeah. Cool. Fantastic bike. Well, right on. I- Yeah, and I actually- I rode that bike for a week... built some, uh...
23:08
Yeah, I actually saw you guys, um, in Wisconsin, um, up in Kettle. Oh, cool. And that's when I actually first learned about the radio show, and I've been tuning in ever since. Well, right on. We really appreciate that.
23:23
Thanks for joining the show, and, uh, hey, that's a, it's a good choice. That, that Whiteout's a great bike, man. You got yours built up really, really light? Uh, now I think I remember you, bro. Right now I'm, uh...
23:38
Yeah. [laughs] Yeah. Um, I guess it was, it was Kettle, but, um- At Emma, right? It was during the... Right. All right. Yeah, I re- I remember. Yeah, at the 12-Hour. Exactly, yes. Oh, cool. Well, sweet.
23:54
I know the bike you're talking about. Well, thanks for joining the show. We're gonna take the next caller. Great. Thanks for listening, man. All right. Thanks, guys. All right, take care. Anytime. Take care.
24:05
Hey, ladies and gentlemen. We have the Spinner Ryerson. Welcome to the show, bro. Woo-woo. [laughs] Yeah. Thanks. So- I was on your, uh, holding team, and you said, "Hey, Jesse." And I was like, "He never calls me that."
24:20
And then Jesse Rolon started speaking and I was like, "Oh." Ah, that's funny. Uh-huh. [laughs] So my man, what is your... Uh, this is a little, we're running a little beauty pageant here called Miss Fat Bike- Mm-hmm...
24:34
2014. What's the, uh, what's your choice? What's your vote? Uh, the two 2014 bikes that I rode were the Borealis Echo and the Surly Ice Cream Truck. And obviously I'm a Surly guy. I like the Ice Cream Truck. Nice.
24:52
Nice, nice, nice. [laughs] So the Surly Ice Cream Truck. That is my entry. You and Colin. Colin Forde also had a vote for the Surly Ice Cream Truck. We're it? There had to be more. Hmm, maybe Andy. No. Maybe Andy.
25:06
It's been, it's been a grueling hour of call after call. It's... No, just kidding. [laughs] We've actually been kinda sitting here- Yeah, okay... scratching our butts a little bit. But thanks for calling. Oh, yeah.
25:18
Uh, we actually have another call now. That's funny. So man, thanks for, uh- Yeah... thanks for shopping at fatbike.com. What's, what's the fat bike radio station that you listen to?
25:28
Uh, the, um, uh- Uh, that would be fat-bike.com radio. Ah. All right, dude. See you. It's still me, still me. [laughs] Hey, welcome to the show. Who do we have on the line? Uh, Willie's.
25:41
Hey, um, I wanna get an order to go. Can I get, uh, a Mustang burger, um, two fat fries, one with gravy, and three orange whips. Uh, we'll be there in about 20 minutes. Thanks, man. Bye. No problem.
25:58
[laughs] So dude, uh, really, fries with gravy? [laughs] Oh, my God. [laughs] Hatui. [laughs] How are you? I'm doing good, man.
26:16
You d- you punked me, didn't you? Good. What's new? Um, we got this new call-in thing where people call and talk to us, and then we put it on the- Great... interwebs. And we're running a little beauty pageant- Okay...
26:28
that we're calling- [laughs] That's funny... Miss Fat Bike 2014. Now, instead of coming from states- Ooh... they come from corporations, 'cause that's [laughs] really who runs everything anyway, right? So tell me- Right.
26:43
Right... your choice for Miss Fat Bike 2014. It has to come from a corporation? Well, a, a bike company. I don't know if they're all incorporated. You know what I'm talking about. Okay. Like a bike- But nobody... Yeah.
26:59
Oh, a bike. I was gonna think a girl's name too. [laughs] Um- No, no, no. It's like the best, best fat bike of 2014. Oh, oh, yeah. Okay. Um, um, I, I don't know. I think I'm kinda leaning toward, um...
27:16
I'm kinda going the Tyee way. I'm gonna go with either... 'Cause I kinda, I kinda like, I think the new, uh, Twin Six one is really pretty. Yeah. So I'm kinda leaning toward that. Yeah. And I, and I think that's a 2014.
27:27
Hell yeah. Yep. But, uh, but, but then I'd say that if you go the other way, and I see Retrotec is making one too, which is a, a really pretty bike. Mm-hmm. And I'm seriously thinking about getting it.
27:38
Are you talking about that orange one that you saw a picture of? Yeah. 'Cause you know what? That bike- Yeah... that bike is like- Do you have that one? No, no, no.
27:46
It's actually the guy from Whiskey Parts who works at QBP, that's his bike, and it is from- Oh... like 2007. It's a, it's a pretty old bike, pretty gorgeous too. But it's got that, it's got that...
28:02
You know, I was always gonna have Curtis build me one of those, 'cause I just thought that frame design was so classic. Oh, man. And then put it on a fat frame was just like perfect. You know what I'm saying?
28:12
Have to agree. Have to agree there. You know what I thought you were gonna vote for? I thought you were gonna vote for the single speed sparkly purple Surly.
28:21
I kinda have, I wanna give that bike- Yeah, I think the single-... an honorable mention... oh, yeah. Oh, no. There's no doubt about that. But I, that's, you know...
28:29
I, I, I'm kinda partial to, because maybe just because Spinner and I do it, I'm really partial, if we're gonna go with single speed, then it has to be the white Pugsley. Oh.
28:39
I was on a ride the other day and I saw one of my old, old cycling friends, and he was still rocking the white Pugsley. I was like, "White Pugsley riders for life."
28:49
I still remember the first fat bike race we had- Oh, yeah. You know-... man. We had 25 bikes, and I bet you 20 of them were white complete Pugsleys. And then we made them take their wheels off- Nice...
29:02
and we hid bikes on people. I bet you some people never even got their real bike back. [laughs] So like DJ riding around single speed in Germany for how far? For the whole race just about.
29:15
There was two purple, um, of the Kirie Fishers, and he rode, and somebody accidentally took his, so they each rode each other's bike throughout the whole race. [laughs] So, uh, Single Speed USA or Single Speed...
29:30
No, Single Speed USA is gonna be in Wisconsin this year, right? Yes. All right. Yes. That's gonna be fun. Uh, I would bet, I, I would bet this one will be... I'm gonna make a, I wanna make, make a prediction.
29:43
I'm gonna say 45% of the bikes there will be fat bikes. Wow. So let's say, so let's say we get, you know, every, that race runs about 150 riders, so what are we looking at? 50, 65, 70 fat bikes all in single speeds.
30:01
It'll be awesome. That is gonna be awesome. That's what I think of it, so. Hey, let's do something crazy with some, uh, with some coaster brake cruiser bikes. All right? Let's you and I work on that
30:12
I would love to, I would love to have a fat bike coaster brake bike. I've thought about that. The only problem is, is that coaster brakes don't last very well in the winter. Yeah.
30:22
Personal experience, the new coaster brakes just don't hold up.
30:25
You know, it's not that they freeze up, it's just that they just, the, the bodies aren't built to be that, take that kind of abuse, they just don't seem to last, which is kind of sad because that would be a fun bike.
30:35
That and Strider bikes- Strider bike... Strider bikes for when, for when we're in the old folks homes. I think that, that, that's gonna be the hot setup. Well, isn't there, isn't there a fat Strider bike now?
30:47
Um- Isn't there a fat Strider bike now? I don't know. It's maybe not made Strider, but somebody has a fat pedal-less bike. Really? All right. Yeah, and I don't remember who it was.
30:59
I saw it, I saw it like a couple weeks ago, somebody posted it on- online and I don't remember who it was. Hmm, I haven't seen that one. Well, I- And I, and I scour the internet... you're the one with the noisy gang.
31:08
[laughs] All right, man. Well, you know what? When do you have time? [laughs] We're at the end of our show. You are our last guest, my brother, and the best guest. I don't know, what are we- Cool...
31:21
you know what I'm gonna do? I did that little ice cube practice, that worked out perfect. You know what we're gonna do? For that. We are gonna put your name in the hat. You are now in the drawing for a free,
31:31
full State Bicycle Company, doesn't have a f- it doesn't have a coaster brake on it, but, hey, if, if you want a coaster brake, we'll make sure you get a coaster brake. Seriously.
31:40
I just don't want the one that Dirty Girl chewed collagen on. [laughs] That was the one we were gonna give you. It's cursed by- [laughs] I know it. [laughs] So- It would have his blood on it, that'd be scarier yet.
31:53
You see, also, you know that Spinner and I are racing against him in 24 Hours of Old Pueblo? Oh, man, that makes me wanna go to the 24 Hours of Old Pueblo. Spinner and I are... It's, it's Spinner and I,
32:04
and Pat, um, Skinny Jesus- Oh, yeah... and Charlie Bike Parker. Yeah. Oh, dude. We're a team.
32:10
So we're, we're, us four are going against, Dirty's getting a cruise group of punker guys together and they, we're gonna race, they're gonna race punks and we're gonna...
32:17
Well, Spinner and I, we'll be on fat single speeds. We're all racing single speeds anyway. Well, we, uh, we gotta go there and we have to make a movie that, uh, I don't know. Who will play you in the movie?
32:29
Uh, Jonathan Winters? [laughs] No, he's dead. Um... [laughs] Gomez as Chewy. [laughs] The Elvis years, the later Elvis years of Chewy. [laughs] All right, man.
32:46
Well, let's leave it there. Dude, let's, uh, let- All right... let's do this more often. We'll see you later. I'll talk to you later, man. Bye. You're listening to The Cyclists' Radio.
32:58
So, Gomez, what is your choice for best fat bike of 2014? Well, I broke my choices- [laughs]... into three categories. [laughs] Like a, like a little- You're gonna get the last word whether you want it or not.
33:12
[laughs] I want, I want three bites of this apple. I will take my... I wrote this, so [laughs]... Now, the coup de grace. Sorry.
33:21
So, my, uh, my first award goes for the best rigid fat bike and it goes to the Fatback Corvus. Our friends Jeff Oatley and Kevin Breitenbach rode Corvi to world record victories in the ITI early in 2014.
33:38
Uh, Jeff Oatley beat the previous record for the thousand mile distance by seven days. That's, uh, that's a week. That's a- Last I-... fast bike right there... uh, checked.
33:49
So it was very condition specific as well, but, you know, this is a carbon bike made to haul ass and gear. So- Well, I think-... the ITI speaks for itself... it's for, like, hauling ass and stuff. [laughs] And stuff.
34:04
[laughs] And stuff. It's all in, in how you, uh, emphasize, emphasize. My second category is best suspension ba- bike for 2014, and, uh, I am choosing the Borealis Echo.
34:17
Uh, the real name of the category might be what's the best 12-month a year fat bike? Uh, despite- Stranded on a desert island. [laughs] You only get one bike.
34:26
You get one bike and you wanna, and it's a island in a temperate zone where you would get snow. I think that this is a bike, especially they, they went to the effort to make Bluto, uh, a full year fork. Yep.
34:39
Um- Yeah, something that even SRAM wasn't doing is making that fork work year round. Right. Good plan. Yeah, and, uh, they just came out with today, they just showed their 150 millimeter spaced carbon rigid front fork.
34:53
Very nice. So those are coming out from Borealis. But I digress.
34:57
Uh, the last category is the fat bike rookie of the year, or this could also be maybe the best new fat bike category for 2014, and I think that that is kids' fat bikes. Yeah, for sure.
35:12
You know, the Framed Mongoose, the German company School, and Specialized all came out with fatties for junior this year. Uh, the youth bicycle market is a huge chunk of business. Um- These are cool bikes...
35:26
and, uh, I, I really think that the kids' fat bikes are poised to dominate that market. The, the, the kids' fat bike could become an iconic symbol like, like the Stingray or the PK Ripper for- Ah...
35:39
this generation's fancy rides I had me a damn Orange Krate, I'll tell you what. [laughs] See, there you go. Yeah. I wish I still had that Orange Krate. Yeah, indeed.
35:46
[laughs] So, kids, if you get a fat bike, hang on to it. You're gonna wanna relive your youth at some point, and you're gonna want that bike. Yeah, or pass it down to, uh, to your kids when they get hatched.
35:57
[bottles clinking] I think we are actually at the- The beer stop again... [laughs] next beer stop. Dun, dun, dun, dun. We must, must revisit this. These are big cans. Mm-hmm. I am refreshing my cup, though.
36:11
[clears throat]Oh, we have to- If we drink with every guest on the, uh, on the show every week, we're gonna be in trouble. [laughs] Guests and beer here on Fat Bike Radio.
36:28
So, our very own JK Livin' actually just scored his first fat bike. It's on the way from the guys at State who are gonna send him one of the Megolift- Megolift... Megolift bikes to, uh, to check out.
36:42
Yeah, I'm pretty stoked about this because they're, they're, they're coming in at an affordable- Yeah, it's a four- For, somebody for me... it's a $499- Well, yeah... bike. Right.
36:53
With, runs single speed, but for- Mm-hmm... I don't know. If you go to- I think-... a swap meet, for $50 you could have a- Yeah, probably.
37:00
Just at the Milwaukee Bike Swap I bet you coulda got a nine or a 10-speed- Yeah... set up for, you know- Eight speed, seven speed... something... you know? You know- Right... everything works. So, um- True that.
37:11
Yeah, it's gonna be, it's gonna be a good month, man. It's a good-looking bike. [laughs] Our buddy Dirty did a bunch of, uh, bunch of test riding for them, dune riding. He's, he's on the website. I see him.
37:21
He's a rock star now. [laughs] Rockstar Dirty. So that's, that's coming. And it does have a... Notice it has a bottle opener on the, uh- Oh... on the, uh, s- uh- Give one... seat tube, so.
37:31
That's what you need on a bike, a damn bottle opener. Yeah. Even though I'm such a proponent of cans, I might have to- [laughs]...
37:37
switch it up- You never know when- I gotta switch it up to some bottles just to- When somebody like me will come along and be like, "Uh, got an opener?" Yep, yep. Dun, dun, dun, dun. Is that the contest I am fair?
37:50
Yeah, we'll be awarding one of our listeners that call into the show an opportunity to win a Megolift for Valentine's Day. That's pretty nice of those guys. Uh-huh.
38:00
So, we're actually gonna run a cheesy, like, 10th caller gets a, gets an entry or something. What do you, what do you think? I, I think we probably gotta shoot for maybe the third caller.
38:11
[laughs] 'Cause we won't get that many callers, I predict. But yes, we- If your name is Broom Hilda and you call in this week- [laughs]... we will enter you into the contest.
38:21
I think the people that call in, we pick a number, a really low number, [laughs] and we say that that guy is qualified, and then we have to find some really easy way for people to get entered.
38:36
Besides listening to our dulcet tones on the radio? [laughs] Something, I don't know. We'll figure it out in the next week. Yeah, we got our man- We got our best man on it.
38:44
[laughs] Sven and Greg are on the contest committee. [laughs] Contest committee. So, yeah. Yeah. Well, Plus Gomez is running some sort of crazy snow dance multimedia contest too. Yeah.
38:58
The, uh, snow dance con- snow dance contest is going on until January 20th.
39:03
You win a sweet pair of Rims and a pair of Luce, plus a bunch of other fat bike accessories for the well-outfitted and modern fat mountain cyclist. That is a impressive list of prizes. What do people have to do to win?
39:18
Well, all they have to do is send us any kind of media that can be attached to an email. All you have to do is make that media something to do with the snow dance.
39:28
Uh, you can click the link on the, uh, show notes for all the sort of details, but I mean, use your imagination. You could do almost anything. I mean, like, you could do a poem. You could, uh... What else?
39:39
How art thou fat bike? [laughs] Please come to me. What rhymes with snow dance? Come to my tent. You can make a filthy limerick. I love a good filthy limerick. You could...
39:51
It, it says right in the contest, you could mold- Yeah... 500 pounds of butter into the shape of a giant snowflake. Oh, yeah. Dance and pants. But- I think that's... [laughs] There you go.
40:01
There's some rhyming for you folks.
40:02
But you can't email me 500 pounds of butter, so you gotta take a picture or a video or, I don't know, take that sculpture, paint a picture of it, take a picture of it, put that on a Xerox machine, email that to me.
40:16
Scan it and e- you know. How about e- an Excel spreadsheet all about snow dancing? [laughs] Sounds, sounds like a good one. Well, you know, got a bunch of links coming in again. I know.
40:28
It's, it's, it's a link-rich environment. Link rich. What did you like this week? Well, I saw more than one fat bike hater thing. It's kinda like I, it's not that I like that.
40:42
I, I think the one, I think this one here is trying to be funny. This is from people that can't afford fat bikes, isn't it? [laughs] But the other one was Angry Singlespeeder.
40:49
He said he was scratching his head of why people would ride a fat bike 100 miles on the road and whatnot. Angry Singlespeeder. Sp- Spinner did that for the Almanzo 100 in 35-degree weather with a short-sleeve shirt on.
41:05
[laughs] Right. That's 'cause that's badass, that's why. [laughs] Our test pilot, Andy, the reason why I knew about that link is because Andy posted on there, "Well, I did 200 miles on a singlespeed fat."
41:18
[laughs] "It was the best day of my life." [laughs] So yeah, uh, well, we got a lot, a bunch of other links. Check out the show notes. There's, you know, another interview with Travis Brown from the guy at Meriwether.
41:31
Right, and Meriwether's getting ready to, uh, they're getting ready to put out a bike, so. Is it called the Chainstay Drop?
41:38
[laughs] I, I don't know what he's gonna call it, but he did have a, uh, Nishiki Alien fat bike back about three years ago, but the guy's been honing his skills. He didn't jump right in, and, uh, I have high hopes.
41:49
High ho- well, if Travis Brown gives you input, I bet you can, uh, take that to the bank. Yeah. Yeah, right. Our- Sewer tour guide. That's crazy stuff.
41:57
Yeah, Death Rider, uh, up there in Minneapolis going, uh, underground Minneapolis, and, uh, just reminds me how much I like it when our s- our storm drain sewer's available here.
42:08
Right now, they're building a big interchange over it- [laughs]... and I don't wanna get stuck in there when the whole thing collapses, but it's a, a mile and a half underground. Which is pretty sweet Huh?
42:17
You gotta go to the end and turn around and come back, but you're- [laughs]... you're under there for a solid hour after you have a beer at the end and stuff. That's cool. Yep, worth doing, for sure.
42:25
[laughs] Bicycling Magazine came out with their little- Céline Yeager gets on a fat bike and she discovers they're not just for snow anymore. See? [laughs] That's what we were saying before. I know.
42:37
Mainstream media, they're finally getting it. I don't know. They're getting it. That's Bicycling Magazine, though. It is have something to do with bicycling. Coast Kids got more, uh, posts. That guy's, uh,
42:48
if nothing else, like he posts all the time. Yeah, man. He's got another, uh, pug in his quiver of bikes. I love anything with a potluck. Potluck.
42:58
That's Jobu, whose kids are, uh, on our picture for this week, for the post. Right on. Uh, Turner Bikes has the King Khan on their site now. That's, uh- Khan! Khan. [laughs] Oh, no, Botany Bay. [laughs] Wait, Botany Bay.
43:14
Oh, no. We have to get out of here, damn. [laughs] Dave Turner putting out a good product there. His regular old Turners were almost fat bikes.
43:26
True that, and, uh, this guy that did the DW link on the Turner, Dave Weagle- Mm-hmm... he just became our buddy on one of the social media- Oh... platforms. I believe it was Twitter.
43:36
I need, I need to talk to him and learn from him. I want a Weagle link for my big toe. [laughs] And then this last link that has the O Canada on there, it's, uh- O Canada. O Canada.
43:48
That'll be the g- thanks for giving me a chance to cough there, guys. Well, our drink and bring it, baby. I [laughs] I don't know the words. That's as many words as I know.
43:58
In this article it says, "Oh, fat bikes are super popular, but good luck trying to find one." S- So if you got a truckload of fat bikes, you might wanna head up to Quebec there.
44:07
[laughs] It happened the last several years, where people ran out of fat bikes. I'm not surprised it happened in sporadic areas, for sure. Yeah, I would think so. Yeah. They are quite popular.
44:18
